BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) compromise individuals' nutritional status, affecting, among other organs and systems, bone health. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess and compare bone mineral density (BMD) from DXA scan and deuterium (D2O) dilution of adult females with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with 53 female participants (18-49 y) with a diagnosis of AN (n = 25) or BN (n = 28). DXA scan was performed to assess BMD, FM, and FFM, and D2O dilution was used to assess total body water (TBW), FM, and FFM. Interviews/questionnaires were used to assess symptoms, illness trajectory, and physical activity. t-test, chi-square test, Pearson's linear correlation, linear regressions, and Bland-Altman analyses were performed, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: TBW below the recommended level for adult females (≥ 45%) was more frequent in BN (60%) compared with AN (21%; P = 0.013). FM index (FMI) (soft tissue only) (t-test P = 0.06), and FFM index (FFMI) (t-test P = 0.08) agreed between DXA scan and D2O dilution. Only FFMI did not show systematic bias of proportion (ß: -0.2, P = 0.177). The diagnosis of BN, binge-eating episodes, and physical activity in AN were associated with the differences in the methods' results. FMI was positively associated with BMD in AN, and both FMI and FFMI were positively associated with BMD in BN. CONCLUSIONS: In adult females with EDs, DXA scan and D2O dilution achieved agreement for FMI and FFMI. Changes in FM and FFM are important in understanding the mechanisms behind bone loss in EDs. Protocols for body composition assessment in EDs can help to minimize the effect of the ED diagnosis, ED behaviors (that is, excessive exercise and purging behaviors), and weight on the accuracy of measurements.

OBJECTIVE: This report aimed to describe the results of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) assessed by doubly labeled water (DLW TDEE) and the adequacy of the dietary reference intakes (DRI) equations to estimate energy requirements (DRI ER). METHODS: A cross-sectional and observational study in a convenience sample of 40 healthy Brazilian adults (≥20 years; 21 women) living in a tropical urban region. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was measured by indirect calorimetry, DLW TDEE was compared with DRI ER using individual calculated physical activity level (PAL = DLW TDEE/BMR) in its estimation. RESULTS: BMR (5043 ± 548 kJ/day in women and 6213 ± 656 kJ/day in men), DLW TDEE (8372 ± 1324 kJ/day and 11 453 ± 1834 kJ/day), and PAL (1.66 ± 0.17 and 1.85 ± 0.30, respectively) were significantly higher in men. The DRI ER significantly overestimated DLW TDEE by 13.7 ± 8.3% and 12.7 ± 10.7% in women and men, respectively. CONCLUSION: In the present sample of relatively active urban Brazilian subjects, the DRI ER yielded inaccurate estimation of DLW TDEE. More data from low- and moderate-income countries are necessary to develop accurate estimates of TDEE.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe how strong is the relationship between TEE and PAL in women living in an impoverished Brazilian urban area. METHODS: Anthropometric, hormonal (insulin, TSH, FT4 , and FT3 ), body composition (deuterium), TEE (doubly labeled water) and PAL (metabolic equivalent task [MET]-7-day triaxial accelerometer, ActivPAL®) data were collected from 55 women (mean age: 31y, mean BMI: 27.4 kg/m2 ). Adjusted-TEE models were calculated incorporating the residuals of anthropometric, hormonal, and body composition variables in the TEE, to assess the relation between MET and adjusted-TEE, through three different analyzes: linear regression, nonlinear regression and change-point regression. RESULTS: Most participants (89.1%, n = 49) were classified as low-active. There was no association between crude TEE and MET.h/d (R2  = 0.05; p = 0.09). There was a positive, although weak, linear relationship between adjusted-TEE and MET.h/d (ß = 2705.26 kcal; 95% CI: 436.25; 4974.27; adj-R2  = 0.08). A change point of this relationship was identified in the MET.h/d value of 1.53 (SD = 0.02; adj-R2 = 0.13). The association between adjusted-TEE and MET.h/d before the change point (ß = 5101.46 kcal; 95%CI: 978.84; 9224.08; adj-R2  = 0.11) was stronger than the association in the full linear model, nevertheless, it was still weak. This association stop existing when it is assessed in individuals after the change point (ß = -6609.92 kcal; 95%CI: -16773.24; 3553.40; adj-R2  = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the relationship between TEE and PAL is weak and it is not completely linear in women living in an impoverished Brazilian urban area.

BACKGROUND: Older advanced stage cancer patients, with changes in nutritional status, represent an important demand for palliative care. The aim was to determine the effects of 4 weeks of chocolate consumption on the nutritional status of older cancer patients in palliative care. METHODS: Older cancer patients in palliative care with ambulatory (n = 46) monitoring were randomized to control (CG, n = 15), intervention with 55% cocoa chocolate (IG1, n = 16) and intervention with white chocolate (IG2, n = 15) groups and evaluated before and after 4 weeks for nutritional status (primary outcome), evaluated by the Mini Nutritional Assessment tool (MNA). Food consumption, anthropometry, body composition, laboratory parameters and quality of life (QL) with the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer instrument were also evaluated. RESULTS: IG1 progressed with increased screening (estimated difference [95% CI]: - 1.3 [- 2.2;-0.4], p < 0.01), and nutritional (estimated difference [95% CI]: - 1.3 [- 2.5;-0.1], p = 0.04) scores on the MNA, with no change in anthropometry and body composition. Regarding antioxidant capacity, reduced glutathione levels increased (estimated difference [95% CI]: - 0.8 [- 1.6;-0.02], p = 0.04) and malondealdehyde levels decreased in IG2 (estimated difference [95% CI]:+ 4.9 [+ 0.7;+ 9.1], p = 0.02). Regarding QL, functionality improved in IG1, with higher score in the functional domain (estimated difference [95% CI]:-7.0 [- 13.3;-0.7], p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of chocolate with a greater cocoa content may contribute to the improvement of the nutritional status and functionality among older cancer patients in palliative care. The consumption of white chocolate was associated with improved oxidative stress. TRIAL REGISTRATION: A randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04367493 ).

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize nutritional status, body composition, oxidative stress, and inflammatory activity and to determine the possible associations between nutritional status and clinical variables in advanced cancer patients.Method: This was a cross-sectional study of 46 elderly cancer patients under palliative care with a prognosis of 30 days or more. Nutritional status, food intake, anthropometry, body composition (deuterium oxide method), metabolic profile, inflammation damage (C-reactive protein), oxidative damage (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine), and symptom intensity were evaluated.Results: Among elderly cancer patients, 36.9% were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Systemic inflammation was detected, with a correlation between worse nutritional status and higher C-reactive protein levels (p < 0.01, r= -0.57), while lower lean mass (p < 0.01, r = 0.62) and higher fat mass percentages (p < 0.01, r = 0.62) correlated with higher levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. Furthermore, daily energy (n = 25; 57.4%) and protein intake (n = 24; 52.2%) were lower than recommended in more than half the patients. The most prevalent symptoms were anxiety, impairment of well-being, drowsiness, tiredness, and lack of appetite.Conclusions: Despite preserved functionality, patients already had clinical and laboratory changes that, together with inadequate food intake, risk of malnutrition, systemic inflammation, and the presence of uncontrolled symptoms, alerted to the importance of an early and comprehensive palliative approach.

Less invasive protocols are necessary to study energy expenditure (EE) of cats living in homes for expressing their normal living conditions. The present study compared sampling times and the use of saliva, urine and blood to measure 2H and 18O to apply the doubly labelled water method. In the first study, four cats were used to evaluate the enrichment (2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 h) and elimination (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 d) of 2H and 18O (subcutaneously injected). The maximum enrichment was after 5 h (R2 0·82) of injection, with an Ln linear elimination of both isotopes (P < 0·001; R2 0·99). The results of EE were similar, regardless of the sampling time used (P = 0·999). In the second study, seven male cats and seven female cats were used. Before and after isotope injection (5 h, 7 d, 10 d and 14 d), blood, saliva and urine were collected. Isotope enrichment was lower in urine (P < 0·05) and at the similar level in blood and saliva. Isotope elimination was similar for all fluids (P < 0·473). The EE calculated with blood and saliva was similar but higher for urine (P = 0·015). According to Bland-Altman statistics, blood and saliva presented low bias and high correlation (P < 0·001), but this was not observed for urine (P = 0·096). Higher EE was observed for male cats (384 (se 39) kJ/kg0·67 per d) than for female cats (337 (se 34) kJ/kg0·67 per d; P < 0·05). The sampling time for the method is flexible, and saliva can be used as a substitute for blood.

BACKGROUND: Irisin is a myokine/adipokine that under stimulus of physical exercise is able to improve thermogenic capacity in adipose tissue. Likewise, taurine supplementation has demonstrated similar effects on energy metabolism. Therefore, we hypothesized that taurine supplementation combined with physical training may induce an increase in irisin concentrations, optimizing energy metabolism in obese individuals. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if taurine supplementation associated with a high intensity physical training program increases irisin levels in obese women. METHODS: double-blind study with 22 obese women (BMI 32.4 ±â€¯2.0 kg/m2, 36.6 ±â€¯6.4 years and sedentary) who were randomly divided into two groups, control group (GC, n = 14), exercised and supplemented with placebo (3 g of starch), and taurine group (GTAU, n = 8), exercised and supplemented with taurine (3 g). The subjects performed high intensity physical training, Deep Water Running (DWR), for 8 weeks, 3 times/week, for 50 min per training session, at 70-85% maximum heart rate. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was evaluated by indirect calorimetry, body composition by deuterium oxide, plasma taurine by HPLC, plasma irisin by Multiplex Kit, and food consumption by food records. The results were analyzed by an ANOVA two way repeated measures mixed model, with the Sidak post hoc (p < 0.05). RESULTS: No changes were observed in body composition. DWR increased RMR independent of supplementation (p < 0.001) and irisin levels (pg/mL) showed a significant difference only in the GTAU in 1 h after exercise (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: DWR associated with taurine supplementation resulted in increased plasma irisin concentrations after physical training in obese adult women.

Low-income women are the group with the highest levels of obesity worldwide. In low-income settings, the use of predictive equations, which yield a measure of the individuals' BMR, is a feasible approach to estimate the individuals' total energy expenditure (TEE), using the factorial method (calculated-TEE = BMR × physical activity level), an important step of the obesity nutritional care. The present study aimed to identify the predictive equation that, in conjunction with metabolic equivalents of tasks (MET) data from accelerometers, yields the calculated-TEE with better agreement compared with the TEE measured by doubly labelled water (TEE-DLW). Forty-five women aged 19-45 years, with excess weight and mothers of undernourished children, were included. They received DLW to determine TEE (14 d); at the same time, they used triaxial accelerometers (7 d) to estimate their MET. The Bland-Altman method, paired-sample t tests, concordance correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error were used to assess the agreement. Maximum allowed differences were defined as 24 %, based on the within-variance coefficient of the energy intake of the sample. Eleven equations were studied. The calculated-TEE obtained by five equations showed non-significant bias: Dietary Reference Intake (Institute of Medicine (2005) Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrate, Fiber, Fat, Fatty Acids, Cholesterol, Protein, and Amino Acids), FAO/WHO/UNU ((2001) Food and Nutrition Technical Report Series), Harris & Benedict ((1919) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA4, 370-373), Henry & Rees ((1991) Eur J Clin Nutr45, 177-185) and Schofield ((1985) Hum Nutr Clin Nutr39, 5-41). The mean percentage differences were -1·5, -0·8, 2·2, -2·2 and 2·0 %, respectively. Considering all parameters, FAO/WHO/UNU ((2001) Food and Nutrition Technical Report Series) equation performed slightly better than the others; nevertheless, no equation in conjunction with the estimated-MET showed a calculated-TEE with its CI for the Bland-Altman limits of agreement inside the pre-defined acceptable range.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) represents a serious intestinal absorption disorder, and patients may be prone to severe malnutrition. Dietetic therapy is critically important both for immediate prognosis and successful long-term rehabilitation. To maintain energy balance, an accurate assessment of energy intake is required. Our objective was to compare energy intake (EI) assessed by 24-h dietary recalls (EIrecall), a standard clinical assessment, with the total energy expenditure measured by the doubly labelled water (TEEdlw) method in SBS patients and matched controls. A total of twenty-two participants (eleven each in the SBS and control groups (CG), six female and five male) were evaluated; CG were matched to SBS patients on the basis of age, BMI and sex. TEE was measured by DLW and compared with EI determined by four 24-h dietary recalls using the USDA Automated Multiple-Pass Method. Bland-Altman plots and paired Student's t test were used to compare EIrecall with TEEdlw (P<0·05). Participants' mean age was 53 (sd 8) years. TEEdlw (7·85 (SD 1·16) MJ/d, 0·14 (SD 0·02) MJ/kg per d) was significantly lower (P=0·014) compared with EIrecall (11·07 (SD 3·45) MJ/d, 0·21 (SD 0·08) MJ/kg per d) in the SBS group. On the other hand, in the CG group TEEdlw (10·02 (SD 1·86) MJ/d, 0·18 (SD 0·03) MJ/kg per d) was significantly higher (P=0·001) compared with EIrecall (7·19 (SD 1·68) MJ/d, 0·13 (SD 0·03) MJ/kg per d). In SBS patients, reported EI is higher than DLW-measured EI. Therefore, providing or prescribing energetic intake based on EIrecall without accounting for potential malabsorption-related losses can compromise the energy needs in SBS patients and affect nutritional status in the long term.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported increased resting energy expenditure (REE) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS). However, limited data exist on the total energy expenditure (TEE). This study was aimed at evaluating the REE and TEE of HIV-infected patients with and without HALS by using the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique and the activity monitor based on accelerometry system (AM), and comparing the results obtained using both methods. METHODS: Evaluated total of 45 HIV+ men undergoing antiretroviral therapy, including 18 LIPO- (without lipodystrophy) and 27 LIPO+ (with lipodystrophy) individuals were evaluated. Habitual physical activity patterns were measured by using the ActivPAL™ AM system, REE by indirect calorimetry, and TEE by DLW and AM. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between LIPO- and LIPO+ in REE (1,433 ± 196 vs. 1,510 ± 203 kcal), TEE-DLW (2,691 ± 856 vs. 2,618 ± 415 kcal) and TEE-AM (2,560 ± 458 vs. 2,594 ± 456 kcal), respectively. RQ was a predictor of REE in LIPO+. TEE estimated by the AM had a moderate correlation with DLW, but there was a wide variance in the intra-subject results. CONCLUSIONS: TEE is not increased in HIV-infected patients with HALS. AM should be used with caution for TEE evaluation during clinical practice.

A better knowledge of the differences existing between individuals who maintain cognition up to 100 years of age or more and those of the same age who present dementia syndrome may be of help in understanding the dementia of the very elderly people. The aim of this study was to assess cardiovascular risk factors and inflammatory markers among centenarians with and without dementia. A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on centenarians residing in a middle-size city. Volunteers were evaluated by comprehensive geriatric assessment at home. General laboratory examinations were performed and cardiovascular risk and inflammatory activity markers were determined. Mean subject age was 101 ± 2 years, and 82 % were women. Assessment of dementia syndrome revealed that 36.4 % of the centenarians had preserved cognition. Centenarians with dementia had lower schooling (p < 0.01), lower body mass index (p = 0.02) and higher homocysteine levels (p < 0.01) and tended to have a lower systolic blood pressure (p = 0.05). Regarding the markers of inflammatory activity, demented subjects had high levels of interleukin-6 (p < 0.01), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (p = 0.02), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p = 0.01) and lower albumin levels (p = 0.02) compared to centenarians without dementia. Concluding, centenarians with preserved cognition had better nutritional status, lower homocysteinemia, tendency to higher blood pressure and lower inflammatory activity compared to demented subjects.

BACKGROUND: there are no accurate methods for the assessment of food intake in older populations, under-reporting of intake being highly prevalent. There is controversy about which dietary assessment method and what person's characteristics are associated with greater under-reporting rates. OBJECTIVE: to assess the correlation between under-reporting of energy intake (EI) and different percentages of body fat in independent older people. DESIGN: cross-sectional study. SETTTING: area assisted by the Family Health Program of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Brazil. SUJECTS: one hundred volunteers aged 60-70 years. METHODS: all volunteers had their body composition assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. In second phase, 41 volunteers were evaluated, representing the four quartiles of fat percentage. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured by the doubly labelled water method, and EI was assessed by 24-h recalls and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). TEE and EI values, EI-to-TEE ratios and EI-TEE values were compared. RESULTS: TEE was 2,220 ± 601 kcal, while the EI was 1,919 ± 602 kcal (24-h recall) and 2,119 ± 670 kcal (FFQ). The proportion of under-reporters was 31 and 40.5%, respectively. Under-reporting was more frequent in subjects with higher percentage of body fat and in females (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: under-reporting was more frequent among older persons with higher percentage of body fat in both methods of assessment of food intake. Older persons follow the same profile of under-reporting as younger adults.

Institutionalized elderly have an increased risk of changes in nutritional status, therefore sensitive parameters are necessary for the identification of changes in nutritional status. The aim of this study was to evaluate parameters for analysis of the nutritional status of institutionalized elderly in a period of three months by means of biochemical and anthropometric measurements. Eighty one volunteers were selected, with 78 ± 10 years old and 53% female. Anthropometric data showed that the variables body mass index, weight, fat mass, and phase angle of the institutionalized elderly in three months decreased with significant difference between the assessments. Among all the biochemical and anthropometric measurements, body mass index, weight, fat mass, phase angle and blood fat were the indicators of nutritional assessment that identified early changes and nutritional risks of institutionalized elderly in three months. It is noteworthy that the early evaluation of nutritional indicators can prevent nutritional risk among elderly in living in rest homes.

BACKGROUND: The use of plant protein intrinsically labelled with stable isotopes provides an innovative solution to assess the efficiency of protein intake by humans. Here, the incorporation of 2H has been applied to intrinsically labelled plant protein in the common bean. This study aimed to evaluate which is the best phenological phase of seed maturation to incorporate the heavy hydrogen isotope 2H into seed amino acids. Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were grown in pots, then, after 50 days sowing, 2H2O dissolved in irrigation water was applied, then again at an interval of either 3, 6, 9, and 12 days. RESULTS: Applications of 2H2O at 6, 9, and 12 days after the first application, in the full-flowering stage, were the best treatments for enriching protein-bound amino acids in the bean seed with 2H. CONCLUSION: All treatments resulted in enrichment above 500 ppm, so the treatments (quantity and timing of 2H2O addition) were deemed successful for enriching bean seeds. This makes the intrinsically labelled seeds suitable for preparing test meals to assess the digestion and essential amino acid absorption of common bean amino acids in human subjects.

This study aimed to evaluate the supplementation of lactating cows with thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) essential oil (TEO) on the centesimal composition and microbiological quality of raw milk. Twenty-four lactating cows (400 ± 42.9 kg initial body weight, 50 ± 10 days in milk, and 22.05 ± 4.34 kg/d milk production, second lactation) from an experimental farm in the region of Ribeirão Preto/SP, Brazil were used, divided randomly assigned to two groups: Control- 8 mL/d soybean oil (as placebo), and Treatment- 8 mL/d TEO, per cow/day. Both oils were offered encapsulated and administered daily via esophageal tube, for 21 days. On d 21, milk was collected from each animal, fractionated into 50 mL bottles. The microbiological quality of the raw was analyzed for standard plate count (SPC), milk composition (protein, fat, lactose, and solids non fat (SNF)), and thymol concentration. The treated group had significantly lower mean values for SPC after 168 h under refrigeration, and no differences were observed in the milk composition. The supplementation of lactating dairy cows with 8 mL/d TEO represents a promising alternative to controlling microbial spoilage in raw milk, allowing the reduction of economic losses in the milk chain, in addition to providing consumers with a safer product. However, further research should be conducted to better assess the effect of TEO supplementation on milk quality, such as sensory and toxicity studies, in addition to evaluating the effect of milk processing on oil activity and the effect on consumer health.

This study compared mirtazapine with megestrol in the management of cancer-related anorexia-cachexia syndrome in patients with advanced cancer. A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial involving patients with advanced cancer and anorexia-cachexia syndrome was performed. Participants received mirtazapine 30 mg/day or megestrol 320 mg/day for eight weeks. The primary endpoint was the effect of mirtazapine on weight gain and the secondary endpoints were its effect on appetite, muscle strength, physical performance, body composition, adverse events, and medication adherence. Linear regression model with mixed effects was applied and a significance level of 5% was adopted. Fifty-two patients were randomized. Mean age was 65.8 ± 8.4 years. There was weight gain in 52% of the participants in the megestrol group and in 38% in the mirtazapine group after four weeks (p = 0.040). Appetite improved in 92% of the participants in the megestrol group and in 56% in the mirtazapine group after eight weeks (p = 0.007). In the sub-analysis by sex, women showed improvement in appetite (p < 0.001) and weight gain (p < 0.005) in the mirtazapine group, which was not observed in men. Mirtazapine appears to be inferior to megestrol in weight and appetite improvement. However, there may be a difference in the therapeutic response between sexes.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the agreement between the total energy expenditure (TEE) estimated by the activPAL® triaxial accelerometers (ACC) and the TEE measured by the doubly labeled water method (DLW), as well as to assess if these values differ between the classifications of body mass index (BMI). Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Low-income adult women (19-45y) with BMI ≥ 18.5 kg/m2 were included. Accelerometry data (activPAL® ) were collected over 7 consecutive days, which were used to calculate TEE-ACC and compared with DLW data. The Bland-Altman method, concordance correlation coefficient and root mean square error were used to assess agreement between methods. Results: The sample consisted of 55 women with a mean age of 31 ± 5 years. The agreement between TEE-ACC and TEE-DLW showed a bias of -142.5 kcal (-7.1%). Among the BMI classifications, participants with normal weight show a bias of -417.1 kcal (-21.0%), participants with overweight, -87.5 kcal (-3.9%) and participants with obesity, 97.5 kcal (4.3%). Furthermore, the bias between the methods showed a significant and positive correlation with the body weight (r = 0.49; p < 0.01). Conclusion: The TEE-ACC estimates from activPAL® were reasonably accurate when compared to the TEE-DLW, especially in women with overweight and obesity, being much less accurate in individuals with normal weight.

A high-protein hypercaloric diet enriched with glutamine and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids was called an onco-diet. The goal was to verify the modulation of the inflammatory response and body composition of female dogs with mammary tumor after mastectomy, during onco-diet consumption, using a randomized, double-blinded, clinical trial. Six bitches (average age of 8.6 years) were allocated into Control Group-diet without glutamine, EPA and DHA supplementation; and six bitches (10.0 years) were allocated into Test-diet enriched with glutamine and omega-3. Serum measurements of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, IGF-1, C-reactive protein and determination of body composition were performed at pre- and post-surgical times. Statistical tests were used to compare the nutrient intake and dietary effects on inflammatory variables between the diets. No differences in concentrations of different cytokines (p>0.05) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (p = 0.51) were observed between the groups. The test group had a higher concentration of IGF-1 (p<0.05), higher percentage of muscle mass (p<0.01) and lower body fat (p<0.01), but the difference was present from initial and throughout the study. Onco-diet, enriched with glutamine and omega-3, in the amounts evaluated in this study, was not sufficient to modulate the inflammation and body composition of female dogs with mammary tumors submitted to unilateral mastectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of different physical exercise programs and polymorphisms of the FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated gene) on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents with overweight and obesity. METHODS: A randomized, parallel, double-blind clinical trial consisting of the adolescent overweight from the state public network, in a simple representative random sample, who participated in an aerobic exercise or weight training intervention for 10 weeks. Anthropometry, body composition, biochemical markers, sexual maturation, and rs9939609 polymorphism in the FTO gene were assessed. 347 adolescents had their characterization of nutritional status. 72 individuals with overweight and obesity were invited to participate. 39 remained for the start of the program and were randomly allocated to both types of intervention. In the end, 26 subjects participated in the intervention programs, with 12 and 14 in the aerobic and weight training programs, respectively. RESULTS: Heterozygous and homozygous bearers of risk allele A participating in the aerobic program showed improvements in glycemia (p = 0.002) and total cholesterol (p = 0.023) and a reduction in body fat mass (p = 0.041). The weight training program reduced glycemia in patients with the risk allele A (p = 0.027). Cameron's stage four sexual maturation participants were 2.1 times more likely to improve their body fat (CI = 1.31-3.39). CONCLUSION: Aerobic exercises produced exclusively a significant decrease in fat mass and total cholesterol in patients with risk allele A. Distinct physical exercise programs may cause diverse changes in risk variables related to the health of adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: "Pocket formulas" are practical alternatives for calculating an individual's total energy expenditure (TEE). Typically, more sophisticated predictive equations are used, such as the new equations proposed in the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI). Nevertheless, these new equations necessitate estimating physical activity levels (PALs). The aim of this study was to compare the use of pocket formulas (kcal/kg of body weight) with the new predictive equations for energy expenditure proposed by the DRI (2023) in healthy women and with the doubly labeled water (DLW) method to predict TEE. METHODS: The TEEs of healthy adult women were measured by DLW and calculated using the pocket formulas (× 20, × 25, × 30, and × 35 kcal/kg of body weight) and the new DRI equation. PALs by triaxial accelerometers were also collected. RESULTS: The study included 55 women. For the entire sample, the × 30 pocket formula had the lowest bias (-6%; limits of agreement [LOAs]: -39.8; 27.5; root mean square error: 373.4) and the highest precision (42%). The pocket formulas showed reasonable agreement in the different body mass index categories compared with the results found by the 2023 DRI proposal. For individuals with normal weight, the agreement was × 35 kcal/kg: bias (%) = -4.8; LoA = -41.5; 31.8, with overweight, it was × 30 kcal/kg: bias (%) = -2.2; LoA = -25.1; 20.6, and with obesity, it was × 30 kcal/kg: bias (%) = 4.2; LoA = -21.1; 29.4. CONCLUSION: Pocket formulas provide a reasonable agreement with TEE in healthy, sedentary, or low-active adult women, which may be a more simplistic strategy when there is no PAL data for calculating the DRI equations.
