RESUMO

Background Microwave ablation (MWA) is currently under preliminary investigation for the treatment of multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and has shown promising treatment efficacy. Compared with surgical resection (SR), MWA is minimally invasive and could preserve thyroid function. However, a comparative analysis between MWA and SR is warranted to draw definitive conclusions. Purpose To compare MWA and SR for preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC in terms of overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival rates and complication rates. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, 775 patients with preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC treated with MWA or SR across 10 centers between May 2015 and December 2021 were included. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed for patients in the MWA and SR groups, followed by comparisons between the two groups. The primary outcomes were overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates and complication rates. Results After PSM, 229 patients (median age, 44 years [IQR 36.5-50.5 years]; 179 female) in the MWA group and 453 patients (median age, 45 years [IQR 37-53 years]; 367 female) in the SR group were observed for a median of 20 months (range, 12-74 months) and 26 months (range, 12-64 months), respectively. MWA resulted in less blood loss, shorter incision length, and shorter procedure and hospitalization durations (all P < .001). There was no evidence of differences in overall and 1-, 3-, or 5-year PFS rates (all P > .05) between MWA and SR (5-year rate, 77.2% vs 83.1%; P = .36) groups. Permanent hoarseness (2.2%, P = .05) and hypoparathyroidism (4.0%, P = .005) were encountered only in the SR group. Conclusion There was no evidence of a significant difference in PFS rates between MWA and SR for US-detected multifocal T1N0M0 PTC, and MWA resulted in fewer complications. Therefore, MWA is a feasible option for selected patients with multifocal T1N0M0 PTC. © RSNA, 2024 Supplemental material is available for this article. It is extremely challenging to rapidly and accurately extract target echo photon signals from massive photon point clouds with strong background noise without any prior geographic information. Herein, we propose a fast surface detection method realized by combining the improved density-dimension algorithm (DDA) and Kalman filtering (KF), termed the DDA-KF algorithm, for photon signals with a high background noise rate (BNR) to improve the extraction of surface photon signals from spacecraft platforms. The results showed that the algorithm exhibited good adaptability to strong background noise and terrain slope variations, and had real-time processing capabilities for massive photon point clouds in large-scale detection range without prior altitude information of target. Our research provides a practical technical solution for single-photon lidar applications in deep space navigation and can help improve the performance in environments characterized by strong background noise.

RESUMO

A near-infrared single-photon lidar system, equipped with a 64×64 resolution array and a Risley prism scanner, has been engineered for daytime long-range and high-resolution 3D imaging. The system's detector, leveraging Geiger-mode InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiode technology, attains a single-photon detection efficiency of over 15% at the lidar's 1064 nm wavelength. This efficiency, in tandem with a narrow pulsed laser that boasts a single-pulse energy of 0.5 mJ, facilitates 3D imaging capabilities for distances reaching approximately 6 kilometers. The Risley scanner, composing two counter-rotating wedge prisms, is designed to perform scanning measurements across a 6-degree circular field-of-view. Precision calibration of the scanning angle and the beam's absolute direction was achieved using a precision dual-axis turntable and a collimator, culminating in 3D imaging with an exceptional scanning resolution of 28 arcseconds. Additionally, this work has developed a novel spatial domain local statistical filtering framework, specifically designed to separate daytime background noise photons from the signal photons, enhancing the system's imaging efficacy in varied lighting conditions. This paper showcases the advantages of array-based single-photon lidar image-side scanning technology in simultaneously achieving high resolution, a wide field-of-view, and extended detection range.

The rebound dynamics of double droplets impacting an inclined superhydrophobic surface decorated with macro-ridges are investigated via lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations. Four rebound regions are identified, that is, the no-coalescence-rebound (NCR), the partial-coalescence-rebound of the middle part bounces first (PCR-M), and the side part bounces first (PCR-S), as well as the complete-coalescence-rebound (CCR). The occurrence of the rebound regions strongly depends on the droplet arrangement, the center-to-center distance of the droplets, and the Weber number. Furthermore, the contact time is closely related to the rebound regions. The PCR-M region can significantly reduce the contact time because the energy dissipation in this region may decrease which can promote the rebound dynamic. Intriguingly, the contact time is also affected by the droplet arrangement; i.e., droplets arranged parallel to the ridge dramatically shorten the contact time since this arrangement increases the asymmetry of the liquid film. Therefore, for multidrop impact, the contact time can be effectively manipulated by changing the rebound region and the droplet arrangement. This work focuses on elucidating the wetting behaviors, rebound regions, and contact time of the multiple-droplet impacting an inclined superhydrophobic surface decorated with macro-ridges.

Reducing the contact time of droplet impacts on surfaces is crucial for various applications including corrosion prevention and anti-icing. This study aims to explore a novel strategy that greatly reduces contact time using a superhydrophobic mesh surface with multiple sets of mutually perpendicular ridges while minimizing the influence of the impacting location. The effects of the impact Weber numbers and ridge spacing on the characteristics of the impact dynamics and contact time are studied experimentally. The experimental results reveal that, for the droplet impact on mesh surfaces, ridges can segment the liquid film into independently multiple-retracting liquid subunits. The retracted subunits provide the upward driving force, which may promote the splashing or pancake bouncing of droplets. At this point, the contact time has a negligible sensitivity for the impacting position and is significantly reduced by up to 68%. Furthermore, the time, dynamic pressure, and energy criteria for triggering splashing and pancake bouncing are proposed theoretically. This work provides an understanding of the mechanism and the design guidelines for effectively reducing the contact time of the impacting droplet on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Bouncing dynamics of a trailing drop off-center impacting a leading drop with varying time intervals and Weber numbers are investigated experimentally. Whether the trailing drop impacts during the spreading or receding process of the leading drop is determined by the time interval. For a short time interval of 0.15 ≤ Δt* ≤ 0.66, the trailing drop impacts during the spreading of the leading drop, and the drops completely coalesce and rebound; for a large time interval of 0.66 < Δt* ≤ 2.21, the trailing drop impacts during the receding process, and the drops partially coalesce and rebound. Whether the trailing drop directly impacts the surface or the liquid film of the leading drop is determined by the Weber number. The trailing drop impacts the surface directly at moderate Weber numbers of 16.22 ≤ We ≤ 45.42, while it impacts the liquid film at large Weber numbers of 45.42 < We ≤ 64.88. Intriguingly, when the trailing drop impacts the surface directly or the receding liquid film, the contact time increases linearly with the time interval but independent of the Weber number; when the trailing drop impacts the spreading liquid film, the contact time suddenly increases, showing that the force of the liquid film of the leading drop inhibits the receding of the trailing drop. Finally, a theoretical model of the contact time for the drops is established, which is suitable for different impact scenarios of the successive off-center impact. This study provides a quantitative relationship to calculate the contact time of drops successively impacting a superhydrophobic surface, facilitating the design of anti-icing surfaces.

AIM: To evaluate whether the ribosome-crosslinked collagen membrane (RCCM) is non-inferior to the natural collagen membrane (NCM) used in regeneration surgery in terms of clinical attachment level (CAL) gain at 6 months. METHODS: Eighty patients diagnosed as generalized periodontitis presenting with isolated infrabony defect (≥4 mm deep) were enrolled and randomized to receive regenerative surgery, either with NCM or RCCM, both combined with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM). CAL, pocket probing depth (PPD), and gingival recession (GR) were recorded at baseline, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Periapical radiographs were taken at baseline, immediately, and 6 months after surgery. Early wound healing index (EHI) and patients' responses were recorded at 2 weeks postoperatively. RESULTS: At 6 months post-surgery, the mean CAL gain was 3.1 ± 1.5 mm in the NCM group and 2.9 ± 1.5 mm in the RCCM group, while the mean PPD was 4.3 ± 1.1 mm in the NCM group and 4.2 ± 1.0 mm in the RCCM group. Both groups demonstrated a statistically significant improvement from the baseline (p < .01). RCCM was non-inferior to NCM concerning the primary outcome (CAL gain at 6 months). The GR at 6 months postoperatively was 1.3 ± 1.2 and 1.2 ± 1.1 mm, which showed no difference compared with baseline. At 6 months follow-up, the radiographic linear bone fill (RLBF) was 6.5 ± 2.8 and 5.5 ± 2.6 mm (p > .05), while the bone fill percentage (BF%) was 102.3 ± 53.5% and 92.3 ± 40.1% (p > .05), in the NCM and RCCM groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in EHI and postoperative responses between two groups. CONCLUSION: RCCM + DBBM resulted in no-inferior clinical and radiographic outcomes to NCM + DBBM for the treatment of isolated infrabony defect in 6 months.

OBJECTIVES: In order to evaluate the effect of methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA) hydrogels containing the recombinant human amelogenin (rhAm) in vitro and in vivo. BACKGROUND: The ultimate goal in treating periodontal disease is to control inflammation and achieve regeneration of periodontal tissues. In recent years, methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA) containing recombinant human amyloid protein (rhAm) has been widely used as a new type of biomaterial in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the periodontal regeneration effects of this hydrogel. This experiment aims to explore the application of photoresponsive recombinant human amelogenin-loaded hyaluronic acid hydrogel for periodontal tissue regeneration and provide valuable insights into its potential use in this field. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of rhAm-HAMA hydrogel on the proliferation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) were assessed using the CCK-8 kit. The osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs was evaluated through ALP staining and real-time PCR. Calvarial parietal defects were created in 4-week-old Sprague Dawley rats and implanted with deproteinized bovine bone matrix in different treatment groups. The animals were euthanized after 4 and 8 weeks of healing. The bone volume of the defect was observed by micro-CT and histological analysis. RESULTS: Stimulating hPDLCs with rhAm-HAMA hydrogel did not significantly affect their proliferation (p > .05). ALP staining and real-time PCR results demonstrated that the rhAm-HAMA group exhibited a significant upregulation of osteoclastic gene expression (p < .05). Micro-CT results revealed a significant increase in mineralized tissue volume fraction (MTV/TV%), trabecular bone number (Tb.N), and mineralized tissue density (MTD) of the bone defect area in the rhAm-HAMA group compared to the other groups (p < .05). The results of hematoxylin and eosin staining and Masson staining at 8 weeks post-surgery further supported the results of the micro-CT. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that rhAm-HAMA hydrogel could effectively promote the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs and stabilize bone substitutes in the defects that enhance the bone regeneration in vivo.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Uric acid (UA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) may interact synergistically to accelerate the initiation and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study investigated the effects of a combination of high UA and high CRP on the risks of CVD. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 90,270 participants recruited from the Kailuan study were included, who were divided into four groups according to the presence/absence of hyperuricemia and inflammation. Cox regression was applied to evaluate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of CVD. C-statistics, net classification index (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were used to compare the incremental predictive of UA, CRP, and their combined effects on CVD. Mediation analysis was to explore the impact of CRP on the association between UA and CVD. Over a median follow-up of 14.95 years, we identified 11398 incident CVD cases. Compared to the low UA/low CRP group, the high UA/low CRP, low UA/high CRP and high UA/high CRP groups showed progressively higher risks of CVD, HR (95% CI): 1.18(1.10-1.27), 1.27(1.21-1.33) and 1.50 (1.33-1.69), respectively. The incorporation of UA and CRP into the traditional China-PAR model led to improvement in the C-statistic, NRI, and IDI, and was better than incorporation of either UA or CRP alone. Mediation analysis showed that CRP mediated the association between UA and CVD, accounting for 11.57% of the total effects. CONCLUSIONS: High UA/high CRP is associated with increased risks of CVD. Incorporation of both UA and CRP provided additional value for risk stratification.

Chaos theory offers a new way to investigate variations in financial markets data that cannot be obtained with traditional methods. The primary approach for diagnosing chaos is the existence of positive small Lyapunov views. The positive Lyapunov index indicates the average instability and the system's chaotic nature. The negativity indicates the average rate of non-chaoticness. In this paper, a new approach on basis of type-3 fuzzy logic systems is introduced for modeling the chaotic dynamics of financial data. Also, the attracting dimension tests and the Lyapunov views in the reconstructed dynamics are used for examinations. The simulations on case-study currency market show the applicability and good accuracy of the suggested approach.

Zearalenone (ZEN), a nonsteroidal estrogenic mycotoxin, causes enormous economic losses in the food and feed industries. Simple, rapid, low-cost, and quantitative analysis of ZEN is particularly urgent in the fields of food safety and animal husbandry. Using the bioluminescent bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum T3, we propose a bioluminescence inhibition assay to evaluate ZEN levels quickly. The limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and quantitative working range of this bioluminescence inhibition assay were 0.1 µg/mL, 5 µg/mL, and 5-100 µg/mL, respectively. The concentration-response curve of the bioluminescence inhibition rate and ZEN concentration was plotted within the range 5 to 100 µg/mL, as follows: y = 0.0069x2 - 0.0190x + 7.9907 (R2 = 0.9943, y is luminescence inhibition rate, x is ZEN concentration). First, we used the bioluminescence inhibition assay to detect the remaining ZEN in samples treated with purified lactonohydrolase ZHD101. The bioluminescence inhibition assay results showed a strong correlation with the HPLC analysis. Furthermore, we successfully evaluated the overall toxicity of samples treated with purified peroxidase Prx and H2O2 using the P. phosphoreum T3 bioluminescence inhibition assay. The results indicate that the degradation products of ZEN created by purified peroxidase Prx and H2O2 showed little toxicity to P. phosphoreum T3. In this study, a simple, rapid, and low-cost assay method of zearalenone by bioluminescent P. phosphoreum T3 was developed. The bioluminescence inhibition assay could be used to estimate the efficiency of enzymatic degradation of ZEN.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy of aminovalerate hydrochloride photodynamic therapy (PDT) for oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD),oral leukoplakia (OLK), along with identifying the influencing factors.Additionally, the study aims to detect the rates of recurrence and malignancy after PDT. METHOD: 60 patients with OPMD who received PDT at our hospital from 2006 to 2021 were included in this study. Relevant patient medical data were collected and analyzed using SAS 9.4 software.The Mann-Whitney U test was used to retrospectively analyze the factors influencing clinical efficacy, as well as recurrence rate and malignant transformation rate (MTR) after treatment. RESULT: Among the 60 OPMD patients receiving PDT, complete remission in 13 (21.67 %), partial remission in 39 (65.00 %), and no remission in eight (13.33 %), resulting in an overall effective rate of 86.67 %.Fifteen patients experienced relapse, leading to a recurrence rate of 25.00 %. Among these relapses,11 patients occurred within one year after treatment, corresponding to an 18.33 % recurrence rate during that period. Moreover, nine patients developed malignant transformation (MT), resulting in an MTR of 15.00 %. Out of these patients, six individuals developed MT within one year after treatment, resulting in a one-year MTR of 10.00 %. CONCLUSION: The study findings indicate that PDT shows promising clinical efficacy in the treatment of OPMD, with relatively limited and tolerable postoperative adverse reactions. However, there remains a certain rate of recurrence and malignancy after treatment. Therefore, close attention should be paid to postoperative monitoring, regular follow-up, and further expansion of the sample size to observe its long-term efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The association of longitudinal uric acid (UA) changes with cardiac conduction block risk is unclear. We aimed to identify the trajectories of UA and explore its association with cardiac conduction block. METHODS: A total of 67,095 participants with a mean age of 53.12 years were included from the Kailuan cohort in Tangshan, China, who were free of cardiac conduction block and with repeated measurements of UA from 2006 to 2012. UA trajectories during 2006 to 2012 were identified by group-based trajectory modeling. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the association of UA trajectories with cardiac conduction block. RESULTS: We categorized three observed discrete trajectories of UA during 2006-2012 period: low-stable, moderate-stable, and high-stable. Over a median follow-up of 6.19 years, we identified 1405 (2.09%) incident cardiac conduction block. Compared to those in the low-stable trajectory, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of cardiac conduction block in the moderate-stable and high-stable trajectory were 1.30 (1.16-1.47) and 1.86 (1.56-2.22), and HRs of atrioventricular block were 1.39 (1.12-1.72) and 2.90 (2.19-3.83), and HRs of bundle branch blocks were 1.27 (1.10-1.47) and 1.43 (1.13-1.79). Notably, although the average UA level in the moderate-stable UA trajectory group is within the normal range, the risk of cardiac conduction block has increased. CONCLUSIONS: The moderate-stable and high-stable trajectories are associated with increased risk for new-onset cardiac conduction block. Monitoring UA trajectories may assist in identifying subpopulations at higher risk for cardiac conduction block.

Peri-implant lesion is a grave condition afflicting numerous indi-viduals with dental implants. It results from persistent periodontal bacteria accumulation causing inflammation around the implant site, which can primarily lead to implant loosening and ultimately the implant loss. Early-stage peri-implant lesions exhibit symptoms akin to gum disease, including swelling, redness and bleeding of the gums surrounding the implant. These signs indicate infection and inflammation of the peri-implant tissues, which may result in bone loss and implant failure. To address this problem, a thermionic strategy was applied by designing a cuprorivaite-hardystonite bioceramic/alginate composite hydrogel with photothermal and Cu/Zn/Si multiple ions releasing property. This innovative approach creates a thermionic effect by the release of bioactive ions (Cu2+ and Zn2+ and SiO32-) from the composite hydrogel and the mild heat environment though the photothermal effect of the composite hydrogel induced by near-infrared light irradiation. The most distinctive advantage of this thermionic effect is to substantially eliminate periodontal pathogenic bacteria and inhibit inflammation, while simultaneously enhance peri-implant osseointegration. This unique attribute renders the use of this composite hydrogel highly effective in significantly improving the survival rate of implants after intervention in peri-implant lesions, which is a clinical challenge in periodontics. This study reveals application potential of a new biomaterial-based approach for peri-implant lesion, as it not only eliminates the infection and inflammation, but also enhances the osteointegration of the dental implant, which provides theoretical insights and practical guidance to prevent and manage early-stage peri-implant lesion using bioactive functional materials.

Liver fibrosis is characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) as a wound healing process. Activated hepatic stellate cells (HpSCs) are the major producer of the ECM and play a central role in liver fibrogenesis. It has been widely accepted that elimination of activated HpSCs or reversion to a quiescent state can be a feasible strategy for resolving the disease, further highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic targets. Calreticulin (CRT) is a molecular chaperone that normally resides in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), important in protein folding and trafficking through the secretory pathway. CRT also plays a critical role in calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis, with its Ca2+ storage capacity. In the current study, we aimed to demonstrate its function in directing HpSC activation. In a mouse liver injury model, CRT was up-regulated in HpSCs. In cellular experiments, we further showed that this activation was through modulating the canonical TGF-ß signaling. As down-regulation of CRT in HpSCs elevated intracellular Ca2+ levels through a form of Ca2+ influx, named store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), we examined whether moderating SOCE affected TGF-ß signaling. Interestingly, blocking SOCE had little effect on TGF-ß-induced gene expression. In contrast, inhibition of ER Ca2+ release using the inositol trisphosphate receptor inhibitor 2-APB increased TGF-ß signaling. Treatment with 2-APB did not alter SOCE but decreased intracellular Ca2+ at the basal level. Indeed, adjusting Ca2+ concentrations by EGTA or BAPTA-AM chelation further enhanced TGF-ß-induced signaling. Our results suggest a crucial role of CRT in the liver fibrogenic process through modulating Ca2+ concentrations and TGF-ß signaling in HpSCs, which may provide new information and help advance the current discoveries for liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Although bundle branch block and atrioventricular block are recognized to be association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, the relationship between cardiac conduction block (CCB) and both CVD and all-cause mortality has yet to be explored. AIMS: To explore the relationship between CCB and CVD and all-cause mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 145,805 subjects (mean age 49.7 years, 81.2% males) from the kailuan study. CCB was diagnosed through a 12­lead electrocardiograph (ECG). Mortality and CVD events were ascertained through multiple sources, including a municipal social insurance institution, hospital records, death certificates, and regular active follow-ups. After a mean follow-up of 12.5 years, 18,301 cases developed all-cause mortality. After excluding 4443 subjects with CVD presence at baseline, 13,208 cases of CVD occurred among the 141,362 study subjects during follow-up. Compared with non-CCB group, the cumulative incidence of CVD and all-cause mortality for CCB group was 18.38% VS 12.14% and 33.45% VS 14.18%, respectively. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) with CCB group were 1.25(1.17-1.34) for CVD, and 1.31(1.25-1.38) for all-cause mortality. Additionally, there were generally stronger associations for CCB with all-cause mortality and CVD in younger participants compared with their older counterparts (Ps-interaction <0.001). CONCLUSION: CCB can increase the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality in the general population. Our findings highlight the importance of strategies for preventing CCB to reduce the risk of CVD and mortality.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is a tool designed to enhance team communication and patient safety. When used properly, the SSC acts as a layer of defence against never events. In this study, we performed secondary qualitative analysis of operating theatres (OT) SSC observational notes to examine how the SSC was used after an intensive SSC re-implementation effort and drew on relevant theories to shed light on the observed patterns of behaviours. We aimed to go beyond assessing checklist compliance and to understand potential sociopsychological mechanisms of the variations in SSC practices. METHODS: Direct observation notes of 109 surgical procedures across 13 surgical disciplines were made by two trained nurses in the OT of a large tertiary hospital in Singapore from February to April 2022, three months after SSC re-implementation. Only notes relevant to the use of SSC were extracted and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Data were coded following an inductive process to identify themes or patterns of SSC practices. These patterns were subsequently interpreted against a relevant theory to appreciate the potential sociopsychological forces behind them. RESULTS: Two broad types of SSC practices and their respective sub-themes were identified. Type 1 (vs. Type 2) SSC practices are characterized by patience and thoroughness (vs. hurriedness and omission) in carrying out the SSC process, dedication and attention (vs. delegation and distraction) to the SSC safety checks, and frequent (vs. absence of) safety voices during the conduct of SSC. These patterns were conceptualized as safety-seeking action vs. ritualistic action using Merton's social deviance theory. CONCLUSION: Ritualistic practice of the SSC can undermine surgical safety by creating conditions conducive to never events. To fully realize the SSC's potential as an essential tool for communication and safety, a concerted effort is needed to balance thoroughness with efficiency. Additionally, fostering a culture of collaboration and collegiality is crucial to reinforce and enhance the culture of surgical safety.

AIMS: The relationship between uric acid (UA) concentrations and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially for subtypes of CVD among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate whether uric acid concentration was associated with subtypes of CVD and all-cause mortality among individuals with CKD. METHODS: A total of 27,707 individuals with CKD, free of CVD at recruitment from the Kailuan Study, were included. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 11-12 years, we documented 674 myocardial infarctions, 1197 heart failures, 2406 strokes, and 5676 total deaths. Among participants with CKD, compared with those in the lowest tertile of UA, the HRs (95% CIs) of participants in the highest UA tertile were 1.38 (1.13-1.67) for myocardial infarction, 1.60 (1.38-1.85) for heart failure, 1.01 (0.91-1.12) for stroke, and 1.29 (1.21-1.38) for all-cause mortality. Subgroup analyses showed that the associations between UA and heart failure and all-cause mortality were stronger in individuals with eGFR <45 mL/min/1.73m2 compared to their counterparts (Pinteraction<0.05). Additionally, the association between UA and all-cause mortality was stronger among individuals without diabetes than those with diabetes (Pinteraction<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In individuals with CKD, a higher concentration of UA was associated with a higher risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and all-cause mortality, following a dose-response relationship. Our data underscore the importance of UA screening among individuals with CKD for CVD and premature death prevention.


This study investigated the relationship between uric acid (UA) concentrations and the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) using the Kailuan Study. A higher concentration of UA was associated with a higher risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and all-cause mortality among individuals with CKD, following a dose-response manner.The associations between concentrations of UA and the risk of heart failure and all-cause mortality were more pronounced in individuals with severe kidney impairment (estimated glomerular filtration rate <45 mL/min/1.73m2). Furthermore, the association between UA and all-cause mortality was stronger among individuals without diabetes compared to those with the condition.

PURPOSE: To observe the effect of eicosapentaenoc acid (EPA) on the expression of inflammatory factors in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLCs) induced by using lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis). METHODS: hPDLCs were cultured by using tissue block method, and the effects of different concentrations of EPA on the activity of hPDLCs cells were observed by MTT method. According to MTT results, the appropriate concentration of EPA was selected, and the expression of interleukin-6(IL-6), IL-8 and IL-1ß in hPDLCs induced by P.gingivalis LPS was detected by real time PCR and ELISA. The data were evaluated by SPSS 10.0 software package. RESULTS: 25-100 µmol/L EPA had no effect on the activity of hPDLCs cells, but could inhibit the expression of IL-6, IL-8 and IL-1ß induced by P. gingivalis LPS in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: EPA can inhibit the expression of inflammatory factors induced by P. gingivalis LPS without affecting cell activity, indicating that EPA has the possibility of anti-inflammatory treatment of periodontitis.

In December 2022, the Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) became dominant in China due to its high infectivity and lower mortality rate. The risk of critical illness and mortality among patients with hematologic malignancies who contracted SARS-CoV-2 was particularly high. The aim of this study was to draft a consensus to facilitate effective treatments for these patients based on the type and severity of the disease. Following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China, a steering committee consisting of experienced hematologists was formed by the Specialized Committee of Oncology and Microecology of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. The expert group drafted a consensus on the management and intervention measures for different types of hematologic malignancies based on the clinical characteristics of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, along with relevant guidelines and literature. The expert group drafted independent recommendations on several important aspects based on the epidemiology of the Omicron variant in China and the unique vulnerability of patients with hematologic malignancies. These included prophylactic vaccinations for those with hematologic malignancies, the use of plasma from blood donors who recovered from the novel coronavirus infection, the establishment of negative pressure wards, the use of steady-state mobilization of peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells, the provision of psychological support for patients and medical staff, and a focus on maintaining a healthy intestinal microecology.
