RESUMO

We discuss dynamics of periodically driven open quantum systems. The time evolution of the quantum state is described by the quantum master equation, and the form of the dissipator is chosen so that the instantaneous stationary state is given by the Gibbs distribution. We find that the correlation between the population part and the coherence part of the density operator is induced by an adiabatic gauge potential. Although the introduction of the counterdiabatic term eliminates the correlation, additional correlations prevent convergence to the Gibbs distribution. We study the performance of the control by the counterdiabatic term. The system has three different scales and the performance strongly depends on the relations between their magnitudes. RESUMO

We give a pedagogical introduction to dynamical invariant formalism of shortcuts to adiabaticity. For a given operator form of the Hamiltonian with undetermined coefficients, the dynamical invariant is introduced to design the coefficients. We discuss how the method allows us to mimic adiabatic dynamics and describe a relation to the counterdiabatic formalism. The equation for the dynamical invariant takes a familiar form and is often used in various fields of physics. We introduce examples of Lax pair, quantum brachistochrone and flow equation. This article is part of the theme issue 'Shortcuts to adiabaticity: theoretical, experimental and interdisciplinary perspectives'.

Fucoxanthin is one of the light-harvesting pigments in brown microalgae, which is increasingly gaining attention due to its numerous health-promoting properties. Currently, the production of microalgal fucoxanthin is not yet feasible from an economic perspective. However, the cultivation of microalgae at favourable conditions holds great potential to increase the viability of this fucoxanthin source. Hence, this study aimed to review the fucoxanthin production of microalgae under different conditions systematically. A literature search was performed using the Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed databases. A total of 188 articles were downloaded and 28 articles were selected for the current review by two independent authors. Microalgae appeared to be a more reliable fucoxanthin source compared to macroalgae. Overall, a consensus fucoxanthin production condition was obtained and proposed: light intensity ranging from 10 to 100 µmol/m2/s could achieve a higher fucoxanthin content. However, the optimal light condition in producing fucoxanthin is species-specific. The current review serves as an antecedent by offering insights into the fucoxanthin-producing microalgae response to different culture factors via a systematic analysis. With the current findings and recommendations, the feasibility of producing fucoxanthin commercially could be enhanced and possibly achieve practical and sustainable fucoxanthin production.

We study nonadiabatic effects of geometric pumping. With arbitrary choices of periodic control parameters, we go beyond the adiabatic approximation to obtain the exact pumping current. We find that a geometrical interpretation for the nontrivial part of the current is possible even in the nonadiabatic regime. The exact result allows us to find a smooth connection between the adiabatic Berry phase theory at low frequencies and the Floquet theory at high frequencies. We also study how to control the geometric current. Using the method of shortcuts to adiabaticity with the aid of an assisting field, we illustrate that it enhances the current.

PURPOSE: This work was performed to investigate the effects of tissue microstructure from postmortem rat brain on the shape of the water proton spectrum. METHODS: Perfusion-fixed, resected rat brains (N = 4) were imaged at 9.4T. 3D DTI and 3D echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (EPSI) data were acquired with 150 µm isotropic resolution. DTI data were acquired over 60 directions with b = 3000 s/mm2 . Water spectra were produced from EPSI data acquired over 128 echoes, with 2.9 Hz spectral resolution. A voxel-wise metric reflecting spectral asymmetry about the peak of the resonance was computed and compared with orientation estimates from DTI data by fitting data with the susceptibility anisotropy model. RESULTS: Asymmetric broadening of the water resonance was computed for mixed populations of grey and/or white matter as determined by thresholding the fractional anisotropy. Asymmetry was shown to be differentially affected by tract orientation relative to B0 in high FA voxels, whereas low FA voxels exhibited little sensitivity. Anatomic structures in the hippocampus were also found to produce distinct changes in the water resonance. CONCLUSION: Present results demonstrate that structural variations in tissue architecture cause characteristic, reproducible changes in the water resonance shape. This suggests that water spectra are sensitive to cytoarchitectural variations in brain tissue.

Skilled movements rely on sensory information to shape optimal motor responses, for which the sensory and motor cortical areas are critical. How these areas interact to mediate sensorimotor integration is largely unknown. Here, we measure intercortical coherence between the orofacial motor (MIo) and somatosensory (SIo) areas of cortex as monkeys learn to generate tongue-protrusive force. We report that coherence between MIo and SIo is reciprocal and that neuroplastic changes in coherence gradually emerge over a few days. These functional networks of coherent spiking and local field potentials exhibit frequency-specific spatiotemporal properties. During force generation, theta coherence (2-6 Hz) is prominent and exhibited by numerous paired signals; before or after force generation, coherence is evident in alpha (6-13 Hz), beta (15-30 Hz), and gamma (30-50 Hz) bands, but the functional networks are smaller and weaker. Unlike coherence in the higher frequency bands, the distribution of the phase at peak theta coherence is bimodal with peaks near 0° and ±180°, suggesting that communication between somatosensory and motor areas is coordinated temporally by the phase of theta coherence. Time-sensitive sensorimotor integration and plasticity may rely on coherence of local and large-scale functional networks for cortical processes to operate at multiple temporal and spatial scales.

Classically, it has been hypothesized that reach-to-grasp movements arise from two discrete parietofrontal cortical networks. As part of these networks, the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) has been implicated in the control of reaching movements of the arm, whereas the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) has been associated with the control of grasping movements of the hand. Recent studies have shown that such a strict delineation of function along anatomical boundaries is unlikely, partly because reaching to different locations can alter distal hand kinematics and grasping different objects can affect kinematics of the proximal arm. Here, we used chronically implanted multielectrode arrays to record unit-spiking activity in both PMd and PMv simultaneously while rhesus macaques engaged in a reach-to-grasp task. Generalized linear models were used to predict the spiking activity of cells in both areas as a function of different kinematic parameters, as well as spike history. To account for the influence of reaching on hand kinematics and vice versa, we applied demixed principal components analysis to define kinematics synergies that maximized variance across either different object locations or grip types. We found that single cells in both PMd and PMv encode the kinematics of both reaching and grasping synergies, suggesting that this classical division of reach and grasp in PMd and PMv, respectively, does not accurately reflect the encoding preferences of cells in those areas.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT For reach-to-grasp movements, the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) has been implicated in the control of reaching movements of the arm, whereas the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) has been associated with the control of grasping movements of the hand. Voluntary movement initiation involves the engagement of large populations of motor cortical neurons around movement onset. Despite knowledge of the temporal dynamics that lead to movement, the spatial structure of these dynamics across the cortical surface remains unknown. In data from 4 rhesus macaques, we show that the timing of attenuation of beta frequency local field potential oscillations, a correlate of locally activated cortex, forms a spatial gradient across primary motor cortex (MI). We show that these spatio-temporal dynamics are recapitulated in the engagement order of ensembles of MI neurons. We demonstrate that these patterns are unique to movement onset and suggest that movement initiation requires a precise spatio-temporal sequential activation of neurons in MI.

UNLABELLED: The architectonic subdivisions of the brain are believed to be functional modules, each processing parts of global functions. Previously, we showed that neurons in different regions operate in different firing regimes in monkeys. It is possible that firing regimes reflect differences in underlying information processing, and consequently the firing regimes in homologous regions across animal species might be similar. We analyzed neuronal spike trains recorded from behaving mice, rats, cats, and monkeys. The firing regularity differed systematically, with differences across regions in one species being greater than the differences in similar areas across species. Neuronal firing was consistently most regular in motor areas, nearly random in visual and prefrontal/medial prefrontal cortical areas, and bursting in the hippocampus in all animals examined. This suggests that firing regularity (or irregularity) plays a key role in neural computation in each functional subdivision, depending on the types of information being carried. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: By analyzing neuronal spike trains recorded from mice, rats, cats, and monkeys, we found that different brain regions have intrinsically different firing regimes that are more similar in homologous areas across species than across areas in one species. Because different regions in the brain are specialized for different functions, the present finding suggests that the different activity regimes of neurons are important for supporting different functions, so that appropriate neuronal codes can be used for different modalities.

Studies of mechanisms of feeding behavior are important in a society where aging- and disease-related feeding disorders are increasingly prevalent. It is important to evaluate the clinical relevance of animal models of the disease and the control. Our present study quantifies macaque hyolingual and jaw kinematics around swallowing cycles to determine the extent to which macaque swallowing resembles that of humans. One female and one male adult Macaca mulatta were trained to feed in a primate chair. Videofluoroscopy was used to record kinematics in a sagittal view during natural feeding on solid food, and the kinematics of the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, mandibular jaw, and anterior-, middle-, and posterior-tongue. Jaw gape cycles were defined by consecutive maximum gapes, and the kinematics of the swallow cycles were compared with those of the two consecutive non-swallow cycles preceding and succeeding the swallow cycles. Although there are size differences between macaques and humans, and macaques have shorter durations of jaw gape cycles and hyoid and thyroid upward movements, there are several important similarities between our macaque data and human data reported in the literature: (1) The durations of jaw gape cycles during swallow cycles are longer than those of non-swallow cycles as a result of an increased duration of the jaw-opening phase; (2) Hyoid and thyroid upward movement is linked with a posterior tongue movement and is faster during swallow than non-swallow cycles; (3) Tongue elevation propagates from anterior to posterior during swallow and non-swallow cycles. These findings suggest that macaques can be a useful experimental model for human swallowing studies.

Using shortcuts to adiabaticity, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation that is reduced to a classical nonlinear integrable equation. For a given time-dependent Hamiltonian, the counterdiabatic term is introduced to prevent nonadiabatic transitions. Using the fact that the equation for the dynamical invariant is equivalent to the Lax equation in nonlinear integrable systems, we obtain the counterdiabatic term exactly. The counterdiabatic term is available when the corresponding Lax pair exists and the solvable systems are classified in a unified and systematic way. Multisoliton potentials obtained from the Korteweg-de Vries equation and isotropic XY spin chains from the Toda equations are studied in detail.

We report 2 cases of locally recurrent rectal cancer after intersphincteric resection(ISR)that were controlled with a combination of chemoradiotherapy and abdominoperineal resection(APR). In Case 1, we performed preoperative chemoradiotherapy( TS-1 plus RT 45 Gy)and APR for the local recurrence of ISR. On pathology, viable neoplastic cells were noted. In Case 2, we performed preoperative chemotherapy(Bmab plus mFOLFOX6)and APR for the local recurrence of ISR. On pathology, no viable neoplastic cells were noted. However, a local recurrence developed again 3 months later. Therefore, we performed chemoradiotherapy(TS-1 plus RT 53 Gy). The 2 patients survived without recurrence until now. Their pathology tissues and clinical courses showed that control of local recurrence with only chemoradiotherapy or surgical resection was likely to be difficult. We might be able to improve the prognosis of patients with a combination of chemoradiotherapy and surgical resection.

When reaching to grasp, we coordinate how we preshape the hand with how we move it. To ask how motor cortical neurons participate in this coordination, we examined the interactions between reach- and grasp-related neuronal ensembles while monkeys reached to grasp a variety of different objects in different locations. By describing the dynamics of these two ensembles as trajectories in a low-dimensional state space, we examined their coupling in time. We found evidence for temporal compensation across many different reach-to-grasp conditions such that if one neural trajectory led in time the other tended to catch up, reducing the asynchrony between the trajectories. Granger causality revealed bidirectional interactions between reach and grasp neural trajectories beyond that which could be attributed to the joint kinematics that were consistently stronger in the grasp-to-reach direction. Characterizing cortical coordination dynamics provides a new framework for understanding the functional interactions between neural populations.

We report 3 cases of recurrent hepatic cancer in patients who underwent laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy (LRH). Case 1: A 70-year-old female with ascending colon cancer and liver metastases underwent open right colectomy followed by open S5 resection. Seven months later, the patient experienced a recurrence in the lateral segment and underwent laparoscopy-assisted ( L-A) partial resection. The adhesiolysis around the left liver was performed through a 7-cm upper median incision. Partial resection of the lateral segment was performed by hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) using a median incision. Case 2: A 63-year-old female with metachronous liver metastases from rectal cancer underwent open S4a and S5 resection. Nineteen months later, she experienced a recurrence in S4b and underwent an L-A S4b resection. Adhesiolysis around the previous hepatic transection was performed through a small upper median incision. Mobilization of the liver was performed by HALS. A hepatic transection of S4b was also performed in the upper median incision. Case 3: An 80-year-old female with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence in the lateral segment after open S4 resection underwent L-A lateral segmentectomy. An adhesiolysis, mobilization of the liver, and a hepatic transection were performed by HALS and hybrid technique as described in case 2. In a patient with a history of open hepatectomy, LRH may be extensively indicated by utilizing HALS or a hybrid procedure.

A 53-year-old man presented with a continuous high fever and was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with metastasis to the lung, spleen, and mesenterium. He was treated with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone followed by administration of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) chemotherapy 20 days later. Two days after initiation of CHOP therapy, the patient complained of severe abdominal pain. Perforative peritonitis was diagnosed using abdominal computed tomography. A perforation of the small intestine approximately 160 cm distal to the Treitz ligament was uncovered during emergency laparotomy. The risk of leakage was considered too high for anastomosis of the small intestine to be performed. Further, construction of an intestinal stoma could result in a high-output syndrome that could lead to difficulty in resuming chemotherapy. Based on these considerations, we fixed the anastomotic region to the abdominal wall using a technique similar to construction of an intestinal stoma. Post-operative anastomotic leakage did not occur. Nine days later, a perineal hernia was noted near the anastomotic site and a second operation was performed. The anastomotic site was placed back into the abdominal cavity during this operation. CHOP therapy was resumed 16 days after the first operation.

A 72-year-old woman was diagnosed with liver dysfunction during a medical examination. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple nodules in the left lobe, anterior segment, andposterior segment of the liver, leading to a diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). Extended left lobectomy and partial hepatectomy in the anterior and posterior segment with lymph node dissection was performed. At the time of the operation, small nodules on the peritoneum near the stomach were resected; these nodules were diagnosed as peritoneal disseminations of ICC. The histopathological diagnosis was moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma (T4N0M1, Stage IVB). Adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 was administered for 18 months. Thirty months after the operation, multiple lung metastases were detected by using CT, and chemotherapy with gemcitabine was initiated. Thirty-six months after chemotherapy with gemcitabine, the patient is alive and at home despite her lung metastases, which grew slightly in size. Herein, we report a long-term survival case of ICC with peritoneal dissemination that was successfully treated with surgical resection and adjuvant chemotherapy.

While microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a significant threat, information on MPs <330 µm (SMPs) is limited by the lack of simple quantification methods. We examined the potential application of salps, non-selective filter-feeding tunicates, to estimate in-situ SMP densities. After collection, salp guts were dissected, dissolved, and filtered to analyze MPs using µFTIR. The results showed each gut samples contained 1.96 ± 1.49 MP particles; their polymer composition and size were consistent with those in ambient seawater. When the SMP quantity in salp gut was converted to in-situ densities using previously published feeding parameters, SMP densities ranged between 235 and 1209 particles/m3; they were strongly correlated with those in seawater. Importantly, this method, which is less labor intensive than other methods, could easily characterize in-situ SMP distribution of different marine environments, thus improve the monitoring of their pollution. Furthermore, it could be applied to examine historical contributions of SMPs using archived salp samples.

Though the joints of the arm and hand together comprise 27 degrees of freedom, an ethological movement like reaching and grasping coordinates many of these joints so as to operate in a reduced dimensional space. We used a generalized linear model to predict single neuron responses in primary motor cortex (MI) during a reach-to-grasp task based on 40 features that represent positions and velocities of the arm and hand in joint angle and Cartesian coordinates as well as the neurons' own spiking history. Two rhesus monkeys were trained to reach and grasp one of five objects, located at one of seven locations while we used an infrared camera motion-tracking system to track markers placed on their upper limb and recorded single-unit activity from a microelectrode array implanted in MI. The kinematic trajectories that described hand shaping and transport to the object depended on both the type of object and its location. Modeling the kinematics as temporally extensive trajectories consistently yielded significantly higher predictive power in most neurons. Furthermore, a model that included all feature trajectories yielded more predictive power than one that included any single feature trajectory in isolation, and neurons tended to encode feature velocities over positions. The predictive power of a majority of neurons reached a plateau for a model that included only the first five principal components of all the features' trajectories, suggesting that MI has evolved or adapted to encode the natural kinematic covariations associated with prehension described by a limited set of kinematic synergies.

The distribution of floating plastic debris around the Kuroshio Current which transports plastics from the coastal waters of Asian countries to North Pacific subtropical gyre, was investigated in 2014. The mean abundance and weight of plastic debris on the sea surface were 100,376 counts/km2 and 446.16 g/km2, respectively. Intensive plastic accumulation was observed in the frontal area between the northern edge of the Kuroshio and coastal waters off Shikoku, while a relatively higher abundance in the south of Kuroshio was generally associated with anticyclonic mesoscale eddies. Such an accumulation resulted from the eddy-Kuroshio interactions which are specifically associated with the offshore non-large meandering Kuroshio path. Overall, white, fragmented, small-sized (≤1 mm) particles with polyethylene and polypropylene polymers were dominant. In the southern area of Kuroshio, the contribution of polystyrene and larger-sized plastic was higher, suggesting a rapid influx of fresh particles from western Japan to offshore by the northwest monsoon.
