PURPOSE: Trochlear dysplasia is one of the most important pathomorphologies predisposing to patellofemoral instability. The development of the trochlea groove is not well understood so far. We hypothesized that the underlying pathology of trochlear dysplasia is a medial hypoplasia. METHODS: 110 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from adult knees, 55 with and 55 without trochlear dysplasia were analyzed. On the axial and sagittal T2 MRI sequences, the height (h), width (w) and depth (d) of the medial (MC) and lateral femoral condyle (LC) as well as the depth of the trochlea groove (dTG) were measured using a three-dimensional measuring algorithm. RESULTS: For all calculated values of the lateral femoral condyle, the comparison of both groups showed no significant difference (p = 0.95, p = 0.11, p = 0.07). The depth of the trochlear groove (dTG) showed significant lower values in the study group (p < 0.05). In the study group, all measurements of the medial femoral condyle were statistically significantly smaller compared to the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We found that the height, the width and the depth of the medial condyle is significant smaller in patients with trochlea dysplasia than in healthy controls. The measurements of the lateral femoral condyle showed no significant difference. Patients with a dysplastic trochlea have a hypoplastic medial femoral condyle and a more medially placed trochlea groove compared to controls.

Fluorescent natural compounds have been identified in several marine hosts of microalgae. Their prevalence, and the energy the host is expending on their synthesis, suggests an important, yet poorly understood ecological role. It has been suggested that some of these natural products may enhance the photosynthesis of microbial symbionts. In this study, the effect of Ageladine A (Ag A), a pH-dependent fluorophore found in sponges of the genus Agelas, on the photosynthesis of nine microalgal species and strains was examined. The data showed that the variety of effects of Ag A additions differed between species, and even strains within a species. While in one strain of Synechococcus sp., the presence of Ag A increased gross photosynthesis under UV light exposure, it decreased in another. And while in the chlorophyte T. chuii overall metabolic activity was greatly reduced under all forms of lighting, photosynthesis in T. lutea was positively affected by the addition of Ag A. The variety of effects of Ag A on photosynthesis observed in this study indicate a complex interaction of Ag A with microalgal cells and suggests that a host may be able to shape its own symbiotic microbiome with self-produced natural products.

In several marine hosts of microalgae, fluorescent natural products may play an important role. While the ecological function of these compounds is not well understood, an interaction of these molecules with the photosynthesis of the symbionts has been suggested. In this study, the effect of Ageladine A (Ag A), a pH-dependent fluorophore found in sponges of the genus Agelas, on microalgal fluorescence was examined. The spectra showed an accumulation of Ag A within the cells, but with variable impacts on fluorescence. While in two Synechococcus strains, fluorescence of phycoerythrin increased significantly, the fluorescence of other Synechococcus strains was not affected. In four out of the five eukaryote species examined, chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence intensity was modulated. In Tisochrysis lutea, for example, the position of the fluorescence emission maximum of Chl a was shifted. The variety of these effects of Ag A on microalgal fluorescence suggests that fluorophores derived from animals could play a crucial role in shaping the composition of marine host/symbiont systems.

The marine dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra is a toxigenic species capable of forming high magnitude and occasionally harmful algal blooms (HABs), particularly in temperate coastal waters throughout the world. Three cultured isolates of L. polyedra from a fjord system on the Skagerrak coast of Sweden were analyzed for their growth characteristics and to determine the effects of a strong salinity gradient on toxin cell quotas and composition. The cell quota of yessotoxin (YTX) analogs, as determined by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), ranged widely among strains. For two strains, the total toxin content remained constant over time in culture, but for the third strain, the YTX cell quota significantly decreased (by 32%) during stationary growth phase. The toxin profiles of the three strains differed markedly and none produced YTX. The analog 41a-homo-YTX (m/z 1155), its putative methylated derivative 9-Me-41a-homo-YTX (m/z 1169) and an unspecified keto-YTX (m/z 1047) were detected in strain LP29-10H, whereas strain LP30-7B contained nor-YTX (m/z 1101), and two unspecified YTX analogs at m/z 1159 and m/z 1061. The toxin profile of strain LP30-8D comprised two unspecified YTX analogs at m/z 1061 and m/z 991 and carboxy-YTX (m/z 1173). Strain LP30-7B cultured at multiple salinities (10, 16, 22, 28 and 34) did not tolerate the lowest salinity (10), but there was a statistically significant decrease (by 21%) in toxin cell quota between growth at the highest versus lower permissible salinities. The toxin profile for strain LP30-7B remained constant over time for a given salinity. At lower salinities, however, the proportion of the unspecified YTX analog (m/z 1061) was significantly higher, especially with respect to nor-YTX (m/z 1101). This study shows high intra-specific variability in yessotoxin composition among strains from the same geographical region and inconsistency in toxin cell quota under different environmental regimes and growth stages in culture. This variation has important implications for the kinetics of YTX production and food web transfer in natural bloom populations from diverse geographical regions.

Clay brick manufacturing is a sector which involves a lot of firing processes requiring higher temperature. To maintain this temperature, large amount of fuel in the form of wood, coal, biomass etc. need to be burnt in the kiln causing serious issues of air pollution. Also, with the increase in the number of industries coming up, large amount of un-disposable waste gets accumulated. If suitable remedies are not adopted for its safe disposal, it may pollute the water bodies through runoff. This project is an effort to reduce the brick firing temperature in the kiln to about 600 °C thereby reducing the cost of production and making the whole process environmental friendly. This work will put forward a suitable alternative for the safe disposal of industrial debris like quarry dust and glass powder by incorporating them as a partial substitute for river sand which is one of the costly constituent of clay brick and thereby further reducing the cost of production. Experimental results showed higher compressive strength of 21.31 N/mm2when the brick was casted with mix proportion of Cement: Sand: Red earth: Glass Powder: Quarry Dust = 4:1:1:1.5:2.5. The strength measured at temperature 600 °C met the requirements of the National Standards.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Collateral status is an important factor determining outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Hence, different collateral scoring systems have been introduced. We applied different scoring systems on single- and multi-phase computed tomography (CT) angiography (spCTA and mpCTA) and compared them to CT perfusion (CTP) parameters to identify the best method for collateral evaluation in patients with AIS. METHODS: A total of 102 patients with AIS due to large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation who underwent multimodal CT imaging and who were treated endovascularly were included. Collateral status was assessed on spCTA and mpCTA using four different scoring systems and compared to CTP parameters. Logistic regression was performed for predicting favorable outcome. RESULTS: All collateral scores correlated well with each other and with CTP parameters. Comparison of collateral scores stratified by extent of perfusion deficit showed relevant differences between groups (P<0.01 for each). An spCTA collateral score discriminated best between favorable and unfavorable outcome as determined using the modified Rankin Scale 3 months after stroke. CONCLUSION: s Collateral status evaluated on spCTA may suffice for outcome prediction and decision making in AIS patients, potentially obviating further imaging modalities like mpCTA or CTP.

BACKGROUND: Cementless hip prostheses with different offsets are frequently used to restore the rotation center of the hip. However, a rising offset is theoretically associated with a potential risk for increased interface stresses and early loosening. METHODS: To assess this potential risk for cementless stems, the primary stability of the CLS Spotorno stem was examined with respect to three different femoral neck versions (125°, 135° and 145°) measuring 3-dimensional micromotions. For this purpose 18 stems were implanted in composite femurs and tested dynamically using physiological loading conditions considering the necessary adaptation according to the different offsets. Additionally the deformations at the surface of the composite femur were recorded to draw conclusions about the tendency for stress shielding. FINDINGS: The micromotions of the different offset versions were not significantly different. The highest values were obtained at the tip of the stems, even exceeding the critical limit for osseous integration of 150µm. Compared to untreated composite femurs the alteration of the deformations at the surface remained relatively low. A significant difference was only observed in the ventral measurement points. INTERPRETATION: According to the measured micromotions no offset version of the CLS Spotorno can be declared as superior. The assumption that the varus version is characterized by extended interface stresses could not be confirmed. Furthermore, it could be demonstrated that according to the principle of proximal load transfer of the CLS Spotorno stem an osseous integration of the distal part cannot be expected and that the risk for stress shielding appears to be relatively low.
