RESUMO

Examples are presented that application of amorphous Al x O y nucleation layer is an efficient way of controlling spatial distribution of GaN nanowires grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. On GaN/sapphire substrates Al x O y stripes induce formation of GaN nanowires while a compact GaN layer is formed outside the stripes. We show that the ratio of nanowire length h to the thickness of the compact layer d can be tailored by adjusting impinging gallium and nitrogen fluxes. Calculations of the h/d aspect ratio were performed taking into account dependence of nanowire incubation time on the growth parameters. In agreement with calculations we found that the value of h/d ratio can be increased by increasing the N/Ga flux ratio in the way that the N-limited growth regime determines nanowire axial growth rate while growth of compact layer remains Ga-limited. This ensures the highest value of the h/d aspect ratio. Local modification of GaN growth kinetics caused by surface diffusion of Ga adatoms through the boundary separating the Al x O y stripe and the GaN/sapphire substrate is discussed. We show that during the nanowire incubation period gallium is transported out of the Al x O y stripe, which delays nanowire nucleation onset and leads to reduced length of GaN nanowires in the vicinity of the stripe edge. Simultaneously the growth on the GaN/sapphire substrate is locally enhanced, so the planar GaN layers adopts a typical edge shape of mesa structures grown by selective area growth. Ga diffusion length on a-Al x O y surface of ∼500 nm is inferred from our results.

COVID-19 has been considered a possible cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or similar conditions. However, what specific disease symptoms may contribute most to prolonged PTSD-like symptoms in COVID-19 survivors is unclear. The study aimed to present the factor structure of COVID-19 symptoms and identify which symptoms of COVID-19 best explain the subsequent presence of PTSD-like symptoms in mild COVID-19 survivors. COVID-positive adults (n = 341) completed online self-report scales at the baseline assessment (T1) and after approximately 4 months (T2), including The Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety-Depression Scale; The Scale of Psychosocial Experience Related to COVID-19, The Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5; and self-designed questionnaires evaluating the severity of COVID-related medical and neurocognitive symptoms and pre-pandemic variables. Exploratory factor analysis revealed five factors of COVID-19 symptoms: flu-like, respiratory, cold, neurological, and neurocognitive. Hierarchical logistic regression showed that besides selected control variables (anxiety and depression, presence of PTSD-like symptoms, COVID-related stigma in T1), neurocognitive symptoms of COVID-19 in T1 but not other symptoms of the disease were a significant predictor of the presence of PTSD-like symptom in T2. Findings suggest a need for a comprehensive neurocognitive assessment of people diagnosed with COVID-19 and prompt interventions targeting the prevention of potential risks for long-term PTSD-like states at the community level.

GaN nanowires grown on metal substrates have attracted increasing interest for a wide range of applications. Herein, we report GaN nanowires grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on thin polycrystalline ZrN buffer layers, sputtered onto Si(111) substrates. The nanowire orientation was studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and then described within a model as a function of the Ga beam angle, nanowire tilt angle, and substrate rotation. We show that vertically aligned nanowires grow faster than inclined nanowires, which leads to an interesting effect of geometrical selection of the nanowire orientation in the directional molecular beam epitaxy technique. After a given growth time, this effect depends on the nanowire surface density. At low density, the nanowires continue to grow with random orientations as nucleated. At high density, the effect of preferential growth induced by the unidirectional supply of the material in MBE starts to dominate. Faster growing nanowires with smaller tilt angles shadow more inclined nanowires that grow slower. This helps to obtain more regular ensembles of vertically oriented GaN nanowires despite their random position induced by the metallic grains at nucleation. The obtained dense ensembles of vertically aligned GaN nanowires on ZrN/Si(111) surfaces are highly relevant for device applications. Importantly, our results are not specific for GaN nanowires on ZrN buffers, and should be relevant for any nanowires that are epitaxially linked to the randomly oriented surface grains in the directional molecular beam epitaxy.

Given the high mortality of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), having severe COVID-19 may be a life-threatening event, especially for individuals at high risk of complications. Therefore, in the article we try to answer two questions that are relevant to public mental health: Can we define groups who are at higher risk of developing pandemic-related PTSD? How can health specialists prepare for it? Given the results of previous research on PTSD in epidemic (e.g., SARS) survivors, we suggest that mental health professionals in countries touched by the pandemic should prepare for an increase in the PTSD prevalence, specifically in: individuals who have had severe COVID-19; family members of these patients and of patients who have died; and frontline healthcare workers witnessing COVID-19 patients' sudden deaths, or numerous life-threatening situations. We postulate that these groups at risk should be routinely screened for PTSD in primary medical and pediatric care. Mental health services should prepare for providing therapeutic interventions for individuals with PTSD in the vulnerable groups, and support to their families, especially children.

We present detailed Raman studies of graphene deposited on gallium nitride nanowires with different variations in height. Our results indicate that different density and height of nanowires impact graphene properties such as roughness, strain, and carrier concentration as well as density and type of induced defects. Tracing the manifestation of those interactions is important for the application of novel heterostructures. A detailed analysis of Raman spectra of graphene deposited on different nanowire substrates shows that bigger differences in nanowires height increase graphene strain, while a higher number of nanowires in contact with graphene locally reduces the strain. Moreover, the value of graphene carrier concentration is found to be correlated with the density of nanowires in contact with graphene. The lowest concentration of defects is observed for graphene deposited on nanowires with the lowest density. The contact between graphene and densely arranged nanowires leads to a large density of vacancies. On the other hand, grain boundaries are the main type of defects in graphene on rarely distributed nanowires. Our results also show modification of graphene carrier concentration and strain by different types of defects present in graphene. Therefore, the nanowire substrate is promising not only for strain and carrier concentration engineering but also for defect engineering.

We demonstrate that a GaN nanowire array can be used for efficient charge transfer between the organic photovoltaic layer and silicon in a Si/GaN/P3HT:PC71BM inverted hybrid heterostructure. The band alignment of such a material combination is favorable to facilitate exciton dissociation, carrier separation and electron transport into Si. The ordered nature of the GaN array helps to mitigate the intrinsic performance limitations of the organic active layer. The dependence of photovoltaic performance enhancement on the morphology of the nanostructure with nanowire diameters 30, 50, 60, 100 and 150 nm was studied in detail. The short circuit current was enhanced by a factor of 4.25, while an open circuit voltage increase by 0.32 volts was achieved compared to similar planar layers.

The objective of the study was to examine additive and synergistic effects of age and HIV infection on resting state (RS) intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) of the brain. We also aimed to assess relationships with neurocognition and determine clinical-, treatment-, and health-related factors moderating intrinsic brain activity in aging HIV-positive (HIV+) individuals. The current report presents data on 54 HIV+ individuals (age M = 41, SD = 12 years) stabilized on cART and 54 socio-demographically matched healthy (HIV-) comparators (age M = 43, SD = 12 years), with cohort education mean of 16 years (SD = 12). Age at seroconversion ranged 20-55 years old. ANOVA assessed additive and synergistic effects of age and HIV in 133 ROIs. Bivariate statistics examined relationships of FC indices vulnerable to age-HIV interactions and neurocognitive domains T-scores (attention, executive, memory, psychomotor, semantic skills). Multivariate logistic models determined covariates of FC. This study found no statistically significant age-HIV effects on RS-FC after correcting for multiple comparisons except for synergistic effects on connectivity within cingulo-opercular network (CON) at the trending level. However, for uncorrected RS connectivity analyses, we observed HIV-related strengthening between regions of fronto-parietal network (FPN) and default mode network (DMN), and particular DMN regions and sensorimotor network (SMN). Simultaneously, FC weakening was observed within FPN and between other regions of DMN-SMN, in HIV+ vs. HIV- individuals. Ten ROI pairs revealed age-HIV interactions, with FC decreasing with age in HIV+, while increasing in controls. FC correlated with particular cognitive domains positively in HIV+ vs. negatively in HIV- group. Proportion of life prior-to-after HIV-seroconversion, post-infection years, and treatment determined within-FPN and SMN-DMN FC. In sum, highly functioning HIV+/cART+ patients do not reveal significantly altered RS-FC from healthy comparators. Nonetheless, the current findings uncorrected for multiple comparisons suggest that HIV infection may lead to simultaneous increases and decreases in FC in distinct brain regions even in patients successfully stabilized on cART. Moreover, RS-fMRI ROI-based analysis can be sensitive to age-HIV interactions, which are especially pronounced for inter-network FC in relation to neurocognition. Aging and treatment-related factors partially explain RS-FC in aging HIV+ patients.

OBJECTIVE: Findings on the influence of age and HIV on brain and cognition remain equivocal, particularly in aviremic subjects without other age or HIV-related comorbidities. We aimed to (a) examine the effect of HIV status and age on structural brain measurements and cognition, and (b) apply the machine learning technique to identify brain morphometric and cognitive features that are most discriminative between aviremic subjects with HIV on stable combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) and healthy controls. METHOD: Fifty-three HIV-seropositive patients and 62 healthy controls underwent neuropsychological testing (executive functions, attention, memory, learning, psychomotor speed, fluency) and volumetric MRI scans. Voxel-based morphometry, ANCOVAs, machine learning, and multivariate regression were conducted to determine the between group differences in terms of relationship of HIV status, age, and their interaction on neurocognitive and structural brain measures. RESULTS: Volume and gray matter (GM) thickness of the caudate, parahippocampus, insula, and inferior frontal gyrus were smaller in seropositive subjects in comparison with healthy controls (HC). They also performed worse in complex attention and cognitive fluency tasks. Support vector machine (SVM) analysis revealed that the best between-groups classification accuracy was obtained based on cognitive scores encompassing complex attention and psychomotor speed, as well as volumetric measures of white matter and total gray matter; third, fourth, and lateral ventricles; amygdala; caudate; and putamen. Both voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and regression analysis yielded that HIV and aging independently increase brain vulnerability and cognitive worsening. CONCLUSION: Patients with HIV on effective cART demonstrate smaller volumetric measures and worse cognitive functioning relative to seronegative individuals. In 2013 the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) test guideline (236) for fish embryo acute toxicity (FET) was adopted. It determines the acute toxicity of chemicals to embryonic fish. Previous studies show a good correlation of FET with the standard acute fish toxicity (AFT) test; however, the potential of the FET test to predict AFT, which is required by the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation (EC 1907/2006) and the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation (EC 1272/2008), has not yet been fully clarified. In 2015 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) requested that a consultant perform a scientific analysis of the applicability of FET to predict AFT. The purpose was to compare the toxicity of substances to fish embryos and to adult fish, and to investigate whether certain factors (e.g., physicochemical properties, modes of action, or chemical structures) could be used to define the applicability boundaries of the FET test. Given the limited data availability, the analysis focused on organic substances. The present critical review summarizes the main findings and discusses regulatory application of the FET test under REACH. Given some limitations (e.g., neurotoxic mode of action) and/or remaining uncertainties (e.g., deviation of some narcotic substances), it has been found that the FET test alone is currently not sufficient to meet the essential information on AFT as required by the REACH regulation. However, the test may be used within weight-of-evidence approaches together with other independent, relevant, and reliable sources of information. The present review also discusses further research needs that may overcome the remaining uncertainties and help to increase acceptance of FET as a replacement for AFT in the future. For example, an increase in the availability of data generated according to OECD test guideline 236 may provide evidence of a higher predictive power of the test. This study examined the effects of age and HIV infection on the resting state (RS) functional connectivity (FC) of the brain and cognitive functioning. The objective was to evaluate the moderating role of age and HIV on the relationship between RS-FC and cognition. To examine RS-FC we implemented the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Regional Homogeneity (ReHo). Neurocognition was evaluated with comprehensive battery of standardized neuropsychological tests. Age and HIV were entered as the independent variables. The independent effects of age, HIV, and interaction effects of age-HIV on RS-fMRI measures (ICA, ReHo) were tested in 108 participants (age M = 42). RS-FC indices that exhibited age-HIV interactions were entered into further analysis. Bivariate correlation analysis was performed between the retained RS-FC indices and T-scores of neurocognitive domains (Attention, Executive, Memory, Psychomotor, Semantic Skills). Multivariate regression modeling determined the impact of age and HIV on these relationships. We found that in the ICA measures, HIV-seropositivity was decreasing RS-FC in the left middle occipital gyrus (p < .001). Age-HIV interaction was observed in the left superior frontal gyrus (LSupFrontG), where FC was decreasing with age in HIV+ (p < .001) and increasing in HIV- (p = .031). ReHo indices did not reveal significant effects. HIV strengthened the relationship between RS-FC in LSupFrontG, Memory and Psychomotor Factor scores. Aging weakened those relationships only in control group. In sum, age-HIV interaction effects are prominent rather in remote than local RS-FC. Seroconversion strengthens relationships between intrinsic brain activity and neurocognition, but no acceleration with years of age was noted in HIV+ individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM) is a complex, high-level cognitive function that allows people to infer the cognitive and affective mental states of others. Previous studies have produced limited and frequently contradictory findings on the neuropsychological underpinnings of ToM performance in patients with stroke. The aim of the present study is to investigate neuropsychological mechanisms of cognitive and affective theory of mind dysfunctions in patients with stroke. METHOD: Fifty-eight patients with stroke and 22 healthy controls matched in age, gender, and education level underwent robust neuropsychological examination of their pragmatic abilities, executive functions, attention, memory, psychomotor speed, and visuospatial abilities as well as a cognitive and affective ToM assessment. RESULTS: Patients with stroke demonstrated impaired performance in all ToM tasks. While pragmatic competence and, to a lesser degree, executive functions had the strongest contribution to ToM impairments, attention and general cognitive functioning did not directly affect mentalizing abilities, as demonstrated by a path analysis. Our study reveals the different roles of cognitive functions in cognitive and affective components of ToM. Executive functions contributed only to the cognitive components of ToM. CONCLUSION: Deficits in cognitive aspects of ToM are best explained by impairment of pragmatic competence and executive functions. This paper investigates the usefulness of wild boar (Sus scrofa) hair as a non-invasive indicator of mercury pollution. Samples were collected in two hunting seasons (1998/1999 and 1999/2000) by hunters from four differently polluted regions of Poland. Mercury content was determined by AAS methods. Different washing procedures were compared. De-ionised water was found to be suitable for the removal of exogenous mercury sources in hair analysis. Metal distribution along hair was analysed. It was found that problems arising from differences in distribution of metal along a single hair strand as well as differences in the hair colour can be eliminated through the careful homogenisation of the samples before analysis. The influences of physiological, ecological and environmental factors that might significantly affect the obtained results (age, gender, season, location of habitat and diet of the sampled animals) were estimated and taken into account. The present study revealed that female hair contained a higher amount of mercury than male hair. Moreover the highest mercury content was found in young individuals between 1 and 2 years of age. A positive correlation of the present results with environmental data taken from the State Offices showed an influence of environmental pollution on the mercury level in wild boar hair.

In this work, the influence of micro- and macro-deformation profiles in GaN nanowires (NWs) on the angular intensity distribution of X-ray diffraction are studied theoretically. The calculations are performed by using kinematical theory of X-ray diffraction and assuming the deformation decays exponentially from the NW/substrate interface. Theoretical modeling of X-ray scattering from NWs with different deformation profiles are carried out. We show that the shape of the (002) 2θ/ω X-ray diffraction profile (XDP) is defined by initial deformation at the NW's bottom and its relaxation depth given by the decay depth of the exponential deformation profile. Also, we demonstrate that macro-deformation leads to XDP shift, whereas micro-deformations are the cause of XDP's asymmetry and its symmetrical broadening. A good correlation between calculated and experimental XDP from self-assembled GaN NWs on Si(111) substrate was achieved by taking into account all parameters of micro- and macro-deformation profiles.

Three neuropsychological theories have been developed according to a possible existence of a similar pattern of cognitive decline in elderly individuals and patients with brain damage. The respective neuropsychological theories attribute age-related deficits to: (a) dysfunction of the frontal lobes, (b) temporo-parietal dysfunction, or (c) decline of right-hemisphere functions. In the present study, we examined which of these theories best explains the cognitive patterns of normal elderly subjects older than 80 years of age (old elderly). Thirty normal old elderly subjects, 14 patients with subcortical vascular dementia, 14 with mild Alzheimer's disease, 15 with damage of the right hemisphere of the brain, and 20 young elderly controls participated. A test battery covering the main cognitive domains was administered to all participants. A hierarchical cluster analysis revealed five groups of individuals with different cognitive patterns across the whole sample. Old elderly subjects were assigned to four groups according to: (a) preserved overall cognitive performance, (b) processing speed decline, (c) attention decline, or (d) executive impairment. The results of the study are most congruent with models emphasizing frontal-lobe cortical-subcortical and fronto-parietal changes in old age. The results also indicate considerable heterogeneity in the cognitive patterns of normal old elderly adults.

This paper summarises the aquatic ecotoxicity data submitted in the REACH(1) registration dossiers and disseminated by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA(2)). The analysis describes both the guidelines and the species mostly used by registrants. Non-OECD guidelines have been extensively used, in particular in covering of fish and aquatic invertebrate studies, but the main concern is that in 22-36% of the cases, depending on the endpoint, no information on the methodological approach and potential equivalences to test guidelines has been provided. As expected, most studies were conducted with those species typically used in laboratory ecotoxicity testing; nevertheless, the database provides a broad range of available species, covering the most relevant taxonomic groups for both freshwater and marine systems, although most are just occasionally used. This species diversity is essential for higher tier testing strategies, including the use of Species Sensitivity Distribution approaches. The assessment suggests that collecting available information has been the main approach used by registrants to fulfil their REACH information requirements for this first REACH registration deadline. Many studies are disclosed for the first time, and all are available through searchable web tools.

REACH(1) entered into force in June 2007 and has hence been operational for six years. With the first registration deadline in November 2010, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA(2)) has received a large amount of scientific and administrative information related to chemical substances. In order to understand what type of data on ecotoxicity endpoints was submitted under the REACH framework a detailed analysis of the availability and content of relevant information was performed. To avoid unnecessary testing, the REACH Regulation provides registrants with the possibility to build testing strategies and to adopt the standard information requirements based on the specific conditions listed in the regulation. The types of information submitted by registrants to fulfil data requirements for aquatic, sediment and terrestrial toxicity endpoints were analysed. The REACH database analysis confirms large differences in the availability of experimental aquatic versus sediment and soil ecotoxicity data. Information requirements on aquatic organisms are mainly covered by experimental data, while those for sediment and soil are mostly waived.

This paper summarises the terrestrial ecotoxicity data submitted in the REACH registration dossiers and disseminated by ECHA. The analysis describes both the guidelines and the test species mostly used by registrants. REACH information requirements in relation to the effects on terrestrial organisms encompass three trophic levels; invertebrates, plants and micro-organisms, and the study of both long and short-term exposure. The results observed for soil invertebrates showed that on one hand there was a clear prevalence for testing on the species recommended by the standard test guidelines. On the other, the reporting included a large variety of species from very different families, demonstrating the feasibility for conducting toxicity tests on a number of relevant groups e.g. for species sensitivity distribution approaches. Standard toxicity testing with terrestrial plants under REACH follows a different approach and requires simultaneous testing on several species, using the same test conditions, adapted to each species, if needed. The test methods used to conduct the studies were only reported for 30% of cases. The most extensively reported test guidelines for terrestrial plants were OECD 208, ISO 11269-1 and ISO 11269-1. Information requirements for soil micro-organisms under REACH are related to the analysis of functional endpoints instead of on species or taxa. As recommended in REACH, OECD 216 and OECD 217 were the most often used test methods for soil micro-organisms. But overall, the test method was reported for only about 40% of the experimental studies. Moreover, it is noted that information on potential effects on soil micro-organisms is available for a limited number of REACH registered substances. The assessment suggests that providing waiving justifications and collecting available information, which in many cases might be well used for covering standard REACH data requirements, have been the main approaches used by registrants for the first REACH registration deadline.

For the first REACH registration deadline, companies have submitted registrations with relevant hazard and exposure information for substances at the highest tonnage level (above 1000 tonnes per year). At this tonnage level, information on the long-term toxicity of a substance to sediment organisms is required. There are a number of available test guidelines developed and accepted by various national/international organisations, which can be used to investigate long-term toxicity to sediment organisms. However instead of testing, registrants may also use other options to address toxicity to sediment organisms, e.g. weight of evidence approach, grouping of substances and read-across approaches, as well as substance-tailored exposure-driven testing. The current analysis of the data provided in ECHA database focuses on the test methods applied and the test organisms used in the experimental studies to assess long-term toxicity to sediment organisms. The main guidelines used for the testing of substances registered under REACH are the OECD guidelines and OSPAR Protocols on Methods for the Testing of Chemicals used in the Offshore Oil Industry: "Part A: A Sediment Bioassay using an Amphipod Corophium sp." explaining why one of the mostly used test organisms is the marine amphipod Corophium sp. In total, testing results with at least 40 species from seven phyla are provided in the database. However, it can be concluded that the ECHA database does not contain a high enough number of available experimental data on toxicity to sediment organisms for it to be used extensively by the scientific community (e.g. for development of non-testing methods to predict hazards to sediment organisms).
