RESUMO

We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the electron dynamics and body-frame angular dependence of valence photo-single ionization of CF4 and subsequent dissociation into CF3+ and F. Ionization from a valence t2 orbital shows overlapping shape resonances close to threshold that couple to the same total symmetry, leading to striking changes in the photoelectron angular distributions when viewed in the body-frame.

RESUMO

Particle cascades initiated by ultrahigh energy neutrinos in the lunar regolith will emit an electromagnetic pulse with a time duration of the order of nanoseconds through a process known as the Askaryan effect. It has been shown that in an observing window around 150 MHz there is a maximum chance for detecting this radiation with radio telescopes commonly used in astronomy. In 50 h of observation time with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope array we have set a new limit on the flux of neutrinos, summed over all flavors, with energies in excess of 4x10(22) eV.

RESUMO

Impact craters on Triton are scarce owing to the relatively recent resurfacing by icy melts. The most heavily cratered surface has a crater density about the same as the lunar maria. The transition diameter from simple to complex craters occurs at a diameter of about 11 kilometers, and the depth-diameter relationship is similar to that of other icy satellites when gravity is taken into account. The crater size-frequency distribution has a differential -3 slope (cumulative -2 slope) and is the same as that for the fresh crater population on Miranda. The most heavily cratered region is on the leading hemisphere in Triton's orbit. Triton may have a leading-trailing asymmetry in its crater population. Based primarily on the similarity of size distributions on Triton and Miranda and the relatively young surface on Triton, the source of Triton's craters is probably comets. The very peculiar size distribution of sharp craters on the "cantaloupe" terrain and other evidence suggests they are volcanic explosion craters.

RESUMO

Mercury has a heavily cratered surface cotntaining basins up to at least 1300 kilometers diameter flooded with mare-like material. Many features are closely similar to those on the moon, but significant structural differences exist. Major chemical differentiation before termination of accretion is implied.

RESUMO

The Mariner 10 television camieras imaged the planet Venus in the visible and near ultraviolet for a period of 8 days at resolutions ranging from 100 meters to 130 kilometers. Tle general pattern of the atmospheric circulation in the upper tropospheric/lower stratospheric region is displayed in the pictures. Atmospheric flow is symmetrical between north and south hemispheres. The equatorial motions are zonal (east-west) at approxiimnately 100 meters per second, consistent with the previously inferred 4-day retrograde rotation. Angular velocity increases with latitude. The subsolar region, and the region downwind from it, show evidence of large-scale convection that persists in spite of the main zonal motion. Dynamical interaction between the zonal motion and the relatively stationary region of convection is evidenced by bowlike waves.

RESUMO

The surface morphology and optical properties of Mercury resemble those of the moon in remarkable detail and record a very similar sequence of events. Chemical and mineralogical similarity of the outer layers of Mercury and the moon is implied; Mercury is probably a differentiated planet with a large iron-rich core. Differentiation is inferred to have occurred very early. No evidence of atmospheric modification of landforms has been found. Large-scale scarps and ridges unlike lunar or martian features may reflect a unique period of planetary compression near the end of heavy bombardment by small planetesimals.

RESUMO

Voyager 2, during its encounter with the Jupiter system, provided images that both complement and supplement in important ways the Voyager 1 images. While many changes have been observed in Jupiter's visual appearance, few, yet significant, changes have been detected in the principal atmospheric currents. Jupiter's ring system is strongly forward scattering at visual wavelengths and consists of a narrow annulus of highest particle density, within which is a broader region in which the density is lower. On Io, changes are observed in eruptive activity, plume structure, and surface albedo patterns. Europa's surface retains little or no record of intense meteorite bombardment, but does reveal a complex and, as yet, little-understood system of overlapping bright and dark linear features. Ganymede is found to have at least one unit of heavily cratered terrain on a surface that otherwise suggests widespread tectonism. Except for two large ringed basins, Callisto's entire surface is heavily cratered.

RESUMO

Jupiter's nonthermal microwave emission, as measured by a global network of 11 radio telescopes, increased dramatically during the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts. The increase was wavelength-dependent, varying from approximately 10 percent at 70 to 90 centimeters to approximately 45 percent at 6 and 36 centimeters. The radio spectrum hardened (flattened toward shorter wavelengths) considerably during the week of impacts and continued to harden afterward. After the week of cometary impacts, the flux density began to subside at all wavelengths and was still declining 3 months later. Very Large Array and Australia Telescope images of the brightness distribution showed the enhancement to be localized in longitude and concentrated near the magnetic equator. The evidence therefore suggests that the increase in flux density was caused by a change in the resident particle population, for example, through an energization or spatial redistribution of the emitting particles.

RESUMO

Voyager 2 photography has complemented that of Voyager I in revealing many additional characteristics of Saturn and its satellites and rings. Saturn's atmosphere contains persistent oval cloud features reminiscent of features on Jupiter. Smaller irregular features track out a pattern of zonal winds that is symmetric about Saturn's equator and appears to extend to great depth. Winds are predominantly eastward and reach 500 meters per second at the equator. Titan has several haze layers with significantly varying optical properties and a northern polar "collar" that is dark at short wavelengths. Several satellites have been photographed at substantially improved resolution. Enceladus' surface ranges from old, densely cratered terrain to relatively young, uncratered plains crossed by grooves and faults. Tethys has a crater 400 kilometers in diameter whose floor has domed to match Tethys' surface curvature and a deep trench that extends at least 270 degrees around Tethys' circumference. Hyperion is cratered and irregular in shape. Iapetus' bright, trailing hemisphere includes several dark-floored craters, and Phoebe has a very low albedo and rotates in the direction opposite to that of its orbital revolution with a period of 9 hours. Within Saturn's rings, the "birth" of a spoke has been observed, and surprising azimuthal and time variability is found in the ringlet structure of the outer B ring. These observations lead to speculations about Saturn's internal structure and about the collisional and thermal history of the rings and satellites.

RESUMO

As Voyager 1 flew through the Saturn system it returned photographs revealing many new and surprising characteristics of this complicated community of bodies. Saturn's atmosphere has numerous, low-contrast, discrete cloud features and a pattern of circulation significantly different from that of Jupiter. Titan is shrouded in a haze layer that varies in thickness and appearance. Among the icy satellites there is considerable variety in density, albedo, and surface morphology and substantial evidence for endogenic surface modification. Trends in density and crater characteristics are quite unlike those of the Galilean satellites. Small inner satellites, three of which were discovered in Voyager images, interact gravitationally with one another and with the ring particles in ways not observed elsewhere in the solar system. Saturn's broad A, B, and C rings contain hundreds of "ringlets," and in the densest portion of the B ring there are numerous nonaxisymmetric features. The narrow F ring has three components which, in at least one instance, are kinked and crisscrossed. Two rings are observed beyond the F ring, and material is seen between the C ring and the planet.

RESUMO

The cameras aboard Voyager 1 have provided a closeup view of the Jupiter system, revealing heretofore unknown characteristics and phenomena associated with the planet's atmosphere and the surfaces of its five major satellites. On Jupiter itself, atmospheric motions-the interaction of cloud systems-display complex vorticity. On its dark side, lightning and auroras are observed. A ring was discovered surrounding Jupiter. The satellite surfaces display dramatic differences including extensive active volcanismn on Io, complex tectonism on Ganymnede and possibly Europa, and flattened remnants of enormous impact features on Callisto.

RESUMO

Voyager 2 images of the southern hemisphere of Uranus indicate that submicrometersize haze particles and particles of a methane condensation cloud produce faint patterns in the atmosphere. The alignment of the cloud bands is similar to that of bands on Jupiter and Saturn, but the zonal winds are nearly opposite. At mid-latitudes (-70 degrees to -27 degrees ), where winds were measured, the atmosphere rotates faster than the magnetic field; however, the rotation rate of the atmosphere decreases toward the equator, so that the two probably corotate at about -20 degrees . Voyager images confirm the extremely low albedo of the ring particles. High phase angle images reveal on the order of 10(2) new ringlike features of very low optical depth and relatively high dust abundance interspersed within the main rings, as well as a broad, diffuse, low optical depth ring just inside the main rings system. Nine of the newly discovered small satellites (40 to 165 kilometers in diameter) orbit between the rings and Miranda; the tenth is within the ring system. Two of these small objects may gravitationally confine the e ring. Oberon and Umbriel have heavily cratered surfaces resembling the ancient cratered highlands of Earth's moon, although Umbriel is almost completely covered with uniform dark material, which perhaps indicates some ongoing process. Titania and Ariel show crater populations different from those on Oberon and Umbriel; these were probably generated by collisions with debris confined to their orbits. Titania and Ariel also show many extensional fault systems; Ariel shows strong evidence for the presence of extrusive material. About halfof Miranda's surface is relatively bland, old, cratered terrain. The remainder comprises three large regions of younger terrain, each rectangular to ovoid in plan, that display complex sets of parallel and intersecting scarps and ridges as well as numerous outcrops of bright and dark materials, perhaps suggesting some exotic composition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this prospective controlled study was to compare the effects of two therapies for menopause on factor VII (FVII) and hemostatic variables. METHODS: Postmenopausal women were assigned to receive one of the following treatments: transdermal estradiol (TTS E2; 50 microg) combined in a continuous sequential regimen with oral medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA; 10 mg/day for 12 days) (group A; n = 20), tibolone (2.5 mg/day) (group B; n = 21) or placebo (group C; n = 19). Sixty women completed the 1-year treatment and underwent follow-up examinations after 3, 6 and 12 months. RESULTS: TTS E2/MPA induced various changes in procoagulatory factors. At 12 months, fibrinogen, activated FVII (FVIIa) and coagulative FVII (FVIIc) had increased by 10.7, 12.9 and 3.7%, respectively. Among the fibrinolytic factors, plasminogen and alpha2-antiplasmin increased by 11.3 and 7.2%, respectively. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and antithrombin III (ATIII) did not show any significant variation. Tibolone induced some changes toward a more homogeneous antithrombotic profile. Fibrinogen, FVIIa and FVIIc decreased significantly by 7.5, 8.1 and 21.3%, respectively. Plasminogen increased (by 11.8%) and Lp(a) decreased (by 28.4%). ATIII was unchanged with tibolone therapy. CONCLUSION: Our results show that tibolone induces a significant reduction in FVIIc and Lp(a) and a greater enhancement of factors promoting fibrinolysis than the TTS E2/MPA regimen.

RESUMO

The consideration of HE and its etiology has undergone a radical turn within the past decade. At present HE is seen in the context of severe metabolic derangements, which failure of the liver, the central biochemical powerhouse of the body, must bring with it. The increased awarenesses on the biochemical mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of HE have found, step by step, their own place in a complex but consequential mosaic of events, in which amino acid and HE are tightly linked. Clinical and experimental studies are needed to further improve the knowledge in this field, nontheless a certain number of corner-stones can be identified: A profound alteration of the central nervous system neurotransmission is responsible for most, if not all, of the symptoms characterizing HE. The plasma amino acid imbalance observed in cirrhotic patients represents a 'condicio sine qua non' HE may develop. A functional impairment of the amino acid transport systems at the level of the blood-brain barrier seems to play a crucial role in causing deleterious modifications of the synaptic neurotransmission in the central nervous system. The reduction of the brain entry of the "toxic" aromatic amino acids usually obtained by parenteral administration of especially tailored amino acid mixtures is most frequently followed by awakening from HE. In conclusion, most of the results obtained have demonstrated that HE represents a research field in which progresses in the knowledge of some of the pathogenic mechanisms have brought the investigators to new therapeutic approaches which have clearly improved the prognosis of patients suffering from this severe neuropsychiatric syndrome.

RESUMO

Sucrose density gradient centrifugation in the presence or absence of Na-EDTA and at different ionic strengths allows one to obtain well-defined nucleosome subpopulations the DNA of which, examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, is in all cases hypermethylated as compared to spacer regions, but to a different extent for the different subpopulations. The various nucleosomes differ also in their content of histones and of high-mobility-group proteins, as well as in the levels of RNA polymerase activity associated with them. Such data suggest that these nucleosome subpopulations originate from chromatin fractions differently involved in gene expression.

RESUMO

In human placenta, the DNA of all subfractions of the third level of chromatin organization exhibits similar values of the methylcytosine-to-cytosine ratio. The tightly bound form of DNA methyltransferase is mostly recovered in the 'stripped loop' fraction, although, on the basis of the DNA content, the 'stripped loops' and the 'stripped matrix' appear to possess a similar amount of the enzyme. DNA methyltransferase activity is instead totally absent from the 'digested matrix', i.e., from the fraction remaining after digestion of the 'stripped matrix' with DNAase I. Upon addition of exogenous DNA methyltransferase, however, the DNA of this fraction, which is only 1% (in weight) of the total chromatin DNA and which has a length of approx. 9 kbp, can readily undergo methylation.

RESUMO

The stoichiometry of hemolysis by the polyene antibiotic lucensomycin was investigated. It appears that hemolysis occurs only when a relatively high fraction (probably between 15 and 40%) of the cholesterol sites in the erythrocyte membrane have combined with the polyene. Also in phospholipid-cholesterol vesicles the increase of permeability requires occupancy of 40-50% of the existing cholesterol sites. As for the possible cooperative effect in the hemolytic process, it is probable that several (at least 9-10) lucensomycin-cholesterol adducts must interact on each side of the membrane to form an aqueous channel; the distribution of these adducts in the erythrocyte membrane occurs, however, apparently at random.

RESUMO

H1 exerts a specific in vitro inhibitory effect on enzymic DNA methylation. The experiments reported in this paper were undertaken in order to assess whether the lower methylation level found in internucleosomal DNA compared to core DNA is the in vivo consequence of the well-known localization of this histone in the linker region, as opposed to a possible deficiency of CpG dinucleotides in linker DNA. The methyl-accepting ability of H1-depleted oligonucleosomes from human placenta and of the corresponding core particles were assayed by addition of purified DNA methyltransferase, using S-adenosylmethionine as the methyl group donor. We have found that approx. 80% of newly-incorporated methyl groups are localized in linker DNA, which is indeed a good potential substrate for enzymic DNA methylation. Addition of quasi-physiological amounts of H1 to H1-depleted oligonucleosomes markedly reduced their methyl-accepting ability, while exerting a re-condensing effect on these particles, as revealed by the distortions of their circular dichroism spectra.

RESUMO

The occurrence, upon differentiation, of a transient DNA hypomethylation has been observed in Friend erythroleukemia cells. Treatment with hexamethylenebisacetamide (HMBA) induces within 24 h a 20% hypomethylation of newly synthesized DNA, that is followed by re-methylation before completion of the differentiative process, as measured by the appearance of benzidine-positive cells. We examined a series of mutant clones which continue to grow in the presence of an inducer. Methylcytosine content of DNA was measured by HPLC, after cell labeling with [3H]uridine. We found that one of these continuously growing clones, which was still capable of hemoglobin synthesis, showed the same degree of hypomethylation as the parental one. The re-methylation process did not occur, however, unless erythroid differentiation was reverted by the removal of the inducer. In another clone which had lost the capacity to synthesize hemoglobin, no DNA hypomethylation was detectable. These experiments show that DNA hypomethylation is an early event strictly related to cell differentiation but not to cell growth arrest.

RESUMO

Histones (from calf thymus or from human placenta), if renatured in the presence of EDTA, caused a severe inhibition of in vitro methylation of double-stranded DNA (from Micrococcus luteus) by human placenta DNA methyltransferase. The absence of EDTA during the histone renaturation procedure abolished--at least in the 'physiological' range of the histones/DNA ratio--the inhibition. The H1 component was responsible for this inhibition, no effect being exerted by the other histones. H1 preparations were more effective if renatured in the presence of EDTA--90% inhibition being reached at a 0.3:1 (w/w) H1/DNA ratio. It seems likely that the requirement for the presence of EDTA during the renaturation process is correlated to its ability to induce a fairly stable ordered conformation of the histones, although this effect could also be shown with the 'inactive' H2a, H2b and H3 components, and was instead less evident with histone H1. The restriction to histone H1 of the ability to inhibit enzymic DNA methylation may account for the lower methylation levels present in the internucleosomal DNA of mammalian chromatin.
