RESUMO

Lepidoptera is one of the most widespread insect orders and includes several agriculturally important insect species. Ecological success of the lepidopteran insects partly depends on their adaptive chemoreception tactics, which play an important role in the selection of hosts, egg-laying sites and mates. Members of the G-protein coupled receptor family, gustatory receptors (GRs), are an integral part of the Lepidoptera chemosensory machinery. They are expressed in chemosensory neurones and are known to detect different environmental stimuli. Here, we discuss various aspects of the lepidopteran GRs with an emphasis on their roles in different processes such as chemosensation, host selection and adaptation. Phylogenetic analyses have shown that the large diversity of GR genes may have been generated through gene duplication and positive selection events, which also show lineage- and tissue-specific expression. Moreover, lepidopteran GR proteins are diverse and demonstrate broad ligand selectivity for several molecules including sugars, deterrents, salts and CO2 . Binding of ligands to GRs generates multiple downstream changes at the cellular level, which are followed by changes in behaviour. GRs play a critical role in chemosensation and influence the insect's behaviour. Overall, insect GRs are potential targets in the design of effective insect control strategies.

Although much has been published in the radiology literature on the multitudinous conditions affecting the bony orbit, there has been relatively little on diseases confined to the globe itself. As current cross-sectional imaging techniques evolve, the globes can be visualized in ever greater detail, facilitating the recognition of even fairly subtle disease entities in this region. Indeed, the fact that high-resolution detailed images of this area are achievable without significant time or radiation penalty when evaluating surrounding structures means that incidental disease is not infrequently encountered. As such, common disease entities in this region are of interest to the general radiologist and the diagnosis of globe disease need not be the remit of experienced observers in specialist centres. At our institutions we have recently encountered a number of cases covering a broad spectrum of diagnoses including traumatic, neoplastic, iatrogenic, inflammatory, and infective aetiologies. The purpose of this review is to briefly revise the pertinent anatomical and physiological properties of the globe and to familiarize the reader with the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of a number of these disease states. The collection of abnormalities included is not intended to be exhaustive, merely representative, with the emphasis towards those more commonly encountered.

Alfuy (ALFV) is an attenuated flavivirus related to the Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV). We previously identified markers of attenuation in the envelope (E) protein of the prototype strain (ALFV3929), including the hinge region (E273-277) and lack of glycosylation at E154-156. To further determine the mechanisms of attenuation we assessed ALFV3929 binding to glycosaminoglycans (GAG), a known mechanism of flaviviruses attenuation. Indeed, ALFV3929 exhibited reduced binding to GAG-rich cells in the presence of heparin; however, low-passage ALFV isolates were relatively unaffected. Sequence comparisons between ALFV strains and structural modelling incriminated a positively-charged residue (K327) in ALFV3929 as a GAG-binding motif. Substitution of this residue to the corresponding uncharged residue in MVEV (L), using a previously described chimeric virus containing the prM & E genes of ALFV3929 in the backbone of MVEV (MVEV/ALFV-prME), confirmed a role for K327 in enhanced GAG binding. When the wild type residues at E327, E273-277 and E154-156 of ALFV3929 were replaced with the corresponding residues from virulent MVEV, it revealed each motif contributed to attenuation of ALFV3929, with the E327/E273-277 combination most dominant. These data demonstrate that attenuation of ALFV3929 is multifactorial and provide new insights for the rational design of attenuated flavivirus vaccines.

This study is primarily focused toward measuring the particle size distribution and chemical analysis of particulate matter that originates from combustion sources typically found in Indian urban homes. Four such sources were selected: cigarette, incense stick, mosquito coil, and dhoop, the latter being actually a thick form of incense stick. Altogether, seven of the most popular brands available in the Indian market were tested. Particle size distribution in the smoke was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer, using both long and nano forms of differential mobility analyzer (DMA), with readings averaged from four to six runs. The measurable particle size range of the nano DMA was 4.6 nm to 157.8 nm, whereas that of the long DMA was 15.7 nm to 637.8 nm. Therefore, readings obtained from the long and the nano DMA were compared for different brands as well as for different sources. An overlap was seen in the readings in the common range of measurement. The lowest value of peak concentration was seen for one brand of incense stick (0.9 x 10(6) cm(-3)), whereas the highest (7.1 x 10(6) cm(-3)) was seen for the dhoop. Generally, these sources showed a peak between 140 and 170 nm; however, 2 incense stick brands showed peaks at 79 nm and 89 nm. The dhoop showed results much different from the rest of the sources, with a mode at around 240 nm. Chemical analysis in terms of three heavy metals (cadmium, zinc, and lead) was performed using graphite tube atomizer and flame-atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Calculations were made to assess the expected cancer and noncancer risks, using published toxicity potentials for these three heavy metals. Our calculations revealed that all the sources showed lead concentrations much below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) threshold limit value (TLV) level. One of the two mosquito coil brands (M(2)) showed cadmium concentrations two times higher than the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal EPA) reference exposure level (REL). The latter also showed the highest carcinogenic risks of 350 people per million population. The amount of zinc obtained from the sources, however, was found to be quite below the standard limits, implying no risk in terms of zinc.

Catalase and proteolytic activity of the culures and morphological variants of Bacillus mesentericus fuscus, Bac. mesentericus vulgatus were studied. The variants were obtained as a result of prolonged cultivation of the stock strains in the potato mash under the layer of vaseline oil. The level of catalase activity varies in different morphological variants of the same culture, changes with age and depends on the storage conditions. The catalase activity in the rough, smooth and papillar variants that were freshly isolated from the potato mash was 1.5=2.5 times lower than that in the variants long kept on the agar medium. The quantitative indexes of the proteolytic activity of different variants also varied.

RESUMO

Oncocytomas are uncommon tumours that occur in a number of specific anatomical locations within the head, neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis. When occurring in the retroperitoneum, oncocytomas almost always arise from either the kidney or adrenal gland. With this case we present the imaging findings of an exceptionally rare retroperitoneal oncocytoma whose site of origin is neither the kidney nor adrenal gland.
