RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is a dynamic process that often involves a series of unsuccessful quit attempts before long-term abstinence is achieved. To implement interventions that lead to long-term abstinence, it will be necessary to understand the determinants of smoking cessation. Therefore, the main objective of the present study was to determine the effect of factors influencing both smoking cessation attempts and successful smoking cessation in the general population of Iran. METHODS: The data of 1293 participants whose information was obtained through a national cross-sectional study entitled "Survey of Risk Factors of Noncommunicable Diseases in 2016" were analyzed. There were three response levels: "quit attempt and successful quit", "quit attempt and unsuccessful quit", and "no quit attempt and unsuccessful quit". A multinomial logistic regression model was used to assess the effect of covariates on response. RESULTS: The mean (sd) age of all participants was 47.21 (13.65) years. According to the results, 883 people (68.29%) did not attempt to quit smoking, and of those who attempted to quit smoking, only 64 (15.61%) men were successful. The factors of living in an urban area (OR = 1.71) and past smoking intensity (OR = 1.967) were associated with no quit attempt and unsuccessful quitting. In addition, physician recommendation to quit smoking was a protective factor for no quit attempt and unsuccessful quit (OR = 0.599). Alcohol consumption was also a protective factor against successful quitting for both attempters (OR = 0.351) and nonattempters (OR = 0.359). CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco control programs should be implemented with a greater focus on heavy smokers and alcohol users. In addition, the role of health professionals in encouraging smokers to quit smoking should not be ignored.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), and Kegel exercise is considered as one of the non-surgical management methods. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the results of randomized clinical trials (RCT) about the effect of pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises on reducing low back pain . METHODS: The present study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline (2020) to January 2022. The relevant studies were searched in the MagIran, SID, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov databases and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree terms, which were combined with free text word. The heterogeneity of the studies was checked using I2 statistic. RESULTS: Finally, 19 RCTs with a sample size of 456 subjects in the intervention group and 470 in the control group were included in the meta-analysis. The low back pain intensity in the intervention group decreased up to 1.261 ± 0.213 (SMD ± 95% CI) with I2 = 87.60 more than that in the control group (P <0.001). The low back pain intensity in postpartum women decreased up to 1.614 ± 0.312 (95% CI) followed by pregnant women as 1.282 ± 0.479 (SMD ± 95% CI) more than that in other populations. But due to high the heterogeneity in all sub-groups (I2 > 80%) this result should be considered with caution. Meta-regression analysis showed the effect of pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises increased by increasing the year of publication, quality assessment score of the article, and the number of weeks of intervention (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present meta-analysis, pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises significantly reduce the low back pain intensity. Therefore, these exercises can be regarded as a part of a low back pain management plan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Given that patients' medication adherence is regarded as the major part of disease control and improving health literacy can be effective in promoting adherence to healthy behaviors, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of health literacy intervention based on the medication adherence among uncontrolled hypertensive patients using mobile health (M-health). METHODS: An interventional study with a quasi-experimental design, was conducted on 118 uncontrolled hypertensive patients. Participants were randomly divided into the intervention (n = 59) and control (n = 59) groups using blocked randomization. In the intervention group, a mobile health (M-health) program was designed using programmed instruction to improve patients' health literacy over a period of 3 months. Data was collected by administering health literacy and medication adherence questionnaires to participants before and after the intervention. The analysis involved using the independent sample t-test to compare the variables before and after the study. RESULTS: Before the intervention, the total score of health literacy was 33.34 and 33.14 in the intervention and control groups, respectively. After the intervention, it increased to 40.36 and 34.20 in the intervention and control groups, respectively, which was statistically significant in the intervention group (p = 0.01). Moreover, the medication adherence score of the intervention group significantly increased after the intervention. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased in the intervention group. However, it should be noted that the decrease in systolic blood pressure by 148.98 was statistically significant, while the decrease observed in diastolic blood pressure in the intervention group was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). CONCLUSION: The application of programmed instruction through M-Health has shown a positive effect on the health literacy of uncontrolled hypertensive patients. In addition to detecting and treating patients, it is important to prioritize the improvement of health literacy in terms of medication adherence and the adoption of healthy behaviors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aims of current meta-analysis was to combine data and statistics on the global prevalence of OSA and related factors in older adults. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: To find related studies, various databases were searched including Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), MagIran, and SID (two local databases) using appropriate keywords, MeSH and controlled vocabulary, with no time limitation up to June, 2021. Heterogeneity of studies was evaluated using I2, and Egger's regression intercept was used to detect publication bias. FINDINGS: 39 studies with a total sample size of 33,353 people were included. The pooled prevalence of OSA in older adults was 35.9% (95% confidence interval: 28.7%-43.8%; I2 = 98.81%). Considering the high heterogeneity of included studies, subgroup analysis was conducted and yielded the most prevalent in Asia continent with 37.0% (95% CI: 22.4%-54.5%; I2 = 97.32%). However, heterogeneity was remained at high level. In the majority of studies, OSA was significantly and positively related to obesity, increased BMI, age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Results of this study showed that global prevalence of OSA in older adults is high and is significantly related to obesity, increased BMI, age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and daytime sleepiness. These findings can be used by experts working on the diagnosis and management of OSA in the geriatric population. These findings can be used by experts on the diagnosis and treatment of OSA in the older adults. Due to high heterogeneity, findings should be interpreted with great caution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) refers to any abnormality in the physiology of swallowing in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which leads to the related clinical complications, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and sever complication, such as aspiration pneumonia, suffocation, and eventually, premature death. The previous studies indicated a various range of prevalence of OD. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to standardize the global prevalence of OD in different populations. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted using Embase, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) databases, and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree and Free Text words, with no time limitation until November 2021. The heterogeneity among studies was quantified using I2 index and the random effects model was used, due to the high heterogeneity among the results of studies included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS: The systematic literature search retrieved 2092 studies. After excluding the irrelevant studies, ultimately 27 articles with a sample size of 9841 were included in the meta-analysis. After combining the studies, the overall estimate of the global prevalence rate of OD was 43.8% (95% CI 33.3-54.9%) and the highest prevalence rate was estimated in Africa with 64.2% (95% CI 53.2-73.9%). Given the subgroup analysis based on the study population, the highest prevalence of OD was related to Dementia with 72.4% (95% CI 26.7-95.0%). The results of meta-regression indicated that the prevalence of OD has an increasing trend with the enhancement of year of publication and mean age. CONCLUSION: The results of the present systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence of OD is high in different populations and its trend has been increasing in recent years. Therefore, the appropriate strategies should be applied to reduce the prevalence of OD by finding its causation and monitoring at all levels, as well as providing feedback to hospitals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Elevated blood pressure is associated with cardiovascular disease, stroke and chronic kidney disease. In this study, we examined the socioeconomic inequality and its related factors in prevalence, Awareness, Treatment and Control (ATC) of hypertension (HTN) in Iran. METHOD: The study used data from the recruitment phase of The Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN (PERSIAN). A sample of 162,842 adults aged > = 35 years was analyzed. HTN was defined according to the Joint National Committee)JNC-7(. socioeconomic inequality was measured using concentration index (Cn) and curve. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 49.38(SD = ± 9.14) years and 44.74% of the them were men. The prevalence of HTN in the total population was 22.3%(95% CI: 20.6%; 24.1%), and 18.8%(95% CI: 16.8%; 20.9%) and 25.2%(95% CI: 24.2%; 27.7%) in men and women, respectively. The percentage of awareness treatment and control among individuals with HTN were 77.5%(95% CI: 73.3%; 81.8%), 82.2%(95% CI: 70.2%; 81.6%) and 75.9%(95% CI: 70.2%; 81.6%), respectively. The Cn for prevalence of HTN was -0.084. Two factors, age (58.46%) and wealth (32.40%), contributed most to the socioeconomic inequality in the prevalence of HTN. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HTN was higher among low-SES individuals, who also showed higher levels of awareness. However, treatment and control of HTN were more concentrated among those who had higher levels of SES, indicating that people at a higher risk of adverse event related to HTN (the low SES individuals) are not benefiting from the advantage of treatment and control of HTN. Such a gap between diagnosis (prevalence) and control (treatment and control) of HTN needs to be addressed by public health policymakers.

RESUMO

Background: The emergence of the coronavirus disease of the 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Iran has markedly affected lives and taken a toll on Iranians' mental health, especially in women. The current study investigated factors that contributed to both perceived stress and quality of life (Qol) among women during the COVID-19 pandemic in Karaj, Iran. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey study was conducted between November 30, 2020, and January 30, 2021. A researcher-made questionnaire with 4 subscales, including information seeking, social support, primary appraisal, and secondary appraisal, was used. Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) questionnaires were also applied. A total of 581 participants completed the study. The convenience sampling method was used in this study. Multiple mediation analyses were applied using pathway analysis. Results: The mean age ± SD of the participants was 38.57±7.68 years, and 40.8% had a higher education than a high school diploma. Based on the final fitted model, higher perceived stress had a direct impact on mental QoL (ß = 0.47). The Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Incremental fit index (IFI), and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) were calculated as 1, and χ2/df was 4.87. Educational level and social support from both the direct and indirect pathway affected QoL. Social support affected both information-seeking behavior and secondary appraisal (ß = 0.50: 95% CI, 0.38-0.59). Furthermore, information-seeking behavior and secondary appraisal affected perceived stress. Perceived stress followed by educational level had the strongest and primary appraisal had the poorest indirect association with mental QoL. Conclusion: In conclusion, primary appraisal, secondary appraisal, social support, educational level, perceived stress, and information-seeking behavior were correlated with higher levels of mental QoL among women. Social support and improving the situation appraisal can provide appreciated support to manage stress induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Further assessment is needed to determine the vulnerable groups such as illiterate people.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy distress is a combination of anxiety, stress, and depression during pregnancy. The first step in preventing pregnancy distress is to identify women at risk. The present study assessed adaptation and psychometric adequency of the Persian Adapted Version of Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale (P-TPDS). METHODS: By Brislin's translation guidelines, TPDS was translated to Persian. This was followed by determining the face validity of P-TPDS and evaluating construct validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to estimate reliability. RESULTS: A final 16-item scale was loaded on four distinct constructs jointly accounting for 59.62% of variance. The factors were labelled as delivery-related worries, partner involvement, pregnancy-related worries, and social-related worries. The alpha coefficients for P-TPDS subscales ranged from 0.85 to 0.91 and ICC ranged from 0.70 to 0.77. All comparative indices of the model including CFI, IFI, NFI, and NNFI were above 0.9 showing the goodness of fit for the data with a RMSEA of 0.04, lower bound: 0.038. CONCLUSIONS: The Persian adapted version of TPDS (P-TPDS) is a reliable and valid scale for assessing pregnancy distress among pregnant women in Iran.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy plays a major role in the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The original Cardiovascular Management Self-efficacy Scale (CMSS) was developed in 2016 in Italian patients with CVD; however, no such scale exists for Iranian patients with CVD. OBJECTIVE: We translated the CMSS into Persian and assessed its validity, reliability, and psychometric properties in Iranian patients with CVD. METHODS: This study was conducted for 4 months in 2017 on a group of consenting patients with CVD (N = 363) recruited from a cardiovascular hospital in Kermanshah, Iran. The reliability of the Persian CMSS was evaluated. We assessed validity, including face, content, construct, convergent, divergent, and discriminate validity, using the General Self-efficacy Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Scale. Known-group validity was assessed among patients with high blood pressure. RESULTS: The Persian CMSS had acceptable face and content validity. No floor or ceiling effects were found for the total scale. Cronbach α was calculated as .68. Test-retest reliability was confirmed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC1,3 = 0.98, P < .001). Using exploratory factor analysis, 3 subscales were identified, similar to the original version. Significant correlations were found between the Persian CMSS and both the General Self-efficacy Scale (r = 0.94, P < .001) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (r = -0.35, P < .05). Self-efficacy measured using the Persian CMSS was statistically different between 2 levels of patients' health status (P < .05). Patients with hypertension had a lower level of self-efficacy than those in the healthy group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The Persian version of CMSS provides a practical, reliable, and valid scale for evaluating self-efficacy in the clinical management of Persian Iranian patients with CVD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of present study was to describe the effect of multimorbidity on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a simple sampling method of 296 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery in a referral hospital of the northern part of Iran was conducted between April, 2015 and September, 2016. Multimorbidity was defined as the presence of at least two chronic diseases based on self-reporting and medical records. HRQoL was measured using the 36-item short form (SF-36) health status survey. We used analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess the effect of multimorbidity on mental and physical component of HRQoL. RESULTS: Approximately, 69% of CAD patients had at least one other disease like diabetes or hypertension. Patients without multimorbidity compared with patients with multimorbidity were significantly older (p = 0.012) and more educated (p = 0.002). Both physical and mental component score of HRQoL was better in patients without any morbidity (48.82 vs. 43.93 with 95%CI of mean difference: 3.37-6.42 and 54.85 vs. 50.44 with 95% CI of mean difference: 1.68-7.15, respectively). Both physical and mental component score was significantly lower in female and lower educated patients (physical mean score 43.07 vs. 46.54 with P = .001 and 42.53 vs. 46.82 with P < .001 and mental mean score 49.98 vs. 52.65 with P = .055 and 49.80 vs. 52.75 with P = .022 for sex and education, respectively). Also, two-way ANOVA showed that regards to morbidity, physical component score was grater in patients with lower education level than higher education level (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that women, lower education level and overweight reported lower quality of life. HRQoL is affected by multimorbidity among CAD patients specially in less educated.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the psychometric properties of 2 heart failure (HF)-specific quality of life questionnaires and the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) in patients with HF. DESIGN: A methodological study based on 3-month follow-up data for evaluating psychometric properties of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) questionnaires. SETTING: Cardiac rehabilitation center at a cardiovascular research institute. PARTICIPANTS: Eligible patients with HF (N=60). INTERVENTIONS: Exercise training in cardiac rehabilitation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The SF-36, the MacNew Heart Disease questionnaire, and the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) and New York Heart Association functional classification. RESULTS: Items from the MLHFQ and the MacNew questionnaire had acceptable correlations (r>.30, P<.05). Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were adequate at ≥0.7 for the MLHFQ subscales. Correlations for the MLHFQ and the MacNew with SF-36 similar items ranged from .28 to .50 and from .26 to .60, respectively. Similar scales from the MacNew and MLHFQ showed strong correlations at baseline and follow-up, supporting the convergent validity. Improvement in HRQOL was significant for all MLHFQ subscales (P<.001) and the MacNew emotional (P<.05) and social (P<.001) subscales. The MLHFQ demonstrated the most responsiveness to changes and discriminated disease severity the best. The follow-up scores for all MLHFQ and 2 MacNew subscales were significantly greater in patients who improved compared with those who showed no change or deteriorated. CONCLUSIONS: The MLHFQ was more responsive to changes of HRQOL than the MacNew questionnaire over time in patients with HF. The MacNew questionnaire was more responsive to changes than the SF-36.

RESUMO

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune bullous and erosive mucocutaneous disease. Rarely, it occurs in patients with other autoimmune disease. The relation between PV and neurological disorders is unclear and needs to be more studied. Here, we report a case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), followed by dermatologic involvement. Histopathological evidence and direct immunofluorescence are consistent with PV. Systemic corticosteroid and azathioprine were effective in the treatment of mucocutaneous lesions. PV seems to be accidentally associated with ALS. Expression of major histocompatibility complex Class II in autoimmune disease and production of autoantibodies have been proposed to describe the association of PV with ALS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors such as weight, salt intake, and physical activity have shown to be important in treating hypertension. The object of this study was to describe feasibility and to assess the effectiveness of a multicomponent lifestyle intervention on high blood pressure (BP) of Iranian women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in four health centers by recruiting 161 women aged 35-65 years with high BP and randomizing them to a 4-week lifestyle modification (n = 80) or control group (n = 81). BP level and other health behavioral factors were assessed before and after the 4-week intervention and also after 6 months. RESULTS: The mean systolic BP changed from 158.8 (±8.1) mmHg to 153.2 (±6.4) mmHg during 4-week and to 145.5 (±4.6)) mmHg after 6 months in the intervention group (P < 0.001). There was a significant difference between two groups of study after 4-week mean = 5.6 (confidence interval [CI] = 5.1-6.6) and 6 months follow mean (CI = 12.3-14.6).(P < 0.001) A significant correlation was detected between systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) with weight, body mass index, waist circumference, salt intake, and physical activity level (P < 0.001). Stepwise regression analyses indicated that the weight, dietary salt intake, and physical activity level were significant predictors of SBP and DBP. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that lifestyle modification program is associated with improvements in BP level in Iranian women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Regular exercise has been associated with improved quality of life (QoL) in patients with heart failure (HF). However, less is known on the theoretical framework, depicting how educational intervention on psychological, social, and cognitive variables affects physical activity (PA). The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a social cognitive theory-based (SCT-based) exercise intervention in patients with HF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial, with measurements at baseline, immediately following the intervention, and at 1, 3, and 6 months follow-up. Sixty patients who are referred to the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) unit and meet the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to either an intervention group or a usual-care control group. Data will be collected using various methods (i.e., questionnaires, physical tests, paraclinical tests, patients' interviews, and focus groups). The patients in the intervention group will receive eight face-to-face counseling sessions, two focus groups, and six educational sessions over a 2-month period. The intervention will include watching videos, using book and pamphlets, and sending short massage services to the participants. The primary outcome measures are PA and QoL. The secondary outcome measures will be the components of SCT, heart rate and blood pressure at rest, body mass index, left ventricular ejection fraction, exercise capacity, and maximum heart rate. CONCLUSION: The findings of this trial may assist with the development of a theoretical model for exercise intervention in CR. The intervention seems to be promising and has the potential to bridge the gap of the usually limited and incoherent provision of educational care in the CR setting.

RESUMO

Background: Considering that metformin is widely used in the treatment of diabetes, and its protective role against various malignancies, the strength and validity of the available evidence from related systematic reviews and meta-analysis were evaluated. Methods: Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Web of science databases, and Google Scholar and manual screening of retrieved references were systematically searched from their inception dates to 24 March 2020 by extracting the effect size (Odds ratios (OR) and relative risk (RR) in each study. To present the forest plot of effect of metformin on each cancer, Stata version 14.2 was used. Results: This study included 36 meta-analysis studies and 620 original research studies (26 randomized control trials studies and 594 observational studies (cohort, case-control)) covering 15 different cancers. Overall, metformin medication prevented different cancers, including ovarian cancer (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.62,0.93), cervical cancer (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.83), endometrial cancer (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.82,1.35), liver cancer (OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.47,0.74), pancreatic cancer (OR = 0.59, 95%CI 0.50,0.69), head and neck cancer (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.61,0.83), stomach cancer (OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.26,1.99), colorectal cancer (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.59,0.91), colorectal adenoma cancer (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.65,0.86), colon cancer (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69,0.91), esophagus cancer (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83,0.98), lung cancer (OR = 0.92, CI95%:0.85,0.99), breast cancer (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.84,1.02), prostate cancer (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.85-1.04), and bladder cancer (OR = 0.94 95% CI: 0.64,1.38). Conclusions: Treatment with metformin can significantly decrease the chance of all cancers with larger preventive effect on hepatocellular carcinoma and smaller preventive effect on lung and breast cancers.

RESUMO

Although several studies have investigated the long-term association of respirable particulate matter (PM ≤ 10 µm) with the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI), this association is inconclusive or even contradictory. This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to quantify the long-term effect of exposure to respirable PM on the incidence of MI. To find relevant publications, online databases, including Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science, were searched on October 10, 2021. A random-effect model was used to calculate the pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of MI across studies. Heterogeneity was presented with reporting I2 index. Of 4591 records found in the primary searching, the number of 24 prospective cohort studies with more than 70 million participants was included. The pooled HR (95% CI) of MI per 1 µg/m3 increment of respirable PM was estimated as 1.01 (1.00, 1.01). Subgroup analyses according to aerodynamic diameter of PM showed an only significant stronger risk of MI per 1 µg/m3 increase in PM with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 µm (HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00, 1.01). No sex difference was found in the association of respirable PM with MI incidence. There was only a significant association among studies defined MI as ICD-10: I21 code (HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00, 1.01) and studies defined MI as ICD-10: I21-22 (HR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.00, 1.04). No significant publication bias was observed across studies. In conclusion, this study confirms a significant association between long-term exposure to respirable PM air pollution and development of MI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lavender is considered as one of the medicinal plants to manage stress. Although many preliminary studies evaluated the effect of lavender on individuals' stress level, to the best of our knowledge, we did not find a study that summarizes the results. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the Pooled effect of lavender on the stress level of individuals using systematic review and meta-analysis. METHOD: A systematic literature review based on PRISMA 2020 was performed on the SID, MagIran, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS) databases, and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree and Free Text words, including "Lavender*", "Lavandula*", "Stress*", "Stress Disorders, Traumatic", and "Stress, Psychological" with no time limitation until August 2021: We also searched two Iranain free local resourses including MagIran https://www.magiran.com and Scientific Information Database (SID) https://www.sid.ir. The quality assessment of studies was performed using JBI checklist. Heterogeneity among studies was quantified using I2 index and Random Effects model was used to combine the data and perform the meta-analysis. RESULTS: In the initial search, 1520 articles were found. After excluding the irrelevant studies, finally, 21 articles with a sample size of 791 in the intervention group and 804 in the control group were included in the meta-analysis. As a result of combining the studies, stress score after using lavender in the intervention group showed a significant decrease of 0.63 ± 0.13 (95% CI) more than that in the control group (P < 0.001). The results of subgroup analysis demonstrated that the highest standardized mean difference (SMD) before and after the intervention in the intervention group compared to the control group was related to L. angustifolia species with 0.73 ± 0.22, student groups with 2.27 ± 1.34, and diagnostic tool of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) with 0.82 ± 0.42, indicating that the difference between the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The pooled estimation of this systematic reiew and meta-analysis revealed that lavender significantly reduces individuals' stress. Therefore, it seems that the use of lavender can be considered as a part of a stress management programs, especially in student groups.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral pigmentation is due to the accumulation of one or more pigments in tissues, causing changes in the color of the oral mucosal surfaces. Understanding the exact global prevalence of oral pigmentation and its associated factors helps researchers make the proper interventions at the right time; in this respect, the objective of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the global prevalence of oral pigmentation and its related factors. METHOD: A systematic review and meta- analysis were conducted using the following databases: Magiran, SID, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar. The search was run to retrieve articles published from inception until July 2021, and the following keywords were applied in the search strategy: "Epidemiolo*", "Prevalen*", "Factor*", "Pigment*", "Mouth", and "Oral". The I2 index was used to assess the heterogeneity of the studies, and Egger's test was used to examine the publication bias. RESULTS: Sixty-nine articles, with a sample size of 70,668 people, meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The pooled of prevalence of oral pigmentation was estimated to be 20.8% (95% confidence interval: 17.1-1.25%). The prevalence of oral pigmentation raised significantly towards the end of the timespan covered by the study (P˂ 0.001). The majority of the examined studies reported that the prevalence of oral pigmentation is significantly higher in men, smokers or those exposed to secondhand smoke, people with fair skin, and who were affected by Yusho patients. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study show that the prevalence of oral pigmentation is high, with higher prevalence in men, smokers or those exposed to cigarette smoke, people with fair skin, and Yusho patients compared to other groups. It is recommended that. these findings be used in policy makers' decisions to deliver better health care.
