RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of short purification cycles on the safety of naturally contaminated Mytilus galloprovincialis from harvesting areas of the Gulf of Olbia (Sardinia, Italy). Samples from ten batches of mussels were collected before, during and after purification treatment at two purification centres (A-B). All the samples were analysed for Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp according to Council Regulation (EC) 2285/2015. Detection and enumeration of Vibrio spp were performed according to previously published methods. Presumptive identification of Vibrio spp isolates were performed by means of conventional biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction. The presence of Hepatitis A virus was detected by nested reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Environmental parameters (water temperature and salinity) were also recorded. The results of Escherichia coli counts showed the overall efficacy of the short purification cycles; a purification cycle of 8 h led to a rapid decline in the concentration. The decrease in Escherichia coli counts does not correlate with the presence of naturally occurring vibrios, the decline of which occurs at an even slower rate. The average contamination levels for Vibrio spp before purification were 8.20 ±â€¯0.47 and 7.99 ±â€¯0.62 Log10 CFU/g in samples collected at purification plants A and B, respectively. After purification, the average contamination levels were 8.10 ±â€¯0.60 Log10 CFU/g at purification plant A and 7.85 ±â€¯0.57 Log10 CFU/g at purification plant B. The contaminated samples revealed the presence of Vibrio alginolyticus (n=21), Vibrio fluvialis (n=12), Vibrio cholerae (n=4), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (n=2) and Vibrio vulnificus (n=1). The Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates carried the tdh or the trh genes. None of the isolates was tdh+/trh+. Salmonella spp and Hepatitis A virus were not detected. The adoption of short purification cycles for Mytilus galloprovincialis in the presence of pathogenic vibrios might not be sufficient to guarantee the safety of consumers.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of H. pylori infection is high in underdeveloped countries and is associated with growth retardation. In the first half of the 20th century, Sardinia was an underdeveloped region; however, more recent development resulted in a decline in H. pylori infection. Because body height is correlated with health and nutritional status in childhood, the association among H. pylori infection and height was explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted involving patients undergoing endoscopy for dyspepsia from 2002 to 2012. H. pylori status was assessed by histology plus the rapid urease test or 13Carbon-urea breath test. RESULTS: Body height and H. pylori status were assessed in 5045 adult patients: 3257 (64.6%) were women. Patients born after 1950 showed a significant increase in height (average 3.22 cm) compared to patients born before 1950 (163.93 vs 160 cm; 95% confidence interval, CI = 2.74-3.70 cm) (p < .0001). H. pylori-infected patients were nearly 1 cm shorter than uninfected patients (95% CI = -1.35 to·-0.09 cm) (p = .012). The multivariate linear regression analysis showed male gender, birth cohort, and occupational categories to be strongly associated with height, while the weak effect of H. pylori infection disappeared. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate a strong secular trend related to body height in Sardinia with a minimal influence of H. pylori infection.

Background: In spite of the reduced exposure level, and its ban in numerous countries, compensation claims for asbestos-related diseases are far from decreasing. Methods: We used retrospective exposure assessment techniques to explore respiratory function and a computerized tomography (CT) scan in relation to past asbestos exposure in 115 male workers retired from an acrylic and polyester fiber plant. Based, on detailed information on exposure circumstances, we reconstructed a cumulative exposure estimate for each patient. Results: Time-weighted average exposure in our study population was 0.24 fibers/ml (95% confidence inteval (CI) 0.19-0.29), and the average cumulative exposure was 4.51 fibers/mL-years (95% CI 3.95-5.07). Exposure was elevated among maintenance workers, compared to other jobs (p = 0.00001). Respiratory function parameters did not vary in relation to the exposure estimates, nor to CT scan results. Risk of interstitial fibrosis showed a significant upward trend (Wald test for trend = 2.62, p = 0.009) with cumulative exposure to asbestos; risk associated with 5.26 fibers/mL-years or more, was 8-fold (95% CI 1.18-54.5). Conclusions: Our results suggest that a CT scan can detect pleuro-parenchymal lung alterations at asbestos exposure levels lower than previously thought, in absence of respiratory impairment. Further studies are required to validate our techniques of retrospective assessment of asbestos exposure.
