RESUMO

Cotton (Gossypium) fiber length, a key trait determining fiber yield and quality, is highly regulated by a class of recently identified phytohormones, strigolactones (SLs). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of SL signaling involved in fiber cell development are largely unknown. Here, we show that the SL signaling repressors MORE AXILLARY GROWTH2-LIKE7 (GhSMXL7) and GhSMXL8 negatively regulate cotton fiber elongation. Specifically, GhSMXL7 and GhSMXL8 inhibit the polyubiquitination and degradation of the gibberellin (GA)-triggered DELLA protein (GhSLR1). Biochemical analysis revealed that GhSMXL7 and GhSMXL8 physically interact with GhSLR1, which interferes with the association of GhSLR1 with the E3 ligase GA INSENSITIVE2 (GhGID2), leading to the repression of GA signal transduction. GhSMXL7 also interacts with the transcription factor GhHOX3, preventing its binding to the promoters of essential fiber elongation regulatory genes. Moreover, both GhSMXL7 and GhSMXL8 directly bind to the promoter regions of the AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR (ARF) genes GhARF18-10A, GhARF18-10D, and GhARF19-7D to suppress their expression. Cotton plants in which GhARF18-10A, GhARF18-10D, and GhARF19-7D transcript levels had been reduced by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) displayed reduced fiber length compared with control plants. Collectively, our findings reveal a mechanism illustrating how SL integrates GA and auxin signaling to coordinately regulate plant cell elongation at the single-cell level.

Oomycetes are filamentous microorganisms easily mistaken as fungi but vastly differ in physiology, biochemistry, and genetics. This commonly-held misconception lead to a reduced effectiveness by using conventional fungicides to control oomycetes, thus it demands the identification of novel functional genes as target for precisely design oomycetes-specific microbicide. The present study initially analyzed the available transcriptome data of the model oomycete pathogen, Phytophthora sojae, and constructed an expression matrix of 10,953 genes across the stages of asexual development and host infection. Hierarchical clustering, specificity, and diversity analyses revealed a more pronounced transcriptional plasticity during the stages of asexual development than that in host infection, which drew our attention by particularly focusing on transcripts in asexual development stage to eventually clustered them into 6 phase-specific expression modules. Three of which respectively possessing a serine/threonine phosphatase (PP2C) expressed during the mycelial and sporangium stages, a histidine kinase (HK) expressed during the zoospore and cyst stages, and a bZIP transcription factor (bZIP32) exclusive to the cyst germination stage were selected for down-stream functional validation. In this way, we demonstrated that PP2C, HK, and bZIP32 play significant roles in P. sojae asexual development and virulence. Thus, these findings provide a foundation for further gene functional annotation in oomycetes and crop disease management.

Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (UBC) is a crucial component of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, which contributes to plant growth and development. While some UBCs have been identified as potential regulators of abiotic stress responses, the underlying mechanisms of this regulation remain poorly understood. Here, we report a cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) UBC gene, GhUBC10-2, which negatively regulates the salt stress response. We found that the gain of function of GhUBC10-2 in both Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and cotton leads to reduced salinity tolerance. Additionally, GhUBC10-2 interacts with glutathione S-transferase (GST) U17 (GhGSTU17), forming a heterodimeric complex that promotes GhGSTU17 degradation. Intriguingly, GhUBC10-2 can be self-polyubiquitinated, suggesting that it possesses E3-independent activity. Our findings provide new insights into the PTM of plant GST-mediated salt response pathways. Furthermore, we found that the WRKY transcription factor GhWRKY13 binds to the GhUBC10-2 promoter and suppresses its expression under salt conditions. Collectively, our study unveils a regulatory module encompassing GhWRKY13-GhUBC10-2-GhGSTU17, which orchestrates the modulation of reactive oxygen species homeostasis to enhance salt tolerance.

Coronatine-insensitive 1 (COI1) has been identified as a target receptor of plant elicitor coronatine (COR). To discover novel plant elicitor leads, most of the potential molecules among 129 compounds discovered from the ZINC database by docking based virtual screening targeting COI1 were quinoline amides. On this lead basis, 2-benzothiadiazolylquinoline-4-carboxamides were rationally designed and synthesized for bioassay. All target compounds did not show significantly in vitro antifungal activity, compounds 4d, 4e and 4o displayed good in vivo systemic acquired resistance activity for Arabidopsis thaliana against Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis isolate Noco2 with over 80% of inhibitory rate at the concentration of 50 µM. These results indicate that 2-benzothiadiazolylquinoline-4-carboxamides are promising plant elicitor leads for further study.

Probiotics are increasingly used as starter cultures to produce fermented dairy products; however, few studies have investigated the role of probiotics in milk fermentation metabolism. The current study aimed to investigate whether adding Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis Probio-M8 (Probio-M8) as a starter culture strain could improve milk fermentation by comparing the physico-chemical characteristics and metabolomes of fermented milks produced by a commercial starter culture with and without Probio-M8. Our results showed that adding Probio-M8 shortened the milk fermentation time and improved the fermented milk texture and stability. Metabolomics analyses revealed that adding Probio-M8 affected mostly organic acid, amino acid, and fatty acid metabolism in milk fermentation. Targeted quantitative analyses revealed significant increases in various metabolites related to the sensory quality, nutritive value, and health benefits of the probiotic fermented milk, including 5 organic acids (acetic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, succinic acid, and tartaric acid), 5 essential amino acids (valine, arginine, leucine, isoleucine, and lysine), glutamic acid, and 2 essential fatty acids (α-linolenic acid and docosahexaenoic acid). Thus, applying probiotics in milk fermentation is desirable. This study has generated useful information for developing novel functional dairy products.

Optogenetics-based synthetic biology holds great promise as a cell-based therapy strategy for many clinical incurable diseases; however, precise control over genetic expression strength and timing through disease state-related closed-loop regulation remains a challenge due to the lack of reversible probes to indicate real-time metabolite fluctuations. Here, based on a novel mechanism of analyte-induced hydrophobicity regulation of energy acceptors confined in mesoporous silica, we developed a smart hydrogel platform comprising glucose reversible responsive upconversion nanoprobes and optogenetic engineered cells, in which the upconverted blue light strength was adaptively tuned through blood glucose levels to control optogenetic expressions for insulin secretion. The intelligent hydrogel system enabled convenient maintenance of glycemic homeostasis through simple near-infrared illuminations without any additional glucose concentration monitoring, which efficiently avoided genetic overexpression-induced hypoglycemia. This proof-of-concept strategy efficiently combines diagnostics with optogenetics-based synthetic biology for mellitus therapy, opening up a new avenue for nano-optogenetics.

Sinapate esters, which are induced in plants under ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation, have important roles not only in the protection against UV-B irradiation but also in the regulation of stomatal closure. Here, we speculated that sinapate esters would function in the stomatal closure of Arabidopsis thaliana in response to UV-B. We measured the stomatal aperture size of the wild-type (WT) and bright trichomes 1 (brt1) and sinapoylglucose accumulator 1 (sng1) mutants under UV-B irradiation; the latter two mutants are deficient in the conversion of sinapic acid to sinapoylglucose (SG) and SG to sinapoylmalate (SM), respectively. Both the brt1 and sng1 plants showed smaller stomatal apertures than the WT under normal light and UV-B irradiation conditions. The accumulation of SM and malate were induced by UV-B irradiation in WT and brt1 plants but not in sng1 plants. Consistently, exogenous malate application reduced UV-B-induced stomatal closure in WT, brt1 and sng1 plants. Nonetheless, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and cytosolic Ca2+ were higher in guard cells of the sng1 mutant than in those of the WT under normal white light and UV-B irradiation, suggesting that disturbance of sinapate metabolism induced the accumulation of these signaling molecules that promote stomatal closure. Unexpectedly, exogenous sinapic acid application prevented stomatal closure of WT, brt1 and sng1 plants. In summary, we hypothesize that SG or other sinapate esters may promote the UV-B-induced malate accumulation and stomatal closure, whereas sinapic acid inhibits the ROS-NO pathway that regulates UV-B-induced cytosolic Ca2+ accumulation and stomatal closure.

Acid-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization or rearrangement of isoindolinone derivatives is described. 3-Hydroxy/ethoxy-3,4-dihydro-6H-[1,4]-oxazino-[3,4-a]-isoindol-6-ones are obtained in moderate to good yields. Further acid-catalyzed intramolecular rearrangement reactions give 6H-isochromeno-[4,3-b]-pyridin-6-ones. The mild reaction conditions with convenient starting materials show broad substrate scope and provide the target compounds as novel pesticide leads with good fungicidal or systemical acquired resistance activities.

Superoxide anion (O2•-) is an important reactive oxygen species (ROS), and plays critical roles in biological systems. ER stress has close relation with many metabolic diseases, and could lead to the abnormal production of ROS including O2•-. Herein, we present an ER-targeting probe (ER-Tf) for the detection of O2•- in living cells. The probe ER-Tf used triflate as the response site for O2•-, and employed p-methylbenzenesulfonamide as ER-targeting moiety. In response to O2•-, the triflate of the probe ER-Tf converted to hydroxyl group, providing strong blue emission under the excitation of ultraviolet light. The probe ER-Tf exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to O2•-. Bioimaging experiments showed that the probe ER-Tf can be applied to detect O2•- at ER, and also demonstrated that rotenone could increase the generation of O2•- in living cells, while the O2•- level at ER showed no remarkable change during ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Children's injuries from traffic accidents have been identified as a global public health issue. Child restraint system (CRS) is a useful tool for lowering the risk of injury to children. Nevertheless, CRS usage is really low in China. The goal of the current study was to investigate the use of CRS after the legislation revised in China and to explore the influencing factors based on Information, Motivation, and Behavioral Skills model (IMB). METHODS: The study is a cross-sectional survey of parents who took their 0 to 6-year-old children for seeking primary care services at the Children Preventive Health Care Clinic of a tertiary hospital in Shandong Province, China. Parents were invited to complete the self-administered questionnaire between March and June 2022, including their knowledge, motivation, and behavioral skills, use behavior of CRS and socio-demographics. Ordinal logistic regression was used to explore the factors associated with CRS use by using SPSS software (version 26.0). RESULTS: In total, 442 parents participated in the study; 56.1% (n = 201) of the parents utilized CRS for their child passengers, however only 29.0% used CRS frequently. The result of logistic regression analysis show that parents with junior college (OR = 0.398, 95%CI: 0.185 ~ 0.857), possessing a high family economic status(OR = 0.225, 95%CI: 0.088 ~ 0.578), being trained on children's unintentional injuries(OR = 0.435,95%CI: 0.272 ~ 0.695), and having high scores on CRS riding mode cognition(OR = 0.476, 95%CI: 0.368 ~ 0.616), CRS type cognition(OR = 0.519, 95%CI: 0.392 ~ 0.689), CRS use motivation(OR = 0.392, 95%CI: 0.295 ~ 0.520) and installation skills(OR = 0.559, 95%CI:0.411 ~ 0.761) were the main factors promoting the usage of CRS. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that the use of CRS can be increased by improving parents' knowledge, motivation and behavior skills and hence related educational programs is necessary for increasing CRS use in China.

Weizhi Xun and Changwang Wu contributed equally to this work In October 2020, bayberry (Myrica rubra (Lour.) S. et Zucc.) leaves that beginning to wither were collected in Wencheng County (N27°50', E120°03'). In the county, 4,120 ha of bayberry were planted, of which 58% were affected by the disease, and the severity of leaf disease per plant was 5 to25%. Bayberry leaves leaves were intensely green at first, then gradually turned yellow and brown,and completely withered. The leaves did not fall off at the beginning of the symptoms, but did fall after 1 to 2 months. To identify the pathogen, 50 diseased leaves with typical symptoms were collected from 10 diseased trees. Leaves with necrotic-tissue were firstly washed with sterilized water, and then tissue at the disease-/ healthy-tissuejunction removed with sterile surgical scissors. The tissues were soaked in 75% ethanol for 30 s, followed by 5% sodium hypochlorite solution for 3 to 4 min, rinsed with sterilized water 4 times, and placed on sterilized filter paper. The tissue was placed on PDA medium and cultured in an incubator at 25℃ (Nouri et al. 2019). After the colonies grew around the tissue, mycelia with the same morphology was selected and placed on fresh PDA. A pure culture of the pathogen was obtained after repeating the last process several times. The isolatedcolonies were white, with a round edge and a light-yellow back. Conidia were straight or slightly curved, with 3 to 4 septations. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regin translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1-α), and beta-tubulin gene (ß-TUB)(Chaiwan et al. 2020; Li et al. 2021; Chen et al. 2020; Chen et al. 2018) of the two strains were amplified and sequenced, and the sequences were uploaded to Gen bank (GenBank accession number.ACCC 35162: ITS OP891011, TEF1-α OP903533, ß-TUB OP903531; ACCC 35163: ITS OP891012, ß-TUB OP903534, TEF1-α OP903532). BLAST alignment indicated that the ITS sequence of strain ACCC 35162 had 100% identity with NR_147549.1, the TEF sequence had 100% identity with MT552449.1, and the TUB sequence had 99.87% identity with KX895323.1; the ITS sequence of strain ACCC 35163 had 100% identity with NR_147549.1, the TEF sequence had 100% identity with MT552449.1, and the TUB sequence had 99.86% identity with KX895323.1. A Phylogenetic tree using maximum likelihood/rapid bootstrapping run on XSEDE based on the above three sequences inferred that the two strains were identical to P. kenyana (Miller et al. 2010). The strain was preserved in the Agricultural Culture Collection of China (Preservation numbers: ACCC 35162, ACCC 35163). Following Koch's rule, six healthy plants leaves were inoculated with conidial suspensions (106 conidia mL-1) and mycelial plugs (5 mm),and then placed in an artificial climate chamber (25℃, 90% humidity, 16-h light), sterile PDA and sterile water were used as blank controls. The same treatment was applied to fresh bayberry leaves under laboratory conditions, and brown spots were observed after three days. There were no symptoms in the control group. The experimental symptoms were similar to those in the field. Using the previous method, the same fungus was reisolated from the diseased leaves and again identified as P. kenyana. As far as we know, this is the first report causing disease on P. kenyana infecting bayberry in China, this disease seriously affected the yield and quality of bayberry and caused economic losses to farmers.

Photodynamic therapy is known for its non-invasiveness to significantly reduce undesired side effects on patients. However, the infiltration and invasiveness of tumor growth are still beyond the specificity of traditional light-controlled photodynamic therapy (PDT), which lacks cellular-level accuracy to tumor cells, possibly leading to "off-target" damage to healthy tissues such as the skin or immune cells infiltrated. Here, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were co-encapsulated with manganese dioxide (MnO2) by amphiphilic polymers poly(styrene-co-methyl acrylate) (PSMA) and further coated with photosensitizer (riboflavin)-loaded mesoporous silica (C@S/V). The C@S/V nanoprobes exhibited shielded upconversion luminescence in normal conditions (pH 7.4, no hydroperoxide (H2O2)) under 980-nm irradiation and thus minimal reactive oxygen production from riboflavin. However, the excess H2O2 (1 mM) and acidic environment (pH 5.5) could decompose the MnO2 within the C@S/V, resulting in remarkable enhancement of upconversion luminescence and a favorable hypoxia-relieving condition for PDT, providing a spatiotemporal signal for therapy initiation. The C@S/V nanoprobes were applied to the co-culture of normal cells (HEK293) and pancreatic cancer cells (Panc02) and performed a selective killing on Panc02 under the 980-nm irradiation. By using the "double-safety" strategy, a responsive C@S/V nanoprobe was designed by the selective activation of acidic and H2O2-rich conditions and 980-nm irradiation for spatiotemporally selective photodynamic therapy with cellular-level accuracy.

Biomembranes in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) play indispensable roles in various bioactivities, and therefore, visualizing the phase separation in ER membranes is crucial for the studies on the fundamental biology of the ER. However, near-infrared (NIR) ratiometric imaging of the phase behaviors of the ER in living cells with different statuses and in diverse tissues has not been investigated. Herein, we developed a polarity-responsive NIR fluorescent probe (DCA) for the visualization of the phase behavior in ER membranes. The probe displayed a large Stokes shift and was highly sensitive to polarity. By direct and native fluorescence imaging at room temperature, the ERo and ERd biomembranes in the ER could be clearly distinguished by dual NIR emission colors. Oxidative damage by H2O2 and homocystein (Hcy)-induced ER stress can efficiently induce the formation of large-scale ERo domains in ER membranes. Moreover, we have also revealed that different tissues exhibited diverse phase behaviors in the ER membranes. The ER membranes in cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues showed no evident phase separation, while large-scale ERo domains existed in the ER of liver tissues and formed at the ER membranes adjacent to lipid droplets (LDs) in white adipose tissues. We expect that the probe could serve as a powerful molecular tool to promote fundamental research studies on ER membranes and relative biomedical areas.

OBJECTIVE: The BRAF V600E and TERT promoter mutations are well known to be associated with poor clinical outcomes of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Radioactive iodide (RAI)-refractory can be evaluated in advance of treatment, for which predictive biomarkers may be helpful. The present study is to analyze the correlation of both mutations with the curative effect of radioiodine therapy. METHODS: A total of 126 patients who underwent RAI therapy from October 2016 to August 2019 were recruited. Treatment and follow-up were defined according to criteria used in the 2015 ATA guidelines. The RAI response of patients was assessed as excellent response (ER) and RAI-refractory at the end of follow-up. RESULTS: When dividing the 126 patients into 4 groups, the no mutation, only BRAF V600E mutation, only TERT promoter mutation, and coexistence of two mutation groups were found in 15.8%, 68.3%, 2.4%, and 13.5% patients. RAI-refractory was found in 52.9% (9/17) patients with the coexisting BRAF and TERT mutations. In logistic regression analysis, M1, BRAF, and TERT mutation were confirmed to be independent factors predicting the RAI-refractory. Moreover, 35.3%, 41.2%, and 23.5% of patients in the BRAF and TERT mutation group were assessed as ER, SIR, and BIR respectively. Kaplan-Meier analyses revealed that the genetic duet of BRAF V600E and TERT promoter mutations was associated with a lower ER reached time. CONCLUSIONS: We found that BRAF V600E and TERT promoter mutation is significantly correlated with the poor curative effect of RAI therapy in PTC. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate whether urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and urinary iodine to creatinine ratio (UICR) measurements can act as markers for the curative effect of radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. METHODS: A total of 337 patients who underwent RAI therapy between May 2018 and March 2020 were recruited. According to the levels of UIC or UICR, patients were divided into 6 groups: group A, UIC levels of <100 µg/L; group B, UIC levels ranging from 100 to 200 µg/L; group C, UIC levels of ≥200 µg/L; group D, UICR levels of <100 µg/g; group E, UICR levels ranging from 100 to 200 µg/g; and group F, UICR levels of ≥200 µg/g. Treatment and follow-up were defined according to the criteria used in the 2015 ATA guidelines. RESULTS: When dividing the 337 patients into 3 groups according to UIC levels, 50.7%, 22.6%, and 26.7% of patients were in the A, B, and C groups, respectively. Based on the UICR levels, 58.1%, 29.4%, and 12.5% of patients were in the D, E, and F groups, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between UIC and UICR levels and iodine-131 uptake rates (P < .001). The excellent response rate was not significantly different between the UIC groups (P = .997) and the UICR groups (P = .634). In logistic regression analysis, UIC and UICR levels were not confirmed to be independent factors predicting the excellent response status, but an age of ≥55 years (OR = 0.373; P = .007) and Tg levels of ≥10 ng/mL (OR = 18.972; P = .001) were confirmed to be independent factors predicting the excellent response status at the end of follow-up. CONCLUSION: The UIC or UICR levels before RAI therapy did not compromise the therapeutic response to iodine-131.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is one of the common symptoms in childhood. The prevalence of FC is about 0.5% to 32% and still on the rise according to global statistics. The aim of this study is to explore the associations between family-related factors (e.g., parental conflict, parenting style, and parent-child relationship) and functional constipation of preschool children based on family system theory. METHODS: The study is a case-control survey of preschoolers in China. In total, 108 preschoolers with functional constipation diagnosed with pediatric Rome IV criteria and 324 healthy examination preschoolers without functional constipation were enrolled in the study. Parents completed the following 5 instruments: General information questionnaire, the Parental Conflict Scale, the Parenting Style Questionnaire, the Child-parent Relationship Scale and the Children's Emotional Adjustment Scale-Preschool Version. RESULTS: Nine categories of factors which significantly predicted functional constipation in preschoolers were retained in the final logistic regression model: Second child in birth order (OR = 0.456; 95% CI, 0.229 to 0.910), children picky eating (OR = 2.936; 95% CI, 1.133 to 7.611), bad bowel habits (OR = 2.896; 95% CI, 1.391 to 6.028), parental history of constipation (OR = 3.259; 95% CI, 1.600 to 6.639), parents blaming the child for having a bad bowel movement (OR = 3.788; 95% CI, 1.391 to 10.318), more than 3 h of fathers-child interaction time per day (OR = 0.137; 95% CI, 0.024 to 0.778), parental conflict (OR = 1.981; 95% CI, 0.950 to 3.831), doting or authoritarian parenting style (OR = 1.644; 95% CI, 1.067 to 2.534, OR = 2.481; 95% CI, 1.362 to 4.519), and anxiety control or temper control in children (OR = 0.492; 95% CI, 0.303 to 0.799, OR = 0.189; 95% CI, 0.103 to 0.348). CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the significant associations between family-related factors and functional constipation in preschool children, which provide implications for healthcare professionals to address functional constipation in early childhood using a preventive lens.

Probiotic fermented milk is more and more popular due to their positive health associated properties. However, fermentation temperature and other process conditions may affect the growth and metabolism of probiotic strains, thereby affecting quality of the final products. In this study, the growth behaviors and metabolomic profiles of yogurts induced by Lactobacillus casei Zhang at fermentation termination (FT) and d 10 of storage (S10d) under different fermentation temperatures at 37°C (low) and 42°C (high) were analyzed and compared using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS)- and gas chromatography-MS-based metabolomics approaches. At 37°C, the growth of L. casei Zhang at FT and S10d was significantly increased, and the potential relationship between riboflavin, starch, and sucrose metabolism and growth of L. casei Zhang may be mutually promoting. Fermentation temperature (37°C and 42°C) affected volatile and nonvolatile metabolomic profiles and pathways. The levels of acetaldehyde, 2,3-butanedione, acetoin, butyric acid, decanoic acid, hexanoic acid, and octanoic acid were significantly higher at 37°C than at 42°C at FT and S10d. This indicates that the low temperature (37°C) most likely contributes more to the formation of important flavor compounds during the fermentation process and production of short-chain fatty acids during storage.

The segmentation of the lesion region in gastroscopic images is highly important for the detection and treatment of early gastric cancer. This paper proposes a novel approach for gastric lesion segmentation by using generative adversarial training. First, a segmentation network is designed to generate accurate segmentation masks for gastric lesions. The proposed segmentation network adds residual blocks to the encoding and decoding path of U-Net. The cascaded dilated convolution is also added at the bottleneck of U-Net. The residual connection promotes information propagation, while dilated convolution integrates multi-scale context information. Meanwhile, a discriminator is used to distinguish the generated and real segmentation masks. The proposed discriminator is a Markov discriminator (Patch-GAN), which discriminates each [Formula: see text] matrix in the image. In the process of network training, the adversary training mechanism is used to iteratively optimize the generator and the discriminator until they converge at the same time. The experimental results show that the dice, accuracy, and recall are 86.6%, 91.9%, and 87.3%, respectively. These metrics are significantly better than the existing models, which proves the effectiveness of this method and can meet the needs of clinical diagnosis and treatment.

This article is the 14th in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein we report 98 taxa distributed in two phyla, seven classes, 26 orders and 50 families which are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were collected from Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, French Guiana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Laos, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 59 new taxa, 39 new hosts and new geographical distributions with one new combination. In this list, erroneous taxa and synonyms are marked and corrected accordingly.

BACKGROUND: Cotton is an important cash crop. The fiber length has always been a hot spot, but multi-factor control of fiber quality makes it complex to understand its genetic basis. Previous reports suggested that OsGASR9 promotes germination, width, and thickness by GAs in rice, while the overexpression of AtGASA10 leads to reduced silique length, which is likely to reduce cell wall expansion. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the function of GhGASA10 in cotton fibers development. RESULTS: To explore the molecular mechanisms underlying fiber elongation regulation concerning GhGASA10-1, we revealed an evolutionary basis, gene structure, and expression. Our results emphasized the conservative nature of GASA family with its origin in lower fern plants S. moellendorffii. GhGASA10-1 was localized in the cell membrane, which may synthesize and transport secreted proteins to the cell wall. Besides, GhGASA10-1 promoted seedling germination and root extension in transgenic Arabidopsis, indicating that GhGASA10-1 promotes cell elongation. Interestingly, GhGASA10-1 was upregulated by IAA at fiber elongation stages. CONCLUSION: We propose that GhGASA10-1 may promote fiber elongation by regulating the synthesis of cellulose induced by IAA, to lay the foundation for future research on the regulation networks of GASA10-1 in cotton fiber development.
