RESUMO

High ammonia (NH3) and odor emission can occur after land application of liquid animal manure. This study was aimed at evaluating NH3 loss and odor nuisance after field application of cattle manure and how it is affected by two anaerobic digestion strategies: i) digestion of cattle manure alone and ii) digestion with catch crops and dilution by water. A system of dynamic chambers with online measurements of NH3 and odorous compounds (summarized as odor activity value, OAV) was used. Two experiments were conducted under different temperature conditions. The results demonstrated that anaerobic digestion did not affect NH3 loss but did decrease OAV. Addition of catch crops and water to the digestion process reduced both NH3 loss and OAV. Cool temperature in one of the experiments had a large effect on both NH3 and odor emissions, and at high temperature the differences between treatments increased.

RESUMO

Land spreading of liquid animal manure (slurry) is a major source of atmospheric emissions. Ammonia (NH3) emission is of concern, as it is one of the main contributors to ambient air pollution and nitrogen deposition. Storage and field acidification of the slurry prior to application is used to mitigate NH3 emission, but the effect of acidification on emissions of odorous non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) has not been investigated, and there is a scarcity of data investigating the effect of field acidification. Four field experiments, two with cattle slurry and two with pig slurry, were performed. Ammonia and NMVOC emissions were measured simultaneously in a system of dynamic chambers and online measurements by cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) and proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). The system allowed for a high time resolution and low variation. All four experiments were performed under cold conditions (<10°C average temperature). Storage and field acidification significantly lowered the NH3 emission by 79 ± 18% and 30 ± 6% on average, respectively. The NMVOC cumulative emission increased by 202 ± 133% and 17 ± 16% on average after storage and field acidification, respectively, even if the increase was only significant for storage acidification. Storage acidification significantly increased the emissions of odour at most measuring times. The increases of cumulative NMVOC emissions and odour was primarily caused by higher emissions of volatile fatty acids.

RESUMO

To assess solid-liquid separation as a technology to reduce ammonia (NH3) emission from storage and field application of animal slurry, it is necessary to consider a possible higher NH3 loss from the solid fraction after application than from raw slurry, as well as losses during storage. A literature review was conducted, and a case study was developed for Denmark, including cattle slurry, pig slurry, and biogas digestate applied by trailing hose, trailing shoe, or open slot injection at five different periods of the year. Standard storage emission factors were used and emission factors after field application were estimated using the ALFAM2 model with input data for dry matter (DM), pH, total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), and separation efficiency all from the literature compilation. In general, a clear reduction in the emission factors after application of the liquid fraction was found relative to application of raw slurry in the literature data. Case study results provide some evidence that separation of cattle slurry or digestate, followed by storage and subsequent application by trailing hose or trailing shoe of the liquid fraction and broadcast application of the solid fraction reduces overall NH3 loss, with a higher reduction when the solid fraction is incorporated by plowing after 4 h. This effect was not present for pig slurry. For all slurry types when the raw slurry and liquid fraction is applied by open slot injection, the overall reduction in emission due to separation is not present or even negative.

RESUMO

Soil surface measurements play an important role in the performance assessment of tillage operations and are relevant in both academic and industrial settings. Manual soil surface measurements are time-consuming and laborious, which often limits the amount of data collected. An experiment was conducted to compare two approaches for measuring and analysing the cross-sectional area and geometry of a furrow after a trailing shoe sweep. The compared approaches in this study were a manual pinboard and a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor. The experiments were conducted in coarse sand and loamy sand soil bins exposed to three levels of irrigation. Using the LiDAR, a system for generating 3D scans of the soil surface was obtained and a mean furrow geometry was introduced to study the geometrical variations along the furrows. A comparison of the cross-sectional area measurements by the pinboard and the LiDAR showed up to 41% difference between the two methods. The relation between irrigation and the resulting furrow area of a trailing shoe sweep was investigated using the LiDAR measurements. The furrow cross-sectional area increased by 11% and 34% under 20 mm and 40 mm irrigation compared to non-irrigated in the coarse sand experiment. In the loamy sand, the cross-sectional area increased by 17% and 15% by irrigation of 20 mm and 40 mm compared to non-irrigated measured using the LiDAR.

RESUMO

Combining aerobic and anaerobic digestion in a two-stage system can improve the degradation of wastewater sludge over the use of either technology alone. But use of aerobic digestion as a pre-treatment before anaerobic digestion generally reduces methane production due to loss of substrate through oxidation. An inter-stage configuration may avoid this reduction in methane production. Here, we evaluated the use of thermophilic aerobic digestion (TAD) as an inter-stage treatment for wastewater sludge using laboratory-scale semi-continuous reactors. A single anaerobic digester was compared to an inter-stage system, where a thermophilic aerobic digester (55 °C) was used between two mesophilic anaerobic digesters (37 °C). Both systems had retention times of approximately 30 days, and the comparison was based on measurements made over 97 days. Results showed that the inter-stage system provided better sludge destruction (52% volatile solids (VS) removal vs. 40% for the single-stage system, 44% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal vs. 34%) without a decrease in total biogas production (methane yield per g VS added was 0.22-0.24 L g-1 for both systems).

RESUMO

Patients with long-term health sequelae of COVID-19 (post-COVID-19 condition) experience both physical and cognitive manifestations. However, there is still uncertainty about the prevalence of physical impairment in these patients and whether there is a link between physical and cognitive function. The aim was to assess the prevalence of physical impairment and investigate the association with cognition in patients assessed in a post-COVID-19 clinic. In this cross-sectional study, patients referred to an outpatient clinic ≥ 3 months after acute infection underwent screening of their physical and cognitive function as part of a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment. Physical function was assessed with the 6-Minute Walk Test, the 30 s Sit-to-Stand Test and by measuring handgrip strength. Cognitive function was assessed with the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry and the Trail Making Test-Part B. Physical impairment was tested by comparing the patients' performance to normative and expected values. Association with cognition was investigated using correlation analyses and the possible explanatory variables regarding physical function were assessed using regression analyses. In total, we included 292 patients, the mean age was 52 (±15) years, 56% were women and 50% had been hospitalised during an acute COVID-19 infection. The prevalence of physical impairment ranged from 23% in functional exercise capacity to 59% in lower extremity muscle strength and function. There was no greater risk of physical impairment in previously hospitalised compared with the non-hospitalised patients. There was a weak to moderate association between physical and cognitive function. The cognitive test scores had statistically significant prediction value for all three outcomes of physical function. In conclusion, physical impairments were prevalent amongst patients assessed for post-COVID-19 condition regardless of their hospitalisation status and these were associated with more cognitive dysfunction.

RESUMO

Limited work to date has examined plastic ingestion in highly migratory seabirds like Great Shearwaters (Ardenna gravis) across the their entire migratory range, although this species is prone to ingest plastic as a wide-ranging procellariiform. We examined 217 Great Shearwaters obtained from 2008-2019 at multiple locations spanning their yearly migration cycle across the Northwest and South Atlantic to assess accumulation of ingested plastic as well as trends over time and between locations. A total of 2,328 plastic fragments were documented in the ventriculus portion of the gastrointestinal tract, with an average of 9 plastic fragments per bird. The mass, count, and frequency of plastic occurrence (FO) varied by location, with higher plastic burdens but lower FO in South Atlantic individuals from the breeding colonies. No fragments of the same size or morphology were found in the primary forage fish prey, the sand lance, (Ammodytes spp., n = 202) that supports Great Shearwaters in Massachusetts Bay, USA, suggesting the birds directly ingest the bulk of their plastic loads rather than accumulating via trophic transfer. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that low- and high-density polyethylene were the most common polymers ingested, within all years and locations. Individuals from the South Atlantic contained a higher proportion of larger plastic items and fragments compared to juveniles and non-breeding adults from the NW Atlantic, possibly due to increased use of remote, pelagic areas subject to reduced inputs of smaller, more diverse, and potentially less buoyant plastics found adjacent to coastal margins. Different signatures of polymer type, size, and category between similar life stages at different locations suggests rapid turnover of ingested plastics commensurate with migratory stage and location, though more empirical evidence is needed to ground-truth this hypothesis. This work is the first to comprehensively measure the accumulation of ingested plastics by Great Shearwaters over the last decade and across multiple locations spanning their yearly trans-equatorial migration cycle, and underscores their utility as sentinels of plastic pollution in Atlantic ecosystems.

RESUMO

Field application of liquid animal manure (slurry) is a significant source of ammonia (NH3) emission to the atmosphere. It is well supported by theory and previous studies that air temperature effects NH3 flux from field applied slurry. The objectives of this study was to statistically model the response of temperature at the time of application on cumulative NH3 emission. Data from 19 experiments measured with the same system of dynamic chambers and online measurements were included. A generalized additive model allowing to represent non-linear functional dependences of the emission on the temperature revealed that a positive response of the cumulative NH3 emission on the temperature at the time of application up to a temperature of approximately 14 °C. Above that, the temperature effect is insignificant. Average temperature over the measuring period was not found to carry any additional information on the cumulative NH3 emission. The lack of emission response on temperature above a certain point is assumed to be caused by drying out of the slurry and possible crust formation. This effect is hypothesized to create a physical barrier that reduce diffusion of NH3 to the soil surface, thereby lowering the emission rate. Furthermore, the effect of the interaction between soil type and application technique and the effect of dry matter content of the slurry was derived from the model, and found to be significant on cumulative NH3 emission predictions.

RESUMO

Field application of animal manure is a source of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emission that contribute to air pollution and odor nuisance in local surroundings. In this study the non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and H2S emission and odor activity dynamics over time after field application of pig and cattle manure were investigated. Furthermore, three different application techniques, trailing hoses, trailing shoes, and trailing hoses applying manure 20 cm above canopy, was compared. With a flexible system combining dynamic chambers and Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopy (PTR-TOF-MS), H2S and 22 different NMVOC were measured, identified, and quantified. From pig manure high amounts of H2S was measured right after application, resulting in high odor activity values (OAV). During the first 10 h 4-methylphenol accounted for most of the cumulative emissions and OAV. Carboxylic acids were emitted for a longer period, and accounted for most of the long-term emissions and OAV. Acetic acid alone accounted for 33-57% of the total cumulative emissions. Trailing shoes were found to reduce NMVOC emission under certain conditions. It is suggested to use updated ratios from this study to calculate NMVOC emissions relative to ammonia emissions. The average ratios of cumulated NMVOC emission divided by cumulated ammonia emission 90 h after application of pig manure is 1.15±0.55 and 0.72±0.26 for trailing hoses and trailing shoes respectively, whereas the equivalent numbers for cattle manure is 0.43±0.11 and 0.18±0.04.
