RESUMO

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity, and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.

RESUMO

Materials with multiple superconducting phases are rare. Here, we report the discovery of two-phase unconventional superconductivity in CeRh2As2 Using thermodynamic probes, we establish that the superconducting critical field of its high-field phase is as high as 14 tesla, even though the transition temperature is only 0.26 kelvin. Furthermore, a transition between two different superconducting phases is observed in a c axis magnetic field. Local inversion-symmetry breaking at the cerium sites enables Rashba spin-orbit coupling alternating between the cerium sublayers. The staggered Rashba coupling introduces a layer degree of freedom to which the field-induced transition and high critical field seen in experiment are likely related.

RESUMO

We report superconducting (SC) properties of stoichiometric LiFeAs (T(c)=17 K) studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Although the vortex lattice exhibits no long-range order, well-defined SANS rocking curves indicate better ordering than in chemically doped 122 compounds. The London penetration depth lambda(ab)(0)=210+/-20 nm, determined from the magnetic field dependence of the form factor, is compared to that calculated from the ARPES band structure with no adjustable parameters. The temperature dependence of lambda(ab) is best described by a single isotropic SC gap Delta(0)=3.0+/-0.2 meV, which agrees with the ARPES value of Delta(0)(ARPES)=3.1+/-0.3 meV and corresponds to the ratio 2Delta/k(B)T(c)=4.1+/-0.3, approaching the weak-coupling limit predicted by the BCS theory. This classifies LiFeAs as a weakly coupled single-gap superconductor.

RESUMO

The Weyl semimetal NbP exhibits an extremely large magnetoresistance and an ultra-high mobility. The large magnetoresistance originates from a combination of the nearly perfect compensation between electron- and hole-type charge carriers and the high mobility, which is relevant to the topological band structure. In this work we report on temperature- and field-dependent thermopower and thermal conductivity experiments on NbP. Additionally, we carried out complementary heat capacity, magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. We found a giant adiabatic magnetothermopower with a maximum of [Formula: see text] at 50 K in a field of 9 T. Such large effects have been observed rarely in bulk materials. We further observe pronounced quantum oscillations in both thermal conductivity and thermopower. The obtained frequencies compare well with our heat capacity and magnetization data.

The following substances were tested for their influence on granulocyte function: 8 sera that contained human granulocyte-specific alloantibodies against the antigens NA1, NA2 and NB1, two HLA antisera, and the monoclonal antibodies W6/32 and CLB-FcR-gran 1. The effects examined included spontaneous and directed migration, immune phagocytosis inhibition and the generation of oxygen radicals. Using the under-agarose technique, spontaneous migration of sensitized granulocytes was normal. For all antibodies tested, the chemotactic index for N-fMLP, LTB4 and opsonized zymosan was greater than 1. Granulocyte immune phagocytosis of sensitized sheep red blood cells was strongly inhibited by all alloantisera and monoclonal antibodies. The generation of oxygen radicals after triggering the respiratory burst with sensitized sheep red blood cells was also strongly inhibited in the chemiluminescence assay. Immune phagocytosis and chemiluminescent response of granulocytes lacking the corresponding antigen of the tested alloantibodies were not affected. Since sensitization of neutrophils with F(ab')2 fragments of the monoclonal antibodies W6/32 and CLB-FcR-gran 1 showed lower inhibition of generation of oxygen radicals after triggering, Fc-dependent interaction with the target cells seems to be necessary for inhibition. Our results suggest that binding of NA1-, NA2- or NB1-specific alloantibodies to granulocytes not only causes neutropenia, but also impairs granulocyte function.
