Lipid droplets (LDs) are storage organelles for neutral lipids which are critical for lipid homeostasis. Current knowledge of fungal LD biogenesis is largely limited to budding yeast, while LD regulation in multinucleated filamentous fungi which exhibit considerable metabolic activity remains unexplored. In this study, 19 LD-associated proteins were identified in the multinucleated species Aspergillus oryzae using a colocalization screening of a previously established enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) fusion library. Functional screening identified 12 lipid droplet-regulating (LDR) proteins whose loss of function resulted in irregular LD biogenesis, particularly in terms of LD number and size. Bioinformatics analysis, targeted mutagenesis, and microscopy revealed four LDR proteins that localize to LD via the putative amphipathic helices (AHs). Further analysis revealed that LdrA with an Opi1 domain is essential for cytoplasmic and nuclear LD biogenesis involving a novel AH. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the patterns of gene evolution were predominantly based on gene duplication. Our study identified a set of novel proteins involved in the regulation of LD biogenesis, providing unique molecular and evolutionary insights into fungal lipid storage.

BACKGROUND: Triamcinolone acetate injections are considered the first treatment option for keloids, but quite high proportions of keloids either do not respond to triamcinolone or develop recurrence. Beneficial effects of intralesional bleomycin have been recently shown in the treatment of keloids and hypertrophic scars. However, the efficacy of combination therapy using intralesional triamcinolone and bleomycin remains undetermined. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using bleomycin and triamcinolone mixture to treat refractory keloids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 33 patients with resistant keloids (including 8 men and 25 women) and a mean age of 36.52 years (age range of 18-65 years) were enrolled in this study. A mixture of bleomycin (1 u/cc) with triamcinolone acetonide (13.3 mg/cc) was injected intralesionally into the keloids every 4 to 6 weeks for a maximum of 6 cycles. The clinical improvement was evaluated using the Japan Scar Scale (JSS) and the physician's global assessment of the flattening of the lesions. Side effects were also noted and recorded. RESULTS: In all patients, the total JSS scores decreased significantly after treatment (2.33 ± 1.05), compared with baseline (11.61 ± 2.59), ( p < .001); 26 keloids (78.8%) showed an excellent response (75%-100% flattening), 7 keloids (21.2%) showed a fair response (25%-75% flattening), and 0 keloids (0%) showed a poor response (<25% flattening). Observed side effects were ulceration (33.3%), hyperpigmentation (33.3%), hypopigmentation (15.15%), secondary infection (33.3%), and telangiectasis (15.15%). CONCLUSION: The combined use of bleomycin and triamcinolone offers a promising treatment option for individuals who have not responded well to traditional therapies.

INTRODUCTION: With the expansion of the Affordable Care Act in 2014, there has been a growing interest in how the Medicaid population will affect postoperative outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Studies have shown that lower socioeconomic status, non-Caucasian race, women, cardiac and renal disorders, and younger age have been associated with increased lengths of stay (LOS) after TKA. The primary purpose of our study was to compare total complications and LOS among patients undergoing TKA who have cash, commercial, government, Medicaid, and Medicare insurances. METHODS: We queried a national, all-payer administrative claims database from 2016 to 2022 among patients undergoing TKA who had cash (n = 3,923), commercial (n = 966,169), government (n = 25,644), Medicaid (n = 56,184), and Medicare (n = 524,034) insurances. We compared and analyzed various baseline demographics, total complications, and LOS (< 1 day, 1 to 2 days, 3 to 4 days, and > 4 days), between the insurance types. RESULTS: Medicaid and Medicaid insurance types had patients who had the most comorbidities at baseline, including a comorbidity index > 3 (P < 0.0001), women, alcohol abuse, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, chronic kidney disease, and congestive heart disease (all P < 0.0001). In accounting for comorbidities, Medicaid was the biggest risk factor for total complications (P < 0.001) as well as increased LOS after TKA at 4 to 6 days, 7 to 9 days, and > 9 days (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Medicaid insurance is a risk factor for increased total complications and LOS following TKA. Appropriate preoperative and perioperative management of these patients is essential in order to mitigate the risk and burden on the healthcare system in this population.

INTRODUCTION: Studies are lacking in evaluating brain atrophy patterns in the Malaysian population. This study aimed to compare the patterns of cerebral atrophy and impaired glucose metabolism on 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging in various stages of AD in a Klang Valley population by using voxelbased morphometry in SPM12. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 18F-FDG PET/CT images of 14 healthy control (HC) subjects (MoCA score > 26 (mean+SD~ 26.93+0.92) with no clinical evidence of cognitive deficits or neurological disease) and 16 AD patients (MoCA ≤22 (mean+SD~18.6+9.28)) were pre-processed in SPM12 while using our developed Malaysian healthy control brain template. The AD patients were assessed for disease severity using ADAS-Cog neuropsychological test. KNE96 template was used for registration-induced deformation in comparison with the ICBM templates. All deformation fields were corrected using the Malaysian healthy control template. The images were then nonlinearly modified by DARTEL to segment grey matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to produce group-specific templates. Age, intracranial volume, MoCA score, and ADASCog score were used as variables in two sample t test between groups. The inference of our brain analysis was based on a corrected threshold of p<0.001 using Z-score threshold of 2.0, with a positive value above it as hypometabolic. The relationship between regional atrophy in GM and WM atrophy were analysed by comparing the means of cortical thinning between normal control and three AD stages in 15 clusters of ROI based on Z-score less than 2.0 as atrophied. RESULTS: One-way ANOVA indicated that the means were equal for TIV, F(2,11) = 1.310, p=0.309, GMV, F(2,11) = 0.923, p=0.426, WMV, F(2,11) = 0.158, p=0.856 and CSF, F(2,11) = 1.495 p=0.266. Pearson correlations of GM, WM and CSF volume between HC and AD groups indicated the presence of brain atrophy in GM (p=-0.610, p<0.0001), WM (p=-0.178, p=0.034) and TIV (p=-0.374, p=0.042) but showed increased CSF volume (p=0.602, p<0.0001). Voxels analysis of the 18FFDG PET template revealed that GM atrophy differs significantly between healthy control and AD (p<0.0001). Zscore comparisons in the region of GM & WM were shown to distinguish AD patients from healthy controls at the prefrontal cortex and parahippocampal gyrus. The atrophy rate within each ROI is significantly different between groups (c2=35.9021, df=3, p<0.0001), Wilcoxon method test showed statistically significant differences were observed between Moderate vs. Mild AD (p<0.0001), Moderate AD vs. healthy control (p=0.0005), Mild AD vs. HC (p=0.0372) and Severe AD vs. Moderate AD (p<0.0001). The highest atrophy rate within each ROI between the median values ranked as follows severe AD vs. HC (p<0.0001) > mild AD vs. HC (p=0.0091) > severe AD vs. moderate AD (p=0.0143). CONCLUSION: We recommend a reliable method in measuring the brain atrophy and locating the patterns of hypometabolism using a group-specific template registered to a quantitatively validated KNE96 group-specific template. The studied regions together with neuropsychological test approach is an effective method for the determination of AD severity in a Malaysian population.

When performing chromatography-mass spectrometry-based nontargeted metabolomics, or exposomics, one of the key steps in the analysis is to obtain MS1-based feature tables. Inapt parameter settings in feature detection will result in missing or wrong quantitative values and might ultimately lead to downstream incorrect biological interpretations. However, until recently, no strategies to assess the completeness and abundance accuracy of feature tables were available. Here, we show that mzRAPP enables the generation of benchmark peak lists by using an internal set of known molecules in the analyzed data set. Using the benchmark, the completeness and abundance accuracy of feature tables can be assessed in an automated pipeline. We demonstrate that our approach adds to other commonly applied quality assurance methods such as manual or automatized parameter optimization techniques or removal of false-positive signals. Moreover, we show that as few as 10 benchmark molecules can already allow for representative performance metrics to further improve quantitative biological understanding.

SUMMARY: Reliability assessment of automated pre-processing of liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry data presents a significant challenge. Here, we present a tool named mzRAPP, which generates and validates a benchmark from user-supplied information and later utilizes it for reliability assessment of data pre-processing. As a result, mzRAPP produces several performance metrics for different steps of the pre-processing workflow, supporting five of the most commonly used pre-processing tools. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: mzRAPP is implemented in R and can be downloaded from GitHub under GNU GPL v.3.0 licence. Coating defects often arise during application in the flash stage, which constitutes the ∼10 min interval immediately following film application when the solvent evaporates. Understanding the transient rheology and kinematics of a coating system is necessary to avoid defects such as sag, which results in undesirable appearance. A new technique named variable angle inspection microscopy (VAIM) aimed at measuring these phenomena was developed and is summarized herein. The essence of this new, non-invasive, rheological technique is the measurement of a flow field in response to a known gravitational stress. VAIM was used to measure the flow profile through a volume of a liquid thin film at an arbitrary orientation. Flow kinematics of the falling thin film was inferred from particle tracking measurements. Initial benchmarking measurements in the absence of drying tracked the velocity of silica probe particles in ∼140 µm thick films of known viscosity, much greater than water, at incline angles of 5° and 10°. Probe particles were tracked through the entire thickness of the film and at speeds as high as ∼100 µm/s. The sag flow field was well resolved in ∼10 µm thick cross sections, and in general the VAIM measurements were highly reproducible. Complementary profilometer measurements of film thinning were utilized to predict sag velocities with a known model. The model predictions showed good agreement with measurements, which validated the effectiveness of this new method in relating material properties and flow kinematics.

Facial pores, visible topographic change of skin representing enlarged openings of pilosebaceous follicles, are common aesthetic concern. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of polycaprolactone (PCL) filler on enlarged facial pores and skin texture improvement. A total of seven participants with enlarged facial pores were included in the study and underwent deep dermal injection of PCL based filler (Ellanse M, Sinclair Pharma; London, United Kingdom). Skin quality measurements including skin evenness, red areas, UV spots, wrinkles and pore numbers evaluated with an automated aesthetic camera (FotoFinder®, Teach Screen Systems software GmbH; Bad Birnbach, Germany) before and 3 months after the injection session. Adverse events during procedure were monitored and recorded. Subjects were asked to report any injection related side effects. The average size of enlarged pores was 33.51 ± 41 before treatment and 20.51 ± 35 after treatment. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The skin evenness, red areas, UV spots, and wrinkles showed no significant improvement after filler injection. No serious adverse events were reported at follow-up visit. The PCL based filler seems to be notably effective in improvement of enlarged facial pores especially in moderate to severe cases. However, further structured studies with larger sample size and control group could be more beneficial to elucidate the possible efficacy of PCL filler injection on the skin quality characteristics.

Despite the considerably high prevalence of cutaneous warts, no optimally effective and safe treatment is available. Leaves of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.; Arecaceae) have long been used in Iran's folk medicine as a remedy for warts. To assess the state-of-the-art evidence on using P. dactylifera L. for warts, we conducted a systematic review using CINAHL (via EBSCO), Embase, Medline (via PubMed), ProQuest, Scopus, and Web of Science. We conducted an open-label uncontrolled pilot clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a proprietary topical date palm leaf-based ointment for the treatment of various types of nongenital warts. This study consisted of an 8-week treatment phase and a 4-week follow-up phase. The assessed outcomes included complete clearance, patient satisfaction (on Likert scale), and the occurrence of any adverse effect. The systematic review demonstrated that the effects of date palm on warts have not been scientifically studied. Thirty patients entered the study with a mean age of 29.5 years (SD = 14.04); among which 17 were female and 13 were male. The patients presented diverse types of warts: verruca vulgaris 15 (50%), plantar 9 (30%), plane 2 (7%), periungual 2 (7%), and warts at multiple sites 2 (7%). In this trial, 19 patients (63.3%) experienced complete clearance and 5 patients (16.6%) experienced partial clearance. Eight patients (26.67%) dropped out during the study. 21 (70%) patients were very satisfied (score on Likert scale = 5) while 1 (3.3%) patient with partial clearance was somewhat satisfied (score on Likert scale = 4). No adverse effect was observed. The results of this pilot study indicate that the date palm leaf-based ointment is a promising treatment whose efficacy and safety should be further investigated in a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Exposome-Explorer (http://exposome-explorer.iarc.fr) is a database of dietary and pollutant biomarkers measured in population studies. In its first release, Exposome-Explorer contained comprehensive information on 692 biomarkers of dietary and pollution exposures extracted from the analysis of 480 peer-reviewed publications. Today, Exposome-Explorer has been further expanded and contains a total of 908 biomarkers. Two additional types of information have been collected. First, 185 candidate dietary biomarkers having 403 associations with food intake (as measured by metabolomic studies) have been identified and added. Second, 1356 associations between dietary biomarkers and cancer risk in epidemiological studies, which were collected from 313 publications, have also been added to the database. Classifications for both foods and compounds have been revised, and new classifications for biospecimens, analytical methods and cancers have been implemented. Finally, the web interface has been redesigned to significantly improve the user experience.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs), known as liquid biopsies, continue to be developed as diagnostic and prognostic markers for a wide variety of cancer indications, mainly due to their minimally invasive nature and ability to offer a wide range of phenotypic and genetic information. While liquid biopsies maintain significant promising benefits, there is still limited information regarding the kinetics of ctDNA and CTCs following radiation therapy which remains a vital treatment modality in head and neck cancers. This study aims to describe the kinetics of ctDNA and CTCs following radiation exposure in a preclinical rabbit model with VX2 induced buccal carcinoma. METHODS: Seven rabbits were inoculated with VX2 cells in the buccal mucosa and subjected to radiation. At selected time points, blood sampling was performed to monitor differing levels of ctDNA and CTC. Plasma ctDNA was measured with quantitative PCR for papillomavirus E6 while CTCs were quantified using an immunomagnetic nanoparticles within a microfluidic device. Comparisons of CTC detection with EpCAM compared to multiple surface markers (EGFR, HER2 and PSMA) was evaluated and correlated with the tumor size. RESULTS: Plasma ctDNA reflects the overall tumor burden within the animal model. Analysis of correlations between ctDNA with tumor and lymph node volumes showed a positive correlation (R = 0.452 and R = 0.433 [p < 0.05]), respectively. Over the course of treatment, ctDNA levels declined and quickly becomes undetectable following tumor eradication. While during the course of treatment, ctDNA levels were noted to rise particularly upon initiation of radiation following scheduled treatment breaks. Levels of CTCs were observed to increase 1 week following inoculation of tumor to the primary site. For CTC detection, the use of multiple surface markers showed a greater sensitivity when compared to detection using only EpCAM. Plasma CTC levels remained elevated following radiation therapy which may account for an increased shedding of CTCs following radiation. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the utility of ctDNA and CTCs detection in response to radiation treatment in a preclinical head and neck model, allowing for better understanding of liquid biopsy applications in both clinical practice and research development.

COVID-19 was first discovered in December 2019 and has continued to rapidly spread across countries worldwide infecting thousands and millions of people. The virus is deadly, and people who are suffering from prior illnesses or are older than the age of 60 are at a higher risk of mortality. Medicine and Healthcare industries have surged towards finding a cure, and different policies have been amended to mitigate the spread of the virus. While Machine Learning (ML) methods have been widely used in other domains, there is now a high demand for ML-aided diagnosis systems for screening, tracking, predicting the spread of COVID-19 and finding a cure against it. In this paper, we present a journey of what role ML has played so far in combating the virus, mainly looking at it from a screening, forecasting, and vaccine perspective. We present a comprehensive survey of the ML algorithms and models that can be used on this expedition and aid with battling the virus.

Seborrheic keratosis (SK) is a common benign skin epidermal lesion. Different treatment modalities have been proposed for this lesion. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of electrodesiccation, cryotherapy, CO2 laser, and Er:YAG laser in the treatment of SK. The study was carried out on 30 patients each with four similar facial SKs. Each lesion was assigned to be treated with cryotherapy, electrodesiccation, CO2 laser, and Er:YAG laser in a random fashion. Therapeutic results were evaluated 8 weeks after the interventions through clinical and dermatoscopic assessment. Treatment improvement criteria for each lesion included the texture of the lesion, severity of the pigmentation, and an overall assessment of the healing. The severity of burning, pain, erythema, and the duration of the erythema after the procedures were documented. A survey of the patients' satisfaction with the treatments was also performed. In the assessment of overall lesion healing by two dermatologists, the improvement rate was significantly higher in the CO2, Er:YAG lasers and electrodesiccation group compared to the cryotherapy (p < 0.001). However, the CO2 and Er:YAG laser and the electrodesiccation groups showed no significant difference (p > 0.05). Moreover, no significant difference was observed in posttreatment pigmentation and texture between the groups (p > 0.05). The pain and burning severity after the interventions were negligible in all four groups. Prolonged erythema was not observed in any of the cases; however, the duration of erythema in the Er:YAG laser group was significantly longer (p < 0.001). Patient satisfaction in the cryotherapy group was significantly lower than the other three groups (p < 0.001). The efficacy of treatment and patient satisfaction rate is highly comparable between electrodesiccation, CO2 laser, and Er:YAG laser but significantly higher than cryotherapy.

As the largest organ in the body, human skin is constantly exposed to harmful compounds existing in the surrounding environment as the first-line barrier. Studies have indicated that exposure to high concentrations of many environmental factors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, outdoor air pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), heavy metals, gaseous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxides (NOx ), sulfur oxide (SO2 ), ozone (O3 ), and indoor air pollutants (solid fuels consumption), might interrupt the skin's normal barrier function. Besides, the intensity of the pollutants and the length of exposure might be a contributing factor. Air pollutants are believed to induce or exacerbate a range of skin conditions, such as aging, inflammatory diseases (atopic dermatitis, cellulitis, and psoriasis), acne, hair loss, and even skin cancers (mainly melanoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma) through various mechanisms. The interaction between pollutants and the skin might differ based on each agent's particular characteristics. Also, damaging the skin barrier seems to be closely related to the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), induction of oxidative stress, activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and inflammatory cytokines. This article reviews recent studies on the correlation between air pollutants and skin diseases, along with related mechanisms.

RESUMO

Metabolomics encompasses the systematic identification and quantification of all metabolic products in the human body. This field could provide clinicians with novel sets of diagnostic biomarkers for disease states in addition to quantifying treatment response to medications at an individualized level. This literature review aims to highlight the technology underpinning metabolic profiling, identify potential applications of metabolomics in clinical practice, and discuss the translational challenges that the field faces. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE for primary and secondary research articles regarding clinical applications of metabolomics. Metabolic profiling can be performed using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance-based techniques using a variety of biological samples. This is carried out in vivo or in vitro following careful sample collection, preparation, and analysis. The potential clinical applications constitute disruptive innovations in their respective specialities, particularly oncology and metabolic medicine. Outstanding issues currently preventing widespread clinical use are scalability of data interpretation, standardization of sample handling practice, and e-infrastructure. Routine utilization of metabolomics at a patient and population level will constitute an integral part of future healthcare provision.

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of plantain herb (Plantago lanceolata L.) supplementation on growth, plasma metabolites, liver enzymatic activity, hormonal status, gastrointestinal parasites, and carcass characteristics of lambs. A total of 24 lambs, aged 6 months weighing 8.0 ± 0.5 kg were randomly allocated to one of two dietary treatments: (1) CL diet-roadside grass and concentrate mixture; (2) PL diet-CL diet + 5% fresh plantain supplementation on a DM basis. The PL diet group exhibited 23% higher (P = 0.01) average daily gain and 15% improved (P = 0.03) feed conversion efficiency. Circulating cholesterol concentrations were suppressed by 9% (P = 0.03), and liver enzyme activity was improved by 5-25% (P < 0.05) in the lamb fed PL diet, compared with CL diet only. The inclusion of plantain in the diet was highly effective at suppressing the parasites, Paramphistomum spp. (P = 0.003) and coccidial parasites (P = 0.04), but not stomach worms. Moreover, plantain supplementation increased growth hormone and insulin concentrations in plasma level, whereas decreased carcass fat by 32.7%. Therefore, supplementation of the lambs' diet with plantain showed some beneficial effects on productivity and parasitic infection, while it led to a leaner carcass.

RESUMO

Metabolic syndrome (MeTS) is a well-known health-related problem with several end-organ damages and the resulted side effects such as rising in the blood glucose and lipid and blood pressure. Although MeTS might show several skin symptoms such as acanthosis nigricans, skin tags, acne, and androgenic alopecia, it could also be implicated in the pathophysiology of numerous dermatologic disorders. Furthermore, some dermatologic drugs might be implicated in the incidence or exacerbation of MeTS. Consequently, MeTS and skin problem could interfere closely with each other and each one could predispose the patient to the other one and vice versa. Remembering these close relationships help us to have better therapeutic choices regarding each inflammatory skin conditions. Moreover, some of the skin symptoms should be followed cautiously to define the underlying MeTS.

MOTIVATION: Developing a robust and performant data analysis workflow that integrates all necessary components whilst still being able to scale over multiple compute nodes is a challenging task. We introduce a generic method based on the microservice architecture, where software tools are encapsulated as Docker containers that can be connected into scientific workflows and executed using the Kubernetes container orchestrator. RESULTS: We developed a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) which facilitates rapid integration of new tools and developing scalable and interoperable workflows for performing metabolomics data analysis. The environment can be launched on-demand on cloud resources and desktop computers. IT-expertise requirements on the user side are kept to a minimum, and workflows can be re-used effortlessly by any novice user. We validate our method in the field of metabolomics on two mass spectrometry, one nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and one fluxomics study. We showed that the method scales dynamically with increasing availability of computational resources. We demonstrated that the method facilitates interoperability using integration of the major software suites resulting in a turn-key workflow encompassing all steps for mass-spectrometry-based metabolomics including preprocessing, statistics and identification. Microservices is a generic methodology that can serve any scientific discipline and opens up for new types of large-scale integrative science. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: The PhenoMeNal consortium maintains a web portal (https://portal.phenomenal-h2020.eu) providing a GUI for launching the Virtual Research Environment. The risk of herpes zoster (HZ) increases with age and declining immune function. Increased oxidative stress and inflammatory conditions may cause a negative impact on the immune responses. The present study aimed to assess the levels of oxidative/inflammatory stress biomarkers in HZ patients compared with the controls. This case-control study included 43 HZ patients and 47 age-matched controls. Melatonin (MLT), Indole-dioxygenase (IDO), Interleukin-18 (IL-18), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), ferritin, C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and total homocysteine (tHcy) levels were measured and compared in both groups. The significant high levels of IDO, IL-18, IL-6, ferritin, hsCRP, and tHcy, as well as low levels of MLT were found in HZ patients compared with the controls (P < 0.001); these significant differences were also associated with rash and pain severity (P < 0.001). The final logistic regression model with the area under the curve (0.99; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98-1.00) showed the association of HZ with decreased level of MLT (odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% CI, 0.92-0.98; P = 0.007) and increased levels of tHcy (OR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.06-2.19; P = 0.02). The findings showed increased inflammation-associated oxidative stress in HZ patients. Elevated tHcy levels and reduced MLT levels may be associated with the manifestation of HZ. More investigations are required to confirm the results.

Effects of black gram (vigna mungo L.cv. Barimash 3) seed treatments with 400 torr dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) air plasma on seed surface morphology, seed germination, seedling growth and antioxidant enzyme activities in the roots, shoots and leaves were investigated. The plasma discharge voltage, frequency, electrode spacing, gas temperature and power were 5kV, 4.5kHz, 60mm, 310K and 45W, respectively. The seeds were treated for the duration ranging from 20 to 180 s. Seed germination rate, seedling growth, total chlorophyll content, total soluble protein and sugar concentrations in the seedlings grown from the treated seeds were found to increase 13.67%, 37.13%, 37.26%,53.60% and 51.71%, respectively, with respect to control. This study reveals that the DBD air plasma was involved in the enhancement of nitrogen complex in the seed coat of black gram which upregulated the protein through nitrogen conversion that was ultimately responsible for the increased seed germination and seedling growth of black gram.
