RESUMO

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease. The mechanism by which medium- and long-chain triglyceride (MCT/LCT) propofol plays a role in promoting NAFLD remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of MCT/LCT propofol on NAFLD progression and its mechanism of action. In Huh-7 and HepG3 cells induced by free fatty acids (FFA), propofol downregulated the expression levels of TG and lipid metabolism-related proteins by promoting the activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway and suppressing FFA-induced lipid metabolic disorders. In a high-fat diet (HFD) -induced NAFLD mouse model, we demonstrated that propofol significantly inhibited liver steatosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, and fibrosis. In conclusion, our results suggest that MCT/LCT propofol reduces liver lipid accumulation by activating the PI3K/AKT pathway and further suppressing the NAFLD process.

The performances of flexible piezoresistive sensors based on polymer nanocomposites are significantly affected by the environmental temperature; therefore, comprehensively investigating the temperature-dependent electromechanical response behaviors of conductive polymer nanocomposites is crucial for developing high-precision flexible piezoresistive sensors in a wide-temperature range. Herein, carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites widely used for flexible piezoresistive sensors were prepared, and then the temperature-dependent electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical properties of the optimized CNT/PDMS composite in the temperature range from -150 to 150 °C were systematically investigated. At a low temperature of -150 °C, the CNT/PDMS composite becomes brittle with a compressive modulus of ∼1.2 MPa and loses its elasticity and reversible sensing capability. At a high temperature (above 90 °C), the CNT/PDMS composite softens, shows a fluid-like mechanical property, and loses its reversible sensing capability. In the temperature range from -60 to 90 °C, the CNT/PDMS composite exhibits good elasticity and reversible sensing behaviors and its modulus, resistivity, and sensing sensitivity decrease with an increasing temperature. At room temperature (30 °C), the CNT/PDMS composite exhibits better mechanical and piezoresistive stability than those at low and high temperatures. Given that environmental temperature changes have significant effects on the sensing performances of conductive polymer composites, the effect of ambient temperature changes must be considered when flexible piezoresistive sensors are designed and fabricated.

Neocortical vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-expressing (VIP+) interneurons display highly diverse morpho-electrophysiological and molecular properties. To begin to understand the function of VIP+ interneurons in cortical circuits, they must be clearly and comprehensively classified into distinct subpopulations based on specific molecular markers. Here, we utilized patch-clamp RT-PCR (Patch-PCR) to simultaneously obtain the morpho-electric properties and mRNA profiles of 155 VIP+ interneurons in layers 2 and 3 (L2/3) of the mouse somatosensory cortex. Using an unsupervised clustering method, we identified 3 electrophysiological types (E-types) and 2 morphological types (M-types) of VIP+ interneurons. Joint clustering based on the combined electrophysiological and morphological features resulted in 3 morpho-electric types (ME-types). More importantly, we found these 3 ME-types expressed distinct marker genes: ~94% of Sncg+ cells were ME-type 1, 100% of Mybpc1+ cells were ME-type 2, and ~78% of Parm1+ were ME-type 3. By clarifying the properties of subpopulations of cortical L2/3 VIP+ interneurons, this study establishes a basis for future investigations aiming to elucidate their physiological roles.

PURPOSE: Radiology instruction focuses on cultivating medical students' diagnostic thinking skills and practical competence, and lecture-based learning (LBL) is the most commonly used teaching approach. While fact-based, this type of traditional instruction is often non-engaging, leading to a shift toward student-centered models, one of which is the flipped classroom (FC). However, studies involving a comprehensive evaluation of students' experiences using the FC approach and its effects on their learning are lacking. Therefore, this study analyzed the teaching efficacy of the FC approach based on data of large groups of radiology students, accumulated over time. METHODS: Data from 636 medical radiology students taught using the FC and LBL models from 2012 to 2021 were retrospectively collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The test scores of the FC group were significantly higher than those of the LBL group, and improvements in learning initiative and learning ability were notably higher in the FC than in the LBL group. The two groups showed no significant difference in the critical thinking disposition indicator, and the proportion of students with positive critical thinking tendencies was higher in the FC than in the LBL group. The academic and social self-perception scores of the FC group were significantly higher than those of the LBL group, and there was a significant difference in Kolb's learning style. CONCLUSIONS: Based on evidence of completing pre-, in-, and after-class work, the FC approach improved students' academic performance, learning initiative, diagnostic ability, and satisfaction with learning and the teaching institution. Our findings suggest that FC instruction promotes students' assimilation and convergence of learning styles, and cultivates positive critical thinking.

Adolescent health research with biomarker data collection is limited due to difficulties in recruiting and engaging this age group. Thus, successful recruitment, engagement, and retention of adolescents in translational research are necessary to elucidate factors influencing mental and physical health conditions, uncover novel biomarkers, and expand prevention and treatment options. This paper describes strategies for effective recruitment and retention of adolescents in a research study, using a project examining depressive symptoms and the microbiome to illustrate these approaches. This cross-sectional study collected electronic self-reported survey data and self-collected biospecimens (stool and salivary samples) from adolescents 13-19 years old. All but two participants completed the questionnaires, with few missing responses. 94% provided at least one salivary sample and 89% supplied a stool sample. Participants were able to adhere to the study instructions. Using a participant-centered approach, our study successfully recruited and engaged the targeted 90 participants in self-collection of electronic survey data and biospecimens. Successful strategies of recruitment and retention included: 1) on-site clinic recruitment by research team, 2) active involvement of parents as appropriate, 3) use of electronic surveys and self-collection of biospecimens to foster control and ease of participation while addressing privacy concerns, 4) noninvasive collection of data on biospecimen, 5) frequent texting to communicate with participants, 6) flexibility in the pickup and transferring of biospecimens to accommodate adolescent schedules, 7) developmentally appropriate research, 8) participant reimbursement, and 9) sensitivity toward discussing stool sample materials. As a result of these strategies, adolescent participation in the research proved feasible.

As the key component of host innate antiviral immunity, type I interferons (IFN-Is) exert multiple antiviral effects by inducing hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes. However, the precise mechanism involved in host sensing of IFN-I signaling priming is particularly complex and remains incompletely resolved. This research identified F-box protein 11 (FBXO11), a component of the E3-ubiquitin ligase SKP/Cullin/F-box complex, acted as an important regulator of IFN-I signaling priming and antiviral process against several RNA/DNA viruses. FBXO11 functioned as an essential enhancer of IFN-I signaling by promoting the phosphorylation of TBK1 and IRF3. Mechanistically, FBXO11 facilitated the assembly of TRAF3-TBK1-IRF3 complex by mediating the K63 ubiquitination of TRAF3 in a NEDD8-dependent manner to amplify the activation of IFN-I signaling. Consistently, the NEDD8-activating enzyme inhibitor MLN4921 could act as a blocker for FBXO11-TRAF3-IFN-I axis of signaling. More significantly, examination of clinical samples of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and public transcriptome database of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2-, HBV-, and hepatitis C virus-infected human samples revealed that FBXO11 expression was positively correlated with the stage of disease course. Taken together, these findings suggest that FBXO11 is an amplifier of antiviral immune responses and might serve as a potential therapeutic target for a number of different viral diseases.

Multi-carrier continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is considered to be a promising way to boost the secret key rate (SKR) over the existing single-carrier CV-QKD scheme. However, the extra excess noise induced in the imperfect multi-carrier quantum state preparation process of N subcarriers will limit the performance of the system. Here, a systematic modulation noise model is proposed for the multi-carrier CV-QKD based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Subsequently, the performance of multi-carrier CV-QKD with arbitrary modulation protocol (e.g. QPSK, 256QAM and Gaussian modulation protocol) can be quantitatively evaluated by combining the security analysis method of the single-carrier CV-QKD. Under practical system parameters, the simulation results show that the SKR of the multi-carrier CV-QKD can still be significantly improved by increasing the carrier number N even with imperfect practical modulations. Specifically, the total SKR of multi-carrier CV-QKD can be optimized by carefully choosing N. The proposed model provides a feasible theoretical framework for the future multi-carrier CV-QKD experimental implementation.

We experimentally demonstrated a sub-Mbps key rate Gaussian-modulated coherent-state (GMCS) continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) over a 100-km transmission distance. To efficiently control the excess noise, the quantum signal and the pilot tone are co-transmitted in the fiber channel based on wideband frequency and polarization multiplexing methods. Furthermore, a high-accuracy data-assisted time domain equalization algorithm is carefully designed to compensate the phase noise and polarization variation in low signal-to-noise ratio. The asymptotic secure key rate (SKR) of the demonstrated CV-QKD is experimentally calculated to be 7.55 Mbps, 1.87 Mbps, and 0.51 Mbps over a transmission distance of 50 km, 75 km, and 100 km, respectively. The experimentally demonstrated that the CV-QKD system significantly improves the transmission distance and SKR compared to the state-of-art GMCS CV-QKD experimental results, and shows the potential for long-distance and high-speed secure quantum key distribution.

Sulfatides are unique sphingolipids present in the serum and the plasma membrane. Sulfatides exert important functions in a number of systems in the human body, including the nervous, immune, cardiovascular, and coagulation systems.Furthermore, it is closely related to tumor occurrence, development, and metastasis. Peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor α (PPARα) is a class of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors, which is a potential regulator of sulfatides. This review not only summarizes the current knowledge on the physiological functions of sulfatides in various systems, but also discusses the possible PPARα regulatory mechanisms in sulfatide metabolism and functions. The results of the present analysis provide deep insights and further novel ideas for expanding the research on the physiological function and clinical application of sulfatides.

Fish, as top predators in aquatic ecosystems, play an important role in maintaining the structure and functioning of these ecosystems, making their diversity a topic of great interest. This study focused on the Yangtze River Basin to investigate the fish community structure and diversity using environmental DNA (eDNA) technology. The results showed that a total of 71616 fish operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 90 fish belonging to 23 families were detected, with the Cyprinidae family being the dominant group, followed by the Cobitidae, Amblycipitidae, etc. Compared to historical traditional morphological fish surveys, the quantity of fish detected using eDNA was relatively low, but the overall distribution pattern of fish communities was generally consistent. The highest fish Shannon-Wiener diversity index in the Yangtze River Basin sites reaches 2.60 with an average value of 1.25. The fish diversity index was higher in the downstream compared to the middle and upstream regions, and there were significant differences among different sampling sites. Significant environmental factors influencing α-diversity included chlorophyll-a, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, and elevation. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis revealed significant differences in fish community composition between the upstream and middle/lower reaches of the Yangtze River, while the composition of fish communities in the middle and lower reaches was more similar. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that total organic carbon (TOC) was positively correlated with fish community distribution in the upstream, while water temperature and NO3-N were negatively correlated with fish distribution in the upstream. NH3-N and CODMn were negatively correlated with fish distribution in the middle and downstream regions, indicating a relatively severe water pollution in these areas. Additionally, fish communities in the Yangtze River displayed a typical distance decay pattern.

Context: In recent years, the number of women with unexplained infertility has increased, and clinicians consider poor endometrial receptivity (ER) to be one of the main reasons. ER can have great predictive value for in-vitro fertilization embryo transfer (IVF-ET)-induced pregnancy. Objective: The study intended to investigate the predictive value of ER-endometrial thickness (EMT) and type and hemodynamic parameters-using color-doppler ultrasound on the pregnancy outcome of IVF-ET for women of different ages. Design: The research team performed a prospective controlled study. Setting: The study took place at the Department of Reproductive Medicine at Hebei Reproductive Hospital in Shijiazhuang, China. Participants: Participants were 841 infertile patients undergoing IVF-ET treatment at the hospital between March 01, 2018 and December 30, 2018. The research team divided participants into two groups: (1) participants diagnosed as having a clinical pregnancy after IVF-ET became the pregnancy group, with 439 participants, and (2) participants who didn't become pregnant became the nonpregnancy group, with 402 participants. Outcome Measures: The research team: (1) measured EMT, (2) determined endometrium types, (3) classified the intimal and subintimal blood flow, and (4) determined the hemodynamic parameters of the endometrium and subendometrium. The team also measured: (1) the systolic blood flow velocity (VS), (2) diastolic blood flow velocity (VD), and (3) average blood flow velocity (VM) three times and recorded the average value. Results: Statistically significant differences existed in the pregnancy and implantation rates among the different age groups for the groups with EMTs of <8 mm and 8-13 mm (P < .05). The results were similar in the endometrial Type A and endometrial Type B groups as well as between the endometrial blood flow Type 1 and Type 2 groups (P < .05). The distribution of endometrial blood flow types was significantly different between the groups (P = .002). In addition, statistically significant differences existed in the implantation rates between the <30 years and 30-34 groups in different blood-flow-type groups (P < .05). Based on the results of the ROC curve, high-quality embryos (0.566, 95%CI: 0.527-0.605) and endometrial blood flow types (0.554, 95%CI: 0.515-0.593) could not predict clinical pregnancy. Conclusions: The pregnancy and implantation rates increased between the <30 and 30-34 age groups and them decreased between the age groups as age increased. EMT, endometrial type, and blood flow type can be valuable parameters in predicting the implantation and pregnancy rates of patients of different ages.

Controlling the tree size of fruit species such as peach can reduce the amount of labor and input needed for orchard management. The phytohormone gibberellin (GA) positively regulates tree size by inducing degradation of the GA signaling repressor DELLA. The N-terminal DELLA domain in this protein is critical for its GA-dependent interaction with the GA receptor GID1 and the resulting degradation of the DELLA protein, which allows for growth-promoting GA signaling. In this study, a DELLA family member, PpeDGYLA, contains a DELLA domain but has amino acid changes in three conserved motifs (DELLA into DGYLA, LEQLE into LERLE, and TVHYNP into AVLYNP). In the absence or presence of GA3, the PpeDGYLA protein did not interact with PpeGID1c and was stable in 35S-PpeDGYLA peach transgenic callus. The overexpression of PpeDGYLA in both polar and Arabidopsis showed an extremely dwarfed phenotype, and these transgenic plants were insensitive to GA3 treatment. PpeDGYLA could interact with PpeARF6-1 and -2, supposed growth-promoting factors. It is suggested that the changes in the DELLA domain of PpeDGYLA may, to some extent, account for the severe dwarf phenotype of poplar and Arabidopsis transgenic plants. In addition, our study showed that the DELLA family contained three clades (DELLA-like, DELLA, and DGLLA). PpeDGYLA clustered into the DGLLA clade and was expressed in all of the analyzed tissues. These results lay the foundation for the further study of the repression of tree size by PpeDGYLA.

Adventitious root formation is a bottleneck for the mass propagation of microshoots, and nitrate is an essential nutrient regulating adventitious roots. WOX11 is involved in adventitious rooting. But the crosstalk between nitrate and WOX11 is completely unknown. In this study, MdWOX11 transgenic apple microshoots were grown on different nitrate treatments. Low nitrate promotes adventitious rooting in overexpressed microshoots more than wild type and RNA interference microshoots. In contrast, medium nitrate significantly inhibits it in overexpressed and RNA interference microshoots compared with wild type microshoots. Stem anatomy indicated that medium nitrate delays root primordia formation compared with low nitrate. Methyl jasmonate and zeatin riboside played positive and negative roles in adventitious rooting, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis was conducted to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the phenotypes better. Hormone signalling, sugar metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, cell cycle and root development pathway-related genes were selected for their potential involvement in adventitious rooting. Results suggest that nitrogen signaling and MdWOX11 expression affect cytokinin accumulation and response to cytokinin through regulating the expression of genes related to cytokinin synthesis and transduction pathways, which ultimately affect adventitious rooting. This study provided important insights into the complicated networks involved in adventitious rooting in transgenic microshoots under nitrate treatments.

A high-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system based on high-order discrete modulation is experimentally investigated. With the help of the novel system scheme, effective digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and advanced analytical security proof methods, the transmission results of 5.059 km, 10.314 km, 24.490 km, and 50.592 km are achieved for 1 GBaud optimized quantum signals. Correspondingly, the asymptotic secret key rates (SKRs) are 292.185 Mbps, 156.246 Mbps, 50.491 Mbps, and 7.495 Mbps for discrete Gaussian (DG) 64QAM, and 328.297 Mbps, 176.089 Mbps, 51.304 Mbps, and 9.193 Mbps for DG 256QAM, respectively. Under the same parameters, the achieved SKRs of DG 256QAM is almost same as ideal Gaussian modulation. In this case, the demonstrated high-rate discrete-modulated CV-QKD system has the application potential for high-speed security communication under tens of kilometers.

BACKGROUND: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (HITT) may result in microsurgical flap failure. This study investigated the outcomes of HITT in primary lymphedema patients who underwent vascularized lymph node transplantations (VLNT). METHODS: Between 2012 and 2019, primary lymphedema patients who underwent VLNTs were retrospectively included. The 4Ts score was used to categorize patients into HITT (scores of 5-7) and non-HITT (score < 5) groups. Outcome evaluations included the re-exploration rate, success rate, circumferential differences, cellulitis episodes, and Lymphedema Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (LYMQoL) scores. RESULTS: Twenty-six and 15 patients with 31 and 16 VLNTs were included in the HITT and non-HITT groups, respectively. The HITT group had significantly greater first, second and third re-exploration rates of 38.7% (12/31), 25.7% (8/31), and 6.5% (2/31) than the non-HITT group (6.3%, 0%, and 0%, all p < 0.01), respectively. The platelet counts significantly decreased by 21.0% in the HITT group compared with the non-HITT group (14%) on postoperative Day one (p < 0.01) with a cutoff value of 17% and AUC = 0.88. CONCLUSIONS: HITT may cause a high re-exploration rate of VLNTs in primary lymphedema patients. The 17% reduction in platelets on postoperative day one was an early sign for detecting HITT.

Purpose: When dexmedetomidine is used in elderly patients, high incidence of bradycardia is reported. Given age-related physiological changes in this population, it is necessary to know the safety margin between the loading dose of dexmedetomidine and bradycardia. Therefore, we conducted this study to investigate the median effective dose (ED50) of dexmedetomidine causing bradycardia in elderly patients. Methods: Thirty patients with ages over 65 years undergoing elective general surgery were enrolled. The Dixon and Massay sequential method were applied to determine the loading dose of dexmedetomidine, starting from 1.0 µg/kg. The dose for the follow-up subjects increased or decreased according to the geometric sequence with the common ratio 1.2, based on the 'negative' or 'positive' response of the previous subject. Positive mean that the subject developed bradycardia during the test. Hemodynamic data including heart rate and systolic blood pressure were recorded. The level of sedation was assessed with the Observer Assessment of Alertness and Sedation Scale (OAA/S). Results: Bradycardia occurred in 13 patients (43.3%). The ED50 of dexmedetomidine causing bradycardia was 1.97 µg/kg (95% CI, 1.53-2.53 µg/kg). OAA/S scores at 10 min after the beginning of the dexmedetomidine infusion and 10 min after the termination of dexmedetomidine administration showed no significant differences between the positive and negative groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The ED50 of dexmedetomidine causing bradycardia in our cohort was higher than clinical recommended dose. A higher loading dose appears acceptable for a faster onset of sedation under careful hemodynamic monitoring. Trial registration: ChiCTR 15006368.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have implied the incidence of diaphragmatic hernia (DH) after spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) with unknown mechanisms. The current study aimed to identify whether there is an association between the DH and SP. METHODS: We selected 46,897 patients with SP (SP cohort) and 46,897 without SP (non-SP matched cohort) from the National Health Insurance Database. Patients were frequency matched according to age, sex, and index year. The incidence of DH and its association with SP were assessed after stratifying different characteristics and comorbidities. Statistical analysis including chi-square test, t-test, cox proportional hazard model, and Kaplan-Meier method were used. RESULTS: The results suggested there were significant associations between SP and DH, especially in the subgroup of patients with older age (aged 40-64 years: 2.61-fold in adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27-5.36; aged > 65 years: 1.97-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.43-2.71), male sex (2.11-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.56-2.85), hypertension (2.05-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.30-3.23), diabetes mellitus (2.58-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.37-4.86), and smoking-related disease (1.86-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.28-2.71). The SP cohort has significantly correlated with DH within 5-year follow-up (< 2 years: 3.22-fold in aHR, 95% CI 2.10-4.94; 2-5 years: 1.70-fold in aHR, 95% CI 1.05-2.75). CONCLUSIONS: The SP cohort had a higher incidence of DH than the non-SP matched cohort. A prospective study of indications based on the findings of the current research should be performed.

BACKGROUND: The combined pedicled pectoralis major-latissimus dorsi (PM-LD) and free extended anterolateral thigh (ALT) myocutaneous flaps provide well-vascularized tissues for extensive sternal wound reconstruction. However, the outcomes and postoperative complications between the two surgical techniques are different. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of these two reconstructive options. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study was conducted between August 2011 and May 2019. Forty-four patients diagnosed with deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) and presented with grade four complications (sternal instability and necrotic bone tissue) were enrolled. Two reconstructive strategies, namely, combined pedicled PM-LD (n = 24) and free extended ALT (n = 20) myocutaneous flaps, were used according to the patients' hemodynamics. Data including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), hospital stay, follow-up, defect/flap size, number of surgical procedures before reconstruction, duration from the last debridement to flap coverage, comorbidities, and postoperative complications, were obtained for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean defect size in the combined PM-LD myocutaneous flap group was 188.4 (5*17-10*23) cm2 , and the mean flap size was 150.0 (8*12-15*15) cm2 and 205.0 (8*15-10*25) cm2 in PM and LD flap, respectively. The mean defect size in the free extended ALT myocutaneus flap group was 202.5 (6*16-10*21) cm2 , and the mean flap size was 285.2 (9*30-12*25) cm2 . No significant differences were observed between the free extended ALT and the combined pedicled PM-LD myocutaneous flaps in relation to age, gender, BMI, hospital days, follow-up, defect size, preoperative procedures, and comorbidities, except for the average operative time (443.2 ± 31.2 vs. 321.3 ± 54.3 mins, p = .048). The combined pedicled PM-LD myocutaneous flap had significantly more donor site complications, including seroma (21% vs. 0%, p = .030), bilateral nipple-areolar complex asymmetry (100% vs. 0%, p < .0001), and skin graft loss with infection (33% vs. 0%; p = .044) than the free extended ALT myocutaneous flap. CONCLUSION: The free extended ALT and the combined pedicled PM-LD myocutaneous flaps were both feasible and effective options for sternal wound reconstruction. Our findings suggested that the free extended ALT myocutaneous flap may be a better alternative for a comprehensive and extensive reconstruction of sternal wounds. Further studies based on these findings can be conducted.

To verify the performance of the high-resolution fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor carried by the Xinzhou 60 remote-sensing aircraft, we used corner reflectors to calibrate the acquired data. The target mechanism in high-resolution SAR images is more complex than it is in low-resolution SAR images, the impact of the point target pointing error on the calibration results is more obvious, and the target echo signal of high-resolution images is more easily affected by speckle noise; thus, more accurate extraction of the point target position and the response energy is required. To solve this problem, this paper introduces image context information and proposes a method to precisely determine the integration region of the corner reflector using sliding windows based on the integral method. The validation indicates that the fully polarimetric SAR sensor on the Xinzhou 60 remote-sensing aircraft can accurately reflect the radiometric characteristics of the ground features and that the integral method can obtain more stable results than the peak method. The sliding window allows the position of the point target to be determined more accurately, and the response energy extracted from the image via the integral method is closer to the theoretical value, which means that the high-resolution SAR system can achieve a higher radiometric calibration accuracy. Additionally, cross-validation reveals that the airborne SAR images have similar quality levels to Sentinel-1A and Gaofen-3 images.

Adventitious root (AR) formation is a bottleneck for the mass propagation of apple rootstocks, and water stress severely restricts it. Different hormones and sugar signaling pathways in apple clones determine AR formation under water stress, but these are not entirely understood. To identify them, GL-3 stem cuttings were cultured on polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment. The AR formation was dramatically decreased compared with the PEG-free control (CK) cuttings by increasing the endogenous contents of abscisic acid (ABA), zeatin riboside (ZR), and methyl jasmonate (JA-me) and reducing the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid 3 (GA3) contents. We performed a transcriptomic analysis to identify the responses behind the phenotype. A total of 3204 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between CK and PEG, with 1702 upregulated and 1502 downregulated genes. Investigation revealed that approximately 312 DEGs were strongly enriched in hormone signaling, sugar metabolism, root development, and cell cycle-related pathways. Thus, they were selected for their possible involvement in adventitious rooting. However, the higher accumulation of ABA, ZR, and JA-me contents and the upregulation of their related genes, as well as the downregulation of sugar metabolism-related genes, lead to the inhibition of ARs. These results indicate that AR formation is a complicated biological process chiefly influenced by multiple hormonal signaling pathways and sugar metabolism. This is the first study to demonstrate how PEG inhibits AR formation in apple plants.
