RESUMO

This study investigates the interface between ice and organic solvents using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Atomically flat ice surfaces were prepared and observed by AFM in 1-octanol, 1-hexanol, and 1-butanol. The results show differences in surface roughness influenced by the interaction of ice and alcohols. Young's modulus of ice was analyzed by force curve measurements, providing valuable insights into the properties of ice in liquid environments. The results showed the characteristics of the ice surface in different solvents, suggesting potential applications in understanding surface and interface phenomena associated with ice under realistic conditions.

PURPOSE: Lung tumor tracking during stereotactic radiotherapy with the CyberKnife can misrecognize tumor location under conditions where similar patterns exist in the search area. This study aimed to develop a technique for bone signal suppression during kV-x-ray imaging. METHODS: Paired CT images were created with or without bony structures using a 4D extended cardiac-torso phantom (XCAT phantom) in 56 cases. Subsequently, 3020 2D x-ray images were generated. Images with bone were input into cycle-consistent adversarial network (CycleGAN) and the bone suppressed images on the XCAT phantom (BSIphantom ) were created. They were then compared to images without bone using the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Next, 1000 non-simulated treatment images from real cases were input into the training model, and bone-suppressed images of the patient (BSIpatient ) were created. Zero means normalized cross correlation (ZNCC) by template matching between each of the actual treatment images and BSIpatient were calculated. RESULTS: BSIphantom values were compared to their paired images without bone of the XCAT phantom test data; SSIM and PSNR were 0.90 ± 0.06 and 24.54 ± 4.48, respectively. It was visually confirmed that only bone was selectively suppressed without significantly affecting tumor visualization. The ZNCC values of the actual treatment images and BSIpatient were 0.763 ± 0.136 and 0.773 ± 0.143, respectively. The BSIpatient showed improved recognition accuracy over the actual treatment images. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed bone suppression imaging technique based on CycleGAN improves image recognition, making it possible to achieve highly accurate motion tracking irradiation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Predicting recurrence following stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for non-small cell lung cancer provides important information for the feasibility of the individualized radiotherapy and allows to select the appropriate treatment strategy based on the risk of recurrence. In this study, we evaluated the performance of both machine learning models using positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) radiomic features for predicting recurrence after SBRT. METHODS: Planning CT and PET images of 82 non-small cell lung cancer patients who performed SBRT at our hospital were used. First, tumors were delineated on each CT and PET of each patient, and 111 unique radiomic features were extracted, respectively. Next, the 10 features were selected using three different feature selection algorithms, respectively. Recurrence prediction models based on the selected features and four different machine learning algorithms were developed, respectively. Finally, we compared the predictive performance of each model for each recurrence pattern using the mean area under the curve (AUC) calculated following the 0.632+ bootstrap method. RESULTS: The highest performance for local recurrence, regional lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis were observed in models using Support vector machine with PET features (mean AUC = 0.646), Naive Bayes with PET features (mean AUC = 0.611), and Support vector machine with CT features (mean AUC = 0.645), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We comprehensively evaluated the performance of prediction model developed for recurrence following SBRT. The model in this study would provide information to predict the recurrence pattern and assist in making treatment strategies.

BACKGROUND: Surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) is adopted by several institutions; however, reports on the phantoms used to assess the precision of the SGRT setup are limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a phantom to verify the accuracy of the irradiation position during skin mark-less SGRT. METHODS: An acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic cube phantom with a diameter of 150 mm on each side containing a dummy target of 15 mm and two types of body surface-shaped phantoms (breast/face shape) that could be attached to the cube phantom were fabricated. Films can be inserted on four sides of the cubic phantom (left, right, anterior and posterior), and the center of radiation can be calculated by irradiating the dummy target with orthogonal MV beams. Three types of SGRT using a VOXELAN-HEV600M (Electronics Research&Development Corporation, Okayama, Japan) were evaluated using this phantom: (i) SGRTCT-a SGRT set-up based solely on a computed tomography (CT)-reference image. (ii) SGRTCT + CBCT-a method where cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) matching was performed after SGRTCT. (iii) SGRTScan-a resetup technique using a scan reference image obtained after completing the (ii) step. RESULTS: Both the breast and face phantoms were recognized in the SGRT system without problems. SGRTScan ensure precision within 1 mm/1° for breast and face verification, respectively. All SGRT methods showed comparable rotational accuracies with no significant disparities. CONCLUSIONS: The developed phantom was useful for verifying the accuracy of skin mark-less SGRT position matching. The SGRTScan demonstrated the feasibility of achieving skin-mark less SGRT with high accuracy, with deviations of less than 1 mm. Additional research is necessary to evaluate the suitability of the developed phantoms for use in various facilities and systems. This phantom could be used for postal surveys in the future.

BACKGROUND: The damping ratio (DR) and the loss modulus (G″) obtained by 3D MR elastography complex modulus analysis has been reported recently to reflect early intrahepatic inflammation, and is expected to be a noninvasive biomarker of inflammation in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the role of the DR and the G″ in Japanese NAFLD patients remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 39 Japanese patients with NAFLD who underwent liver biopsy and 3D MR elastography within 1 month and analyzed the association between DR, G″, and histological activity. RESULTS: Regarding DR, no evident correlation was observed between the DR and histological activity (p = 0.14) when patients with all fibrosis stages were included. However, when patients were restricted up to stage F2 fibrosis, the association of the DR and inflammation became significant, the DR increasing with the degree of activity (p = 0.02). Among the constituents of fibrosis activity, ballooning correlated with the DR (p < 0.01) while lobular inflammation did not. Regarding G″, it was correlated with histological activity (p < 0.01), ballooning (p < 0.01), and lobular inflammation (p < 0.01) in patients with all fibrosis stages and in patients up to F2 fibrosis (p = 0.03 for activity and p = 0.04 for ballooning). The best cutoff value of DR for hepatitis activity in patients within the F2 stage was 0.094 (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.775, 95% CI: 0.529-1.000) and G″ was 0.402 (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.825, 95% CI: 0.628-1.000). CONCLUSIONS: The DR and G″ reflected the histological activity in Japanese patients with NAFLD during the early stage, indicating these values for noninvasive diagnosis of inflammation in Japanese patients with NAFLD.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recently, pemafibrate and a low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) have each been reported to improve fatty liver disease. However, it is unclear whether their combination improves fatty liver disease and is equally effective in obese and non-obese patients. METHODS: In 38 metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) patients, classified by baseline body mass index (BMI), changes in laboratory values, magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), and magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) were studied after 1 year of combined pemafibrate plus mild LCD. RESULTS: The combination treatment resulted in weight loss (P = 0.002), improvement in hepatobiliary enzymes (γ-glutamyl transferase, P = 0.027; aspartate aminotransferase, P < 0.001; alanine transaminase [ALT], P < 0.001), and improvement in liver fibrosis markers (FIB-4 index, P = 0.032; 7 s domain of type IV collagen, P = 0.002; M2BPGi, P < 0.001). Vibration-controlled transient elastography improved from 8.8 to 6.9 kPa (P < 0.001) and MRE improved from 3.1 to 2.8 kPa (P = 0.017) in the liver stiffness. MRI-PDFF improved from 16.6% to 12.3% in liver steatosis (P = 0.007). In patients with a BMI of 25 or higher, improvements of ALT (r = 0.659, P < 0.001) and MRI-PDFF (r = 0.784, P < 0.001) were significantly correlated with weight loss. However, in patients with a BMI below 25, the improvements of ALT or PDFF were not accompanied by weight loss. CONCLUSIONS: Combined treatment with pemafibrate and a low-carbohydrate diet resulted in weight loss and improvements in ALT, MRE, and MRI-PDFF in MAFLD patients. Although such improvements were associated with weight loss in obese patients, the improvements were observed irrespective of weight loss in non-obese patients, indicating this combination can be effective both in obese and non-obese MAFLD patients.

The direct conversion of solar energy to hydrogen is considered as a possible method to produce carbon neutral hydrogen fuel. The mechanism of photocatalytic water splitting involves the chemical breakdown of water and re-assembly into hydrogen and oxygen at the interface of a photocatalyst. The selection rules of a suitable material are well established, but the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms, occurring at the interface between the catalyst and the water, remains missing. Using surface specific sum frequency generation spectroscopy, we present here characterisation of the interface between water and the photocatalyst strontium titanate (SrTiO3). We monitor the OH-stretching vibrations present at the interface. Their variations of intensities and frequencies as functions of isotopic dilution, pH and salt concentration provide information about the nature of the hydrogen bonding environment. We observe the presence of water molecules that flip their orientation at pH 5 indicating the point of zero charge of the SrTiO3 layer. These water molecules are oriented with their hydrogen away from the surface when the pH of the solutions is below 5 and pointing towards the surface when the pH is higher than 5. Besides, water molecules donating a H-bond to probably surface TiOH groups are observed at all pH.

BACKGROUND: Effect of decreased injection flow rate of contrast agent at the same iodine dose and delivery rate on aortic enhancement has not been clearly elucidated. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of decreased injection flow rate of contrast agent on aortic peak enhancement in a dynamic flow phantom and on aortic enhancement in clinical dynamic 80-kVp computed tomography (CT) with contrast dose reduction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the dynamic flow phantom experiment, the effect of a decreased injection flow rate at the same total iodine dose and delivery rate on simulated aortic peak enhancement was evaluated. In the clinical retrospective study, we searched 312 patients with renal dysfunction who underwent an 80-kVp abdominal dynamic CT with 40% reduction of contrast agent from a standard 120-kVp protocol and measured the aortic enhancement at the level of the hepatic hilum. Independent predictors for aortic enhancement were determined by multiple linear regression analysis, and after adjustment of significant predictors, independent variables for acquiring optimal aortic enhancement, ≥300 HU, were determined by multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: In the phantom experiment, decreased flow rate showed a significant but small descent effect (6%-9%) on simulated aortic peak enhancement. In the multiple linear regression analysis, only age was an independent predictor of aortic enhancement; there was no independent predictor for optimal age-adjusted aortic enhancement of ≥300 HU. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased injection flow rate had a small influence on aortic enhancement in vitro but had no significant effect on the aortic enhancement in clinical dynamic 80-kVp CT.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing hemodynamic changes before and after balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) remains unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of 4D flow MRI for assessing hemodynamic changes in the portal venous system before and after BRTO. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 10 patients (7 men, 3 women; mean age = 67 years) with liver cirrhosis who had a high risk of gastric variceal bleeding or hepatic encephalopathy. Non-contrast 4D flow MRI of the upper abdomen was performed before and after BRTO. In addition, we compared the blood flow rates in the portal vein (PV), superior mesenteric vein (SMV), splenic vein (SV), left renal vein, and inferior vena cava before and after BRTO. Moreover, the flow directions of the SMV and SV before and after BRTO were assessed using both portography and 4D flow MRI. RESULTS: There was a significant post-BRTO increase in the blood flow rate in the PV and SV (P < 0.05). There was no significant post-BRTO change in the blood flow rates in the SMV, inferior vena cava, and left renal vein. In four patients, portography confirmed that hepatofugal flow in the SV and SMV changed to hepatopetal flow after BRTO. Moreover, 4D flow MRI correctly assessed the flow directions in the SMV and SV in 70%-100% of the patients. CONCLUSION: 4D flow MRI can be used to detect hemodynamic changes in the portal venous system before and after BRTO.

BACKGROUND: There are some motion platforms for radiotherapy quality assurance. However, no platform with two drive systems that can move along three axes is available. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to develop a dynamic motion platform with two drive systems capable of three-axis motion and to evaluate its motion performance. METHODS: The developed moving platform had two drive systems that use the same equipment. Each axis of the platform used can support a maximum load of 10 kg. The motors for moving the platform in each direction are capable of a drive stroke up to 40 mm. The drive speed is 30 mm/s at maximum load fluctuation. To evaluate the static positional accuracy of this system with an arbitrary input movement, the XYZ position of each axis was measured using a coordinate measuring machine operating from 0 to 40 mm at 10 mm intervals. In addition, the accuracy of dynamic motion was verified with Sine waveform inputs of different patterns to the three axes for approximately 60 s, and they were compared with the resulting detected signals by SyncTrax. RESULTS: The two drive systems were successfully operated on three axes by using independent control systems. For static position, the accuracies were within 0.2 mm, 0.05 mm, and 0.14 mm for lateral, longitudinal, and vertical directions, respectively. For dynamic motion, the mean absolute errors in the X, Y, and Z axes between the platform inputs and SyncTrax detected signals were 0.14 ± 0.10 mm, 0.16 ± 0.12 mm, and 0.16 ± 0.11 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A new dynamic platform for radiation therapy with two drive systems capable of three-axis motion was developed, and the positional accuracy of the drive axes was confirmed to be less than 0.2 mm.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare fiducial markers used in CyberKnife treatment in terms of metal artifact intensity observed in CT images and fiducial recognition in the CyberKnife system affected by patient body thickness and type of marker. METHODS: Five markers, ACCULOC 0.9 mm × 3 mm, Ball type Gold Anchor (GA) 0.28 mm × 10 mm, 0.28 mm × 20 mm, and novel size GA 0.4 mm × 10 mm, 0.4 mm × 20 mm were evaluated. To evaluate metal artifacts of CT images, two types of CT images of water-equivalent gels with each marker were acquired using Aquilion LB CT scanner, one applied SEMAR (SEMAR-on) and the other did not apply this technique (SEMAR-off). The evaluation metric of artifact intensity (MSD ) which represents a variation of CT values were compared for each marker. Next, 5, 15, and 20 cm thickness of Tough Water (TW) was placed on the gel under the condition of overlapping the vertebral phantom in the Target Locating System, and the live image of each marker was acquired to compare fiducial recognition. RESULTS: The mean MSD of SEMAR-off was 78.80, 74.50, 97.25, 83.29, and 149.64 HU for ACCULOC, GA0.28 mm × 10 mm, 20 mm, and 0.40 mm × 10 mm, 20 mm, respectively. In the same manner, that of SEMAR-on was 23.52, 20.26, 26.76, 24.89, and 33.96 HU, respectively. Fiducial recognition decreased in the order of 5, 15, and 20 cm thickness, and GA 0.4 × 20 mm showed the best recognition at thickness of 20 cm TW. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated the potential to reduce metal artifacts in the CT image to the same level for all the markers we evaluated by applying SEMAR. Additionally, the fiducial recognition of each marker may vary depending on the thickness of the patient's body. Particularly, we showed that GA 0.40 × 20 mm may have more optimal recognition for CyberKnife treatment in cases of high bodily thickness in comparison to the other markers.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) is a non-invasive treatment option for primary renal cell carcinoma, for which long-term data are awaited. The primary aim of this study was to report on long-term efficacy and safety of SABR for localised renal cell carcinoma. METHODS: This study was an individual patient data meta-analysis, for which patients undergoing SABR for primary renal cell carcinoma across 12 institutions in five countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, and the USA) were eligible. Eligible patients had at least 2 years of follow-up, were aged 18 years or older, had any performance status, and had no previous local therapy. Patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma or upper-tract urothelial carcinoma were excluded. SABR was delivered as a single or multiple fractions of greater than 5 Gy. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed local failure per the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours version 1.1, and was evaluated using cumulative incidence functions. FINDINGS: 190 patients received SABR between March 23, 2007, and Sept 20, 2018. Single-fraction SABR was delivered in 81 (43%) patients and multifraction SABR was delivered in 109 (57%) patients. Median follow-up was 5·0 years (IQR 3·4-6·8). 139 (73%) patients were men, and 51 (27%) were women. Median age was 73·6 years (IQR 66·2-82·0). Median tumour diameter was 4·0 cm (IQR 2·8-4·9). 96 (75%) of 128 patients with available operability details were deemed inoperable by the referring urologist. 56 (29%) of 190 patients had a solitary kidney. Median baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 60·0 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (IQR 42·0-76·0) and decreased by 14·2 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (IQR 5·4-22·5) by 5 years post-SABR. Seven (4%) patients required dialysis post-SABR. The cumulative incidence of local failure at 5 years was 5·5% (95% CI 2·8-9·5) overall, with single-fraction SABR yielding fewer local failures than multifraction (Gray's p=0·020). There were no grade 3 toxic effects or treatment-related deaths. One (1%) patient developed an acute grade 4 duodenal ulcer and late grade 4 gastritis. INTERPRETATION: SABR is effective and safe in the long term for patients with primary renal cell carcinoma. Single-fraction SABR might yield less local failure than multifraction, but further evidence from randomised trials is needed to elucidate optimal treatment schedules. These mature data lend further support for renal SABR as a treatment option for patients unwilling or unfit to undergo surgery. FUNDING: None.

BACKGROUND: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is increasingly applied to the diagnosis of bone marrow failure such as myeloproliferative neoplasm, aplastic anemia, and myelodysplastic syndrome, as well as malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma. However, few studies have shown a normal FDG uptake pattern. This study aimed to establish a standard of bone marrow FDG uptake by a reproducible quantitative method with fewer steps using deep learning-based organ segmentation. METHODS: Bone marrow PET images were obtained using segmented whole-spine and pelvic bone marrow cavity CT as mask images using a commercially available imaging workstation that implemented an automatic organ segmentation algorithm based on deep learning. The correlation between clinical indicators and quantitative PET parameters, including histogram features, was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 98 healthy adults were analyzed. The volume of bone marrow PET extracted in men was significantly higher than that in women (p < 0.0001). Univariate and multivariate regression analyses showed that mean of standardized uptake value corrected by lean body mass (SULmean) and entropy in both men and women were inversely correlated with age (all p < 0.0001), and SULmax in women were also inversely correlated with age (p = 0.011). CONCLUSION: A normal FDG uptake pattern was demonstrated by simplified FDG PET/CT bone marrow quantification.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) using a respiratory control device, Abches, in patients with left-sided breast cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Abches comprises a main body, an indicator panel, and two fulcrums, one each on the chest and abdomen. Forty left side breast cancer patients treated with DIBH using abches were enrolled in this study. For all patients, CT images were taken three times to confirm the target position inside the body and to check the breath-hold reproducibility. Three anatomical points on the nipple, sternum, and heart were selected as measurement points on CT images. After measuring the coordinates, breath-hold reproducibility was defined as the mean of the absolute difference in the coordinates between the three CT images. The maximum differences were also investigated. In addition, the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was calculated to examine the displacement of the heart volume in detail. Moreover, digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) and linac graphs (LGs) were used to measure the positional accuracy of the chest and heart. RESULTS: The reproducibility in all patients was within 0.75 mm for the nipple, 0.78 mm for the sternum, and 2.18 mm for the heart in each direction. Similarly, the maximum displacements for all patients were within 1.90 mm, 1.69 mm, and 4.75 mm, respectively, in each direction. For heart volume, the average DSC for all cases was 0.93 ± 0.01. The differences between the DRR and LG images were 1.70 ± 1.10 mm and 2.10 ± 1.60 mm, for the chest and heart, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that DIBH using Abches can be performed with good target reproducibility of less than 3 mm with proper breath-hold practice, whereas the heartbeat-derived reproducibility of the cardiac position is poor and needs to be monitored carefully during treatment simulation.

Purpose: This study aims to identify the hallmarks of gadoxetate disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from hypervascular liver metastases (HLMs). Methods: Between January 2008 and October 2020, among patients who underwent gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI, those who met the following criteria were retrospectively included: without chronic hepatitis or liver stiffness ≤ 2.5 kPa on magnetic resonance elastography or F0/F1 on pathological assessment. Two blinded radiologists reviewed the imaging findings to judge the presence or absence of the enhancing capsule, nonperipheral washout, corona enhancement, hypointensity in the transitional/hepatobiliary phase (HBP), hyperintensity on T2-weighted/diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), mosaic architecture, and blood products/fat in mass. The lesion-to-liver signal intensity ratios in HBP and DWI were also calculated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the imaging hallmarks distinguishing HCC from HLM. Interobserver agreement was calculated using kappa values and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Results: The final study cohort comprised 72 lesions in 44 patients (mean age, 65.0±11.9 years). Univariate analysis revealed higher frequencies of the following features in HCC than in HLM (P < .10): nonperipheral washout, corona enhancement, transitional phase hypointensity, mosaic architecture, and fat in mass (P = .002-.073). Multivariate analysis revealed that nonperipheral washout and mosaic architecture favored the diagnosis of HCC over that of HLM with odds ratios of 7.66 and 14.6, respectively (P = .038 and .029, respectively). The interobserver agreement for each item was moderate or substantial (kappa or ICC = .447-.792). Conclusion: Peripheral washout and mosaic architecture may be reliable imaging hallmarks for distinguishing HCC from HLM.

Background: This study aimed to investigate whether ipsilateral lung doses (ILDs) could be predicted by anatomical indexes measured using diagnostic computed tomography (CT) prior to the planning stage of breast radiation therapy (RT). Materials and methods: The thoracic diameters and the length of lines drawn manually were measured on diagnostic CT images. The parameters of interest were the skin maximum lung distance (sMLD), central lung distance (CLD), Haller index (HI), and body mass index (BMI). Lung dose-volume histograms were created with conformal planning, and the lung volumes receiving 5-40 Gy (V5-V40) were calculated. Linear regression models were used to investigate the correlations between the anatomical indexes and dose differences and to estimate the slope and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 160 patients who had undergone three-dimensional conformal RT after breast-conserving surgery were included. Univariable analysis revealed that the sMLD (p < 0.001), CLD (p < 0.001), HI (p = 0.002), and BMI (p < 0.001) were significantly correlated with the V20. However, multivariable analysis revealed that only the sMLD (slope: 0.147, p = 0.001, 95% CI: 0.162-0.306) and CLD (0.157, p = 0.005, 0.048-0.266) were strongly correlated with the V20. The p-value for the sMLD was the lowest among the p-values for all indexes, thereby indicating that the sMLD had the best predictive power for ILD. Conclusions: sMLD and CLD are anatomical markers that can be used to predict ILD in whole breast RT. An sMLD > 20.5 mm or a CLD > 24.3 mm positively correlated with a high ILD.

OBJECTIVE. The left inferior phrenic vein (LIPV) can be an origin of a gastrorenal shunt from gastric varices. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the angiographic anatomy of the LIPV, particularly anastomoses of the LIPV with the portal vein (PV). SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Of 240 patients with primary aldosteronism who underwent adrenal venous sampling from April 2011 to July 2019, 236 had normal liver and renal function and were included in this study. Of those patients, 214 had evaluable LIPV venography. The angiographic anatomy of the LIPV was classified as type 1 when the subdiaphragmatic transverse part of the LIPV could be visualized or as type 2 when it could not. Type 1 was subclassified into type 1a, which was defined as the transverse part of the LIPV connected with a single vein, or type 1b, which was defined as the transverse part of the LIPV connected with several veins via anastomoses. Type 2 LIPVs were subclassified into type 2a, in which the LIPV had an undeveloped vertical part; type 2b, in which the LIPV had backflow into systemic veins; or type 2c, in which the LIPV had a connection to the PV. The presence of an anastomosis with the PV was defined as the PV being visualizable on LIPV venography. RESULTS. Assessment of LIPV venography revealed type 1 in 71.5% (153/214) of patients, including type 1a (22.4%, 48/214) and type 1b (49.1%, 105/214). Type 2 LIPVs were observed in 28.5% (61/214) of patients, including types 2a (6.5%, 14/214), 2b (11.2%, 24/214), and 2c (10.7%, 23/214). An anastomosis of the LIPV with the PV was found in 28.0% (60/214) of patients, including 10.7% (23/214) with type 2c and 17.3% (37/214) with type 1 with a visible PV. The anastomoses of the LIPV with the PV were of various sizes. CONCLUSION. The angiographic anatomy of the LIPV varied and was commonly formed from several veins connected by anastomoses. An anastomosis between the LIPV and PV, which might be the origin of gastric varices, was found in 28.0% of patients.

Oxygen evolution at water-solid interfaces is a key reaction for sustainable energy production. Although some intermediate states have been detected in transient absorption spectroscopy, the O2 evolution kinetics after the multi-step, four-electron oxidation of water remain unknown. In this study, transient amperometry with a microelectrode was applied to operando O2 detection over Al-doped SrTiO3 particles doubly loaded with RhCrOx and CoOy cocatalysts, an efficient photocatalyst for the overall water-splitting reaction. Electrochemical O2 detection at intervals of 0.1 s unexpectedly indicated instantaneous O2 adsorption and desorption in addition to steady, photocatalytic O2 evolution on the photocatalyst modified under intense light irradiation. We hypothesized that electrons excited in the conduction band were transferred to O2 in water thorough Ti cations neighboring an oxygen anion vacancy on the modified Al-doped SrTiO3. The negatively charged O2 was then bound to the Ti cations. It was neutralized and released when shaded through electron back-transfer to the conduction band. The hypothesized mechanism for O2 adsorption and desorption was compared with the photoinduced O2 desorption known to occur on anion vacancies of TiO2(110). The microelectrode-based transient amperometry demonstrated in this paper will be applied to many other phenomena at liquid-solid interfaces.

NaTaO3, a semiconductor with a perovskite structure, has long been known as a highly active photocatalyst for overall water splitting when appropriately doped with La cations. A profound understanding of the surface feature and why and how it may control the water splitting activity is critical because redox reactions take place at the surface. One surface feature characteristic of La-doped NaTaO3 is a La-rich layer (shell) capping La-poor bulk (core). In this study, we investigate the role of the shell in core-shell-structured La-doped NaTaO3 through systematic chemical etching with an aqueous HF solution. We find that the La-rich shell plays a role in electron-hole recombination, electron mobility and water splitting activity. The shallow electron traps populating the La-rich shell trap the photoexcited electrons, decreasing their mobility. The shallowly trapped electrons remain reactive and are readily available on the surface to be extracted by the cocatalysts for the reduction reaction evolving H2. The presently employed chemical etching method also confirms the presence of a La concentration gradient in the core that regulates the steady-state electron population and water splitting activity. Here, we successfully reveal the nanoarchitecture-photoactivity relationship of core-shell-structured La-doped NaTaO3 that thereby allows tuning of the surface features and spatial distribution of dopants to increase the concentration of photoexcited electrons and therefore the water splitting activity. By recognizing the key factors that control the photocatalytic properties of a highly active catalyst, we can then devise proper strategies to design new photocatalyst materials with breakthrough performances.

Atomic force microscopy can observe structures of liquids (solvents) on solid surfaces as oscillating force curves. The oscillation originates from the solvation force, which is affected by the interaction between the probe, substrate, and solvents. To investigate the effects of the interactions on the force curve, we calculated the force curves by integral equation theory with various probe and substrate conditions. The probe solvophilicity affected the force curves more than the substrate solvophilicity in our calculation, and its reason is qualitatively explained by the amount of the desolvated solvents. We evaluated the probes and parameters in terms of the qualitative estimation of the number density distribution of the solvent on the wall. The negative of the force curve's derivative with respect to the surface separation reflected the number density distribution better than the force curve. This parameter is based on the method that is proposed previously by Amano et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 18, 15534 (2016)]. The normalized frequency shift can also be used for the qualitative estimation of the number density distribution if the cantilever amplitude is small. Solvophobic probes reflected the number density distribution better than the solvophilic probes. Solvophilic probes resulted in larger oscillation amplitudes than solvophobic probes and are suitable for measurements with a high S/N ratio.
