RESUMO

Climate change seriously impacts global agriculture, with rising temperatures directly affecting the yield. Vegetables are an essential part of daily human consumption and thus have importance among all agricultural crops. The human population is increasing daily, so there is a need for alternative ways which can be helpful in maximizing the harvestable yield of vegetables. The increase in temperature directly affects the plants' biochemical and molecular processes; having a significant impact on quality and yield. Breeding for climate-resilient crops with good yields takes a long time and lots of breeding efforts. However, with the advent of new omics technologies, such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, the efficiency and efficacy of unearthing information on pathways associated with high-temperature stress resilience has improved in many of the vegetable crops. Besides omics, the use of genomics-assisted breeding and new breeding approaches such as gene editing and speed breeding allow creation of modern vegetable cultivars that are more resilient to high temperatures. Collectively, these approaches will shorten the time to create and release novel vegetable varieties to meet growing demands for productivity and quality. This review discusses the effects of heat stress on vegetables and highlights recent research with a focus on how omics and genome editing can produce temperature-resilient vegetables more efficiently and faster.

Vertical stacking of two-dimensional materials into layered van der Waals heterostructures has recently been considered as a promising candidate for photocatalytic and optoelectronic devices because it can combine the advantages of the individual 2D materials. Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (JTMDCs) have emerged as an appealing photocatalytic material due to the desirable electronic properties. Hence, in this work, we systematically investigate the geometric features, electronic properties, charge density difference, work function, band alignment and photocatalytic properties of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures using first-principles calculations. Due to the different kinds of chalcogen atoms on both sides of JTMDC monolayers, two different possible stacking patterns of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures have been constructed and considered. We find that all these stacking patterns of ZnO-JTMDC heterostructures are dynamically and energetically feasible. Moreover, both ZnO-MoSSe and ZnO-WSSe heterostructures are indirect band gap semiconductors and present type-I and type-II band alignments for model-I and model-II, respectively. The Rashba spin polarization of the ZnO-WSSe heterostructure for model-I is greater than that in the others. Furthermore, valence (conduction) band edge potentials are calculated to understand the photocatalytic behavior of these systems. Energetically favorable band edge positions in ZnO-Janus heterostructures make them suitable for water splitting at zero pH. We found that the ZnO-Janus heterostructures are promising candidates for water splitting with conduction and valence band edges positioned just outside of the redox interval.

Plants offer a habitat for a range of interactions to occur among different stress factors. Epigenetics has become the most promising functional genomics tool, with huge potential for improving plant adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses. Advances in plant molecular biology have dramatically changed our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that control these interactions, and plant epigenetics has attracted great interest in this context. Accumulating literature substantiates the crucial role of epigenetics in the diversity of plant responses that can be harnessed to accelerate the progress of crop improvement. However, harnessing epigenetics to its full potential will require a thorough understanding of the epigenetic modifications and assessing the functional relevance of these variants. The modern technologies of profiling and engineering plants at genome-wide scale provide new horizons to elucidate how epigenetic modifications occur in plants in response to stress conditions. This review summarizes recent progress on understanding the epigenetic regulation of plant stress responses, methods to detect genome-wide epigenetic modifications, and disentangling their contributions to plant phenotypes from other sources of variations. Key epigenetic mechanisms underlying stress memory are highlighted. Linking plant response with the patterns of epigenetic variations would help devise breeding strategies for improving crop performance under stressed scenarios.

Achalasia is a relatively rare motor disorder characterized by esophageal aperistalsis and incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. In only 10% of patients, untreated or poorly managed achalasia can progress to esophageal dilation and eventual loss of total functionality resulting in a characteristic sigmoid dolichomegaesopahagus. In extremely rare instances, this sigmoid dolichomegaesopahagus can present clinically as acute airway obstruction or a fatal, life-threatening hemorrhage requiring immediate intervention. We present the case of a 65-year-old female with a past medical history of long-standing achalasia who had complaints of shortness of breath, chest pain, and two episodes of life-threatening hematemesis requiring a blood transfusion. An angiography illustrated significant distention of the esophagus occupying most of the right hemithorax and non-specific intraluminal fluid with a small amount of gas. Emergent esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed fibrosis and necrosis of the esophageal mucosa with food debris, suggesting that the bleeding was likely coming from an ulcer caused by pressure necrosis. The patient was hemodynamically unstable after the procedure and was transferred to another facility the next day for an esophagectomy. Patients with achalasia have an increased susceptibility to develop pressure ulcers due to increased shear force on the esophageal wall, increased moisture of the esophageal wall from prolonged contact of food boluses, and underlying malnutrition and weight loss from the indigestion of food causing atrophy of the mucosal barriers. The management of these ulcers is to treat and manage the underlying cause. Although there are no curative treatments for achalasia, symptomatic relief through both surgical and medical therapies are the mainstay of management, with an esophagectomy reserved for refractory cases or in patients who develop end-stage complications.

Ascariasis, which is caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is the most common gastrointestinal parasitic infection worldwide, with occasional invasion of the biliary tract leading to a variety of complications. In rare cases, pathogens carried on the surface of A. lumbricoides can complicate the course of the disease and lead to superimposed bacterial infections. In this article, we present a case of ascariasis-induced cholangitis complicated with Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteremia and multiple hepatic microabscesses. This article, which shows an association that was not reported in the literature before, aims to increase the awareness of clinicians for the possibility of the association between ascariasis and superimposed bacterial infection, specifically with K. pneumoniae.

RESUMO

Idiopathic spontaneous intraperitoneal hemorrhage (ISIH) or abdominal apoplexy is due to the tear of an intra-abdominal visceral vessel spontaneously where no cause can be identified. It is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition that generally shows up as a diagnostic dilemma as well as is related to formidable mortality. Among all the reported cases, the extemporaneous tear of short gastric arteries is extremely rare, but it has never been reported to present with massive gastrointestinal bleeding. We report a rare instance of idiopathic spontaneous intraperitoneal hematoma eroding the stomach wall, causing massive gastrointestinal bleeding.

In this work, we have studied new double perovskite materials, A2 1+B2+B3+X6 1-, where A2 1+ = Cs, B2+ = Li, Na, B3+ = Al, Ga, In, and X6 1-. We used the all electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW+lo) method within the framework of density functional theory. We used the mBJ approximation and WC-GGA as exchange-correlation functionals. We optimized the lattice constants with WC-GGA. Band structures were calculated with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Further, band structures for Cs2LiGaBr6 and Cs2NaGaBr6 were calculated with SOC + mBJ to correct the band gap values with respect to experimental value. We obtained direct bandgaps at Γ-point of 1.966 eV for Cs2LiGaBr6 and 1.762 eV for Cs2NaGaBr6, which are similar to the parent organic-inorganic perovskite (MAPI) CH3NH3PbI3 (E g = 1.6 eV). Total and partial density of states were analyzed to understand the orbital contribution of Cs, Na, Li, Ga and Br near the Fermi level. The optical properties in terms of real and imaginary ε, refractive index n, extinction coefficient k, optical conduction σ, absorption I, and reflectivity R were calculated. A study of the elastic and mechanical properties shows that both materials are thermodynamically stable. A stable, direct bandgap and a gap value close to those of MAPI make Cs2NaGaBr6 a great competitor in the Pb-free hybrid perovskite solar cells world.

The shortcomings in Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) and Hyperthermia for killing the tumor cell desired for the synthesis of a new kind of material suitable to be first used in BNCT and later on enable the conditions for Hyperthermia to destroy the tumor cell. The desire led to the synthesis of large band gap semiconductor nano-size Boron-10 enriched crystals of hexagonal boron nitride (10BNNCs). The contents of 10BNNCs are analyzed with the help of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and counter checked with Raman and XRD. The 10B-contents in 10BNNCs produce 7Li and 4He nuclei. A Part of the 7Li and 4He particles released in the cell is allowed to kill the tumor (via BNCT) whereas the rest produce electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor layer of 10BNNCs suggested to work in Hyperthermia with an externally applied field.

RESUMO

Cerebral aspergillosis has the tendency to occur in immunocompromised patients. Less commonly, immunocompetent individuals can be affected, with neuroimaging findings being difficult to interpret. The diagnosis necessitates imaging of the brain as well as the sinuses with biopsy and pathological confirmation. A surgical excision with aggressive antifungal agents are required for a proper management. This case report describes an immunocompetent patient with cerebral aspergillosis that presented radiologically as a suspicious mass to be diagnosed pathologically and excised surgically.

RESUMO

Leptospirosis, an infectious zoonosis, is common to tropical areas. The clinical presentation varies from flu-like symptoms to a serious presentation called Weil's syndrome. Fever and conjunctival suffusion are present in the majority of patients. This case report describes a resident of New York City who presented initially with gastroenteritis symptoms without fever or conjunctival suffusion to develop septic shock before being diagnosed with leptospirosis.

Early recognition of cardiac arrest has been linked traditionally to clinical signs and telemetry findings. Few case reports have presented normal telemetry findings in patients with cardiac arrest where a contrast enhanced CT scan of the chest was able to identify the diagnosis. The early recognition of a cardiac arrest whether by telemetry monitoring or CT scan is important to improve the clinical outcomes. This case report presents a patient who was hypertensive and unresponsive upon arrival to the emergency department. A chest CT scan to rule out aortic dissection showed no contrast in the pulmonary arteries, aorta, and the rest of the heart chambers although normal telemetry findings were present. Resuscitation was initiated, and patient survived with poor neurological recovery.

Spinal cord injuries are debilitating and life threatening. Paraplegia due to direct traumatic gunshot injury to the spinal cord is common. The most common cause of spinal cord injury is road traffic accidents. This is followed by spinal cord injury due to a fall from a height. Most of the spinal cord injuries due to gunshot wounds occur as a result of direct traumatic effects. We present a rare case of a 49-year-old male with trauma. He developed paraplegia after a gunshot wound injury to the neck and contusion to the spinal cord, with no direct trauma. Paraplegia due to direct gunshot injury can have many different outcomes. In our case, the patient was managed conservatively, and the outcome was favorable.

We report a first-principles study of structural and phase stability in three different structures of perovskite-types KMgH(3) according to H position. While electronic and optical properties were measured only for stable perovskite-type KMgH(3), our calculated structural parameters are found in good agreement with experiment and other theoretical results. We also study the electronic charge density space distribution contours in the (200), (101), and (100) crystallographic planes, which gives better insight picture of chemical bonding between K-H, K-Mg-H, and Mg-H. Moreover, we have calculated the electronic band structure dispersion, total, and partial density of electron states to study the band gap origin and the contribution of s-band of H, s and p-band of Mg in the valence band, and d-band of K in the conduction band. Furthermore, optical features such as dielectric functions, refractive indices, extinction coefficient, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficients, optical conductivities, and loss functions of stable KMgH(3) were calculated for photon energies up to 40 eV.
