RESUMO

PURPOSE: For acute stroke patients requiring MR examination and unable to provide a reliable history, screening for potentially MRI-incompatible objects (PMIOs) typically necessitates the use of plain-film radiographs (PFRs). However, using a whole body CT scout at the time of non-contrast head CT scans can preclude critical delays. Here, we aim to compare the effectiveness of PFRs and CT scouts in detecting PMIOs. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care institution, involving 408 imaging studies from 200 patients, half of which contained PMIOs. The diagnostic performances of CT scouts and PFRs were evaluated by six blinded readers, including two board-certified neuroradiologists, one neuroradiology fellow, and three radiology residents. RESULTS: 2448 interpretations from the 6 readers were analyzed. The diagnostic performance of combined CT scout images (full-body and regional) was not significantly different from that of PFRs for all six readers (p = 0.06). However, PFRs outperformed full-body CT scouts in PMIO detection (p = 0.01), with no significant differences observed between PFRs and regional CT scouts (p = 0.4). Notably, the diagnostic accuracy of the radiology residents was found to be equivalent to radiologists across all imaging techniques. CONCLUSION: Integrating CT scouts in acute stroke protocols may help expedite MRI screening. The scouts should include the head, neck, chest, upper arms, abdomen, pelvis, and thighs. Including radiology residents in the screening process for PMIOs may be an avenue for resource optimization in acute care settings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Antioxidants minimise oxidative stress and enhance sperm quality in the process of cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract as an additive during the post-dilution and post-thaw stages of Murrah buffalo semen cryopreservation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The semen sample was diluted using Tris-Egg-Yolk-Citric-Acid-Fructose-Glycerol extender and subsequently divided into three groups: Group 1, TEYCAFG without any additives or controls (C); Group 2, TEYCAFG fortified with a 50 ug/mL aqueous extract of cinnamon (T1); and Group 3, TEYCAFG fortified with a 50 ug/mL ethanolic extract of cinnamon (T2). The evaluation included an assessment of progressive motility, live spermatozoa, sperm abnormalities, HOST, CMPT, and enzyme leakage (GOT and GPT) at both the post-dilution and post-thaw stages. RESULTS: The groups that received cinnamon supplementation demonstrated statistically significant improvements (p<0.05) in various parameters, including an increase in the progressive motility, live spermatozoa, and HOS-positive spermatozoa, as well as greater distance traveled by vanguard spermatozoa compared to the control group. Furthermore, the cinnamon-added groups exhibited a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the percentage of sperm abnormalities and lower enzyme leakage (GOT and GPT) in post-thawed semen. CONCLUSION: Aqueous extract of C. zeylanicum at a concentration of 50 µg/mL provides superior protection of sperm structures and functions as compared to both the ethanolic extract of C. zeylanicum at the same concentration and the control group. RESUMO

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious, notifiable, and fatal hemorrhagic viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. The disease was reported for the first time in India during 2020, resulted in serious outbreaks and economic loss in North-Eastern (NE) parts, since 47% of the Indian pig population is distributed in the NE region. The present study focused on analyzing the spatial autocorrelation, spatio-temporal patterns, and directional trend of the disease in NE India during 2020-2021. The ASF outbreak data (2020-2021) were collected from the offices of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in seven NE states of India to identify the potential clusters, spatio-temporal aggregation, temporal distribution, disease spread, density maps, and risk zones. Between 2020 and 2021, a total of 321 ASF outbreaks were recorded, resulting in 59,377 deaths. The spatial pattern analysis of the outbreak data (2020-2021) revealed that ASF outbreaks were clustered in 2020 (z score = 2.20, p < .01) and 2021 (z score = 4.89, p < .01). Spatial autocorrelation and Moran's I value (0.05-0.06 in 2020 and 2021) revealed the spatial clustering and spatial relationship between the outbreaks. The hotspot analysis identified districts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and districts of Mizoram, Tripura as significant hotspots in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The spatial-scan statistics with a purely spatial and purely temporal analysis revealed six and one significant clusters, respectively. Retrospective unadjusted, temporal, and spatially adjusted space-time analysis detected five, five, and two statistically significant (p < .01) clusters, respectively. The directional trend analysis identified the direction of disease distribution as northeast-southwest (2020) and north-south (2021), indicate the possibility of ASF introduction to India from China. The high-risk zones and spatio-temporal pattern of ASF outbreaks identified in the present study can be used as a guide for deploying proper prevention, optimizing resource allocation and disease control measures in NE Indian states.

RESUMO

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is considered a trivial disease and is often self-treated with over-the-counter drugs and home remedies. However, AR is a contributing risk factor for asthma associated with complications, including chronic cough, eosinophilic esophagitis, and otitis media with effusion. In AR, inflammation is primarily mediated by histamines. Guidelines advise using second-generation oral H1 antihistamines as the primary treatment for AR. Second-generation H1 antihistamines strongly prefer the H1 receptor, limiting their ability to enter the central nervous system. Thus, they have minimal adverse effects. Among these H1 antihistamines, bilastine is highly specific for H1 receptors with a slight affinity for other receptors. It has a rapid and prolonged action, which reduces the need for frequent dosing and has better compliance. In the long term, bilastine is well-tolerated with minimal adverse effects. It is not associated with drug interactions, so dosage adjustment is unnecessary. Bilastine does not penetrate the brain and is nonsedating at 80 mg once daily. The low possibility of drug-drug interactions and pharmacokinetics of bilastine makes it suitable for elderly patients, even with compromised hepatic and renal function, without dose adjustment. This review comprehensively discusses the guidelines and the role of bilastine in treating AR. How to cite this article: Tiwaskar M, Vora A, Tewary K, et al. RESUMO

The habitation and environment are affected by the stable isotopes of caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr), as well as by their radioactive isotopes. The current work gives insight on Alstonia scholaris' capacity to phytoextract stable caesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr), as well as the plant's ability to protect against the toxicity of both elements. Experiments with Cs [0-5 mM (CsCl)] and Sr [0-3 mM (SrCl2. 6H2O)] dosing in controlled light, temperature, and humidity condition in greenhouse for 21 days were undertaken. Cs and Sr accumulation in different plant parts was quantified with atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) respectively. Hyper-accumulation capacity for Cs and Sr was estimated with indices like transfer factor (TF) and translocation factors (TrF). The uptake pattern of caesium in Alstonia scholaris is 5452.8-24,771.4 mg/kg DW (TF = 85.2-57.6) and in the case of Sr is 1307.4-8705.7 mg/kg DW (TF = 85.3-1.46). The findings demonstrated the plant's ability to transfer Cs and Sr to aboveground biomass on the basis of dry weight, with the majority of the metals being deposited in the shoot rather than the root portion of the plant. For Cs and Sr, with increasing concentration, the plants exhibited the enzymatic expression for defence against metal toxicity by free radicals compared to control. Field emission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM with EDS) was employed to assess the spatial distribution of Cs and Sr in plant leaf, indicating the accumulation of Cs, Sr, and their homologous components.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture pose a major public health problem in our ageing population, and particularly concerning is the increased morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporotic hip fractures. While overall diagnosis and treatment for osteoporosis have improved, osteoporosis in men remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. We aim to describe the difference in clinical characteristics between elderly men and women with osteoporotic hip fractures in Sarawak General Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients diagnosed with osteoporotic hip fracture admitted to Sarawak General Hospital from June 2019 to March 2021 were recruited, and demographic data and clinical features were obtained. RESULTS: There were 140 patients with osteoporotic hip fracture, and 40 were men (28.6%). The mean age for males was 74.1 ± 9.5 years, while the mean age for females was 77.4 ± 9.1 years (p=0.06). The types of fracture consisted of neck of femur=78, intertrochanteric=61 and subtrochanteric=1. More men were active smokers (15% vs 1%, p<0.001). There were 20 men with secondary osteoporosis (50%), while 13 women (13%) had secondary osteoporosis (p<0.001). The causes of secondary osteoporosis among the men were hypogonadism, COPD, glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, renal disease, androgen deprivation therapy, thyroid disorder, prostate cancer and previous gastrectomy. There were two deaths among the men and four deaths among the women during the inpatient and 3 months follow-up period. There was no statistical significance between the mortality rates between male patients (5%) and female patients (4%) (p=0.55). CONCLUSION: There were more females with osteoporotic hip fractures, and there were significantly more males with secondary osteoporotic hip fractures.

RESUMO

Ischemic stroke is a major health issue, especially for the older population and it may have severe effects. Stroke diagnosis and treatment have advanced over the last 20 years, which has resulted in considerable reductions in death, long-term impairment, and the need for institutional care. Younger age groups have seen the majority of trials for acute, interventional, and preventive therapy. The purpose of this research was to identify distinct subgroups of older people who had suffered an ischemic stroke and examine the role that risk factors and previous illnesses played in their development. Ischemic stroke risk factors varied by age, gender and exhibited their own unique features. Smoking, cholesterol, and psychological/emotional stress were shown to have the greatest prevalence (p<0.06) among stroke patients aged 45-60. Smoking is associated with a significant (p<0.07) decline in health in elderly people. Our results imply that there are significant patterns of risk factors and preexisting illnesses among the various subgroups of older people who have had an ischemic stroke. Atherosclerotic (large-artery) and cardio embolic (small-artery) ischemic strokes were shown to be the most prevalent among the elderly. Strong associations were found between these subtypes and other risk factors, including higher cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, and atrial fibrillation. This research emphasizes the need for individualized preventative methods and therapeutic therapy, as well as the need to recognize the variability of ischemic stroke in the elderly.

RESUMO

We present a speckle-based deep learning approach for orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode classification. In this method, we have simulated the speckle fields of the Laguerre-Gauss (LG), Hermite-Gauss (HG), and superposition modes by multiplying these modes with a random phase function and then taking the Fourier transform. The intensity images of these speckle fields are fed to a convolutional neural network (CNN) for training a classification model that classifies modes with an accuracy >99%. We have trained and tested our method against the influence of atmospheric turbulence by training the models with perturbed LG, HG, and superposition modes and found that models are still able to classify modes with an accuracy >98%. We have also trained and tested our model with experimental speckle images of LG modes generated by three different ground glasses. We have achieved a maximum accuracy of 96% for the most robust case, where the model is trained with all simulated and experimental data. The novelty of the technique is that one can do the mode classification just by using a small portion of the speckle fields because speckle grains contain the information about the original mode, thus eliminating the need for capturing the whole modal field, which is modal dependent.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To provide a precise summary and collate the hitherto available clinical evidence on the effect of vitamin D supplementation on clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched using appropriate keywords till June 8, 2021, to identify observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting adverse clinical outcomes (ICU admission and/or mortality) in COVID-19 patients receiving vitamin D supplementation vs. those not receiving the same. Both prior use and use of vitamin D after COVID-19 diagnosis were considered. Unadjusted/adjusted pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated (PROSPERO registration number CRD42021248488). RESULTS: We identified 13 studies (10 observational, 3 RCTs) pooling data retrieved from 2933 COVID-19 patients. Pooled analysis of unadjusted data showed that vitamin D use in COVID-19 was significantly associated with reduced ICU admission/mortality (OR 0.41, 95% CI: 0.20, 0.81, p = 0.01, I2 = 66%, random-effects model). Similarly, on pooling adjusted risk estimates, vitamin D was also found to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes (pooled OR 0.27, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.91, p = 0.03, I2 = 80%, random-effects model). Subgroup analysis showed that vitamin D supplementation was associated with improved clinical outcomes only in patients receiving the drug post-COVID-19 diagnosis and not in those who had received vitamin D before diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D supplementation might be associated with improved clinical outcomes, especially when administered after the diagnosis of COVID-19. However, issues regarding the appropriate dose, duration, and mode of administration of vitamin D remain unanswered and need further research.

RESUMO

Radionuclide contamination is a concerning threat due to unexpected nuclear disasters and authorized discharge of radioactive elements, both in the past and in present times. Use of atomic power for energy generation is associated with unresolved issues concerning storage of residues and contaminants. For example, the nuclear accidents in Chernobyl 1986 and Fukushima 2011 resulted in considerable deposition of cesium (Cs) in soil, along with other radionuclides. Among Cs radioactive variants, the anthropogenic radioisotope 137Cs (t½ = 30.16 years) is of serious environmental concern, owing to its rapid incorporation into biological systems and emission of ß and γ radiation during the decaying process. To remediate contaminated areas, mostly conventional techniques are applied that are not eco-friendly. Hence, an alternative green technology, i.e., phytoremediation, should in future be considered and implemented. This sustainable technology generates limited secondary waste and its objectives are to utilize hyper-accumulating plants to extract, stabilize, degrade, and filter the radionuclides. The review highlights plant mechanisms for up-taking radionuclides and influences of different environmental factors involved in the process, while considering its long-term effects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have correlated severe deterioration of COVID-19 patients due to excessive and uncontrolled production of cytokines. There is a pressing need to explore therapies, which could prevent the cytokine storm rather than terminating it. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of itolizumab on clinical outcomes of patients with moderate-severe COVID-19 disease admitted to ICU. The primary aim of the current study is to find out any mortality benefit in 14 days. The secondary aim is to assess the morbidity outcomes in terms of reduction in inflammatory markers and also the duration of hospital stays to assess the prognostication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a retrospective case-control study in which laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU were taken. A total of 62 patients were recruited, 31 patients received itolizumab (cases/treatment group) and 31 patients didn't receive itolizumab (designated as controls). RESULTS: Among the total patients recruited, 68% of the study population was male and 32% were female. A total of 12 patients expired among cases and 13 expired among controls. Overall mortality in both groups was noted to be almost similar. The control group showed mortality at lower computed tomography (CT) scores compared to the cases. There is a significant reduction in inflammatory markers, like interleukins-6 (IL-6) and D-dimer in cases compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, treating patients with cytokine storms before they require intubation/mechanical ventilation is crucial to preventing deaths. Itolizumab has shown no clinical benefit in critically ill COVID-19 patients, however, timely initiation of itolizumab therapy may serve as a key therapeutic option in preventing the mortality and morbidity outcomes in moderate-severe COVID-19 patients.

RESUMO

The rise in environmental pollutant levels in recent years is mostly attributable to anthropogenic activities such as industrial, agricultural and other activities. Additionally, these activities may produce excessive levels of dangerous toxicants such as heavy metals, organic pollutants including pesticide and herbicide chemicals, and sewage discharges from residential and commercial sources. With a focus on environmentally friendly, sustainable technology, new technologies such as combined process of nanotechnology and bioremediation are urgently needed to accelerate the cost-effective remediation process to alleviate toxic contaminants than the conventional remediation methods. Numerous studies have shown that nanoparticles possess special qualities including improved catalysis and adsorption as well as increased reactivity. Currently, microorganisms and their extracts are being used as promising, environmentally friendly catalysts for engineered nanomaterial. In the long term, this combination of both technologies called nano-bioremediation may significantly alter the field of environmental remediation since it is more intelligent, safe, environmentally friendly, economical and green. This review provides an overview of soil and water remediation techniques as well as the use of nano-bioremediation, which is made from various living organisms. Additionally, current developments related to the mechanism, model and kinetic studies for remediation of agricultural contaminants have been discussed.

RESUMO

Background The Cesarean Section (CS) is a major obstetric life-saving procedure used to avoid pregnancy and childbirth complications. Cesarean sections are becoming more popular across the world, as well as in Nepal. Objective To assess the prevalence of cesarean section and its associated factors among women in Dhulikhel, Nepal. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted where 1246 pregnant women of age 15-45 years, admitted and delivered in hospital, were selected through purposive sampling technique and interviewed using structured questionnaires in Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University Hospital, Kavre, Nepal. Result The prevalence of cesarean section among women was 39.7% where the most common indication was previous cesarean section with scar tenderness, 27.9%. Half of the participants, i.e. 50.6%, were primigravida. Majority of women, 97.5% had done their antenatal checkup and among them 74.8% had their checkup in Dhulikhel Hospital, Kathmandu University Hospital. Most of them, i.e.76.2% had emergency cesarean section and 69.5% had primary cesarean section. Women of the age group 30-45 years (AOR=2.23) and women with higher secondary education level (AOR=2.03) were two times more likely to perform cesarean section. Women involved in service (AOR=1.37) and business (AOR=1.23) had greater odds of performing cesarean section than homemakers. Women giving birth to infants weighing 3.51- 5.00 kg were more likely to perform cesarean section (AOR=1.33). Conclusion The prevalence of cesarean section is noticeably high where the educated, employed and higher aged women are more inclined to cesarean section. More obstetric factors could be explored to determine the rise in cesarean section in Nepal which can help in decision making for clinicians.

RESUMO

Human milk is elixir for neonates and is a rich source of nutrients and beneficial microbiota required for infant growth and development. Its benefits prompted research into probing the milk components and their use as prophylactic or therapeutic agents. Culture-independent estimation of milk microbiome and high-resolution identification of milk components provide information, but a holistic purview of these research domains is lacking. Here, we review the current research on bio-therapeutic components of milk and simplified future directions for its efficient usage. Publicly available databases such as PubMed and Google scholar were searched for keywords such as probiotics and prebiotics related to human milk, microbiome and milk oligosaccharides. This was further manually curated for inclusion and exclusion criteria relevant to human milk and clinical efficacy. The literature was classified into subgroups and then discussed in detail to facilitate understanding. Although milk research is still in infancy, it is clear that human milk has many functions including protection of infants by passive immunization through secreted antibodies, and transfer of immune regulators, cytokines and bioactive peptides. Unbiased estimates show that the human milk carries a complex community of microbiota which serves as the initial inoculum for establishment of infant gut. Our search effectively screened for evidence that shows that milk also harbours many types of prebiotics such as human milk oligosaccharides which encourage growth of beneficial probiotics. The milk also trains the naive immune system of the infant by supplying immune cells and stimulatory factors, thereby strengthening mucosal and systemic immune system. Our systematic review would improve understanding of human milk and the inherent complexity and diversity of human milk. The interrelated functional role of human milk components especially the oligosaccharides and microbiome has been discussed which plays important role in human health.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We sought to gain insight into the prevalence of COVID-19 and the impact stringent social distancing (shielding) has had on a large cohort of rheumatology (RD) follow-up patients from a single large UK centre. METHODS: We linked COVID-19-related deaths, screening and infection rates to our RD population (1.2.20-1.5.20) and audited active rheumatology follow-up patients through survey data communicated via a linked mobile phone SMS message. We assessed epidemiology, effect of stringent social distancing (shielding) and quality of life (HRQoL) by Short Form 12 (SF12). RESULTS: There were 10,387 active follow-up patients, 7911 had linked mobile numbers. 12/10,387 RD patients died from COVID-19 (0.12%); local population 4131/7,415,149 (0.12%). For patients with mobile phones, 1693/7911 (21%) responded and of these, 1605 completed the SF12. Inflammatory arthritis predominated 1174/1693 (69%); 792/1693 (47%) were shielding. Advice on shielding/distancing was followed by 1372/1693(81%). 61/1693 (4%) reported COVID-19 (24/61 shielding); medication distribution was similar in COVID and non-COVID patients. Mental SF12 (MCS) but not physical (PCS) component scores were lower in COVID (60) vs. non-COVID (1545), mean differences: MCS, - 3.3; 95% CI - 5.2 to - 1.4, P < 0.001; PCS, - 0.4; 95% CI, - 2.1 to 1.3). In 1545 COVID-negative patients, those shielding had lower MCS (- 2.1; 95% CI - 2.8 to - 1.4) and PCS (- 3.1, 95% CI - 3.7 to - 2.5), both P < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: Our full RD cohort had no excess of COVID deaths compared to the general local population. Our survey data suggest that shielding adversely affects both mental and physical health in RD. These data broaden our understanding of shielding, indicating need for further study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare perineal wound healing between gluteal turnover flap and primary closure in patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection (APR) for rectal cancer. METHODS: Patients who underwent APR for primary or recurrent rectal cancer with gluteal turnover flap in two university hospitals (2016-2021) were compared to a multicentre cohort of primary closure (2000-2017). The primary endpoint was uncomplicated perineal wound healing within 30 days. Secondary endpoints were long-term wound healing, related re-interventions, and perineal herniation. The perineal hernia rate was assessed using Kaplan Meier analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients had a gluteal turnover flap and 194 had primary closure. The uncomplicated perineal wound-healing rate within 30 days was 68% (17/25) after gluteal turnover flap versus 64% (124/194) after primary closure, OR 2.246; 95% CI 0.734-6.876; p = 0.156 in multivariable analysis. No major wound complications requiring surgical re-intervention occurred after flap closure. Eighteen patients with gluteal turnover flap completed 12-month follow-up, and none of them had chronic perineal sinus, compared to 6% (11/173) after primary closure (p = 0.604). The symptomatic 18-month perineal hernia rate after flap closure was 0%, compared to 9% after primary closure (p = 0.184). CONCLUSIONS: The uncomplicated perineal wound-healing rate after the gluteal turnover flap and primary closure after APR is similar, and no chronic perineal sinus or perineal hernia occurred after flap closure. Future studies have to confirm potential benefits of the gluteal turnover flap.

RESUMO

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable "pear" shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole (E3) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in ^{222,228}Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of E3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing ^{222}Ra as pear shaped with stable octupole deformation, while ^{228}Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between evening chronotype, a proxy marker of circadian system dysfunction, and disordered eating behavior and poor dietary habits in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated 783 adults with BD. Chronotype was determined using item 5 from the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. The Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) and the Rapid Eating Assessment for Participants-Shortened Version (REAP-S) were used to assess disordered eating behavior and dietary habits respectively. General linear models and logistic regression models were utilized to evaluate differences between chronotype groups. RESULTS: Two hundred and eight (27%) BD participants self-identified as having evening chronotypes. Compared to non-evening types, evening types were younger (P < 0.01) and, after controlling for age, had higher mean EDDS composite z-scores (P < 0.01); higher rates of binge-eating (BE) behavior (P = 0.04), bulimia nervosa (P < 0.01), and nocturnal eating binges (P < 0.01); and a higher body mass index (P = 0.04). Compared to non-evening types, evening chronotypes had a lower REAP-S overall score (P < 0.01) and scored lower on the 'healthy foods' and 'avoidance of unhealthy food' factors. Evening types also skipped breakfast more often (P < 0.01), ate less fruit (P = 0.02) and vegetables (P = 0.04), and consumed more fried foods (P < 0.01), unhealthy snacks (P = 0.02), and soft drinks (P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the circadian system plays a role in the disordered eating and unhealthy dietary behaviors observed in BD patients. The circadian system may therefore represent a therapeutic target in BD-associated morbidity that warrants further investigation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To extend the previous study by Schriever and colleagues from 2018 providing normative data and re-investigating the reliability for U-Sniff test in children in additional countries. METHODOLOGY: A total of 388 children (196 boys, 192 girls) from eight countries (China, Germany, Iran, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Paraguay, and Russia) participated in this study. The children were recruited from public local schools in those particular countries. The odor identification ability was evaluated using the U-Sniff test, a 12-item odor identification test developed for children. In addition, reliability was examined using test-retest design in the children for each country. RESULTS: The mean U-Sniff test score across all children was 10.3 +- 1.7 points. Normative data were established. A high test-retest reliability of the U-Sniff test was demonstrated across the eight participating countries. CONCLUSIONS: The U-Sniff test for children exhibits a high test-retest reliability on a global scale.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Sikkim is a part of Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot of India rich in bamboo flora harbouring over 30 different bamboo species. The present study was aimed to investigate the larval mosquito diversity in the bamboo stumps of Gangtok, Sikkim. Besides, efforts were also made to evaluate the propensity of particular species of mosquito towards specific bamboo species (if any). METHODS: A total of 75 bamboo stumps of four genera were surveyed and screened at five different sampling sites of Gangtok from July to October 2017. Mosquito species similarity between the five sampling sites and the four varieties of bamboo species was calculated using the Bray-Curtis similarity index. RESULTS: A total of 216 larvae were collected from 25 different bamboo stumps studied. The species identified were Aedes albopictus, Ae. atlanticus, Ae. aegypti, Orthopodomyia signifera, Oclerotatus japonicus, Oc. taeniorhynchus, Armigeres subalbatus, and Toxorhynchites splendens. The Oc. japonicus (34.5%) was found to be the most abundant species having distribution in Phyllostachys assamica, Dendrocalamus hamiltonii and Bambusa nutans. On the other hand, genus Armigeres subalbatus and Tx. splendens were found to breed only in the stumps of P. assamica. Based on Bray-Curtis similarity index highest species similarity was recorded between D. hamiltonii and P. assamica bamboo species. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The study may help to understand the bioecology of the mosquito larvae which may help to devise suitable mosquito control programmes. Future studies including the survey of large number of bamboo stumps both in urban and rural areas of Sikkim may provide better insight into the mosquito diversity in the bamboo stumps of Sikkim.
