RESUMO

Electrochromic batteries as emerging smart energy devices are highly sought after owing to their real-time energy monitoring through visual color conversion. However, their large-scale applicability is hindered by insufficient capacity, inadequate cycling stability, and limited color variation. Herein, a flexible Zn-ion electrochromic battery (ZIEB) was assembled with sodium vanadate (VONa+) cathode, ion-redistributing hydrogel electrolyte, and Zn anode to address these challenges. The electrolyte contains anchored -SO3 - and -NH3 +, which facilitates ionic transportation and prevents Zn dendrite formation by promoting orientated Zn2+ deposition on the Zn (002) surface. The ZIEB exhibits a continuous reversible color transition, ranging from fully charged orange to mid-charged brown and drained green. It also demonstrates a high specific capacity of 302.4 mAh ⋅ g-1 at 0.05 A ⋅ g-1 with a capacity retention of 96.3 % after 500 cycles at 3 A ⋅ g-1. Additionally, the ZIEB maintains stable energy output even under bending, rolling, knotting, and twisting. This work paves a new strategy for the design of smart energy devices in wearable electronics.

RESUMO

Talaromycosis is a life-threatening fungal disease commonly seen in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is endemic in Southern China and Southeast countries. The diagnostic methods available for talaromycosis are relatively time-consuming and yield a high mortality. Therefore, early diagnosis of talaromycosis is extremely important. We aimed to determine a potential method for assisting in its early diagnosis. A total of 283 patients with AIDS admitted to our hospital were prospectively included in this cross-sectional study and divided into those with Talaromyces marneffei (TSM group, n = 93) and those without Talaromyces marneffei (non-TSM group, n = 190). The diagnostic accuracy of the Mp1p enzyme immunoassay (EIA), galactomannan (GM) assay, and blood culture performed within 3 days of hospitalisation were evaluated, using talaromycosis confirmed by culture and/or pathology as the gold standard. The positivity rates in the Mp1p EIA, GM assay, and blood culture were 72%, 64.5%, and 81.7%, respectively, in the TSM group. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the Mp1p EIA were 72.0% (67/93), 96.8% (184/190), 91.8% (67/73), and 87.6% (184/210), respectively. The Mp1p EIA showed a substantial agreement with the gold standard (kappa: 0.729) and superiority to the GM assay (kappa: 0.603); it also showed a superior diagnostic accuracy in the patients with CD4+ counts of < 50 cells/µL compared to those with CD4+ counts ranged from 50-100 cells/µL. The Mp1p EIA has the advantage of assisting in the early diagnosis of talaromycosis in patients with AIDS, especially those with low CD4+ counts.

RESUMO

Melatonin exhibits antitumour activities in the treatment of many human cancers. In the present study, we aimed to improve the therapeutic potential of melatonin in gastric cancer. Our results confirmed that melatonin dose-dependently suppressed the proliferation and necrosis, and increased G0/G1 phase arrest, apoptosis, autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The Ras-Raf-MAPK signalling pathway was activated in cells after melatonin treatment. RNA-seq was performed and GSEA analysis further confirmed that many down-regulated genes in melatonin-treated cells were associated with proliferation. However, GSEA analysis also indicated that many pathways related to metastasis were increased after melatonin treatment. Subsequently, combinatorial treatment was conducted to further investigate the therapeutic outcomes of melatonin. A combination of melatonin and thapsigargin increased the apoptotic rate and G0/G1 cell cycle arrest when compared to treatment with melatonin alone. Melatonin in combination with thapsigargin triggered the increased expression of Bip, LC3-II, phospho-Erk1/2 and phospho-p38 MAPK. In addition, STF-083010, an IRE1a inhibitor, further exacerbated the decrease in survival rate induced by combinatorial treatment with melatonin and thapsigargin. Collectively, melatonin was effective in gastric cancer treatment by modifying ER stress.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA was found in the intestines and feces, but its clinical significance is not completely clear. We aim to characterize the longitudinal test results of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in anal swabs and to explore the association with disease severity. METHODS: We included laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, who were hospitalized in Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital and excluded those who had not received anal swabs for SARS-COV-2 RNA testing. Epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data were obtained. Throat swabs and anal swabs were collected periodically for SARS-COV-2 RNA detection. RESULTS: Two hundred and seventeen eligible patients (median aged 50 years, 50.2% were females) were analyzed. 21.2% (46/217) of the patients were detected with SARS-CoV-2 RNA in anal swabs. The duration of viral RNA was longer, but the viral load was lower in anal swabs than throat swabs in the early stage of the disease. During a median follow-up of 20 days, 30 (13.8%) patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for high-flow nasal cannula or higher-level oxygen support measures to correct hypoxemia. Detectable viral RNA in anal swabs (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 2.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-5.24), increased C-reactive protein (aHR, 3.14; 95% CI, 1.35-7.32) and lymphocytopenia (aHR, 3.12; 95% CI, 1.46-6.67) were independently associated with ICU admission. The cumulative incidence of ICU admission was higher among patients with detectable viral RNA in anal swabs (26.3% vs 10.7%, P = .006). CONCLUSION: Detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the digestive tract was a potential warning indicator of severe disease.

RESUMO

Carbon nanofibers (CNF) with a 1D porous structure offer promising support to encapsulate transition-metal oxides in energy storage/conversion relying on their high specific surface area and pore volume. Here, the preparation of NiO nanoparticle-dispersed electrospun N-doped porous CNF (NiO/PCNF) and as free-standing film electrode for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors is reported. Polyacrylonitrile and nickel acetylacetone are selected as precursors of CNF and Ni sources, respectively. Dicyandiamide not only improves the specific surface area and pore volume, but also increases the N-doping level of PCNF. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between NiO nanoparticles (NPs) and PCNF, the prepared free-standing NiO/PCNF electrodes show a high specific capacitance of 850 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 in 6 m KOH aqueous solution, good rate capability, as well as excellent long-term cycling stability. Moreover, NiO NPs dispersed in PCNF and large specific surface area provide many electroactive sites, leading to high CO2 uptake, and high-efficiency CO2 electroreduction. The synthesis strategy in this study provides a new insight into the design and fabrication of promising multifunctional materials for high-performance supercapacitors and CO2 electroreduction.

RESUMO

Polyurea (PUa) adhesives are renowned for their exceptional adhesion to diverse substrates even in harsh environments. However, the presence of quadruple bidentate intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the polymer chains creates a trade-off between cohesive energy and interfacial adhesive energy. To overcome this challenge, a series of CO2-sourced ionic PUa adhesives with ultratough adhesion to various substrates are developed. The incorporated ionic segments within the adhesive serve to partially mitigate the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions while conferring unique electrostatic interactions, leading to both high cohesive energy and interfacial adhesive energy. The maximum adhesive strength of 10.9 MPa can be attained by ionizing the CO2-sourced PUa using bromopropane and subsequently exchanging the anion with lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Additionally, these ionic PUa adhesives demonstrate several desirable properties such as low-temperature stability (-80 °C), resistance to organic solvents and water, high flame retardancy, antibacterial activity, and UV-fluorescence, thereby expanding their potential applications. This study presents a general and effective approach for designing high-strength adhesives suitable for a wide array of uses.

RESUMO

Large amounts of small molecule dyes leak into the ecosystems annually in harmful and unsustainable ways. Polymer dyes have attracted much attention because of their high migration resistance, excellent stability, and minimized leakage. However, the complex synthesis process, high cost, and poor degradability hinder their widespread application. Herein, green and sustainable polymer dyes are prepared using natural dye quercetin (Qc) and CO2 through a one-step process. The CO2-sourced polymer dyes show strong migration resistance, high stability, and can be degraded on demand. Additionally, the CO2-sourced polymer dyes showed unique responses to Zn2+, leading to significantly enhanced fluorescence, highlighting their potential for information encryption/decryption. The CO2-sourced polymer dyes can solve the environmental hazards caused by small molecule dye leakage and promote the carbon cycle process. Meanwhile, the one-step synthesis process is expected to achieve sustainable and widespread utilization of CO2-sourced polymer dyes.

RESUMO

As natural adjuvants, the bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMV) hold great potential in cancer vaccines. However, the inherent immunotoxicity of OMV and the rarity of tumor-specific antigens seriously hamper the clinical translation of OMV-based cancer vaccines. Herein, metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) are used to attenuate the toxicity of OMV, meanwhile, provide tumor antigens via the chemodynamic effect induced immunogenic cell death (ICD). Specifically, MPNs are assembled on the OMV surface through the coordination reaction between ferric ions and tannic acid. The iron-based "prison" is locally collapsed in the tumor microenvironment (TME) with both low pH and high ATP features, and thus the systemic toxicity of OMV is significantly attenuated. The released ferric ions in TME promote the ICD of cancer cells through Fenton reaction and then the generation of abundant tumor antigens, which can be used to fabricate in-situ vaccines by converging with OMV. Together with the immunomodulatory effect of OMV, potent tumor repression on a bilateral tumor model is achieved with good biosafety.

RESUMO

In areas with serious pollution problems, the government designates a special emission limit (SEL) for pollution control and environmental protection in China. This paper examines the effects of chemical oxygen demand (COD) SEL on firms' production activity and market performance in the pulp and paper industry in the Lake Tai area in China. Using firm-level data, we employ a difference-in-differences strategy and find that SEL has a negative impact on the production scale, profitability, and market size of the regulated firms, while showing no significant impact on firm exports. The heterogeneity tests suggest that the impact of SEL on production and market performance varies with firm ownership, firm size, and target market. The reallocation effect of production shifts extra production from exited firms to existing firms, which explains the expansion of production scale and market size for SOEs and large-sized regulated firms. Compared with the decline of production scale, the inventory alleviation effect reduces the negative impact of stricter environmental regulation on firm performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Talaromycosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients. However, few researches have explored the prevalence in Southern China and fully assessed the value of the Mp1p antigen screening for the diagnosis of talaromycosis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed a cross-sectional study of HIV-infected antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve adult patients who were seen in 2018 at Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University. Serum samples collected from all the 784 enrolled patients were tested for Mp1p antigen using double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A culture of pathogen was conducted in 350 clinically suspected patients to confirm talaromycosis. The overall prevalence of talaromycosis based on the Mp1p antigen detection was 11.4% (89/784) and peaked at 32.2% (75/233) in patients with CD4+ ≤50 Nr/µl. Logistic regression analysis found Mp1p antigen positive rate decreased with the increase in CD4+ counts (OR 0.982, 95% CI 0.977-0.987, P<0.01). The optimal cut-off point of the CD4+ count was 50 Nr/µl or less. Among the 350 patients received both fungal culture and Mp1p antigen detection, 95/350 (27.1%) patients were culture-positive for a Talaromyces marneffei, 75/350 (21.4%) patients were Mp1p antigen positive. The Mp1p antigen assay showed a good agreement to the culture of pathogen, and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and kappa value was 71.6% (68/95), 97.3% (248/255), 90.7% (68/75), 90.2% (248/275), and 0.737, respectively. The screening accuracy of the Mp1p antigen assay in patients with CD4+ counts of ≤50 Nr/µl was superior to that in those with higher CD4+ counts. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Mp1p antigen screening can be an effective tool for more efficient diagnosis of Talaromycosis, especially in HIV/AIDS patients with low CD4+ counts. Future validation studies are needed.

RESUMO

Purpose To explore the diagnostic value of dif-ferent fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH)signal types and chromosomal karyotyping analysis in ETV6/RUNX1-positive B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia(B-ALL).Methods Clini-cal data of 164 newly diagnosed ETV6/RUNX1-positive B-ALL patients were collected for retrospective analysis of chromosomal karyotyping and FISH.Results Among the 164 patients,163 positive cases were detected by FISH,among them the classic 2F1R1G signal type was found in 61 cases, and 102 cases showed non-classic signal types, with 2F1G and 1F1R2G signal types being the most common, indicating ETV6 deletion.Among them, the classic 2F1R1G signal type was found in 61 cases, and 102 cases showed non-classic signal types, with 2F1G and 1F1R2G signal types being the most common, indicating ETV6 deletion.Among the 125 children who could undergo karyoty-ping analysis,106 had a normal karyotype and 19 had an abnor-mal karyotype, with no detection of t(12;21)translocation.Conclusion FISH technology has high sensitivity in detecting ETV6/RUNX1 fusion genes, and it often manifests as non-clas-sic signal types, including ETV6 deletions.Chromosomal karyo-typing analysis helps to identify complex karyotypes and polyploidy but is not conducive to detecting t(12;21)fusion.Therefore,both FISH signal types and karyotyping analysis play indispensable roles in ETV6/RUNX1-positive B-ALL.

RESUMO

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanotubes@MnO2 (N-CNTs@MnO2 ) nanocomposites are prepared through the in situ growth of MnO2 nanosheets on N-CNTs derived from polypyrrole nanotubes (PNTs). Benefiting from the synergistic effects between N-CNTs (high conductivity and N doping level) and MnO2 nanosheets (high theoretical capacity), the as-prepared N-CNTs@MnO2 -800 nanocomposites show a specific capacitance of 219 F g-1 at a current density of 1.0 A g-1 , which is higher than that of pure MnO2 nanosheets (128 F g-1 ) and PNTs (42 F g-1 ) in 0.5 m Na2 SO4 solution. Meanwhile, the capacitance retention of 86.8 % (after 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1 ) indicates an excellent electrochemical performance of N-CNTs@MnO2 prepared in this work.

RESUMO

Heteroatom-doped carbon materials have been considered as potential substitutes for Pt-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline fuel cells. Here we report the synthesis of oxygen-containing nitrogen-doped carbon (ONC) nanosheets through the carbonization of a mixture that contained glucose and dicyandiamide (DCDA). In situ formed graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) derived from DCDA provided a nitrogen-rich template, thereby facilitating the formation of ONC nanosheets. The resultant ONC materials with high nitrogen content, high specific surface areas, and highly mesoporous total volume displayed excellent electrochemical performance, including a similar ORR onset potential, half-potential, a higher diffusion-limited current, and excellent tolerance to methanol than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Moreover, the ONC-850 nanosheet displayed high long-term durability even after 1000 cycles as well as a high electron transfer number of 3.92 (4.0 for Pt/C). Additionally, this work provides deeper insight into these materials and a versatile strategy for the synthesis of cost-effective 2D N-doped carbon electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Avian tuberculosis is a contagious disease affecting various domestic and wild bird species, and is caused by Mycobacterium avium . It is reported extremely rarely in commercial poultry flocks and has not been reported in commercial domestic ducks to date, with domestic ducks reported to be moderately resistant to M. avium infection. Here, we report the outbreak of avian tuberculosis in commercial Pekin duck ( Anas platyrhynchos domestica) flocks. Postmortem and histopathologic findings included nodules presenting in the visceral organs of ducks, and granulomas with central caseous necrosis surrounded by infiltrating lymphocytes. The M. avium pathogen was isolated and further identified by Ziehl-Neelsen staining and PCR based on insert sequence IS901 and the 16S rRNA gene. We highlight that avian tuberculosis not only has economic significance for the duck industry, but also presents a potential zoonotic hazard to humans.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:Damage to nasal ciliated epithelial cels can lead to a severe injury in nasal biological function. Compared with other adult stem cels, human umbilical cord blood stem cels have better differentiation potential. OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of human umbilical cord blood stem cels differentiating into nasal ciliated epithelial cels through in vitro culture and induction techniques. METHODS:Normal and healthy umbilical cord blood samples were colected to isolate human umbilical cord blood stem cels, folowed by identification and subculturein vitro. Umbilical cord blood stem cels at passage 3 were infected with recombinant adeno-associated virus carrying enhanced green fluorescent protein and cultured using air liquid interface culture method. Thereafter, PCR assay was employed for detecting MUCS expression in cultured stem cels at 1 and 2 weeks after induction, and immunofluorescent staining for FOXJ1 was performed at 3 weeks. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:After subculture, passage 3 umbilical cord blood stem cels that could express stem cel surface markers were visible in a uniform shape and had good refraction. After 3 hours of gene transfection, green fluorescence issued from the passage 3 cels were visible, and the cel positive rate was up to 96.2% until 48 hours, indicating good transfection efficiency. RT-PCR findings showed that MUC8 mRNA had no expression in the umbilical cord blood stem cels, but expressed strongly in the nasal ciliated epithelial cels, whose expression was weak at 1 week of culture and increased at 2 weeks. Additionaly, the positive expression of FOXJ1 red fluorescence was observed under the transfection of green fluorescent protein. These results suggest that human umbilical cord blood stem cels could differentiate into nasal epithelial cels under suitable conditions.

RESUMO

Objective To investigate the expression of GRP78 and caspase-12 on the auditory cortex and to study the effects of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the auditory cortex neuron apoptosis after the brain ischemia reperfusion injury in guinea pig. Methods Fifty healthy male guinea pigs were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups which were hormal group group A(reperfusion for 6 hours),group B(reperfusion for 12 hours),group C (reperfusion for 24 hours),group D(reperfusion for 72 hours). The cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury model was produced by the occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries. The guinea pigs were sacrificed at reperfusion of 6, 12,24,and 72 hours respectively after they received ABR tests. The pathological changes were observed by HE and the levels of GRP78 and caspase-12 protein were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results The hearing thresholds increased gradually from the normal group to group B,and decreased gradually from group C to group D,but the thresholds of group D were still higher than that of the normal group.HE staining showed that the neurons in the normal control group were arranged in order, the cytoplasm was abundant, large and round. The cells were stained clearly. After reperfusion, the number of neurons in each time point was decreased, the nucleus presented atrophic, fragmented, the disappeared. The expression of GRP78 and caspase-12 protein in normal con-trol group was only a trace or a small amount by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The expression of GRP78 and caspase-12 began to inerease. The expression of GRP78 reached the peak at reperfusion of 12 hours and de-creased gradually. There were significant statistic differences between each group comparison. The expression of caspase-12 reached the peak at reperfusion of 24 hours, then decreased gradually. There was no statistic difference between group A and group B.There were significant statistic differences anong other groups. Conclusion Endo-plasmic reticulum stress(ERS)may be induced by brain ischemia reperfusion injury, and can increase the expression of GRP78 and caspase-12.GRP78 and caspase-12 participate in the process of neuron apoptosis on auditory cor-tex caused by ERS.
