RESUMO

The use of medicinal plants for the treatment of diseases, including cancer, is acknowledged and accepted in many African nations. Heavy metal contamination of plant materials poses a potential health risk, particularly for populations that are already vulnerable. This study determines the levels of heavy metals in medicinal plant samples used for treatment of skin cancer and evaluate the health risk caused by heavy metals to the adult population in Pretoria, South Africa using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The concentrations of metals were as follows; As (<0.2 - 1.04±0.026), Cd (0.02 ±0.00026 - 0.167±0.006), Pb (0.38 ±0.01 - 2.27±0.05), Cr (5.31±0.21- 26.9 ±3.96) mg/kg, and Hg which were lesser than 0.02 mg/kg. The mean concentrations of all analyzed heavy metals are above permissible limit except for Hg which are lower than the permissible limit. The Hazard Quotient (THQ) was less than 1 for all the heavy metals, suggesting that there are no obvious non-carcinogenic health risks associated with the consumption of these medicinal plants for now even though the prolonged use may result in health risks. The ingestion route was identified as the primary contributor to the overall risk by the health index (HI) values in the present study, which were more than 1, indicating that the combined effects of the heavy metal contaminants present in a particular herbal preparation pose health risk in the long term. Our findings support the need for close monitoring of potential heavy metal concentrations in medicinal plants given to patients from herbal shops.

For centuries, rice has been a dietary staple food partially due to its accessibility, affordability, and nutritional content. However, it has been documented that plants can bioaccumulate trace elements from soil and store them in their tissues therefore necessitating monitoring of its nutritional quality. The current study investigated the Selenium and heavy metal contents of various brands of rice obtained from different retail stores in Pretoria, South Africa. The analysis was carried out using different rice samples and different methods/stages of cooking rice including the analysis of rinsed rice water (RW), raw rice (RR), cooked rice (CR), and cooked rice water (CW), for trace elements content using the Inductive Couple Plasma Mass Spectrometry. The results revealed that the Se content ranged from 0.013 ± 0.01 mg/kg - 0.089 ± 0.06 mg/kg in RR, 0.013 ± 0.01 mg/kg - 0.046 ± 0.01 mg/kg in CR, 0.01 ± 0.01mg/kg- 0.028 ± 0.00 mg/kg in RW and 0.01 ± 0.01 mg/kg - 0.048 ± 0.01 mg/kg in CW. The calculated estimated dietary intake (EDI) of Se was recorded as follows; raw rice (7.06 × 10-5 mg/day), cooked rice (5.01 × 10-5 mg/day), water from cooked rice (4.54 × 10-5 mg/day) and rinsed water of raw rice (3.97 × 10-5 mg/day). The concentrations of all other heavy metals measured were within the WHO-recommended limits. The HQ for all the trace metals in all the samples did not exceed one, implying that there is no health risk from trace metals analysed in this study from the consumption of the rice brands used in this study. The results of this study demonstrated that reliance on rice alone for the supply of Se may be inadequate owing to the values obtained in our study. Constant monitoring of the nutritional contents of food products may be required to improve the overall nutritional well-being of the consumers.

Trace metals have been reported in the literature to be associated with obesity. Exposure to some trace metals such as Mn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb may pose a serious health risk to individuals living around a polluted environment. The present study assessed the levels of trace metals in the blood of obese females living around industrial areas in Gauteng, South Africa. The study was carried out using a mixed method approach. Only females with a BMI ≥ 30.0 were considered. A total of 120 obese females participated in the study (site 1: 40-industrial area, site 2: 40-industrial area, and site 3: 40-residential area), aged 18-45 and not in menopause. Blood samples were analysed for trace metals content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The mean concentrations of trace metals were in the order Pb > Mn > Cr > Co > As > Cd (site 1), Pb > Mn > Co > As > Cd (site 2), and Mn > Cr > Co > As > Pb > Cd (site 3). The blood Mn from site 1 ranged from 6.79 µg/L-33.99 µg/L, and the mean differences obtained from the participants from different sites were significant (p < 0.01). The blood levels of Mn, Pb, Cr, Co, As, and Cd were above the recommended limits set by the WHO in some of the participants. The present study noted, among others, closeness to industrial areas, lifestyle decisions such as the use of tobacco products by their partners indoors, and the method used for cooking as factors that might have accounted for the blood levels of Mn, Pb, Cd and Co. The study showed that there is a need for constant monitoring of the levels of trace metals in the blood of those living in these areas.

Bottled water is one of the fastest growing commercial products in both developing and developed countries owing to the believe that it is safe and pure. In South Africa, over the years, there has been an increase in the sale of bottled water due to the perceived notion that water supplied by the government may not be safe for human consumption. This study investigated the concentrations of trace metals and the physicochemical properties of bottled water purchased from various supermarkets (registered and unregistered) in Pretoria with a view to determining the health risk that may be associated with the levels of trace metals resulting from the consumption of the bottled water. Twelve commonly available different brands of bottled water were purchased and analysed for trace-metal content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The water samples were also analysed for various physicochemical parameters. The health risk was assessed using the target hazard quotient (THQ). For all the bottled water, the highest concentration of all the elements was recorded for Fe. The values reported for Cr, Ni and Pb were above the limit recommended by World Health Organization. The pH values ranged from 4.67 to 7.26. Three of the samples had pH values in the acidic region below the permissible standard of 6.8-8.0 set by the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA). The target hazard quotient calculated for the water samples showed a minimum risk for Pb, Cr and Ni. The study showed the need to adhere to a strict compliance standard considering the fact that South Africa has rich natural mineral elements, which may have played a role in the high levels of trace metals reported from some of the water samples.

BACKGROUND: Adequate knowledge on hazards of healthcare waste and proper handling methods can result in its safe disposal and protection of workers and communities. The study assessed perceptions of healthcare workers on the adherence and risks associated with the practices of healthcare waste management. METHODS: A total of 126 questionnaires were administered in selected wards at an academic hospital to establish training and knowledge on legislations regarding healthcare waste and health hazards associated with such waste. RESULTS: Sixty nine percent (69.0%) of participants had received training on healthcare waste handling. The highest number of cleaning staff (85.7%) received training from work while 34.8% of the doctors also received training from work. Only 44.1% of the nurses had knowledge about policies on healthcare waste. The majority of the participants (82.0%) had knowledge on the risks associated with handling of healthcare waste. However, only 20.0% of the participants re-capped needles after use and of these 43.5% were doctors. Most of the nurses (64.0%) had been exposed to needle pricks. CONCLUSION: Even though 82.0% of the participants believed there were enough management practices enforced with regards to the healthcare waste, it was recommended that there should be more education on the handling of healthcare waste.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the level and possible sources of trace elements in Tshwane metropolis using transplanted lichen thallus of Parmelia sulcata with a view to evaluating the ability of this lichen species to monitor air pollutants from a perceived polluted environment. METHODS: Samples of the lichen thalli were transplanted into ten different sites and covered with a net. Samples were exposed for 3 months. Concentrations of ten trace elements were determined with the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed in the values of elemental concentration in lichen from unpolluted area and those transplanted to all the sites (p < 0.01). Variations in values of trace elements recorded in lichen transplant from different sites were also statistically significant (p < 0.01). The high traffic sites showed significantly higher elemental concentrations, particularly for Pb, Zn, and Cu than the industrial and residential areas (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Trends in the trace element values from different sites suggested that the elements might have come from anthropogenic sources.
