RESUMO

The assessment of offenders' risk of reoffending, particularly sexual reoffending, is a core activity of forensic mental health practitioners. The purpose of these assessments is to reduce the risk of harm to the public, but they are controversial and become more contentious when Australian practitioners who want to undertake such assessments in an ethically responsible way must use reliable validated instruments, disclose the limitations of their assessment methods, instruments and data to judicial decision-makers and understand how decision-makers might use their reports. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to explore the practices of Australian practitioners and courts in respect of the assessment of Australian Indigenous male sexual offenders' risk of reoffending. We could not identify an instrument that has been developed for the assessment of this population group. Australian courts differ in whether they admit and give weight to practitioners' evidence and opinions based on data obtained with non-validated instruments. We could only identify three possible predictor variables with enough quantitative support to justify including them in an instrument that could be used to assess Indigenous sexual offenders. There is a need for research regarding the validity of the instruments that practitioners use.

Wild relatives of domesticated Capsicum represent substantial genetic diversity and thus sources of traits of potential interest. Furthermore, the hybridization compatibility between members of Capsicum species complexes remains unresolved. Improving our understanding of the relationship between Capsicum species relatedness and their ability to form hybrids is a highly pertinent issue. Through the development of novel interspecific hybrids in this study, we demonstrate interspecies compatibility is not necessarily reflected in relatedness according to established Capsicum genepool complexes. Based on a phylogeny constructed by genotyping using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and with a portion of the waxy locus, and through principal component analysis (PCA) of phenotypic data, we clarify the relationships among wild and domesticated Capsicum species. Together, the phylogeny and hybridization studies provide evidence for the misidentification of a number of species from the World Vegetable Center genebank included in this study. The World Vegetable Center holds the largest collection of Capsicum genetic material globally, therefore this may reflect a wider issue in the misidentification of Capsicum wild relatives. The findings presented here provide insight into an apparent disconnect between compatibility and relatedness in the Capsicum genus, which will be valuable in identifying candidates for future breeding programs.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is used in radiotherapy planning, and increasingly in on-treatment guidance. The potential for the MR environment to be hazardous, without stringent safe working practices, is real. Guidance suggests all workers in MRI undergo annual safety training. To facilitate a tangible MR safety program, an electronic learning module was created and evaluated. METHODS: An existing presentation, normally delivered face-to-face, was modified and questions added to test knowledge. The module was delivered and feedback collected, together with answers to the questions, over three phases to ensure deliverability, clarity, and robustness. These comprised an initial pilot phase for non-MR personnel, an evaluation phase for staff renewing annual MR safety training, and finally for new therapeutic radiographer graduates, a test-retest methodology. RESULTS: Seven participants took part in the initial pilot phase, followed by thirty-one in the evaluation phase. Participants included radiographers (therapeutic and diagnostic), play specialists, clinical oncologists and anaesthetists, physicists and nursing staff. Within the evaluation group, 74.2% achieved a score >80%. Incorrect responses were principally related to questions regarding expected levels of responsibility and working practices, rather than the physics of high magnetic field strengths. The test-retest phase (n = 5) followed. Mean scores prior to learning were 59%, improving to 79% following learning, with the weakest sections mirroring those highlighted within the evaluation phase. DISCUSSION: Transferring MR safety training into an electronic format has provided a standardised, tangible tool that provides evidence of compliance with recommended guidance. CONCLUSIONS: This work illustrates the transition of MR safety learning for radiotherapy staff from passive presentation, to an interactive teaching methodology. The e-learning module has now been implemented within the department.
