RESUMO

The strategic and logical development of the third component (guest materials) plays a pivotal and intricate role in improving the efficiency and stability of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a novel guest material with a wide bandgap, named IDTR, is designed, synthesized, and incorporated as the third component. IDTR exhibits complementary absorption characteristics and cascade band alignment with the PM6:Y6 binary system. Morphological analysis reveals that the introduction of IDTR results in strong crystallinity, good miscibility, and proper vertical phase distribution, thereby realizing heightened and balanced charge transport behavior. Remarkably, the novel ternary OSCs have exhibited a significant enhancement in photovoltaic performance. Consequently, open-circuit voltage (VOC), short-circuit current (JSC), and fill factor (FF) have all witnessed substantial improvements with a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.94% when L8-BO replaced Y6. Beyond the pronounced improvement in photovoltaic performance, superior device stability with a T80 approaching 400 h is successfully achieved. This achievement is attributed to the synergistic interplay of IDTR, providing robust support for the overall enhancement of performance. These findings offer crucial guidance and reference for the design and development of efficient and stable OSCs.

RESUMO

In recent years, China's advanced light sources have entered a period of rapid construction and development. As modern X-ray detectors and data acquisition technologies advance, these facilities are expected to generate massive volumes of data annually, presenting significant challenges in data management and utilization. These challenges encompass data storage, metadata handling, data transfer and user data access. In response, the Data Organization Management Access Software (DOMAS) has been designed as a framework to address these issues. DOMAS encapsulates four fundamental modules of data management software, including metadata catalogue, metadata acquisition, data transfer and data service. For light source facilities, building a data management system only requires parameter configuration and minimal code development within DOMAS. This paper firstly discusses the development of advanced light sources in China and the associated demands and challenges in data management, prompting a reconsideration of data management software framework design. It then outlines the architecture of the framework, detailing its components and functions. Lastly, it highlights the application progress and effectiveness of DOMAS when deployed for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) and Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF).

RESUMO

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a malignant cancer worldwide. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as key players in the development and progression of NSCLC, and may be potential biomarkers of NSCLC. Here, we investigated the clinical significance of lncRNA oxidative stress responsive serine rich 1 antisense RNA 1 (OSER1-AS1) in peripheral blood of patients with NSCLC. OSER1-AS1 in peripheral blood of patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), and healthy subjects was detected, and the clinical diagnostic efficacy was analyzed. The correlation between OSER1-AS1 expression and clinicopathological features in patients with LUSC and LUAD was analyzed. The downstream mechanism of OSER1-AS1 was explored. The area under the ROC curve of lncRNA OSER1-AS1 and miR-1298-5p/CHSY3 in LUSC and LUAD was compared using the MedCalc analysis. OSER1-AS1 was low in peripheral blood of patients with LUSC and LUAD. The area under the ROC curve for predicting LUSC was 0.800. The area under the ROC curve for predicting LUAD was 0.728. In LUSC and LUAD, OSER1-AS1 deficiency was associated with tumor node metastasis stage, lymph node metastasis, distal metastasis, and poor prognosis. miR-1298-5p was highly expressed, while chondroitin sulfate synthase 3 (CHSY3) was lowly expressed in patients with LUSC and LUAD. miR-1298-5p had target relations with OSER1-AS1 and CHSY3. lncRNA OSER1-AS1 had a higher diagnostic value in patients with NSCLC than miR-1298-5p and CHSY3. Overall, low expression of OSER1-AS1 in peripheral blood of NSCLC patients has high clinical significance, which provides a certain reference value for NSCLC early diagnosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the level and changes in handgrip strength among preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD patients and to evaluate the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function. METHODS: A total of 1431 participants from the memory clinic of Shanghai JiaoTong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital and community were enrolled in the final analysis, including 596 AD, 288 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 547 normal individuals (NC). All participants received a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Basic (MoCA-BC), and the Chinese version of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III-CV) were used as cognitive tests. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was plotted to assess the power of handgrip strength as a screening measure to discriminate AD and MCI. RESULTS: The results showed that handgrip strength in the MCI group was significantly lower than that of NC group, and the AD group had a further decline (both P < 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression was performed with the handgrip strength quartiles, and the results showed that the ORs of AD for increasing levels of handgrip strength were 1.00, 0.58 (0.46-0.78), 0.51 (0.36-0.73), and 0.50 (0.35-0.68), showing a decreasing trend (Pfor trend < 0.01). The ROC curve demonstrated that the handgrip strength cutoff points for the identification of AD were 16.8 and 20.7 kg among the female participants above and under 70 yrs and 24.4 and 33.3 kg for the male participants above and under 70 yrs, respectively. Similarly, for the identification of MCI, cutoff points were 17.5 and 21.9 kg for females above 70 yrs and under 70 yrs, and 25.8 and 36.2 kg for males above 70 yrs and under 70 yrs, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided the further knowledge on the relationship between noncognitive features and cognition in populations with differing cognitive status, revealed that the stronger handgrip strength was associated with better performances on cognitive function. It can be speculated that handgrip strength can help early recognition of Chinese AD patients.

RESUMO

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonotic disease, which threatens public health and its incidence has increased sharply up to the present time in southern China. A survey of HFRS including in both the natural hosts and humans conducted in Qingyuan, southern China, during 2011-2013 revealed that one, two and seven confirmed cases of HFRS occurred in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. Rodent densities ranged 1.73%-12.2% and Seoul hantavirus was detected by RT-PCR only in Rattus norvegicus and Rattus losea. The positive rate in humans was 0.95% serologically and 0.94% with IIFA in 2011 and 2013, respectively. DNA fragments detected in Rattus norvegicus and Rattus losea were highly homologous with those of Seoul hantavirus HB55 (96.2%) and L99 (95.1%), respectively. Thus HFRS is becoming an emerging and dangerous disease in southern China and it is necessary to further perform molecular characterization of strains isolated from rodents and humans.

RESUMO

The ternary strategy proves effective for breakthroughs in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Elevating three photovoltaic parameters synergistically, especially the proportion-insensitive third component, is crucial for efficient ternary devices. This work introduces a molecular design strategy by comprehensively analyzing asymmetric end groups, side-chain engineering, and halogenation to explore the outstanding optoelectronic properties of the proportion-insensitive third component in efficient ternary systems. Three asymmetric non-fullerene acceptors (BTP-SA1, BTP-SA2, and BTP-SA3) are synthesized based on the Y6 framework and incorporated as the third component into the D18:Y6 binary system. BTP-SA3, featuring asymmetric terminal (difluoro-indone and dichloride-cyanoindone terminal), with branched alkyl side chains, exhibited high open-circuit voltage (VOC), balanced crystallinity and compatibility, achieving synergistic enhancements in VOC (0.862 V), short circuit-current density (JSC, 27.52 mA cm-2), fill fact (FF, 81.01%), and power convert efficiency (PCE, 19.19%). Device based on D18/Y6:BTP-SA3 (layer-by-layer processed) reached a high efficiency of 19.36%, demonstrating a high tolerance for BTP-SA3 (10-50%). This work provides novel insights into optimizing OPVs performances in multi-component systems and designing components with enhanced tolerance.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel wide-bandgap small molecule guest material, ITOA, designed and synthesized for fabricating efficient ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) ITOA complements the absorbance of the PM6:Y6 binary system, exhibiting strong crystallinity and modest miscibility. ITOA optimizes the morphology by promoting intensive molecular packing, reducing domain size, and establishing a preferred vertical phase distribution. These features contribute to improved and well-balanced charge transport, suppressed carrier recombination, and efficient exciton dissociation. Consequently, a significantly enhanced efficiency of 18.62% for the ternary device is achieved, accompanied by increased short-circuit current density (JSC), fill factor (FF), and open-circuit voltage (VOC). Building on this success, replacing Y6 with BTP-eC9 leads to an outstanding PCE of 19.33% for the ternary OSCs. Notably, the introduction of ITOA expedites the formation of the optimized morphology, resulting in an impressive PCE of 18.04% for the ternary device without any postprocessing. Moreover, the ternary device exhibits enhanced operational stability under maximum power point (MPP) tracking. This comprehensive study demonstrates that a rationally designed guest molecule can optimize morphology, reduce energy loss, and streamline the fabrication process, essential for achieving high efficiency and stability in OSCs, paving the way for practical commercial applications.

RESUMO

We report a magnetic-field sensor by merging the advantages of optical fiber Michelson interferometers with that of magnetic fluid. Compact and low-cost optical fiber Michelson interferometers were first fabricated by a high-frequency CO(2) laser, and then they were inserted into glass capillaries with water-based Fe(3)O(4) magnetic fluid as sensing elements. The sensing characteristics have been investigated and the experimental results show that the reflective spectrum of the fiber-magnetic sensor linearly shifted with the change of the magnetic-field strength that is perpendicular to the axial of the devices. The fiber-magnetic sensor with interference arm's diameter of 50 µm is most sensitive to the external magnetic field, and the sensitivity is up to 64.9 pm/mT, which is 20 times higher than that of 125 µm diameter.

RESUMO

Tomography experiments generate three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed slices from a series of two-dimensional (2D) projection images. However, the mechanical system generates joint offsets that result in unaligned 2D projections. This misalignment affects the reconstructed images and reduces their actual spatial resolution. In this study, we present a novel method called outer contour-based misalignment correction (OCMC) for correcting image misalignments in tomography. We use the sample's outer contour structure as auxiliary information to estimate the extent of misalignment in each image. This method is generic and can be used with various tomography imaging techniques. We validated our method with five datasets collected from different samples and across various tomography techniques. The OCMC method demonstrated significant advantages in terms alignment accuracy and time efficiency. As an end-to-end correction method, OCMC can be easily integrated into an online tomography data processing pipeline and facilitate feedback control in future synchrotron tomography experiments.

RESUMO

The stretchability and stretch-induced structural evolution of organic solar cells (OSCs) are pivotal for their collapsible, portable, and wearable applications, and they are mainly affected by the complex morphology of active layers. Herein, a highly ductile conjugated polymer P(NDI2OD-T2) is incorporated into the active layers of high-efficiency OSCs based on nonfullerene small molecule acceptors to simultaneously investigate the morphological, mechanical, and photovoltaic properties and structural evolution under stretching of ternary blend films with various acceptor contents. The structural robustness of the blend films is indicated by their stretch-induced structural evolution, which is monitored in real-time by a combination of in situ wide/small angle X-ray scattering. It is found that adding the soft P(NDI2OD-T2) can enhance the stretchability and structural robustness of ternary blend films by more entangled chains and tie chains to dissipate strain. Furthermore, the stretchability of the ternary blends can be superbly predicted by a 3D equivalent box model. This work provides instructive insight and guidance for designing stretchable electronics and predicting the stretchability of multicomponent blends.

RESUMO

Directed self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is widely investigated for its potential application in surface patterning. The self-assembly kinetics of BCP based on modified layers is the key to realizing structural control for obtaining highly ordered lamellar grains. In this study, morphological evolution of PS-b-PMMA films during the thermal-induced self-assembly process was investigated via the in situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) technique. In the first heating stage, reorientation of lamellar grains occurred as the temperature increased above the glass transition temperature. Then, a fast increase in the lamellar repeat period L0 was observed, which is considered as a phase separation process. Whereas the size of the lamellar grain ξ was observed to have rapidly increased in the stage wherein the temperature was held at 230 °C, the L0 was almost constant. This result indicates that the formation of ordered structure in PS-b-PMMA films was mainly determined by two periods: phase separation of block molecules followed by growth of grains in the nanodomain. In addition, it was interesting that the better-order nanodomains were obtained with thermal annealing at a faster heating rate. These findings suggest that accomplishing ordered structure control in a large area could be realized via the design of a proper heating profile.

RESUMO

BACKGROUNDS: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), one of the important clinical indicators for preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD), is primarily defined as self-perceived cognitive decline without objective evidence for cognitive impairment. However, the accuracy of their self-evaluation of cognition is unclear. This study sought to investigate the capacity for self-evaluation of own cognitive performance in SCD by applying an objective metamemory paradigm. METHODS: 147 individuals with SCD were classified into four subgroups by their subjective feeling of worse performance than peers or not (P+/-) and whether they have objectively slight cognitive impairment compared to normative data (S+/-). Metamemory scores, the amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional low-frequency fluctuation amplitude (fALFF), and cortical thickness were compared among four subgroups. Partial correlations between neuropsychological scores and neuroimaging measures were examined, controlling for age, sex, and education years. RESULTS: SCD S+P- showed the worst performance in short-term delayed recall and the worst metamemory performance, indicated by the highest value in the degree of confidence of short-term delayed recall (DOC-N4) and long-term cued recall (DOC-N6) and the worst value in relative accuracy of judgments of short-term delayed recall (ROJ-N4). ALFF values in the bilateral superior medial frontal and olfactory cortices and the left superior orbitofrontal gyrus cortex were significantly higher in SCD P- compared with SCD P+ groups (all P < 0.05, FWE-corrected, cluster-wise level). A significant S × P interaction effect in the left hippocampus and middle cingulate cortex was found for the fALFF signals (all P < 0.05, FWE-corrected, cluster-wise level). Significant interaction and main effects on cortical thickness were reported. The parahippocampal and posterior cingulate cortices were significantly decreased in SCD S+P- (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SCD S+P- showed the worst episodic memory performance, altered metamemory capacity (overconfidence and less accuracy of judgment), and altered neuroimaging measures, though they had feelings of similar performance with peers. Our results indicate that metamemory capacity is affected in a subtype of SCD with reduced cortical thickness and intensity of regional spontaneous activity in key areas for metamemory processing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cerebral embolism after lobectomy is a life-threatening complication during the early postoperative period. However, it is unclear if cerebral embolism can develop after segmentectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: We experienced a case of a 37-year-old man who demonstrated early symptom of acute ischemic stroke in early postoperative period after right upper posterior segmentectomy and performed intra-arterial mechanical thrombectomy (IAMT) successfully. CONCLUSIONS: Long and irregular pulmonary vein stump (PVS) and endothelial injury caused by surgical procedure may lead to cerebral embolism after segmentectomy. We believe that doing preoperative pulmonary vascular assessment and using appropriate surgical procedure may reduce the rate of cerebral embolism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The main clinical treatment for esophageal cancer is surgery. Since traditional open esophageal cancer resection has the disadvantages of large trauma, long recovery period, and high postoperative complication rate, its clinical application is gradually reduced. The current report of minimally invasive Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy (MIILE) is increasing. However, researchers found that patients with MIILE had a higher incidence of early delayed gastric emptying (DGE). AIM: To investigate the influencing factors of postoperative early DGE after MIILE. METHODS: A total of 156 patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer at Deyang People's Hospital were enrolled. According to the criteria of DGE, patients were assigned to a DGE group (n = 49) and a control group (n = 107). The differences between the DGE group and the control group were compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to further determine the influencing factors of postoperative early DGE. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess potential factors in predicting postoperative early DGE. RESULTS: Age, intraoperative blood loss, chest drainage time, portion of anxiety score ≥ 45 points, analgesia pump use, postoperative to enteral nutrition interval, and postoperative fluid volume in the DGE group were higher than those in the control group. Perioperative albumin level in the DGE group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Age, anxiety score, perioperative albumin level, and postoperative fluid volume were independent factors influencing postoperative early DGE, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The ROC curve analysis revealed that the area under the curve (AUC) for anxiety score was 0.720. The optimum cut-off value was 39, and the sensitivity and specificity were 80.37% and 65.31%, respectively. The AUC for postoperative fluid volume were 0.774. The optimal cut-off value was 1191.86 mL, and the sensitivity and specificity were 65.3% and 77.6%, respectively. The AUC for perioperative albumin level was 0.758. The optimum cut-off value was 26.75 g/L, and the sensitivity and specificity were 97.2% and 46.9%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Advanced age, postoperative anxiety, perioperative albumin level, and postoperative fluid volume can increase the incidence of postoperative early DGE.

RESUMO

Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) exhibits a protective effect against neural injury in vitro and in vivo. However, it has not been reported whether peripheral intravenous administration of PACAP could confer benefits in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD). Furthermore, the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for these effects are poorly understood. In the present experiments, we determined the effects and mechanism of action of intravenously administered PACAP27 in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mice. Our results indicate that intravenous injection of PACAP27 offers neuroprotective effects in the MPTP-induced PD mouse model which may not be directly associated with the expression levels of the monoamine transporters. However, this effect may be correlated with its ability to selectively regulate not only K(ATP) subunits, but D2 receptors in the striatum. Our findings suggest that the benefit of PACAP may accompany with changes not only in dopaminergic neurotransmission, but also in cholinergic neurotransmission that are relatively associated with the K(ATP) subunits and D2 receptors in the striatum.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To establish the methods of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins and Dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) compounds determination by isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS simultaneously in human placenta tissue from mothers, and assess the human exposure risk to dioxins and PBDEs in study. METHODS: Concentrations of 17 PCDD/Fs and 12 dioxin-like PCBs as well as 7 PBDEs were measured in human placenta tissue samples by isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS. SigmaTEQ (PCDD + PCDFs + PCBs) concentration using WHO-TEF factor and PBDEs concentration was calculated respectively. Risk assessment of mother exposure to dioxins and PBDEs was evaluated. RESULTS: Median of SigmaTEQ (PCDD + PCDFs + PCBs) concentration for six samples was 18.15 WHO-TEQ pg/g lipid, ranging from 5.14 - 67.01 WHO-TEQ pg/g lipid. Although the median of SigmaTEQ (PCDD + PCDFs + PCBs) was lower than that of human blood of EU and Japan, and close to that of Korea and Taiwan non-exposure as reported in the literatures, the highest SigmaTEQ (PCDD + PCDFs + PCBs) concentration of placenta sample exceeded the value of high dioxins exposure area subjects in Taiwan. The dominant contributor congener for WHO-TEQ were 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PeCDF, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8-PeCDD, PCB126, totally accounted for 65 percent of SigmaWHO-TEQ. Median and average of PBDE concentration for six samples were 2.73 ng/g lipid and 7.17 ng/g lipid, respectively, ranging from 0.95 - 25.99 ng/g lipid. BDE47 was the dominant contributor congener for the total concentration, accounted for 35 percent. CONCLUSION: The methods of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs compounds determined by isotope dilution HRGC/HRMS simultaneously in human placenta tissue from mothers were established successfully, and the human exposure risk to PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs should be surveyed for the donor with the highest SigmaTEQ (PCDD + PCDFs + PCBs) and PBDEs concentration of placenta sample in the future.

RESUMO

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: The present study was designed to investigate the correlations between the serum testosterone level and insulin sensitivity in elderly male type 2 diabetes patients with osteoporosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 elderly male patients with type 2 diabetes (type 2 diabetes group), 30 elderly male type 2 diabetes patients combined with osteoporosis (DO group) and 30 healthy elderly men (normal control group) participated in the present study. The fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) were measured. The insulin sensitivity index (ISI), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and E2/T were calculated. Then, the correlations of serum testosterone level with ISI and HOMA-IR were analyzed by statistical methods. RESULTS: The HOMA-IR, E2 and E2/T of the type 2 diabetes group and DO group were significantly increased, whereas the bone mineral density, ISI, T and sex hormone binding globulin were decreased compared with those of the normal control group. Serum testosterone levels of the type 2 diabetes group and DO group were negatively correlated to the HOMA-IR (r = -0.496, -0.506; P < 0.05), whereas they were positively correlated to the fasting insulin (r = 0.281, 0.292; P < 0.05) and ISI (r = 0.364, 0.403; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The reduced level of serum testosterone in elderly male type 2 diabetes patients with osteoporosis might promote insulin resistance.

RESUMO

@#Objective    To compare the clinical effect of single mediastinal drainage tube and both mediastinal drainage tube and closed thoracic drainage tube for the patients who received thoracoscopic radical resection of esophageal carcinoma. Methods    We enrolled 96 esophageal carcinoma patients who received thoracoscopic radical resection from June 2016 to October 2018. Of them, 49 patients were indwelt with both mediastinal drainage tube and closed thoracic drainage tube (a chest & mediastinal drainage group, a CMD group) while the other 47 patients were indwelt with single mediastinal drainage tube (a single mediastinal drainage group, a SMD group). The total drainage volume, intubation time and incidence of postoperative complications (postoperative atelectasis, pulmonary infection, pleural effusion and anastomotic leakage) between the two groups were compared. The pain score and comfort score were also compared between the two groups. Results    The total drainage volume and intubation time in the SMD group were not significantly different from those in the CMD group (1 321±421 mL vs. 1 204±545 mL, P=0.541; 6.1±3.7 d vs. 6.4 ±5.1 d, P=0.321). The incidence of postoperative complications (postoperative atelectasis, pulmonary infection, pleural effusion and anastomotic leakage) in the SMD group was not significantly different from that in the CMD group (10.6% vs. 6.1%, P=0.712; 4.3% vs. 10.2%, P=0.656; 6.4% vs. 12.2%, P=0.121; 2.1% vs. 4.1%, P=0.526). The numerical rating scale (NRS) pain  scores on the first to the fifth day after surgery and during extubation in the SMD group were significantly lower than those in the CMD group (3.2±2.1 vs. 5.1±2.4, P=0.041; 2.8±0.6 vs. 4.8±1.4, P=0.015; 2.1±0.4 vs. 4.5±0.4, P=0.019; 1.7±0.7 vs. 4.0±0.8, P=0.004; 1.8±0.7 vs. 3.2±1.2, P=0.006; 1.4±0.2 vs. 2.5±3.4, P=0.012). The VAS comfort scores in the SMD group were significantly lower than those in the CMD group (3.6±1.7 vs. 6.6±3.7, P=0.018; 2.9±2.0 vs. 5.1±3.4, P=0.007; 2.1±1.4 vs. 5.5±2.4, P=0.004; 3.0±0.9 vs. 4.6±3.8, P=0.012; 1.8±1.1 vs. 4.2±2.7, P=0.003; 2.4±3.2 vs. 5.3±1.7, P=0.020). Conclusion    The clinical effect of single mediastinal drainage tube in thoracoscopic resection of esophageal carcinoma is similar to that of both mediastinal drainage tube and closed thoracic drainage tube, but it can significantly improve the comfort of the patients.

RESUMO

We investigated economic costs from patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in Shanghai, China, which could be used as a baseline for future evaluations. Data were collected from 190 patients by interview during 1-year period. Direct medical care costs averaged approximately Chinese yuan, renminbi (RMB) 4,305 (USD 519, or EUR 410) per year per patient, of which drugs (RMB 2,677) accounted for the major costly component. Nonmedical direct costs were much less than direct health care costs, averaging approximately RMB 3,301 (USD 398, or EUR 314). Costs due to loss of productivity averaged approximately RMB 73 (USD 8.8, or EUR 7.0) per patient per year. Taken together, the overall mean annual cost for PD in our series was approximately RMB 7,679 (USD 925, or EUR 731), and these costs accounted for around half of the mean annual income. Total cost was significantly associated with the disease severity and the frequency of outpatient visits. In addition, levodopa equivalent dose (LED) and the number of drugs being taken were also closely related with the drug cost. The results indicate that the economic burden of Chinese PD patients is heavy.
