RESUMO

The FOEDUS-EOEO platform was relaunched in 2015 to allocate deceased donor organs across European borders when there are no suitable recipients in the donor's country. We analyzed organ offers from 01.06.2015-31.12.2021 and present the number of offers and transplants, and utilization as percentage of transplanted organs. 1,483 organs were offered, 287 were transplanted (19.4% utilization). Yearly number of offers and transplants increased from 2017 to 2021, while utilization stabilized after 2018. Utilization was highest for organs offered by Slovakia (47.2%), followed for organs offered by Lithuania, France, Greece, and Czechia (19.3%-22.9%). The most frequently offered organ was the heart (n = 405; 27.3%), followed by the lungs (n = 369; 24.9%) and the liver (n = 345; 23.3%). Utilization differed significantly by organ type (highest for liver, 35.7%; followed by heart, 18.8%; and kidney, 18.3%) and by donor age (highest for 1 to 5 year-old donors (25.0%)). FOEDUS-EOEO allowed for many European patients receiving a long-awaited transplant, especially for very young pediatric patients waiting for a liver, a heart, or a kidney. The increasing number of participating countries has increased both the number of offered organs and, to a lesser extent, the number of transplanted organs.

RESUMO

Commercially available LaFeO3 powder was processed using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The results of the dielectric measurement showed high permittivity, but this was strongly frequency-dependent and was also accompanied by a high loss tangent. The chemical purity of the powder and changes induced by the SPS process influenced the stability of the dielectric parameters of the bulk compacts. A microstructure with a homogeneous grain size and a certain porosity was produced. The microhardness of the sintered LaFeO3 was rather high, about 8.3 GPa. All the results are in reasonable agreement with the literature related to the production of LaFeO3 using different techniques. At frequencies as low as 100 Hz, the material behaved like a colossal permittivity ceramic, but this character was lost with the increasing frequency. On the other hand, it exhibited persistent DC photoconductivity after illumination with a standard bulb.

RESUMO

Calcium titanate (CaTiO3) powder was compacted by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The resulting products were subjected to the phase stability study and dielectric characterization. The change in temperature of SPS between 1100 °C and 1250 °C had a clear and straightforward effect on density, porosity, relative permittivity, loss tangent, and DC resistivity. Since the SPS itself introduces certain oxygen deficiency into Ti-perovskites, all samples were annealed after SPS. However, this post-processing did not mask the effects of the SPS regime. Optical reflectance measurements were completed to compare and quantify the sample coloration and support the dielectric results with corresponding optical band gap estimations. Subtle changes in the CaTiO3 crystal lattice arrangement, completed between 1150 °C and 1250 °C and documented in the literature for conventionally sintered samples, could not be confirmed for SPS-prepared calcium titanate. The novelty of this research work is in producing very stable dielectric ceramics and an indication of the SPS processing parameters suitable for this. The best sample showed at 1 MHz frequency the combination of relative permittivity 370, loss tangent 0.008, and DC resistivity 3 × 1012 Ωm.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate prevalence of neurovascular contacts (NVCs) at the rostral medulla oblongata in normotensive and hypertensive subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three patients with severe essential hypertension and 45 normotensive subjects were matched for age, sex, and body mass index. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging included transverse and coronal T2-weighted turbo spin-echo (section thickness, 3.0 mm), transverse three-dimensional (3D) time-of-flight MR angiographic (section thickness, 0.8 mm), and 3D constructive interference in steady state (CISS) (section thickness, 1.0 mm) sequences. All MR images were reviewed by two radiologists who were blinded to the hypertensive status of subjects. Presence and degree of NVC at rostral medulla and left/right rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) were evaluated together with conspicuity of anatomic structures on MR images. Differences in prevalence of NVC among normotensive and hypertensive subjects were tested for statistical significance (P <.05) by using nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Among hypertensive patients, 34 (79%) of 43 showed NVC of rostral medulla at any location, and 14 (33%) of 43 had NVC at the left RVLM. In controls (normotensive subjects), 35 (78%) of 45 showed NVC of rostral medulla, and 17 (38%) of 45 had NVC at left RVLM. Prevalence of NVC was not significantly different between both groups at any location of rostral medulla. Compared with T2-weighted turbo spin-echo and 3D time-of-flight MR imaging sequences, 3D CISS offered better contrast resolution of neural and vascular structures and superior delineation of outer vascular contours. CONCLUSION: Vascular compression of the rostral medulla oblongata is a frequent finding in both hypertensive and normotensive subjects. Results of this study do not support NVC at left RVLM as an etiologic factor in essential hypertension.
