RESUMO

Recently, nonvolatile resistive switching memory effects have been actively studied in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides and boron nitrides to advance future memory and neuromorphic computing applications. Here, we report on radiofrequency (RF) switches utilizing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) memristors that afford operation in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) range. Notably, silver (Ag) electrodes to h-BN offer outstanding nonvolatile bipolar resistive switching characteristics with a high ON/OFF switching ratio of 1011 and low switching voltage below 0.34 V. In addition, the switch exhibits a low insertion loss of 0.50 dB and high isolation of 23 dB across the D-band spectrum (110 to 170 GHz). Furthermore, the S21 insertion loss can be tuned through five orders of current compliance magnitude, which increases the application prospects for atomic switches. These results can enable the switch to become a key component for future reconfigurable wireless and 6G communication systems.

The two-electron oxidative addition of aryl and alkyl halides to a reduced iron dinitrogen complex with a strong-field tridentate pincer ligand has been demonstrated. Addition of iodobenzene or bromobenzene to (3,5-Me2MesCNC)Fe(N2)2 (3,5-Me2MesCNC = 2,6-(2,4,6-Me-C6H2-imidazol-2-ylidene)2-3,5-Me2-pyridine) resulted in rapid oxidative addition and formation of the diamagnetic, octahedral Fe(II) products (3,5-Me2MesCNC)Fe(Ph)(N2)(X), where X = I or Br. Competition experiments established the relative rate of oxidative addition of aryl halides as I > Br > Cl. A linear free energy of relative reaction rates of electronically differentiated aryl bromides (ρ = 1.5) was consistent with a concerted-type pathway. The oxidative addition of alkyl halides such as methyl-, isobutyl-, or neopentyl halides was also rapid at room temperature, but substrates with more accessible ß-hydrogen positions (e.g., 1-bromobutane) underwent subsequent ß-hydride elimination. Cyclization of an alkyl halide containing a radical clock and epimerization of neohexyl iodide-d2 upon oxidative addition to (3,5-Me2MesCNC)Fe(N2)2 are consistent with radical intermediates during C(sp3)-X bond cleavage. Importantly, while C(sp2)-X and C(sp3)-X oxidative addition produces net two-electron chemistry, the preferred pathway for obtaining the products is concerted and stepwise, respectively.

In this study, we analyzed 313 plastid genomes (plastomes) of Poaceae with a focus on expanding our current knowledge of relationships among the subfamily Pooideae, which represented over half the dataset (164 representatives). In total, 47 plastomes were sequenced and assembled for this study. This is the largest study of its kind to include plastome-level data, to not only increase sampling at both the taxonomic and molecular levels with the aim of resolving complex and reticulate relationships, but also to analyze the effects of alignment gaps in large-scale analyses, as well as explore divergences in the subfamily with an expanded set of 14 accepted grass fossils for more accurate calibrations and dating. Incorporating broad systematic assessments of Pooideae taxa conducted by authors within the last five years, we produced a robust phylogenomic reconstruction for the subfamily, which included all but two supergeneric taxa (Calothecinae and Duthieeae). We further explored how including alignment gaps in plastome analyses oftentimes can produce incorrect or misinterpretations of complex or reticulate relationships among taxa of Pooideae. This presented itself as consistently changing relationships at specific nodes for different stripping thresholds (percentage-based removal of gaps per alignment column). Our summary recommendation for large-scale genomic plastome datasets is to strip alignment columns of all gaps to increase pairwise identity and reduce errant signal from poly A/T bias. To do this we used the "mask alignment" tool in Geneious software. Finally, we determined an overall divergence age for Pooideae of roughly 84.8 Mya, which is in line with, but slightly older than most recent estimates.

Calluna vulgaris (heather) is an aggressive invasive weed on the Central Plateau, North Is., New Zealand (NZ), where it encounters different environmental factors compared to its native range in Europe, such as high ultraviolet radiation (UV) and a lack of specialist herbivores. The specialist herbivore Lochmaea suturalis (heather beetle) was introduced from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1996 as a biocontrol agent to manage this invasive weed. Like other plant invaders, a novel environment may be challenging for heather as it adjusts to its new conditions. This process of "adjustment" involves morphological and physiological changes often linked to phenotypic plasticity. The biochemical responses of exotic plants to environmental variables in their invaded range is poorly understood. The production and release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential to plant communication and highly susceptible to environmental change. This study therefore aimed to explore the VOC emissions of heather in response to different levels of UV exposure, and to feeding damage by L. suturalis. Using tunnel houses clad with UV-selective filters, we measured VOCs produced by heather under NZ ambient, 20% attenuated, and 95% attenuated solar UV treatments. We also compared VOC emissions in the field at adjacent sites where L. suturalis was present or absent. Volatiles produced by the same target heather plants were measured at four different times in the spring and summer of 2018-2019, reflecting variations in beetle's abundance, feeding stage and plant phenology. Heather plants under 95% attenuated UV produced significantly higher amounts of (E)-ß-farnesene, decanal, benzaldehyde, and benzeneacetaldehyde compared to 25% attenuated and ambient UV radiation. We also found significant differences in volatiles produced by heather plants in beetle-present versus beetle-absent sites on most sampling occasions. We also recorded a lower number of generalist herbivores on heather at sites where L. suturalis was present. Interactions between invasive plants, a novel environment, and the native communities they invade, are discussed.

Oxoiron(IV) motifs are found in important intermediates in many enzymatic cycles that involve oxidations. Over half of the reported synthetic nonheme oxoiron(IV) analogs incorporate heterocyclic donors, with a majority of them comprising pyridines. Herein, we report 1H-NMR studies of oxoiron(IV) complexes containing pyridines that are arranged in different configurations relative to the Fe = O unit and give rise to paramagnetically shifted resonances that differ by as much as 50 ppm. The strong dependence of 1H-NMR shifts on the different configurations and orientation of pyridines relative to the oxoiron(IV) unit demonstrates how unpaired electronic spin density of the iron center affects the chemical shifts of these protons.

OBJECTIVE: Inhibiting the proliferation of skin bacteria, using nitric oxide (NO), is a potential strategy to prevent infections. This study evaluated the efficacy of using a new NO releasing film dressing to decrease resident human bacterial skin flora compared with the measured microbial activity underneath control sterile Tegaderm transparent dressings. METHODS: A within-subjects design using a sample of convenience compared the bacterial counts under the skin of experimental dressings to those under control dressings. NO releasing film dressings (three) and control dressings (three) were applied without antiseptic preparation to the intact skin on the backs of 67 healthy volunteers. Subsequent skin cultures were obtained from underneath dressing pairs (one experimental and one control) on days three, five, and seven after application. Baseline microflora bacterial counts from uncovered skin was obtained on day three of the study. Comparisons of bacterial counts were analysed. RESULTS: On days three, five and seven, the experimental NO releasing film dressings demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in bacterial count compared with the control dressings. CONCLUSION: The NO releasing film dressings resulted in significantly lower bacterial colony counts as compared to the control dressings at all time points. Incorporating a NO compound into a dressing has an antibacterial effect lasting a minimum of seven days.

Phytophthora nicotianae and Ralstonia solanacearum are two of the most important pathogens affecting tobacco worldwide. Greater insight regarding genetic systems controlling resistance to these two soilborne pathogens, as well as identification of DNA markers associated with genomic regions controlling this resistance, could aid in variety development. An evaluation of 50 historical tobacco lines revealed a high positive correlation between resistances to the two pathogens, preliminarily suggesting that some genomic regions may confer resistance to both pathogens. A quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping experiment designed to investigate the genetic control of soilborne disease resistance of highly resistant 'K346' tobacco identified four QTL significantly associated with resistance to P. nicotianae (explaining 60.0% of the observed phenotypic variation) and three QTL to be associated with R. solanacearum resistance (explaining 50.3% of the observed variation). The two QTL with the largest effect on Phytophthora resistance were also found to be the QTL with the greatest effects on resistance to Ralstonia. This finding partially explains previously observed associations between resistances to these two pathogens among U.S. current cultivars and within breeding populations. Further study is needed to determine whether these relationships are due to the same genes (i.e., pleiotropy) or favorable coupling-phase linkages that have been established over time.

This year marks a full century since the founding of the journal Plant Disease. The story of how the journal developed, from its origins as a service publication of the USDA in 1917 to the leading applied journal in the field today, reflects on major historical themes in plant pathology. Central to this narrative is the delicate balancing act in plant pathology between fundamental and applied science. During the 1960s and 1970s, substantial numbers of plant pathologists in the U.S. expressed concerns through the American Phytopathological Society (APS) over what they viewed as an alarming and increasing scarcity of applied papers in the flagship journal, Phytopathology. These concerns led increasingly to calls for a second APS journal devoted to applied research. After a period of uncertainty and indecision, the dissolution of the USDA Plant Disease Reporter (PDR) in 1979 offered APS leadership an unusual opportunity to assume publication of a journal with a 63-year legacy of publishing practical plant pathology. In a bold move, APS Council, with the decision in 1979 to take on the publication of PDR under the new title, Plant Disease, provided plant pathologists and the larger agricultural science community with an innovative vehicle to communicate applied plant pathology.

Generally, the long-range electronic communication between spatially orthogonal orbitals is inefficient and limited to field and inductive effects. In this work, we provide experimental evidence that such communication can be achieved via intramolecular electron transfer between two degenerate and mutually orthogonal frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) at the transition state. Interaction between orthogonal orbitals is amplified when the energy gap between these orbitals approaches zero, or at an "orbital crossing". The crossing between two empty or two fully occupied MOs, which do not lead to stabilization, can be "activated" when one of the empty MOs is populated (i.e., electron injection) or one of the filled MOs is depopulated (i.e., hole injection). In reductive cycloaromatization reactions, such crossings define transition states with energies defined by both the in-plane and out-of-plane π-systems. Herein, we provide experimental evidence for the utility of this concept using orbital crossings in reductive C1-C5 cycloaromatization reactions of enediynes. Communication with remote substituents via orbital crossings greatly enhances regioselectivity of the ring closure step in comparison to the analogous radical cyclizations. We also present photophysical data pertaining to the efficiency of electron injection into the benzannelated enediynes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Interactions between species are especially sensitive to environmental changes. The interaction between plants and pollinators is of particular interest given the potential current global decline in pollinators. Reduced pollinator services can be compensated for in some plant species by self-pollination. However, if inbreeding depression is high, selfed progeny could die prior to reaching adulthood, leading to cryptic recruitment failure. METHODS: To examine this scenario, pollinator abundance, pollen limitation, selfing rates and inbreeding depression were examined in 12 populations of varying disturbance levels in Sophora microphylla (Fabaceae), an endemic New Zealand tree species. KEY RESULTS: High pollen limitation was found in all populations (average of 58 % reduction in seed production, nine populations), together with high selfing rates (61 % of offspring selfed, six populations) and high inbreeding depression (selfed offspring 86 % less fit, six populations). Pollen limitation was associated with lower visitation rates by the two endemic bird pollinators. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that for these populations, over half of the seeds produced are genetically doomed. This reduction in the fitness of progeny due to reduced pollinator service is probably important to population dynamics of other New Zealand species. More broadly, the results suggest that measures of seed production or seedling densities may be a gross overestimate of the effective offspring production. This could lead to cryptic recruitment failure, i.e. a decline in successful reproduction despite high progeny production. Given the global extent of pollinator declines, cryptic recruitment failure may be widespread.

First metatarsal cuneiform joint arthrodesis has been commonly used since the early 1900s for definitive treatment of a variety of conditions involving the medial column of the foot. Early applications of this procedure resulted in a relatively high rate of complications, including malunion and nonunion. We retrospectively examined a novel method of fixation involving an endosseous implant with a nonporous, rough exterior surface and compared it with the traditional crossed screw fixation, considered the standard of care for the procedure. Twenty-one feet in 19 patients served as the control group with crossed screws, and 18 feet in 17 patients served as the trial group using the study device. Null hypothesis testing was used to compare the outcomes parameters between the comparative groups. Postoperatively, the patients were allowed to walk in a prefabricated, removable, below-the-knee cast boot at a mean of 48.3 ± 8.2 days in the control group and 24.4 ± 9.7 days in the trial group. These differences were highly significant (p < .0001). Postoperatively, the patients were allowed to walk in a stiff-soled shoe at a mean of 65.2 ± 8.4 days in the control group and 49.7 ± 19.2 days in the trial group. These differences were also statistically significant (p = .0020). The patients in the control group required revision surgery in 7 of 21 procedures (33%), with 2 patients developing nonunion (9.5%). Only 1 patient in the trial group required revision surgery (5.8%), and no patient developed nonunion. From these results, we believe that the endosseous trial implant is a reliable option for fixation of the first metatarsal cuneiform arthrodesis procedure and might allow for earlier weightbearing with fewer postoperative complications.

Genetic interchange between American and Eurasian species is fundamental to our understanding of the biogeographical patterns, and we make a first attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary events in East Asia that lead to the origin and dispersal of two genera, Patis and Ptilagrostis. We conducted a molecular phylogenetic study of 78 species in the tribe Stipeae using four plastid DNA sequences (ndhF, rpl32-trnL, rps16-trnK, and rps16 intron) and two nuclear DNA sequences (ITS and At103). We use single copy nDNA gene At103 for the first time in the grasses to elucidate the evolutionary history among members of the Stipeae. Ampelodesmos, Hesperostipa, Oryzopsis, Pappostipa, Patis, and Stipa are found to be of multiple origins. Our phylograms reveal conflicting positions for Ptilagrostis alpina and Pt. porteri that form a clade with Patis coreana, P. obtusa, and P. racemosa in the combined plastid tree but are aligned with other members of Ptilagrostis in the ITS tree. We hypothesize that Ptilagrostis still retains the nucleotype of an extinct genus which transited the Bering land bridge from American origins in the late Miocene (minimum 7.35-6.37 mya) followed by hybridization and two plastid capture events with a Trikeraia-like taxon (7.96 mya) and para-Patis (between 5.32 and 3.76 mya). Ptilagrostis porteri and Patis racemosa then migrated to continental North America 1.7-2.9 mya and 4.3-5.3 mya, respectively.

We prepared eleven amino-acid functionalized baskets and used (1) H NMR spectroscopy to quantify their affinity for entrapping dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP, 118 Å(3) ) in aqueous phosphate buffer at pH=7.0±0.1; note that DMMP guest is akin in size to chemical nerve agent sarin (132 Å(3) ). The binding interaction (Ka ) was found to vary with the size of substituent groups at the basket's rim. In particular, the degree of branching at the first carbon of each substituent had the greatest effect on the host-guest interaction, as described with the Verloop's B1 steric parameter. The branching at the remote carbons, however, did not perturb the encapsulation, which is important for guiding the design of more effective hosts and catalysts in future.

A taxonomic treatment of 38 species of Muhlenbergia, a phylogeny based on analysis of six DNA sequence markers, and classification of Muhlenbergia for Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama; and Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatán, México) is given. With the support from a molecular phylogeny we describe Muhlenbergiasubg.Ramulosaesubgen. nov. In our treatment we place M.gigantea (younger name) as a synonym of M.mutica. Catalysts that distinguish between electronically distinct carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds without relying on steric effects or directing groups are challenging to design. In this work, cobalt precatalysts supported by N-alkyl-imidazole-substituted pyridine dicarbene (ACNC) pincer ligands are described that enable undirected, remote borylation of fluoroaromatics and expansion of scope to include electron-rich arenes, pyridines, and tri- and difluoromethoxylated arenes, thereby addressing one of the major limitations of first-row transition metal C-H functionalization catalysts. Mechanistic studies established a kinetic preference for C-H bond activation at the meta-position despite cobalt-aryl complexes resulting from ortho C-H activation being thermodynamically preferred. Switchable site selectivity in C-H borylation as a function of the boron reagent was thereby preliminarily demonstrated using a single precatalyst.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leptochloa (including Diplachne) sensu lato (s.l.) comprises a diverse assemblage of C(4) (NAD-ME and PCK) grasses with approx. 32 annual or perennial species. Evolutionary relationships and a modern classification of Leptochloa spp. based on the study of molecular characters have only been superficially investigated in four species. The goals of this study were to reconstruct the evolutionary history of Leptochloa s.l. with molecular data and broad taxon sampling. METHODS: A phylogenetic analysis was conducted of 130 species (mostly Chloridoideae), of which 22 are placed in Leptochloa, using five plastid (rpL32-trn-L, ndhA intron, rps16 intron, rps16-trnK and ccsA) and the nuclear ITS 1 and 2 (ribosomal internal transcribed spacer regions) to infer evolutionary relationships and revise the classification. KEY RESULTS: Leptochloa s.l. is polyphyletic and strong support was found for five lineages. Embedded within the Leptochloa sensu stricto (s.s.) clade are two Trichloris spp. and embedded in Dinebra are Drake-brockmania and 19 Leptochloa spp. CONCLUSIONS: The molecular results support the dissolution of Leptochloa s.l. into the following five genera: Dinebra with 23 species, Diplachne with two species, Disakisperma with three species, Leptochloa s.s. with five species and a new genus, Trigonochloa, with two species.

To investigate the evolutionary relationships among species of the tribe Triraphideae (including two monotypic genera, Habrochloa and Nematopoa), we generated a phylogeny based on DNA sequences from nuclear ribosomal (ITS) and four plastid markers (rps16-trnK, rps16 intron, rpl32-trnL, and ndhA intron). Habrochloa and Nematopoa form a clade that is sister to Neyraudia and Triraphis. Member of the Triraphideae have paniculate inflorescences, 3-veined, marginally ciliate lemmas, usually with hairy lateral veins, that are apically bifid and awned from between a sinus. A description of the Triraphideae and key to the genera is provided, and the biogeography is discussed, likely originating in Africa.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Eleusine (Poaceae) is a small genus of the subfamily Chloridoideae exhibiting considerable morphological and ecological diversity in East Africa and the Americas. The interspecific phylogenetic relationships of Eleusine are investigated in order to identify its allotetraploid origin, and a chronogram is estimated to infer temporal relationships between palaeoenvironment changes and divergence of Eleusine in East Africa. METHODS: Two low-copy nuclear (LCN) markers, Pepc4 and EF-1α, were analysed using parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian approaches. A chronogram of Eleusine was inferred from a combined data set of six plastid DNA markers (ndhA intron, ndhF, rps16-trnK, rps16 intron, rps3, and rpl32-trnL) using the Bayesian dating method. KEY RESULTS: The monophyly of Eleusine is strongly supported by sequence data from two LCN markers. In the cpDNA phylogeny, three tetraploid species (E. africana, E. coracana and E. kigeziensis) share a common ancestor with the E. indica-E. tristachya clade, which is considered a source of maternal parents for allotetraploids. Two homoeologous loci are isolated from three tetraploid species in the Pepc4 phylogeny, and the maternal parents receive further support. The A-type EF-1α sequences possess three characters, i.e. a large number of variations of intron 2; clade E-A distantly diverged from clade E-B and other diploid species; and seven deletions in intron 2, implying a possible derivation through a gene duplication event. The crown age of Eleusine and the allotetraploid lineage are 3·89 million years ago (mya) and 1·40 mya, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The molecular data support independent allotetraploid origins for E. kigeziensis and the E. africana-E. coracana clade. Both events may have involved diploids E. indica and E. tristachya as the maternal parents, but the paternal parents remain unidentified. The habitat-specific hypothesis is proposed to explain the divergence of Eleusine and its allotetraploid lineage.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by plants are essential indicators of their physiological response to environmental conditions. But evidence of natural variation in VOC emissions and their contributing factors is still limited, especially for non-cultivated species. Here we explored the natural volatile emissions of Dracophyllum subulatum Hook.f., an endemic shrub to the North Island Central Plateau of New Zealand, and determined some environmental factors driving the plant's emissions. Volatile emissions of D. subulatum were measured on four separate occasions from December 2017 to September 2018 using the "push-pull" headspace sampling technique and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). D. subulatum was classified based on the volatiles measured on each sampling occasion using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). On each sampling occasion, we also recorded and compared ambient air temperature, herbivory damage, total soil nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and soil moisture content. The relationship between environmental variables that differed significantly between sampling occasions and volatile emissions were estimated using generalized linear models (GLMs). Based on VOCs measured on each sampling occasion, we were able to distinguish different chemical profiles. Overall, we found that total emission and the relative proportions of all major chemical classes released by D. subulatum were significantly higher during summer. The GLMs reveal that differences in environmental factors between the four sampling occasions are highly associated with changing emissions. Higher temperatures in summer had a consistently strong positive relationship with emissions, while the impacts of soil moisture content, P and K were variable and depended on the chemical class. These results are discussed, particularly how high temperature (warming) may shape volatile emissions and plants' ecology.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to introduce a virtual radiology rotation curriculum that is being used to safely maintain medical student and intern education and engagement with the Department of Radiology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mitigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The curriculum is designed as a 4-week block with each week representing one of the four highest yield radiology subspecialties for medical students; neuroradiology, thoracic radiology, body radiology, and musculoskeletal radiology. A subspecialist radiologist from each section was identified as a primary mentor and tasked with designing a daily schedule for medical students and interns. The first 2 months of virtual rotators were surveyed to assess the effectiveness of the course. RESULTS: Thirty-five of 41 rotators responded to the survey, a response rate of 85%. Thirty-one of 35 (89%) of the rotators gave this virtual elective rotation a positive rating, with 16 trainees scoring the course as 4 out of 5 and 15 trainees selecting 5 out of 5. Four respondents selected 3 out of 5. Five out of 5 respondents who had experienced an in-person radiology elective rotation before this virtual rotation rated the virtual elective as more educational than the in-person rotation. We found the 4-week subspecialist mentor-based structure to be highly versatile, allowing us to simultaneously accommodate multiple groups of full or partial block rotators throughout COVID-19 mitigation. CONCLUSION: A virtual rotation curriculum is a viable method of maintaining medical student and intern education and engagement with the department of radiology during COVID-19 mitigation.
