RESUMO

Cobaloximes are promising, earth-abundant catalysts for the light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Typically, these cobalt(III) complexes are prepared in situ or employed in their neutral form, for example, [Co(dmgH)2 (py)Cl], even though related complex salts have been reported previously and could, in principle, offer improved catalytic activity as well as more efficient immobilization on solid support. Herein, we report an interdisciplinary investigation into complex salts [Co(dmgH)2 (py)2 ]+ [Co(dmgBPh2 )2 Cl2 ]- , TBA + [ Co ( dmgBPh 2 ) 2 Cl 2 ] - and [Co(dmgH)2 (py)2 ]+ BArF- . We describe their strategic syntheses from the commercially available complex [Co(dmgH)2 (py)Cl] and demonstrate that these double and single complex salts are potent catalysts for the light-driven HER. We also show that scanning electrochemical cell microscopy can be used to deposit arrays of catalysts [Co(dmgH)2 (py)2 ]+ [Co(dmgBPh2 )2 Cl2 ]- , TBA + [ Co ( dmgBPh 2 ) 2 Cl 2 ] - and [Co(dmgH)2 (py)Cl] on supported and free-standing amino-terminated ∼1-nm-thick carbon nanomembranes (CNMs). Photocatalytic H2 evolution at such arrays was quantified with Pd microsensors by scanning electrochemical microscopy, thus providing a new approach for catalytic evaluation and opening up novel routes for the creation and analysis of "designer catalyst arrays", nanoprinted in a desired pattern on a solid support.

RESUMO

The problematic consequences of using silver carbene precursors for the synthesis of NHC-complexes is elucidated with the example of dinuclear Ru-Rh/Ir photocatalysts. The presence of silver in the products is proven and an alternative silver-free synthetic approach successfully implemented. A significant difference in performance in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions of catalysts generated by the different strategies is observed.

RESUMO

Detailed investigations of a photocatalytic system capable of producing hydrogen under pre-catalytic aerobic conditions are reported. This system consists of the NHC precursor chromophore [Ru(tbbpy)2 (RR'ip)][PF6 ]3 (abbreviated as Ru(RR'ip)[PF6 ]3 ; tbbpy=4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, RR'ip=1,3-disubstituted-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolinium), the reduction catalyst Co(dmgH)2 (dmgH=dimethylglyoximato), and the electron donor ascorbic acid (AA). Screening studies with respect to solvent, cobaloxime catalyst, electron donor, pH, and concentrations of the individual components yielded optimized photocatalytic conditions. The system shows high activity based on Ru, with turnover numbers up to 2000 under oxygen-free and pre-catalytic aerobic conditions. The turnover frequency in the latter case was even higher than that for the oxygen-free catalyst system. The Ru complexes show high photostability and their first excited state is primarily located on the RR'ip ligand. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the rigid cyclophane-type ligand dd(ip)2 (Br)2 (dd(ip)2 =1,1',3,3'-bis(2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)bis(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolinium)) and the catalytic activity of its Ru complex [{(tbbpy)2 Ru}2 (µ-dd(ip)2 )][PF6 ]6 (abbreviated as Ru2 (dd(ip)2 )[PF6 ]6 ) suggest an intermolecular catalytic cycle.

RESUMO

The molecular apparatus behind biological photosynthesis retains its long-term functionality through enzymatic repair. However, bioinspired molecular devices designed for artificial photosynthesis, consisting of a photocentre, a bridging ligand and a catalytic centre, can become unstable and break down when their individual modules are structurally compromised, halting their overall functionality and operation. Here we report the active repair of such an artificial photosynthetic molecular device, leading to complete recovery of catalytic activity. We have identified the hydrogenation of the bridging ligand, which inhibits the light-driven electron transfer between the photocentre and catalytic centre, as the deactivation mechanism. As a means of repair, we used the light-driven generation of singlet oxygen, catalysed by the photocentre, to enable the oxidative dehydrogenation of the bridging unit, which leads to the restoration of photocatalytic hydrogen formation.

RESUMO

Novel photocatalysts based on ruthenium complexes with NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene)-type bridging ligands have been prepared and structurally and photophysically characterised. The identity of the NHC-unit of the bridging ligand was established unambiguously by means of X-ray structural analysis of a heterodinuclear ruthenium-silver complex. The photophysical data indicate ultrafast intersystem crossing into an emissive and a non-emissive triplet excited state after excitation of the ruthenium centre. Exceptionally high luminescence quantum yields of up to 39% and long lifetimes of up to 2 µs are some of the triplet excited state characteristics. Preliminary studies into the visible light driven photocatalytic hydrogen formation show no induction phase and constant turnover frequencies that are independent on the concentration of the photocatalyst. In conclusion this supports the notion of a stable assembly under photocatalytic conditions.
