RESUMO

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) has gained tremendous interest in the sector of power transformation and retention, because of its distinctive stacked composition, adjustable electronic structure, metal-free feature, superior thermodynamic durability, and simple availability. Furthermore, the restricted illumination and extensive recombination of photoexcitation electrons have inhibited the photocatalytic performance of pure g-C3 N4 . The dimensions of g-C3 N4 may impact the field of electronics confinement; as a consequence, g-C3 N4 with varying dimensions shows unique features, making it appropriate for a number of fascinating uses. Even if there are several evaluations emphasizing on the fabrication methods and deployments of g-C3 N4 , there is certainly an insufficiency of a full overview, that exhaustively depicts the synthesis and composition of diverse aspects of g-C3 N4 . Consequently, from the standpoint of numerical simulations and experimentation, several legitimate methodologies were employed to deliberately develop the photocatalyst and improve the optimal result, including elements loading, defects designing, morphological adjustment, and semiconductors interfacing. Herein, this evaluation initially discusses different dimensions, the physicochemical features, modifications and interfaces design development of g-C3 N4 . Emphasis is given to the practical design and development of g-C3 N4 for the various power transformation and inventory applications, such as photocatalytic H2 evolution, photoreduction of CO2 source, electrocatalytic H2 evolution, O2 evolution, O2 reduction, alkali-metal battery cells, lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and metal-air batteries. Ultimately, the current challenges and potential of g-C3 N4 for fuel transformation and retention activities are explored.

RESUMO

Recently, the growing demand for a renewable and sustainable fuel alternative is contingent on fuel cell technologies. Even though it is regarded as an environmentally sustainable method of generating fuel for immediate concerns, it must be enhanced to make it extraordinarily affordable, and environmentally sustainable. Hydrogen (H2 ) synthesis by electrochemical water splitting (ECWS) is considered one of the foremost potential prospective methods for renewable energy output and H2 society implementation. Existing massive H2 output is mostly reliant on the steaming reformation of carbon fuels that yield CO2 together with H2 and is a finite resource. ECWS is a viable, efficient, and contamination-free method for H2 evolution. Consequently, developing reliable and cost-effective technology for ECWS was a top priority for scientists around the globe. Utilizing renewable technologies to decrease total fuel utilization is crucial for H2 evolution. Capturing and transforming the fuel from the ambient through various renewable solutions for water splitting (WS) could effectively reduce the need for additional electricity. ECWS is among the foremost potential prospective methods for renewable energy output and the achievement of a H2 -based economy. For the overall water splitting (OWS), several transition-metal-based polyfunctional metal catalysts for both cathode and anode have been synthesized. Furthermore, the essential to the widespread adoption of such technology is the development of reduced-price, super functional electrocatalysts to substitute those, depending on metals. Many metal-premised electrocatalysts for both the anode and cathode have been designed for the WS process. The attributes of H2 and oxygen (O2 ) dynamics interactions on the electrodes of water electrolysis cells and the fundamental techniques for evaluating the achievement of electrocatalysts are outlined in this paper. Special emphasis is paid to their fabrication, electrocatalytic performance, durability, and measures for enhancing their efficiency. In addition, prospective ideas on metal-based WS electrocatalysts based on existing problems are presented. It is anticipated that this review will offer a straight direction toward the engineering and construction of novel polyfunctional electrocatalysts encompassing superior efficiency in a suitable WS technique.

RESUMO

The increasing demand for searching highly efficient and robust technologies in the context of sustainable energy production totally rely onto the cost-effective energy efficient production technologies. Solar power technology in this regard will perceived to be extensively employed in a variety of ways in the future ahead, in terms of the combustion of petroleum-based pollutants, CO2 reduction, heterogeneous photocatalysis, as well as the formation of unlimited and sustainable hydrogen gas production. Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is regarded as potentially sustainable solution in this context. g-C3 N4 is classified as non-metallic semiconductor to overcome this energy demand and enviromental challenges, because of its superior electronic configuration, which has a median band energy of around 2.7 eV, strong photocatalytic stability, and higher light performance. The photocatalytic performance of g-C3 N4 is perceived to be inadequate, owing to its small surface area along with high rate of charge recombination. However, various synthetic strategies were applied in order to incorporate g-C3 N4 with different guest materials to increase photocatalytic performance. After these fabrication approaches, the photocatalytic activity was enhanced owing to generation of photoinduced electrons and holes, by improving light absorption ability, and boosting surface area, which provides more space for photocatalytic reaction. In this review, various metals, non-metals, metals oxide, sulfides, and ferrites have been integrated with g-C3 N4 to form mono, bimetallic, heterojunction, Z-scheme, and S-scheme-based materials for boosting performance. Also, different varieties of g-C3 N4 were utilized for different aspects of photocatalytic application i. e., water reduction, water oxidation, CO2 reduction, and photodegradation of dye pollutants, etc. As a consequence, we have assembled a summary of the latest g-C3 N4 based materials, their uses in solar energy adaption, and proper management of the environment. This research will further well explain the detail of the mechanism of all these photocatalytic processes for the next steps, as well as the age number of new insights in order to overcome the current challenges.

RESUMO

Objective: Adults with asthma have a higher prevalence of substance use. However, knowledge is scarce regarding the associations between adults with asthma and tobacco use, substance use, and substance misuse. This study aimed to use national samples of United States adults to assess the comprehensive use and misuse of substances in adults with asthma.Method: This cross-sectional study comprised data drawn from the 2015 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Weighted logistic regressions were used to measure the associations of asthma status (lifetime and current) with last month's tobacco use; substance use (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants); and substance misuse (pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, sedatives). All regression models were controlled for sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, last-month serious psychological distress, and co-substance use and misuse. Results: Adults with lifetime asthma (Nweighted = 115,600,887) were less likely to use cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, inhalants, and polyuse of any substance. In contrast, adults with current asthma (Nweighted = 765,096,31) were more likely to use pipe tobacco, cocaine, non-prescribed tranquilizers, and less likely to use polytobacco products. Adults with lifetime asthma were associated with fewer last-month tobacco and inhalant use than those without lifetime asthma. However, adults with current asthma were associated with greater last month's pipe tobacco, cocaine, and non-prescribed tranquilizers. Conclusion: Thus, further longitudinal studies are recommended among adults with asthma to effectively design tailored treatment and prevention interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the advances in neonatal intensive care, the survival rate of extremely preterm infants is increasing. However, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains a major cause of morbidity among infants in this group. This study examined the changes in respiratory support modalities, specifically heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), and their association with BPD incidence among preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation. METHOD: This population-based retrospective cohort study included infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation between 2016 and 2020. Data regarding the use and duration of respiratory support modalities were obtained, including mechanical ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure, HHHFNC, and low-flow oxygen therapy. Additionally, the incidence of BPD was determined in the included infants. Trend analysis for each respiratory support modality and BPD incidence rate was performed to define the temporal changes associated with changes in BPD rates. In addition, a logistic regression model was developed to identify the association between BPD and severity grade using HHHFNC. RESULTS: Three Hundred and sixteen infants were included in this study. The use and duration of HHHFNC therapy increased during the study period. Throughout the study period, the overall incidence of BPD was 49%, with no significant trends. The BPD rate was significantly higher in the infants who received HHHFNC than in those who did not (52% vs. 39%, P = 0.03). Analysis of BPD severity grades showed that both grade 1 BPD (34% vs. 21%, P = 0.03) and grade 2 BPD (12% vs. 1%, P < 0.01) were significantly more common among infants who received HHHFNC than among those who did not. In contrast, the incidence of grade 3 BPD was lower in infants who received HHFNC (6% vs. 17%, P < 0.01). The duration in days of HHHFNC was found to significantly predict BPD incidence (OR 1.04 [95%CI: 1.01-1.06], P < 0.01) after adjusting for confounding variables. CONCLUSION: The use of HHHFNC in extremely preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation is increasing. There was a significant association between the duration of HHHFNC therapy and the development of BPD in extremely preterm infants born at < 29 weeks of gestation.

RESUMO

As the availability of tobacco forms has evolved, emerging products known as heated tobacco products (HTPs) are increasingly being consumed worldwide and are claimed to be less harmful than tobacco cigarette smoking. To date, it is unknown whether Arab cigarette smokers are using or susceptible to HTPs. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between cigarette smoking behavior and the use of and susceptibility to HTPs in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Arab cigarette smokers (n = 628) from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, and Yemen were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. A cross-sectional survey comprised questions related to sociodemographic characteristics, cigarette smoking behavior characteristics (quitting attempts and desire to quit cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence, and consideration of switching to nicotine products with reduced health risks), and awareness of, use of, and susceptibility to use of HTPs. Descriptive and logistic regression models were used for analysis. The participants indicated a high frequency of past quitting attempts and a desire to quit smoking cigarettes. They were also considering switching to a nicotine product with reduced health risks. However, their awareness of HTPs was relatively low (24.2%), and the proportion of participants who had ever used HTPs or were currently using them was quite low as well (10.7% and 5.0%, respectively). A history of quit attempts was associated with more likely lifetime use of HTPs (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.21-5.71]). Nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers were more likely to be susceptible to HTP use (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI [1.01-1.24]). Moreover, those who would consider switching to a product that provided nicotine and could reduce health risks by 99% were more likely to be susceptible to using HTPs (AOR = 2.17, 95% CI [1.05-4.51]). Awareness of HTPs is relatively low among Arab cigarette smokers. Attempts to quit cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence, and the consideration of switching to a product that delivers nicotine with reduced health risks were significantly associated with using HTPs. The findings of this study provide potential for evidence-based treatment for smokers and will help prevent the use of tobacco industry tactics in marketing HTPs.

RESUMO

Use of MXenes (Ti3 C2 Tx ), which belongs to the family of two-dimensional transition metal nitrides and carbides by encompassing unique combination of metallic conductivity and hydrophilicity, is receiving tremendous attention, since its discovery as energy material in 2011. Owing to its precursor selective chemical etching, and unique intrinsic characteristics, the MXene surface properties are further classified into highly chemically active compound, which further produced different surface functional groups i. e., oxygen, fluorine or hydroxyl groups. However, the role of surface functional groups doesn't not only have a significant impact onto its electrochemical and hydrophilic characteristics (i. e., ion adsorption/diffusion), but also imparting a noteworthy effect onto its conductivity, work function, electronic structure and properties. Henceforth, such kind of inherent chemical nature, robust electrochemistry and high hydrophilicity ultimately increasing the MXene application as a most propitious material for overall environment-remediation, electrocatalytic sensors, energy conversion and storage application. Moreover, it is well documented that the role of MXenes in all kinds of research fields is still on a progress stage for their further improvement, which is not sufficiently summarized in literature till now. The present review article is intended to critically discuss the different chemical aptitudes and the diversity of MXenes and its derivates (i. e., hybrid composites) in all aforesaid application with special emphasis onto the improvement of its surface characteristics for the multidimensional application. However, this review article is anticipated to endorse MXenes and its derivates hybrid configuration, which is discussed in detail for emerging environmental decontamination, electrochemical use, and pollutant detection via electrocatalytic sensors, photocatalysis, along with membrane distillation and the adsorption application. Finally, it is expected, that this review article will open up new window for the effective use of MXene in a broad range of environmental remediation, energy conversion and storage application as a novel, robust, multidimensional and more proficient materials.

RESUMO

Being one of the foremost enticing and intriguing innovations, heterogeneous photocatalysis has also been used to effectively gather, transform, and conserve sustainable sun's radiation for the production of efficient and clean fossil energy as well as a wide range of ecological implications. The generation of solar fuel-based water splitting and CO2 photoreduction is excellent for generating alternative resources and reducing global warming. Developing an inexpensive photocatalyst can effectively split water into hydrogen (H2 ), oxygen (O2 ) sources, and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into fuel sources, which is a crucial problem in photocatalysis. The metal-free g-C3 N4 photocatalyst has a high solar fuel generation potential. This review covers the most recent advancements in g-C3 N4 preparation, including innovative design concepts and new synthesis methods, and novel ideas for expanding the light absorption of pure g-C3 N4 for photocatalytic application. Similarly, the main issue concerning research and prospects in photocatalysts based g-C3 N4 was also discussed. The current dissertation provides an overview of comprehensive understanding of the exploitation of the extraordinary systemic and characteristics, as well as the fabrication processes and uses of g-C3 N4 .

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of hormonal treatments on ovarian activity and reproductive performance in Barki and Rahmani ewes during non-breeding season. Forty-eight multiparous ewes, 24 Barki and 24 Rahmani ewes were divided into two groups, 12 lactating and 12 dry ewes for each breed. Controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device was inserted in all ewes for 14 days in conjunction with intramuscular 500 IU equine chronic gonadotrophin (eCG) at day of CIDR removal. Data were analysed using PROC MIXED of SAS for repeated measures. Breed, physiological status and days were used as fixed effects and individual ewes as random effects. Barki ewes recorded higher (p < .05) total number of follicles, number of large follicles, serum estradiol concentration and estradiol: progesterone (E2 :P4 ) ratio compared to Rahmani ewes. Lactating ewes recorded higher (p < .05) number of small follicles and lower concentration of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) compared to dry ewes. Number and diameter of large follicles recorded the highest (p < .05) values accompanied with disappearance of corpora lutea at day of mating. Serum progesterone concentration recorded lower (p < .05) value at day of mating and the highest (p < .05) value at day 35 after mating. CIDR-eCG protocol induced 100% oestrous behaviour in both breeds, but Rahmani ewes recorded longer (p < .05) oestrous duration compared to Barki. Conception failure was higher (p < .05) in Barki compared to Rahmani ewes. In conclusion, CIDR-eCG protocol was more potent in improving ovarian activity in Barki compared to Rahmani ewes, but this protocol seems to induce hormonal imbalance in Barki ewes that resulted in increasing conception failure compared to Rahmani ewes.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of hormonal treatments on ovarian activity and reproductive performance in anestrous Anglo-Nubian does during the nonbreeding season (February to May). A total of 48 multiparous does were divided into 2 groups (24 lactating does and 24 dry does). In each group, animals were allocated randomly into 2 equal subgroups (12 does each). In the first subgroup, does received a single 18-mg melatonin implant for 42 d followed by a controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device for 19 d in conjunction with 500 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) i.m. on the day of CIDR device removal. The second subgroup received CIDR combined with eCG in parallel with the first subgroup. Melatonin implantation induced a luteotrophic effect, expressed as an increasing number of corpora lutea, increased serum progesterone concentration, and reduced estradiol concentration. Regardless of treatment, dry does showed greater value of progesterone concentration. With the advancement of day of treatment, number of total follicles, small follicles, and medium follicles tended to increase to the greatest values at the day of CIDR device insertion. Furthermore, at day of mating, the numbers of large follicles reached the greatest value, which was associated with the lowest value of the number of corpora lutea. At day of mating, serum progesterone concentration achieved the lowest value, which increased until d 56 of pregnancy. The estradiol:progesterone ratio showed the opposite trend. The detrimental effect of reproductive seasonality, expressed as cessation of estrus behavior and fertile mating during the nonbreeding season, was successfully alleviated by the CIDR-eCG protocol. Furthermore, melatonin implantation in conjunction with the CIDR-eCG protocol enhanced conception rate and fecundity at d 28 of pregnancy and prolificacy at d 56 of pregnancy compared with does that were not implanted. Interestingly, does that failed to conceive did not come to heat again. In conclusion, the beneficial effect of melatonin implantation in conjunction with the CIDR-eCG protocol on the luteotrophic effect was reflected in the increasing number of corpora lutea, increasing progesterone concentration, and decreasing estradiol concentration. Furthermore, conception rate, prolificacy, and fecundity were improved compared with does that were not implanted during the nonbreeding season.

RESUMO

Characterization of fecundity genes offers the opportunity to improve production efficiency, and the consequent increase in litter size in livestock industry, through utilizing them in breeding programs. The main objective of this study was to detect the BMPR-IB, BMP15 and GDF9 gene mutations and to investigate whether these mutations are associated with litter size in Egyptian sheep breeds. To achieve this goal, 73 adult ewes representing Barki (n = 33) and Rahmani (n = 40) breeds were used. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) screening approach was used to detect the presence of FecB, FecXG and FecXI mutations in the two selected breeds. Results of this study showed that the three different candidate gene mutations, namely FecB, FecXG and FecXI are not present among these selected populations of the Egyptian breeds. Further studies regarding other mutations and/or other genes, which may influence ovulation rate, should be carried out to determine the type and mode of inheritance of such genes in Egyptian sheep breeds.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to describe the effect of concussion on upper and lower body strength in children and youth athletes. The participant group was made up of 178 unique male and female ice hockey players (ages 8-14 years). Using a 3-year prospective longitudinal research design, baseline and post-concussion data on hand grip strength, jump tests, and leg maximal voluntary contraction were collected. Using a linear mixed-effects model, no significant differences were found when comparing the baseline strength performance of individuals who went on to experience a concussion and those who did not. When accounting for sex, multiple concussions, and ongoing changes in strength associated with age, weaker hand grip scores were found following concussion while participants were still symptomatic. Lower squat jump heights were achieved while participants were symptomatic as well as when they were no longer self-reporting symptoms associated with concussion. This study represents an initial step towards better understanding strength performance following concussion that may limit the on and off ice performance of youth ice hockey players, as well as predispose youth to subsequent injuries.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the peripapillary choroidal thickness of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) via enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 patients with COPD (80 eyes) and 50 control subjects (50 eyes) were enrolled. Choroidal scans and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were obtained for all eyes using OCT. RESULTS: The average peripapillary choroidal thickness measurements of the COPD group (147.58 ± 53.53 µm) were lower than the control group (160.84 ± 44.73 µm) (p = 0.068). Inferior segment thicknesses were significantly thinner than the other segments (p < 0.05). Subfoveal choroidal thickness and RNFL thickness measurements of the COPD group were also lower than those of the control group (p = 0.111). CONCLUSION: Hypoxia in COPD seems to affect the choroidal thickness. Thinning of the choroid may be attributed to increased vascular resistance and reduced blood flow in patients with COPD. The possible effects of the disease to the eye may be clarified through the role of the choroidal vasculature in the blood supply of the anterior optic nerve head.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Sustained optimal use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has been shown to decrease morbidity, mortality and HIV transmission. However, incomplete adherence and treatment interruption (TI) remain challenges to the full realization of the promise of cART. We estimated trends and predictors of treatment interruption and resumption among individuals in the Canadian Observational Cohort (CANOC) collaboration. METHODS: cART-naïve individuals ≥ 18 years of age who initiated cART between 2000 and 2011 were included in the study. We defined TIs as ≥ 90 consecutive days off cART. We used descriptive analyses to study TI trends over time and Cox regression to identify factors predicting time to first TI and time to treatment resumption after a first TI. RESULTS: A total of 7633 participants were eligible for inclusion in the study, of whom 1860 (24.5%) experienced a TI. The prevalence of TI in the first calendar year of cART decreased by half over the study period. Our analyses highlighted a higher risk of TI among women [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.59; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.33-1.92], younger individuals (aHR 1.27; 95% CI 1.15-1.37 per decade increase), earlier treatment initiators (CD4 count ≥ 350 vs. <200 cells/µL: aHR 1.46; 95% CI 1.17-1.81), Aboriginal participants (aHR 1.67; 95% CI 1.27-2.20), injecting drug users (aHR 1.43; 95% CI 1.09-1.89) and users of zidovudine vs. tenofovir in the initial cART regimen (aHR 2.47; 95% CI 1.92-3.20). Conversely, factors predicting treatment resumption were male sex, older age, and a CD4 cell count <200 cells/µL at cART initiation. CONCLUSIONS: Despite significant improvements in cART since its advent, our results demonstrate that TIs remain relatively prevalent. Strategies to support continuous HIV treatment are needed to maximize the benefits of cART.

RESUMO

A protein, designated as Sgl, showing a muramidase lytic activity to the cell wall of the Gram-positive bacterium Micrococcus lysodeikticus was isolated for the first time from plasma of Escherichia coli-immunized fifth instar Schistocerca gregaria. The isolated Sgl was detected as a single protein band, on both native- and SDS-PAGE, has a molecular weight of ∼15.7 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of ca 9.3 and its antiserum has specifically recognized its isolated form. Fifty-nine percentage of Sgl lytic activity was recovered in the isolated fractions and yielded ca 126-fold increase in specific activity than that of the crude. The partial N-terminal amino acid sequence of the Sgl has 55 and 40% maximum identity with Bombyx mori and Gallus gallus c-type lysozymes, respectively. The antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive and the Gram-negative bacteria were comparatively stronger than that of the hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL). The detected Sgl poration to the inner membrane that reach a maximum ability after 3 h was suggested to operate as a nonenzymatic mechanism for Gram-negative bacterial cell lysis, as tested in a permease-deficient E. coli, ML-35 strain. Sgl showed a maximal muramidase activity at pH 6.2, 30-50°C, and 0.05 M Ca(2+) or Mg(2+); and has a Km of 0.5 µg/ml and a Vmax of 0.518 with M. lysodeikticus as a substrate. The Sgl displayed a chitinase activity against chitin with a Km of 0.93 mg/ml and a Vmax of 1.63.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Aspirin and clopidogrel have been found helpful in improving clinical outcomes among patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). However, the evidence on the efficacy of aspirin and/or clopidogrel on clinical outcomes has not been synthesized and summarized in the prior reviews. Hence, we undertook a meta-analysis of the research studies examining the effect of aspirin and/or clopidogrel on varying clinical outcomes among COPD patients; (2) Methods: Using key search terms, we searched databases, including MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and EMBASE to find observational studies and RCTs. Our search was limited to research written in English. We used a random effect model to calculate the 95% confidence intervals and pooled hazard ratio; (3) Results: We included 12 eligible research studies (33,8008 patients) in the current meta-analysis. Among COPD patients, the hazard of all-cause mortality among users of aspirin or clopidogrel was 17% lower (HR: 0.83; 95% CIs (0.70, 0.97; I2 = 73%, X2: 33.34) compared to non-users of anticoagulants (aspirin or clopidogrel). The hazard of dyspnea among users of aspirin or clopidogrel was 3% lower (HR: 0.97; 95% CIs (0.27, 3.49; I2 = 93%, X2: 42.15) compared to non-users of anticoagulants (aspirin or clopidogrel). There was no statistically significant effect of aspirin on other clinical outcomes such as myocardial infarction (HR: 2.04; 95% CIs (0.02, 257.33) and major bleeding (HR: 1.93; 95% CIs (0.07, 1002.33). The funnel plot and Egger's regression test did not show any evidence of publication bias; (4) Conclusions: Overall, we found a positive and beneficial effect of aspirin and/or clopidogrel in reducing all-cause mortality among COPD patients. However, there is uncertainty of evidence for other clinical outcomes such as exacerbation of dyspnea, myocardial infarction, and major bleeding. A limited number of studies examining other clinical outcomes warrant conducting more robust epidemiological studies to assess the efficacy and safety of aspirin and clopidogrel on other clinical outcomes among COPD patients.

RESUMO

Objective. To describe heated humidified high-flow nasal cannulas (HHHFNC) utilization in level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Saudi Arabia. Methods. A prospective cross-sectional study using an electronic web-based questionnaire. The survey targeted level III NICUs hospitals using HHHFNCs, covering HHHFNC availability, protocols, patient characteristics, and indications. It also collected opinions on the benefits of HHHFNCs compared to nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). Results. Out of 47 government-level III neonatal intensive care units, 35 (74%) responded to the survey. Among the included units, 46% had guidelines for HHHFNC use. Additionally, 51% reported using HHHFNC in infants of all gestational ages. The primary indication for HHHFNC use was weaning off nCPAP (34%), with 60% of the respondents noting its advantages for kangaroo care and breastfeeding. Conclusion. HHHFNC are increasingly prevalent in NICUs in Saudi Arabia. However, there remain no clear policies or guidelines regarding their use in preterm infants.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to describe the number, types and locations of known injuries occurring across different age categories and levels of competition in female ice hockey within the Ontario Women's Hockey Association from 2004/05 to 2007/08. We further examined under which aforementioned factors and combination of factors an unusually high or low number of injuries was recorded. Secondary analysis of anonymized injury data was conducted. The most common known injury type was strain/sprain, followed by concussion while the most frequent injury location was head/face/mouth. Analysis of deviance indicated that a significantly higher than expected number of sprain/strain, concussion and laceration injuries were recorded compared to all other injury types. In addition, there were a higher number of injuries recorded at the AA level compared to all other levels of competition. Finally, the age categories of Peewee, Midget and Intermediate within the AA level of competition, as well as Senior/Adult within the Houseleague level of competition also recorded a significantly higher number of injuries compared to other combinations of descriptive factors. Further research with female youth is needed to better understand the high number of injuries, including concussions, reported overall.

RESUMO

In recent years, the detection of water pollution with low levels of heavy metals has attracted the great attention of many researchers as a result of the imminent danger of this type of pollution to all mankind. Meanwhile, we introduce a theoretical approach based on the one-dimensional phononic crystals (1D-PnCs) with a central defect layer as a novel platform for the highly sensitive detection of heavy metal pollution in freshwater. Therefore, the creation of a resonant peak in the transmittance spectrum related to this defect layer is highly conceivable. In this regard, the detection of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) as a dangerous, toxic, and extremely hazardous heavy metal could be investigated based on the small displacement in the position of this resonant peak with the changes in the CdCl2 concentration. Notably, any change in CdCl2 concentration has a direct impact on its acoustic properties. The theoretical framework of our research study is essentially based on the 2 × 2 transfer matrix method and the acoustic properties of the constituent materials as well. The optimization of all sensor parameters represents the mainstay of this study to get the best sensor performance. In this regard, the proposed sensor has a remarkably high sensitivity (S = 1904.25 Hz/ppm) over a concentration range of 0 - 10000 ppm. In addition, the sensor has a high quality factor (QF), and figure of merit of 1771.318, and 73529410-5 (ppm-1), respectively. Finally, we believe this sensor could be a key component of a feasible platform for detecting low concentrations of different heavy metal ions in freshwater.

RESUMO

It is common knowledge that the O2 evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half-reaction in the electrolysis of water. However, it is currently difficult to create inexpensive OER electrode materials in a way that is efficient, simple, and environmentally friendly. In this research, metal oxy-hydroxides with numerous oxygen defects (M-OOHv) are created at surface of Cu foam (CF) using a unique, straightforward electro-oxidation reconstitution (ER) process. Different spectroscopic and microscopy methods are used to analyse the electrode characteristics of Al2Cu-MOF@M-OOHv-ER/CF; electrochemical measurements display a lower overpotential (η) of 366 mV @ 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 95.2 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman studies confirm the phase transition of the metal-organic framework (MOF) to the M-OOH, which acts as the active site to boost the OER activity. Through spectroscopic and microscopic investigations, it is determined that the efficiency of bimetallic electrode materials and oxygen vacancies in the M-OOHv have an impact on the electron power density. The manufactured electrode material additionally showed good durability for 50 hours. As a result, the newly developed Al2Cu-MOF@M-OOHv-ER/CF nanomaterial has greater potential for both electrolysis of water and other energy storage equipment.
