AIM: This study aimed to evaluate adherence to an antibiotic prophylaxis protocol and its impact on incidence of surgical site infection (SSI). MATERIALS AND METHOD: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted at a teaching hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, from September to November 2015. The population were adults who underwent surgery with surgical antibiotic prophylaxis. The main outcomes measured were incidence of SSI at 30-days postoperatively, protocol adherence and surgical wound complications. STROBE guidelines were followed. RESULTS: Among the 527 participants recruited, a 30-day follow-up was completed by 78.7 % (n = 415). Within this cohort, 57.6 % were females aged over 60 years (36.4 %). The incidence of SSI stood at 9.4 % (n = 39), with dehiscence being the most prevalent complication at 64.1 % (n = 25), followed by increased exudate at 51.3 % (n = 20). Notably, full adherence to the antibiotic prophylaxis protocol was low at 1.7 % (n = 7). The study observed a 60 % increased risk of SSI for every protocol mistake made. Alarmingly, 17.8 % (n = 74) of participants received antibiotic treatment exceeding the stipulated protocol duration. The overall mortality rate stood at 13.5 % (n = 56), with 1 % (n = 4) of these deaths attributed to SSI. CONCLUSION: There is a pressing global necessity to enhance antibiotic management, as underscored by this study's revelation of low adherence to the antibiotic prophylaxis protocol. This lack of adherence correlated with a notable incidence of SSI and subsequent wound complications. Nearly 20 % of participants received prolonged antibiotic treatment. Adhering strictly to the protocol could substantially impact SSI-related outcomes and enhance global antibiotic management.

To investigate whether mother and sibling interactions during the preweaning period influence the histological and electrophysiological characteristics of the sensory sural nerve (SUn) in the adult rat, litters composed of 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 male pups (P) were formed and the pups routinely weighed until postnatal day 60 (PND60). At PND9, 3P and 6P litters showed greater body weight than pups without siblings or from 9P or 12P litters, and such differences in weight were maintained until adulthood. Analysis of maternal licking at PND8 and 9 showed that pups from large litters received fewer licks than pups from small size litters. At PND60, SUn of rats from 6P and 9P litters had greater compound action potential (CAP) amplitude and a higher proportion of axons with large myelin thickness than nerves from rats of 1P, 3P, or 12P litters. SUn of heaviest rats from 9P and 12P litters had greater CAP area and myelination than the lightest rats from the same litters. We propose that a complex interplay of sensory, social, and nutritional factors arising from mother and littermate interactions during the preweaning period influence myelination and the propagation of action potentials in the SUn of adult rats.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms include inappropriate control of anger and severe emotional dysregulation after rejection in daily life. Nevertheless, when using the Cyberball paradigm, a tossing game to simulate social exclusion, the seven basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, disgust, and contempt) have not been exhaustively tracked out. It was hypothesized that these patients would show anger, contempt, and disgust during the condition of exclusion versus the condition of inclusion. When facial emotions are automatically detected by Artificial Intelligence, "blending", -or a mixture of at least two emotions- and "masking", -or showing happiness while expressing negative emotions- may be most easily traced expecting higher percentages during exclusion rather than inclusion. Therefore, face videos of fourteen patients diagnosed with BPD (26 ± 6 years old), recorded while playing the tossing game, were analyzed by the FaceReader software. The comparison of conditions highlighted an interaction for anger: it increased during inclusion and decreased during exclusion. During exclusion, the masking of surprise; i.e., displaying happiness while feeling surprised, was significantly more expressed. Furthermore, disgust and contempt were inversely correlated with greater difficulties in emotion regulation and symptomatology, respectively. Therefore, the automatic detection of emotional expressions during both conditions could be useful in rendering diagnostic guidelines in clinical scenarios.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that affects dopaminergic neurons. The lack of understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of PD pathology makes treating it a challenge. Several pieces of evidence support the protective role of enriched environment (EE) and exercise on dopaminergic neurons. The specific aspect(s) of neuroprotection after exposure to EE have not been identified. Therefore, we have investigated the protective role of EE on dopamine dysregulation and subsequent downregulation of DJ1 protein using in vitro and in vivo models of PD. Our study for the first time demonstrated that DJ1 expression has a direct correlation with dopamine downregulation in PD models and exposure to EE has a significant impact on improving the behavioral changes in PD mice. This research provides evidence that exercise in EE has a positive effect on PD without interfering with the current line of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disruption in elderly has been associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and its transition into Alzheimer's disease (AD). High arousal indices (AIs) during sleep may serve as an early-stage biomarker of cognitive impairment non-dementia (CIND). OBJECTIVE: Using full-night polysomnography (PSG), we investigated whether CIND is related to different AIs between NREM and REM sleep stages. METHODS: Fourteen older adults voluntarily participated in this population-based study that included Mini-Mental State Examination, Neuropsi battery, Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living, and single-night PSG. Subjects were divided into two groups (n = 7 each) according to their results in Neuropsi memory and attention subtests: cognitively unimpaired (CU), with normal results; and CIND, with -2.5 standard deviations in memory and/or attention subtests. AIs per hour of sleep during N1, N2, N3, and REM stages were obtained and correlated with Neuropsi total score (NTS). RESULTS: AI (REM)  was significantly higher in CU group than in CIND group. For the total sample, a positive correlation between AI (REM)  and NTS was found (r = 0.68, p = 0.006), which remained significant when controlling for the effect of age and education. In CIND group, the AI (N2)  was significantly higher than the AI (REM) . CONCLUSION: In CIND older adults, this attenuation of normal arousal mechanisms in REM sleep are dissociated from the relative excess of arousals observed in stage N2. We propose as probable etiology an early hypoactivity at the locus coeruleus noradrenergic system, associated to its early pathological damage, present in the AD continuum.

Introduction. Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) infection occurs with viral genome presence in respiratory secretions (RS) and serum, and therefore both samples can be used for diagnosis.Gap statement. The diagnostic sensitivity of HBoV1 DNA detection in serum and the duration of DNAaemia in severe clinical cases have not been elucidated.Aim. To determine HBoV1 DNA in serum and RS of paediatric patients hospitalized for lower acute respiratory infection (LARI) and to analyse the clinical-epidemiological features of positive cases.Methodology. This was a prospective, transverse study. Physicians selected the clinical situations and obtained paired clinical samples (RS and serum) that were tested by PCR/qPCR for HBoV1. Positive cases were analysed considering time of specimen collection, co-detection, clinical manifestations and viral load; statistical significant level was set at α=0.05.Results. HBoV1 was detected in 98 of 402 cases included (24 %); 18/98 (18 %) patients had the virus detectable in serum and 91/98 (93 %) in RS (P<0.001). Positivity rates were not significantly different in patients with RS and serum collected within or beyond 24 h of admission. Single HBoV1 infection was identified in 39/98 patients (40 %), three patients had HBoV1 in both clinical samples (3/39, 8 %) and 32 (32/39, 82 %) only in RS, 22 of them (69 %) with both clinical samples within 24 h of admission. Cough (P=0.001) and rhinitis (P=0.003) were significantly frequent among them and most patients were diagnosed with bronchiolitis (22/39, 56 %) and pneumonia (9/39, 23 %), which was more frequent compared to cases with co-infection (P=0.04). No significant differences were identified among patients with high, medium or low viral load of HBoV1 regarding rate of positivity in both clinical samples, the time of collection of RS and serum, co-detection, first episode of LARI, clinical manifestations, comorbidity or requirement for assisted ventilation. Intensive care unit (ICU) patients had a significantly higher frequency of detection (P<0.001) and co-detection (P=0.001) compared to patients on standard care.Conclusions. HBoV1 is prevalent among infant patients hospitalized for LARI and including it in the standard testing can add to the aetiological diagnosis in these cases, especially for patients admitted to the ICU. HBoV1 detection in serum did not contribute significantly to the diagnosis as compared to detection in respiratory secretions.

Associations between vaccine breakthrough cases and infection by different SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants have remained largely unexplored. Here we analysed SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences and viral loads from 1,373 persons with COVID-19 from the San Francisco Bay Area from 1 February to 30 June 2021, of which 125 (9.1%) were vaccine breakthrough infections. Vaccine breakthrough infections were more commonly associated with circulating antibody-resistant variants carrying ≥1 mutation associated with decreased antibody neutralization (L452R/Q, E484K/Q and/or F490S) than infections in unvaccinated individuals (78% versus 48%, P = 1.96 × 10-8). Differences in viral loads were non-significant between unvaccinated and fully vaccinated cases overall (P = 0.99) and according to lineage (P = 0.09-0.78). Symptomatic vaccine breakthrough infections had comparable viral loads (P = 0.64), whereas asymptomatic breakthrough infections had decreased viral loads (P = 0.023) compared with infections in unvaccinated individuals. In 5 cases with serial samples available for serologic analyses, vaccine breakthrough infections were found to be associated with low or undetectable neutralizing antibody levels attributable to an immunocompromised state or infection by an antibody-resistant lineage. Taken together, our results show that vaccine breakthrough infections are overrepresented by antibody-resistant SARS-CoV-2 variants, and that symptomatic breakthrough infections may be as efficient in spreading COVID-19 as unvaccinated infections, regardless of the infecting lineage.

BACKGROUND: In Latin America, liver cancer is one of the top causes of cancer mortality. It is the fifth most common cause of death among malignant tumors in Mexico and is the leading cause in Hidalgo State (43.8% of the population living in poverty). OBJECTIVE: To conduct a correlational analysis on the main risk factors for liver cancer in Hidalgo State, Mexico, including municipal disaggregation and comparison with the national level. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive and comparative epidemiological study using Mexican governmental databases covering 1990-2019. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the databases of the General Directorate of Health Information (DGIS) was performed to analyze official death figures, hospital discharges and national and municipal population projections, using specific search criteria defined in the Global Burden of Disease classification, based on the risk factors for liver cancer. RESULTS: Liver cancer rates showed an evident rise in Hidalgo (183%), moving from 21st place in Mexico in 1990 to 9th place in 2019. This increase was correlated with alcoholism. An increasing trend for liver cancer deaths, of 133.89%, is projected for 2030. Females and the population over 60 years of age are more affected. There are some critical regions with liver cancer death rates twice the national rate or more. CONCLUSION: Targeted effective public health strategies should be structured by identifying, characterizing and regionalizing critical marginalized municipalities that are vulnerable to alcoholism and other risk factors for liver cancer. This approach may be helpful for other states in Mexico or similar countries.

BACKGROUND: Osteoclast-like giant cell bladder carcinomas are an extremely unusual and aggressive histological subtype of urothelial carcinomas. Only 30 cases are reported in the international literature. CLINICAL CASE: A 79-year-old male patient attended our Urology department for a six-month history of macroscopic hematuria. As part of its diagnostic protocol, a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis with elimination phase was performed, finding a 12-mm filling defect at the level of the posterior wall of the bladder; subsequently, a cystoscopy was performed confirming the presence of a 1.5 cm bladder tumor, which was completely resected. Pathology analysis with hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed a composition of mononuclear cells and osteoclast-like giant cells; immunohistochemistry was positive for epithelial markers CK AE-1 / AE-3, EMA, P53 and CD68. CONCLUSIONS: These tumors are extremely unusual and aggressive. The only diagnostic method is through immunohistochemistry where the presence of epithelial markers for urothelium in neoplastic cells is confirmed. Radical surgical treatment is recommended and to date there is no proven effective adjuvant treatment. Its median overall survival is 15 months.


INTRODUCCIÓN: los carcinomas de vejiga de células gigantes parecidas a osteoclasto son un subtipo histológico extremadamente inusual y agresivo de los carcinomas uroteliales. Solamente se encuentran reportados 30 casos en la literatura internacional. CASO CLÍNICO: un paciente masculino de 79 años acudió a valoración a nuestro departamento de Urología por un cuadro de hematuria macroscópica de seis meses de evolución. Como parte de su protocolo diagnóstico se realizó una TC de abdomen y pelvis con fase de eliminación, encontrando un defecto de llenado de 12 mm a nivel de la pared posterior de la vejiga; posteriormente se realizó una cistoscopia confirmando la presencia de un tumor vesical de 1.5 cm, el cuál fue resecado en su totalidad. El análisis por Patología con tinción de hematoxilina y eosina reveló una composición por células mononucleares y células gigantes parecidas a osteoclasto; la inmunohistoquímica fue positiva para marcadores epiteliales CK AE-1/AE-3, EMA, P53 y CD68. CONCLUSIONES: estos tumores son extremadamente inusuales y agresivos. El único método diagnóstico es a través de inmunohistoquímica en donde se confirme la presencia de marcadores epiteliales para urotelio en las células neoplásicas. Se recomienda un tratamiento quirúrgico radical y a la fecha no existe un tratamiento adyuvante efectivo demostrado. Su supervivencia media global es de 15 meses.

The immune response of Anopheles mosquitoes to Plasmodium invasion has been extensively studied and shown to be mediated mainly by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS), dual oxidase (DUOX), phenoloxidase (PO), and antimicrobial peptides activity. Here, we studied the correlation between a heat shock insult, transcription of immune response genes, and subsequent susceptibility to Plasmodium berghei infection in Anopheles albimanus. We found that transcript levels of many immune genes were drastically affected by the thermal stress, either positively or negatively. Furthermore, the transcription of genes associated with modifications of nucleic acid methylation was affected, suggesting an increment in both DNA and RNA methylation. The heat shock increased PO and NOS activity in the hemolymph, as well as the transcription of several immune genes. As consequence, we observed that heat shock increased the resistance of mosquitoes to Plasmodium invasion. The data provided here could help the understanding of infection transmission under the ever more common heat waves.

This aim of this clinical trial was to study the effects of divalproex sodium (DVPX) in reducing Reactive/Affective/ Defensive/ Impulsive Aggression (RADI) in youth with Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) in an outpatient clinic over a period of 3 months. We recruited forty participants with Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder. Twenty participants received 12 weeks of openly titrated DVPX, whereas twenty participants served as a comparison control group. Primary efficacy measures were the Clinical Global Improvement-Severity (CGI-S) and CGI-C (Change) scales; secondary efficacy measures included standardized measures of aggression. Based on the CGI-S and CGI-C ratings, the DVPX group showed significant improvement by the last observation. Attrition rates were notably high, which is not surprising given the clinical population studied. This study provides further support for the efficacy of DVPX in decreasing RADI aggression in the context of DBD. These results are particularly noteworthy because the sociotherapeutic structures supporting patients in previous trials were not present.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in adult patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and to compare them with a control group. METHODS: Retrospective case-control study carried out in an adult ICU, from January 2015 to June 2017, with 61 patients who developed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection and the same number of control patients. RESULTS: Most participants were male 65 (60.6%), with a neurological diagnosis 43 (35.2%) and hypertensive 61 (50.0%). In the comparison of the groups, there was a statistically significant difference in relation to mechanical ventilation (p=0.0107), tracheostomy (p=0.0083), death (p=0.0401), urinary catheter (p=0.0420), length of stay (p<0.0001) and severity (p=0.0003). The main factors associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection were: severity (OR= 65.69; CI=3.726-4.808; p=0.0018), use of antimicrobials (OR= 0.047;CI=0.028-0.122;p=0.0024), length of stay (OR=1.19; CI=0.952-1.031; p=0.0285). CONCLUSION: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection is multifactorial and has been associated with length of stay and severity. Use of antimicrobials was a protective factor.

Fiber type composition, organization, and distribution are key elements in muscle functioning. These properties can be modified by intrinsic and/or extrinsic factors, such as undernutrition and injuries. Currently, there is no methodology to quantitatively analyze such modifications. On one hand, we propose a fractal approach to determine fiber type organization, using the fractal correlation method in software Fractalyse. On the other hand, we applied the kernel methodology from machine learning to build radial-basis functions for the spatial distribution of fibers (distribution functions), by dividing into square cells a two-dimensional binary image for the spatial distribution of fibers from a muscle fascicle and mounting on each cell a radial-basis function in such a way that the sum of all cell functions creates a smooth version of the fiber histogram on the cell grid. The distribution functions thus created belong in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space which permits us to regard them as vectors and measure distances and angles between them. In the present study, we analyze fiber type organization and distribution in fascicles (F2, F3, F4, and F5) of the extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDLm) from control and undernourished male rats. Fibers were classified according to the ATPase activity in slow, intermediate, and fast. Then, (x, y) coordinates of fibers were used to build binary images and distribution functions for each fiber type and both conditions. The fractal organization analysis showed that fast and intermediate fibers, from both groups, had a fractal organization within the four fascicles, i.e., the fiber assembly is distributed in clusters. We also show that chronic undernutrition altered the organization of fast fibers in the F3, although it still is considered a fractal organization. Distribution function analysis showed that each fiber type (slow, intermediate, and fast) has a unique distribution within the fascicles, in both conditions. However, chronic undernutrition modified the intra-fascicular fiber type distributions, except in the F2. Altogether, these results showed that the methodology herein proposed allows for analyzing fiber type organization and distribution modifications. On the other side, we show that chronic undernutrition alters not only the fiber type composition but also the organization and distribution, which could affect the muscle functioning, and ultimately, its behavior (e.g., locomotion).

Detection, characterization and classification of patterns within time series from electrophysiological signals have been a challenge for neuroscientists due to their complexity and variability. Here, we aimed to use graph theory to characterize and classify waveforms within biological signals using maxcliques as a feature for a deep learning method. We implemented a compact and easy to visualize algorithm and interface in Python. This software uses time series as input. We applied the maxclique graph operator in order to obtain further graph parameters. We extracted features of the time series by processing all graph parameters through K-means, one of the simplest unsupervised machine learning algorithms. As proof of principle, we analyzed integrated electrical activity of XII nerve to identify waveforms. Our results show that the use of maxcliques allows identification of two distinct types of waveforms that match expert classification. We propose that our method can be a useful tool to characterize and classify other electrophysiological signals in a short time and objectively. Reducing the classification time improves efficiency for further analysis in order to compare between treatments or conditions, e.g., pharmacological trials, injuries, or neurodegenerative diseases.

Here, we present the complete genome sequences of Mycobacterium smegmatis phages Chewbacca, Reptar3000, and Riparian, isolated from soil in Las Vegas, NV. The phages were isolated and annotated by undergraduate students enrolled in the Phage Discovery course offered by the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

RESUMEN La fragmentación del sueño puede asociarse con distintas enfermedades, entre ellas, la demencia. En este sentido, la fragmentación de sueño, indicada por el índice de alertamientos y/o movimientos periódicos de las piernas (MPP), podría ser un marcador temprano de deterioro cognitivo leve (DCL), un síndrome precursor de la demencia. El objetivo del presente estudio fue medir el índice de prevalencia de los alertamientos y de los MPP durante el sueño en un grupo control y un grupo con DCL, así como determinar si hay diferencia entre los grupos en ambos índices y establecer si existe una correlación entre los dos fenómenos. En 9 participantes (3 mujeres controles y 3 mujeres con DCL; y 3 hombres con DCL) (edad: 69.1 ± 5; años de educación: 8 ± 2) se registró una noche de polisomnografía. Se obtuvieron los índices por hora de alertamientos y para cada etapa de sueño, así como los MPP globales y por hora; además se realizaron análisis entre y dentro de cada grupo. Se encontró una correlación positiva y un mayor número de MPP que de alertamientos durante toda la noche en los participantes con DCL. Conocer la prevalencia y asociación de ambos fenómenos contribuye en la formulación de una evaluación más cuidadosa y profunda de los adultos mayores en riesgo de desarrollar DCL y/o demencia.


ABSTRACT Sleep fragmentation may be associated with several diseases, including dementia. In this sense, sleep fragmentation, indicated by the rates of arousals and/or periodic leg movements (PLM), could be an early marker of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a syndromic stage prior to dementia. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the index of PLM with that of arousals and correlate both indexes in people with MCI and without MCI during all sleep stages. In 9 participants (3 control women and 3 women with MCI; and 3 men with MCI) (ages: 69.1 ± 5; years of education: 8 ± 2), one night of polysomnography was performed. Hourly rates of arousals and PLM were scored from each sleep stage. Analyses were performed within and between PLM and arousals for each group. Significant differences and a positive correlation were found between the arousal and the PLM rates for the group with MCI during the whole night. Knowledge of the prevalence and the association of both phenomena may contribute to a more careful and thorough evaluation of older adults at risk of developing MCI and/or dementia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is considered one of the most feared chronic conditions among the older adult population since its incidence is approximately twice more frequent than that of dementia. In Mexico, no studies or reports of older adults using technology for cognitive interventions have been published, given that institutions usually frame cognitive stimulation tasks in paper and pencil (ie, in the traditional manner). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to create and analyze the effect, viability, and impact of a mobile app for cognitive stimulation implemented among a group of elderly adults (over 60 years of age) from the state of Hidalgo in Mexico. METHODS: This study was a nonprobabilistic pilot trial using convenience sampling. An intervention was implemented among a group of 22 older adults between 60 and 80 years of age over 12 weeks. Half of the older adults were stimulated with the mobile app (experimental group) and the other half followed the traditional paper and pencil training (control group). Assessments with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Neuropsi, a neuropsychological test validated in Mexico, were done before and after both cognitive stimulations. RESULTS: According to the analyzed data, 6/11 (55%) participants from the experimental group obtained better results in their cognitive skills, and 5 (45%) of the adults maintained their score, given that the participants were able to execute the exercises repetitively. Meanwhile, for the control group, only 3/11 (27%) participants obtained better results in the postevaluation. Significant values for results of the MMSE were obtained in the postevaluation for the experimental group compared to the control group, while results did not show significant differences in the Neuropsi. Regarding the validation of the app, all the participants evaluated its pertinence positively. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention data show that the experimental group obtained better results in the postevaluation given that the participants were able to execute the exercises repetitively. The control group could not accomplish this since they had to respond on the manual and no further attempts were provided. However, both groups increased their score in the neuropsychological evaluations. This suggests that a longer and more frequent intervention is required. We present the complete genome sequences of four phages that infect Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood disease in honeybees. The phages were isolated from beehives and beeswax products from Las Vegas, Nevada. The genomes are 50 to 55 kbp long and use the "direct terminal repeats" DNA-packaging strategy.

In Older Adults (OAs), Electroencephalogram (EEG) slowing in frontal lobes and a diminished muscle atonia during Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM) have each been effective tracers of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), but this relationship remains to be explored by non-linear analysis. Likewise, data provided by EEG, EMG (Electromyogram) and EOG (Electrooculogram)-the three required sleep indicators-during the transition from REM to Non-REM (NREM) sleep have not been related jointly to MCI. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to explore, with results for Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and multichannel DFA (mDFA), the Color of Noise (CN) at the NREM to REM transition in OAs with MCI vs. subjects with good performances. The comparisons for the transition from NREM to REM were made for each group at each cerebral area, taking bilateral derivations to evaluate interhemispheric coupling and anteroposterior and posterior networks. In addition, stationarity analysis was carried out to explore if the three markers distinguished between the groups. Neuropsi and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were administered, as well as other geriatric tests. One night polysomnography was applied to 6 OAs with MCI (68.1 ± 3) and to 7 subjects without it (CTRL) (64.5 ± 9), and pre-REM and REM epochs were analyzed for each subject. Lower scores for attention, memory and executive funcions and a greater index of arousals during sleep were found for the MCI group. Results confirmed that EOGs constituted significant markers of MCI, increasing the CN for the MCI group in REM sleep. The CN of the EEG from the pre-REM to REM was higher for the MCI group vs. the opposite for the CTRL group at frontotemporal areas. Frontopolar interhemispheric scaling values also followed this trend as well as right anteroposterior networks. EMG Hurst values for both groups were lower than those for EEG and EOG. Stationarity analyses showed differences between stages in frontal areas and right and left EOGs for both groups. These results may demonstrate the breakdown of fractality of areas especially involved in executive functioning and the way weak stationarity analyses may help to distinguish between sleep stages in OAs.

The ability to predict regular events can be adaptive for nonhuman animals living in an otherwise unpredictable environment. Animals may exhibit behavioral changes preceding a predictable event; such changes reflect anticipatory behavior. Anticipatory behavior is broadly defined as a goal-directed increase in activity preceding a predictable event and can be useful for assessing well being in animals in captivity. Anticipation may look different in different animals, however, necessitating methods to generate and study anticipatory behaviors across species. This article includes a proposed method for generating and describing anticipatory behavior in zoos using behavioral conditioning. The article also includes discussion of case studies of the proposed method with 2 animals at the San Francisco Zoo: a silverback gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and a red panda (Ailurus fulgens). The study evidence supports anticipation in both animals. As behavioral conditioning can be used with many animals, the proposed method provides a practical approach for using anticipatory behavior to assess animal well being in zoos.
