RESUMO

Lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskites have recently emerged as a possible alternative to lead-based halide perovskites for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Significant research efforts have been devoted toward device engineering to enhance the performance of Cs2AgBiBr6 double-perovskite-based photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices; however, less attention has been paid to address their intrinsic photophysical properties. In this work, we have shown that the small polaron formation under photoexcitation and polaron localization limits the carrier dynamics in Cs2AgBiBr6 double halide perovskites. Furthermore, temperature-dependent ac conductivity measurement reveals that single polaron hopping is the dominant conduction mechanism. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that a deformed lattice under photoexcitation leads to the formation of small polarons which act as self-trapped states (STSs) and lead to the ultrafast trapping of charge carriers. Our findings provide an in-depth understanding of intrinsic limitations of Cs2AgBiBr6 perovskites, which can be applicable for other bismuth-based semiconductors.

Hand-held, compact and portable sensors for on-site detection of environmental contaminants are in high demand for industry 4.0. Here, we have developed a sensor based on luminescent organic-inorganic metal halide hybrid perovskites nanocrystals (CH3NH3PbBr3) with p-xylylenediamine as an additional capping agent for highly sensitive and selective detection of picric acid (PA), with a good linear range of 1.8 µM-14.3 µM achieving detection of limit (LOD) of 0.3 µM. The electrostatic interaction between PA and the capping ligand of perovskite nanocrystals resulted in significant fluorescence quenching, as revealed by the steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. The applicability of the developed sensor for PA detection was validated with a 3D printed device integrating surface mounting device (SMD) and paper microfluidics. This prototype device was successfully applied as a fluorescence turn-off sensor to detect PA, showing great potential for on-site detection. This 3D-printed paper-based microfluidic optical sensor proved very efficient for naked-eye detection of PA with an inbuilt excitation source, avoiding the requirement of expensive and complex instrumentation.

In this report, we study the hot carrier cooling mechanism of the Cs3Bi2I9 single crystal by using femtosecond transient reflectance (fs-TR) spectroscopy. We find an unusual slow hot carrier cooling associated with longitudinal optical (LO) and coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons (CLAPs) emission during the deexcitation of the hot carriers. We posit the interplay between the hot-carriers and the LO and CLA phonons in subpicosecond to subnanosecond time scales, respectively, by analyzing the TR kinetics upon perturbation with excess energy. Furthermore, we measured the CLAPs propagation velocity in Cs3Bi2I9, the crystal, ranging from 1820 to 2000 ms-1. The elastic constants and frequency of Brillouin oscillations were estimated as 20.08 GPa and 14.66 GHz, respectively. Our discovery delivers new physical insights into how the hot carriers in Cs3Bi2I9 single crystal are coupled with a crystal lattice that controls the hot carrier dynamics.

CONTEXT: Various Ocimum species (Labiateae) are commonly used for the treatment of inflammation, stress, diarrhea, and as an antioxidant drug in the Indian ethnic system of medicine. OBJECTIVE: The present study was carried out to investigate the antimelanoma and radioprotective activity of different species of Ocimum in C(57)BL and Swiss albino mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antimelanoma activity of 50% alcoholic aqueous leaf extract of five species of Ocimum [Ocimum sanctum (SE), Ocimum gratissimum (GE), Ocimum basilicum (BE), Ocimum canum (CE), and Ocimum kilimandscharicum (KE)] alone or in combination with radiotherapy was determined on the basis of tumor volume, body weight, and survival rate of animals. The radioprotective potential of different species of Ocimum was determined by chromosomal aberration assay. The effect of the alcoholic aqueous extract of different species of Ocimum was also evaluated for the estimation of glutathione level and glutathione S-transferase activity in Swiss albino mice. RESULTS: The 50% alcoholic aqueous extract of different species of Ocimum administered orally (200 mg/kg, p.o.) resulted in significant reduction in tumor volume, increase in average body weight, and survival rate of mice. The various extracts showed modulatory influence against lethal irradiation doses of gamma radiation in terms of radiation-induced chromosomal damage, while at the same time induced an increase in reduced glutathione level and GST activity. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate that Ocimum species have antimelanoma and radioprotective activity against B(16)F(10) metastatic melanoma cell line-induced metastasis and could be exploited as one of the potential sources for plant-based pharmaceutical products.

Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as a promising material for device applications. Lead-based perovskites have been widely explored, while investigation of the optical properties of lead-free perovskites remains limited. Lead-halide perovskite single crystals have shown light-induced positive photoconductivity, and as lead-free perovskites are optically active, they are expected to demonstrate similar properties. However, we report here light-induced negative photoconductivity with slow recovery in lead-free Cs3Bi2Cl9 perovskite. Femtosecond transient reflectance (fs-TR) spectroscopy studies further reveal that these electronic transport properties are due to the formation of light-activated metastable trap states within the perovskite crystal. The figure of merits were calculated for Cs3Bi2Cl9 single-crystal detectors, including responsivity (17 mA/W), detectivity (6.23 × 1011 Jones), and the ratio of current in dark to light (∼7160). These observations for Cs3Bi2Cl9 single crystals, which were optically active but showed retroactive photocurrent on irradiation, remain unique for such materials.
