RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Open fetal surgery requires a hemostatic hysterotomy that minimizes membrane separation. For over 30 years, the standard of care for hysterotomy in the gravid uterus has been the AutoSuture Premium Poly CS*-57 stapler. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to test the feasibility of hysterotomy in a rhesus monkey model with the Harmonic ACE®+7 Shears. METHODS: A gravid rhesus monkey underwent midgestation hysterotomy at approximately 90 days of gestation (2nd trimester; term = 165 ± 10 days) using the Harmonic ACE®+7 Shears. A two-layer uterine closure was completed and the dam was monitored by ultrasound intermittently throughout the pregnancy. At 58 days after hysterotomy (near term), a final surgery was performed to evaluate the uterus and hysterotomy site. RESULTS: A 3.5-cm hysterotomy was completed in 2 min 7 s. The opening was hemostatic and the membranes were sealed. Immediately after closure and throughout the pregnancy, ultrasound revealed intact membranes without separation and normal amniotic fluid levels. At term, the scar was well healed without signs of thinning or dehiscence. CONCLUSIONS: The Harmonic ACE®+7 Shears produced a hemostatic midgestation hysterotomy with membrane sealing in the rhesus monkey model. Importantly, healing was acceptable.

RESUMO

A geropathology grading platform (GGP) for assessing age-related lesions has been established and validated for in inbred strain of mice. Because nonhuman primates (NHPs) share significant similarities in aging and spontaneous chronic diseases with humans, they provide excellent translational value for correlating histopathology with biological and pathological events associated with increasing age. Descriptive age-associated pathology has been described for rhesus macaques and marmosets, but a grading platform similar to the mouse GGP does not exist. The value of these NHP models is enhanced by considerable historical data from clinical, bio-behavioral, and social domains that align with health span in these animals. Successful adaptation of the mouse GGP for NHPs will include 1) expanding the range of organs examined; 2) standardizing necropsy collection, tissue trimming, and descriptive lesion terminology; 3) expanding beyond rhesus macaques and marmosets to include other commonly used NHPs in research; and 4) creating a national resource for age-related pathology to complement the extensive in-life datasets. Adaptation of the GGP to include translational models other than mice will be crucial to advance geropathology designed to enhance aging research.

RESUMO

In March 2017, 26 American goldfinches (Spinus tristis) were found dead following a drench application of imidacloprid in California (USA). Identical seed fragments were present in the digestive tracts. Imidacloprid was detected in 4 separate pooled samples from 18 birds, in crop/gizzard contents (4.8 ± 1.3 ppm; range 2.2-8.5 ppm) and liver tissues (3.9 ± 0.6 ppm; range 2.1-4.8 ppm). We suspect that fallen elm (Ulmus sp.) seeds were contaminated with imidacloprid during the drench application and subsequently ingested, resulting in acute toxicity and death.
