BACKGROUND: Brazilian Oral Pathology (OP) and Oral Medicine (OM) have gained significant international recognition. However, no study has yet evaluated the impact of citations in scientific publications. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the impact of citations from Brazilian researchers in OP and OM over the last two decades. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 50 researchers linked to postgraduate programs in OP/OM. Data collected from each professional's Lattes curriculum included gender, academic affiliation, the corporate category of the institution, and location. The number of papers published and citations received between 2004 to 2013 and 2014 to 2023 was also collected from the Web of Science database. RESULTS: Most researchers were male (56%) and from public institutions (90%), mainly in the Southeast region (60%). Over two decades, they collectively published 8,033 scientific articles, with significant growth (p<0.001) from to 2004-2013 to 2014-2023. While the average citations per researcher did not differ significantly between 2004-2013 and 2014-2023 (p=0.538), there was a notable 67.67% increase in citations in the last decade. CONCLUSIONS: Brazilian researchers in the areas of OP and OM have demonstrated a significant academic impact over the past two decades, with a marked increase in publications and citations over the last ten years. This highlights the contribution of Brazilians to the global scientific community in these areas.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy involves dynamic changes in the maternal immune system, thus potentially affecting women's response to infection. The aim of this study was to investigate whether gestational age at the time of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is associated with mortality and morbidity related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in hospitalized pregnant women. METHODS: This was a cohort study of pregnant women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection at any gestational age (categorized into trimesters) who were hospitalized in Brazil from February 2020 to November 2021. Sociodemographic and epidemiological characteristics, signs and symptoms, comorbidities, interventions, vaccination status and type of healthcare establishment were obtained from a nationwide database. Multivariate logistic and Cox regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for in-hospital COVID-19-related mortality and morbidity (defined as time from hospital admission to recovery). RESULTS: A total of 7461 SARS-CoV-2-infected pregnant women were included in the study (9.3%, 28.4% and 62.3% in the first, second and third trimesters, respectively). After adjustment for sociodemographic, epidemiological and clinical characteristics, and intervention-related variables, gestational age at infection was found not to be associated with COVID-19-related mortality and morbidity. Women admitted to establishments with an obstetric center, compared to hospitals without, were 38% less likely to die from SARS-CoV-2 infection (adjusted odds ratio, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.48-0.80), while patients who received private not-for-profit healthcare had a 13% shorter time to recovery (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.20) compared to those who received public healthcare. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a higher percentage of women being admitted in the third trimester, we found no association between gestational age and COVID-19 mortality and morbidity. The previously reported increase in morbidity and mortality in the third trimester in pregnant women with COVID-19 may be attributable to other gestational-age-affected variables for which adjustment was made in our study. © 2022 The Authors. Atmospheric carbon dioxide records indicate that the land surface has acted as a strong global carbon sink over recent decades, with a substantial fraction of this sink probably located in the tropics, particularly in the Amazon. Nevertheless, it is unclear how the terrestrial carbon sink will evolve as climate and atmospheric composition continue to change. Here we analyse the historical evolution of the biomass dynamics of the Amazon rainforest over three decades using a distributed network of 321 plots. While this analysis confirms that Amazon forests have acted as a long-term net biomass sink, we find a long-term decreasing trend of carbon accumulation. Rates of net increase in above-ground biomass declined by one-third during the past decade compared to the 1990s. This is a consequence of growth rate increases levelling off recently, while biomass mortality persistently increased throughout, leading to a shortening of carbon residence times. Potential drivers for the mortality increase include greater climate variability, and feedbacks of faster growth on mortality, resulting in shortened tree longevity. The observed decline of the Amazon sink diverges markedly from the recent increase in terrestrial carbon uptake at the global scale, and is contrary to expectations based on models.

Tooth wear is one of the dental abnormalities commonly found in different populations. The objective of this work is to conduct a parametric analysis to evaluate the texture influence on the human dental surface hardness, considered here as the ratio between contact force and contact area, obtained through homogenization procedure. A code was implemented using the statistical package R for parametric analysis. The computational approach consists of three routines: numerical generation of surfaces, based on Pearson system; the second, a script coupled to the Finite Element program Abaqus, for the modelling of the micro-contacts; the third for homogenization and statistical analysis of results. The average curvature of the roughness exerts the greatest influence on the surface hardness. The parameters that most influence the development of contact forces are kurtosis followed by skewness.

Optimal paths play a fundamental role in numerous physical applications ranging from random polymers to brittle fracture, from the flow through porous media to information propagation. Here for the first time we explore the path that is activated once this optimal path fails and what happens when this new path also fails and so on, until the system is completely disconnected. In fact many applications can also be found for this novel fracture problem. In the limit of strong disorder, our results show that all the cracks are located on a single self-similar connected line of fractal dimension D(b) approximately = 1.22. For weak disorder, the number of cracks spreads all over the entire network before global connectivity is lost. Strikingly, the disconnecting path (backbone) is, however, completely independent on the disorder.

Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is characterized by metabolic acidosis due to renal impaired acid excretion. Hyperchloremic acidosis with normal anion gap and normal or minimally affected glomerular filtration rate defines this disorder. RTA can also present with hypokalemia, medullary nephrocalcinosis and nephrolitiasis, as well as growth retardation and rickets in children, or short stature and osteomalacia in adults. In the past decade, remarkable progress has been made in our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of RTA and the fundamental molecular physiology of renal tubular transport processes. This review summarizes hereditary diseases caused by mutations in genes encoding transporter or channel proteins operating along the renal tubule. Review of the molecular basis of hereditary tubulopathies reveals various loss-of-function or gain-of-function mutations in genes encoding cotransporter, exchanger, or channel proteins, which are located in the luminal, basolateral, or endosomal membranes of the tubular cell or in paracellular tight junctions. These gene mutations result in a variety of functional defects in transporter/channel proteins, including decreased activity, impaired gating, defective trafficking, impaired endocytosis and degradation, or defective assembly of channel subunits. Further molecular studies of inherited tubular transport disorders may shed more light on the molecular pathophysiology of these diseases and may significantly improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying renal salt homeostasis, urinary mineral excretion, and blood pressure regulation in health and disease. The identification of the molecular defects in inherited tubulopathies may provide a basis for future design of targeted therapeutic interventions and, possibly, strategies for gene therapy of these complex disorders.

BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUVs) constitute the most common infravesical urinary obstruction in boys and are often accompanied by severe consequences to the lower and upper urinary tract. Currently, about two-thirds of diagnosis of PUVs has been suspected by prenatal ultrasonography findings. The aim of this study was to compare long-term clinical outcomes in two groups of patients with PUVs, with antenatal vs. postnatal diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of 173 patients with PUVs systematically followed up in a tertiary center. Median follow-up time was 66.5 months (interquartile range [IQ], 11.4-147.9 months) for those patients who survived neonatal period. Seventy-nine (45.6%) patients were followed up for more than 5 years and 55 (32%) for more than 10 years. For analysis, the cohort was stratified into two groups according to the clinical presentation (prenatal vs. postnatal). The events of interest were urinary tract infection (UTI), surgical interventions, proteinuria, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and death. Survival analyses were performed to evaluate time until occurrence of the events. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients (35.8%) were diagnosed by fetal sonography. Patients of postnatal group presented a higher incidence rate of UTI episodes (6.5, 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.9-8.3) than antenatal group (1.2, 95% CI, 0.4-2.7) (P < 0.001). Thirty-six patients (21%) presented hypertension, and 77 (44.5%) had persistent mild proteinuria. There was no significant difference in the estimated incidence of hypertension (P = 0.28) and proteinuria (P = 0.78) between antenatal and postnatal groups. The cumulative incidence of CKD stage ≥3 was estimated to be about 37% at 10 years of age, and 56% at 18 years of age. By survival analysis, there was no significant difference in the estimated incidence of CKD stage ≥3 (log-rank = 0.32, P = 0.57) and CKD stage 5 (log-rank = 1.08, P = 0.28, Figure) between antenatal and postnatal groups. Of 173 patients included in the analysis, 13 (7.5%) died during follow-up with a median age of 2.6 months (IQ, 15 days-62 months). Survival analyses have not shown any significant difference in the estimated incidence of death between antenatal and postnatal groups (log-rank = 1.38, P = 0.24). CONCLUSION: The study findings did not corroborate the initial hypothesis that the rates of renal function declining in patients with PUVs would be attenuated by an early diagnosis and intervention after antenatal diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is a broad term describing the full spectrum of disorders in any of the stages of bladder function-storage or voiding LUTD is a clinical condition associated with emotional and behavioral disorders in children. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association of emotional and behavioral symptoms and their impact on the quality of life (QoL) in children and adolescents with LUTD. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients and their parents enrolled in an interdisciplinary program for children and adolescents with LUTD were included in the analysis. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was used to estimate the prevalence of behavioral and emotional problems through the assessment of 14 items. Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (versions for parents and children) was applied in the versions for parents and children to evaluate the QoL. The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory-PedsQL, version 4.0-was applied separately for parents and patients. The association of clinical variables and aspects related to QoL of patients were evaluated through non-parametric correlations (Spearman) and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: According to CBCL's clinical scores, 56% of the patients showed total behavioral problems, 55% internalizing, and 38% externalizing. When comparing the conditions of LUTD and the CBCL scores, patients with voiding postponement had the lowest rates of total problems (P = 0.036). Children and adolescents with LUTD who also had enuresis showed a higher frequency of externalizing problems (P = 0.001), especially aggressive behavior (P = 0.013). Scores of patients with LUTD were significantly lower in all domains of QoL than normative data. Presence of behavioral problems was associated with worse QoL in all evaluated aspects. The total QoL was most influenced by the CBCL school competence scale according to the regression model analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest the relevance of evaluation of behavioral and social repercussions of LUTD to improve the multidisciplinary approach for this condition in pediatric population.

In this paper we investigate the influences of the second neighbor interactions on a skyrmion lattice in two-dimensional chiral magnets. Such a system contains the exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya for the spin interactions and therefore, we analyse three situations: firstly, the second neighbor interaction is present only in the exchange coupling; secondly, it is present only in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. Finally, the second neighbor interactions are present in both exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings. We show that such effects cause important modifications to the helical and skyrmion phases when an external magnetic field is applied.

A phenomenological model is proposed to analyze the influence of the incident light intensity on the photoinduced anisotropy of an azobenzene-containing polymer film. The optical anisotropy was generated in the films by the incidence of linearly polarized light and monitored by transmittance measurements.

The orientational order of liquid crystals (LCs) induced by periodic patterned substrates has been investigated with cells coated by azopolymer films that could be photoaligned in a controlled way. Two regimes were observed depending on the period of the patterns: (i) above 3.0 microm the LC follows the direction imposed by the patterned substrate since the energy stored in the surface potential minimizes the elastic energy of the LC medium. (ii) For periods smaller than 1.0 microm a homogeneous in-plane state was induced and the LC did not follow the orientation imposed by the surface. This in-plane transition could be explained qualitatively by a theoretical model based on the competition between the Frank-Oseen elastic energy and the phenomenological surface potential. The results also suggest an out-of-plane transition for the LC director as the period was reduced. These results agree with data in the literature for patterned substrates with completely distinct architectures. This indicates that for a particular LC sample the overall behavior depends basically on the texture period instead of the texture architecture. The textures were characterized with a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), which allowed simultaneous morphological and optical images in the submicrometer range.

The in-plane orientation of a nematic liquid-crystal sample, confined by two periodic microtextured substrates, is theoretically analyzed by means of the Frank-Oseen continuum elastic theory and a suitable surface term. In addition, an easy optical method to produce such textures using photopolymeric films is presented. It is shown that, in the limit of large pattern period, the orientation depends only on the ratio of the splay and bend elastic constants K1/K3 and on the easy axis direction of the individual stripes. In the particular case for which K1 = K3, the stability depends only on the easy axis direction for a general pattern period.

RESUMO

A new sorbent (raw rice bran) was investigated for heavy metal ions removal from aqueous solutions. Rice bran characterisation was carried out in order to identify the functional groups possibly involved in the metal binding. The binding process was studied in terms of binding capacity and metal affinity. The adsorption equilibrium was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. The negative Gibbs free energy values obtained in this study with rice bran confirm the feasibility of the process and the spontaneous nature of sorption.

INTRODUCTION: Aiming to develop a novel (99m)Tc-labeled imaging agent, for angiogenesis and tumor receptors, two peptides obtained from phage display library, namely GX1 and the heterodimer RGD-GX1, were synthesized in a cyclic conformation. They were radiolabeled with (99m)Tc, employing the HYNIC chelator, for radiochemical evaluation and biological properties. METHODS: Radiolabeling, radiochemical control, plasma protein binding, and partition coefficient were assessed for both radioconjugates. Biodistribution in healthy Balb/c mice was carried out, in order to evaluate the biological behaviour of the radiocomplexes. RESULTS: The conjugates displayed a rather similar pharmacokinetic profile. They were prepared with high radiochemical purity (>96%), and both were hydrophilic (log P of -2.25 and -2.51 respectively). Preferential renal excretion was observed. Kidney uptake (42.31±5.35 %ID/g) for (99m)Tc-HYNIC-E-[c(RGDfk)-c(GX1)], 1h post-injection was about three times higher than the uptake of (99m)Tc-HYNIC-PEG4-c(GX1) (11.92±4.77%ID/g). Total blood, bone and muscle values revealed a slightly slower clearance for the RGD-GX1 radiocomplex. CONCLUSION: The high radiochemical purity achieved, and the similar in vivo profile observed for both radioconjugates, make them potential candidates for radiopharmaceuticals for tumor imaging. Further investigations of binding affinity, and uptake of GX1 and RGD-GX1 peptides in tumor models, are warranted.

We investigate the dynamical behavior of the director in the surface layer of lyotropic nematic liquid crystals in an external magnetic field. The characteristic time of the orientation process is obtained from optical measurements for samples of different thickness (200, 50, and 10 microm). The boundary surfaces are glass plates coated with rubbed polymer [polymethylmethcrylate (PMMA)], to introduce an easy axis. Drastic changes in the dynamical behavior are observed when the thickness is decreased and the experimental results indicate a uniaxial to biaxial transition due to the confinement of the nematic sample.

RESUMO

We have observed a phase transition from a uniaxial to a biaxial nematic phase in a lyotropic liquid crystal as a function of decreasing film thickness. The results, obtained by optical second-harmonic generation experiments in a wedged cell geometry, are supported by additional Z -scan measurements and can be interpreted by wall-induced ordering effects.

The generation of surface anisotropy by photochemical means has been proposed as an attractive method to align liquid crystals. In this paper, we present an experimental study of the alignment induced on a liquid crystal by a polymer film containing azo-dye groups in the side chain. Optical measurements were performed in nematic liquid crystal cells to determine the azimuthal and zenithal anchoring strengths as a function of the irradiation energy and chromophores concentration. It was observed that the director tends to align perpendicular to the polarization direction of the incident light and the orientation process consists essentially of a rotation of the director in the plane parallel to the boundary surfaces. However, the concentration of azo-dye groups in the polymer film must exceed a minimum value to get a macroscopical effect on the liquid crystal alignment. It is shown that the azimuthal anchoring strength can be varied two orders of magnitude by controlling the irradiation energy and azo-dye concentration.

Xanthine oxidase was covalently immobilized on polyacrylamide gel beads, polyamide-11 and dacron. Hypoxanthine (15 ml of 200 microM), prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 8.0, was circulated through a column containing 1.0 g derivatized enzyme at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min at 28 degrees C. Specific activities of 0.660, 0.072 and 0.016 Units/mg of protein were demonstrable for the polyacrylamide gel beads, dacron and polyamide-11 derivatives, respectively. The action of these water insoluble enzyme derivatives on 6-mercaptopurine (15 ml of 660 microM) was also investigated, under the same experimental conditions, showing specific activities of 0.063 Units/mg, 0.574 muUnits/mg and 0.118 muUnits/mg, respectively. The 6-mercaptopurine oxidative pathway catalyzed by immobilized xanthine oxidase on dacron stopped at the intermediate compound, 6-mercapto-8-hydroxypurine, so that no 6-thiouric acid was produced, whereas the immobilized preparations using polyacrylamide gel beads and polyamide-11 behaved like the soluble enzyme, namely, 6-thiouric acid was the final product. The behavior of dacron-xanthine oxidase compound was similar to that previously described for the derivatives obtained with carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. The hypoxanthine oxidative pathway catalyzed by xanthine oxidase immobilized on these three supports was similar to the soluble enzyme.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

A retrospective review of paracoccidioidomycosis cases seen between January 1966 to January 1997 revealled 27 of the 627 cases occurred in women (male to female ratio 27.3:1). Data for 23 of these 27 cases demonstrated the protective effect of female hormones.
