RESUMO

The influence of source and level of inclusion of raw glycerin (GLYC) in the diet on growth performance, digestive traits, total tract apparent retention (TTAR), and apparent ileal digestibility of nutrients was studied in broilers from 1 to 21 d of age. There was a control diet based on corn and soybean meal and 8 additional diets that formed a 2 × 4 factorial with 2 sources of GLYC and 4 levels of inclusion (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10%). The GLYC used were obtained from the same original batch of soy oil that was dried under different processing conditions and contained 87.5 or 81.6% glycerol, respectively. Type of processing of the GLYC did not affect any of the variables studied except DM and organic matter retention (P < 0.05) that was higher for the 87.5% glycerol diet. From d 1 to 21, feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved linearly (L, P ≤ 0.01) as the GLYC content of the diet increased, but ADG was not affected. On d 21, the relative weight (% BW) of the liver and the digestive tract increased (L, P < 0.01) as the level of GLYC in the diet increased, but lipid concentration in the liver was not affected. The TTAR of DM and organic matter increased quadratically (Q, P < 0.05) and the AME(n) content of the diet increased linearly (L, P < 0.01) with increases in dietary GLYC. Also, the apparent ileal digestibility of DM (L, P < 0.05; Q, P = 0.07) and gross energy (L, P < 0.01) increased as the GLYC content of the diet increased. It is concluded that raw GLYC from the biodiesel industry can be used efficiently, up to 10% of the diet, as a source of energy for broilers from 1 to 21 d of age and that the energy content of well-processed raw GLYC depends primarily on its glycerol content.

RESUMO

The existence of normal lower reproductive tract flora has been recognized for many years. A study was conducted to identify the possible existence of upper reproductive tract (endometrial) bacteria in asymptomatic women with no history of previous pelvic infection and a normal pelvic examination. Bacteria were recovered from the endometria of 55 women with a double-lumen-catheter-protected brush; six cultures were sterile. Two hundred thirty-one bacterial species were present in 54 endocervical cultures. Type of contraception and phase of the menstrual cycle had no significant effect on the bacterial species recovered. Although contamination by cervical bacteria was possible, there was evidence of separate endometrial flora.

RESUMO

D-amino acid oxidase from Rhodotorula gracilis is a FAD-containing enzyme that belongs to the oxidase class that is characterized by the ability of the reduced flavin to react quickly with oxygen, yielding hydrogen peroxide and the oxidized cofactor. Hydrogen peroxide, necessary for the production of glutaryl-7-ACA from cephalosporin C had a deleterious effect on the enzyme. H(2)O(2) induced the oxidation of tryptophan and cysteine residues of the protein that could be involved in the dimerization process, required for the attainment of a fully competent enzyme. H(2)O(2) had also a kinetic effect on the reaction catalyzed by D-amino acid oxidase. It was a pure noncompetitive inhibitor; the corresponding inhibition constants were K(is) = 0.52 mM and K(ii) = 0.70 mM.

RESUMO

The fluoride content of a sample of bags of salt for sale in Mexico City was measured in order to estimate the proportion of marketed salt that contained the quantity of fluoride set by the National Program for Prevention of Dental Caries through Consumption of Fluoridated Table Salt. The effectiveness of that program had never been evaluated. In March 1993, bags of salt were obtained from 70 of the 3544 neighborhoods that make up Mexico City. The stores were selected by simple random sampling. Salt was likewise purchased from 20% of the 146 supermarkets and self-service stores in the city, also selected as a random sample. Then, blind measurement was done of the fluoride content of 221 bags of salt. The true content of this element was often found to be below the amount called for by the government. In addition, it did not coincide with the quantity indicated on the package label, which is a violation of the law.
