PURPOSE: To evaluate the rate of and time to complete vascularization in premature infants and to explore associated factors. METHODS: A monocentric, retrospective cohort study including 541 premature infants who underwent screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) between July 2016 and June 2019. Patients underwent regular dilated fundus examinations with indirect ophthalmoscopy until complete vascularization. The worse eye of each patient was included for analyses. The proportion of infants with complete retinal vascularization at the last visit and the time to full vascularization was analyzed. RESULTS: Among all infants (average gestational age 31.29 ± 3.12 weeks), 490 (90.57%) had complete records of retinal vascularization outcomes, of whom 439 (89.59%) achieved complete vascularization. The average postmenstrual age for complete vascularization was 45.39 ± 11.04 weeks, and 95.22% achieved completion before 64 weeks of postmenstrual age. Retinopathy of prematurity developed in 118 (22.56%) infants; 33 (6.10%) received antivascular endothelial growth factor treatment. For all infants screened for ROP, lower birth weight, presence of ROP, and antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy predicted delayed complete vascularization; for infants diagnosed with ROP, only lower birth weight predicted delayed complete vascularization. Subgroup analysis showed significant differences between patients without ROP, with untreated ROP, and with treated ROP in time to complete vascularization and its rate (99.7%, 66.2%, and 16.7%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Lower birth weight predicted delayed complete vascularization. Antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy and the presence of ROP, including ROP severity, may also affect time to complete vascularization. These findings should help improve the understanding and management of persistent avascular retina in preterm infants.

PURPOSE: To evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes after intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) therapy in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) infants compared with those not exposed to IVB. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The primary concern regarding IVB treatment of ROP is the potential systemic side effects, especially the risk of causing severe neurodevelopmental impairment (sNDI). Results regarding neurodevelopmental outcomes after IVB therapy are conflicting. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis and searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for related publications from inception through March 12, 2020. The eligibility criteria were as follows: comparative studies of ROP patients that (1) included IVB as a treatment arm, (2) included a control group without bevacizumab treatment, and (3) reported on at least 1 neurodevelopmental outcome, such as sNDI, Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley III), composition scores, or cerebral palsy (CP). The primary outcome was sNDI, with the odds ratio (OR) calculated. Secondary outcomes were mean differences (MDs) for cognitive, language, and motor scores (Bayley III) and OR for CP. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. RESULTS: Eight studies, 6 including laser-controlled ROP infants and 2 including ROP infants not requiring treatment, were included. The weighted OR for sNDI in the IVB group was 1.39 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98-1.97). The weighted MDs were -1.92 (95% CI, -4.73 to 0.88), -1.32 (95% CI, -4.65 to 1.99), and -3.66 (95% CI, -6.79 to -0.54) for cognitive, language, and motor scores in Bayley III, respectively. The OR for CP was 1.20 (95% CI, 0.56-2.55). No differences were observed between the preset subgroups comprising laser-controlled ROP infants and ROP infants not requiring treatment. The current quality of evidence was rated as low (sNDI and all Bayley III scores) to very low (CP). CONCLUSIONS: Risk of sNDI was not increased in ROP patients after IVB treatment. Bayley III scores were similar in the IVB and control groups, except for a minor difference in motor performance. These findings suggest that the risk of additional sNDI after IVB treatment is low. Randomized trials are warranted to provide a higher quality of evidence.

Biochemical analysis of human body fluids is a frequent and fruitful strategy for disease diagnosis. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics offers the tantalizing possibility of providing rapid diagnostic results in non-laboratory settings. Successful diagnostic testing using body fluids has been reported on in the literature; however, small-volume detection devices, which offer remarkable advantages such as portability, inexpensiveness, capacity for mass production, and tiny sample volume requirements have not been thoroughly discussed. Here, we review progress in this research field, with a focus on developments since 2015. In this review article, we provide a summary of articles that have detailed the development of small-volume detection strategies using clinical samples over the course of the last 5 years. Topics covered include small-volume detection strategies in ophthalmology, dermatology or plastic surgery, otolaryngology, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. In ophthalmology, advances in technology could be applied to examine tear or anterior chamber (AC) fluid for glucose, lactoferrin, interferon, or VEGF. These approaches could impact detection and care for diseases including diabetic mellitus, dry-eye disease, and age-related maculopathy. Early detection and easy monitoring are critical approaches for improving overall care and outcome. In dermatology or plastic surgery, small-volume detection strategies have been applied for passive or interactive wound dressing, wound healing monitoring, and blister fluid analysis for autoimmune disease diagnosis. In otolaryngology, the analysis of nasal secretions and mucosa could be used to differentiate between allergic responses and infectious diseases. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis could be applied in neurodegenerative diseases, central neural system infection and tumor diagnosis. Other small-volume fluids that have been analyzed for diagnostic and monitoring purposes include semen and cervico-vaginal fluids. We include more details regarding each of these fluids, associated collection and detection devices, and approaches in our review.

PURPOSE: To report the short-term outcomes of a modified small-incision technique for implantation of scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (IOLs) using Gore-Tex sutures. METHODS: A retrospective, interventional, consecutive case series was conducted. From June 2019 to February 2020, 10 patients underwent small-incision scleral-fixated IOL implantation using Gore-Tex sutures at a tertiary referral center. Visual and anatomical outcomes and complications were recorded with a minimum follow-up period of 3 months. Surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and IOL-induced astigmatism were measured. RESULTS: The mean follow-up duration (range) was 396 (240-573) days. Best-corrected visual acuity improved significantly from logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (logMAR) 0.88 ± 0.65 (Snellen equivalent: 20/153) preoperation to logMAR = 0.30 ± 0.51 (Snellen equivalent: 20/40) at final follow-up (P = .008). The estimated SIA and IOL-induced astigmatism were 0.61 diopters (D) ± 0.49D and 0.40D ± 0.36D, respectively. No intraoperative complications occurred. The postoperative complications, which included ocular hypertension (20%), cystoid macular edema (30%), and vitreous hemorrhage (20%), were transient and resolved with topical medication. CONCLUSIONS: The modified small-incision technique for implantation of scleral-fixated IOLs using Gore-Tex sutures was well tolerated in all patients, with favorable postoperative visual outcomes and minimal SIA and IOL-induced astigmatism.

IMPORTANCE: The association between visual deficits and attention disorders has been reported but remains unproven. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with amblyopia. DESIGN: Population-based, cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: The dataset from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database in 2000 to 2010. METHODS: A total of 6817 patients aged <18 years with newly diagnosed amblyopia were identified. Four age- and sex-matched controls without amblyopia were included for each patient, that is, 27268 controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the risk of ADHD. The secondary outcomes were age at ADHD onset and use of ADHD medication. RESULTS: During a mean observation period of 7.18 years, the incidence of ADHD per 1000 person-years was 7.02 in the amblyopia group and 4.61 in the control group (P < 0.0001). The ADHD risk in the amblyopia group was 1.81 times that in the control group (hazard ratio 1.81; 95% confidence interval 1.59-2.06). After stratification by amblyopia subtype, the greatest risk was in the deprivation type (hazard ratio 2.14; 95% confidence interval 1.56-2.92) followed by the strabismic (hazard ratio 2.09; 95% confidence interval 1.15-3.79) and refractive (hazard ratio 1.76; 95% confidence interval 1.54-2.02) types. Age at ADHD onset was younger in the amblyopia group (median 8.14 vs 8.45 years; P = 0.0096). The average duration of neuropsychiatric medication use was comparable between groups (P = 0.98). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The ADHD risk is higher in children with amblyopia.

PURPOSE: To investigate the microstructural characteristics of lattice degenerations before and after laser photocoagulation in myopic eyes by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Twenty-five eyes of 25 consecutive patients at the High Myopia Clinic of the National Taiwan University Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Myopic eyes with peripheral lattice degeneration were enrolled in the study. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), axial length measurement, color fundus photography was performed. SD-OCT analyses on the lattice degeneration were performed before and after prophylactic laser photocoagulation. All patients were followed for at least 6 months. RESULTS: In total, 25 myopic eyes with peripheral lattice degenerations were studied. The mean refractive error was -9.92 ± 4.77 Diopters (D) with 21 (84%) of the eye being highly myopic (Over -6.0 D). The average axial length was 27.7 ± 1.86 mm. In these myopic eyes, retinal thinning was the most common finding (92%), followed by vitreoretinal traction (72%), retinoschisis (44%), vitreous membrane with deposits (36%), and retinal break with subretinal fluid (4%). A blunting effect of the vitreoretinal tractions was found after laser photocoagulation. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge we firstly investigated the pre- and post-laser photocoagulation microstructural changes using SD-OCT. It demonstrated a beneficial effect of retinoplasty, which released vitreoretinal tractions after laser photocoagulation. Combined with the findings of subtle microstructural retinal breaks and subretinal fluid, early prophylactic laser treatment warrants sincere consideration in these myopic eyes.

The aim of this study was to assess whether a correlation exists between fine particles (PM2.5) levels and number of hospital admissions for hypertension in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Hospital admission frequency and ambient air pollution data were obtained for Kaohsiung for 2009-2013. A time-stratified case-crossover method was used to estimate relative risk for hospital admissions, controlling for weather, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for a 10 µg/m3 increment of PM2.5 for lags from days 0 to 6. Data showed no significant associations between PM2.5 levels and number of hypertension-related hospital admissions on warm days (>25°C). However, on cool days (<25°C), a significant positive association was found with frequency of hypertension admissions in the single-pollutant model (without adjusting for other pollutants) with a 10 µg/m3 rise in PM2.5 on day of admission (lag 0) associated with a 12% increase in number of admissions for hypertension. In the two-pollutant model, the association of PM2.5 with rate of hypertension hospitalizations remained significant after including SO2 or O3 on lag day 0. Data demonstrate that an association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 and elevated risk of hypertension-related hospital admissions may exist in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a tropical city.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy, and triamcinolone-assisted vitrectomy for congenital cataract. METHODS: This retrospective study included 34 patients younger than 72 months who underwent lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy, and triamcinolone-assisted vitrectomy with or without intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for cataract at the National Taiwan University Hospital from July 2006 to December 2012. RESULTS: Fifty-one eyes from 34 patients with cataract (unilateral in 17 patients, bilateral in 17 patients) were included. The mean age at surgery was 26.74 months (range: 2-72 months). The mean postoperative follow-up was 27.8 months (range: 6-72 months). Primary IOL implantation was performed in 25 eyes, 21 of which had the IOL implanted in the capsular bag. Fifty eyes had a central round pupil. The median logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity was 0.3 in patients with unilateral cataract and 0.1 in those with bilateral cataract. Three eyes (5.9%) developed visual axis opacification (VAO) and required further surgery. Univariate analysis using Fisher's exact test indicated that surgery in the first 12 months of life was significantly associated with development of VAO (p=0.047). The incidence of postoperative VAO was approximately 15.8% in this age group. CONCLUSION: Triamcinolone-assisted vitrectomy can be used in pediatric cataract surgery without serious long-term adverse effects. While the incidence of VAO is low, it appears unavoidable in approximately one-sixth of patients who undergo surgery before 12 months of age.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical features and surgical outcomes in patients with epiretinal membrane-induced full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs). METHODS: Consecutive cases with epiretinal membrane-induced FTMH followed by a single surgeon were retrospectively reviewed (study group, 24 cases). The criteria of epiretinal membrane-induced FTMH selection were 1) documented lamellar macular hole before FTMH formation, 2) FTMH with lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation at the hole edge, and 3) FTMH with wider inner opening and narrower base. Consecutively treated Stage 2 (Control A, 20 cases) and Stage 4 (Control B, 22 cases) MH patients served as controls. All patients were followed up for at least 12 months after treatment. RESULTS: Patients in the study group were younger and had a higher rate of high myopia than Controls A and B. The average hole size (203.6 ± 104.9 µm) was similar to that in Control A group and smaller than that in Control B group; the postoperative visual improvement (2-3 lines in Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study) was lower than that in Control A and B groups. Similar results were found when excluding high myopia cases from the study group. CONCLUSION: Epiretinal membrane-induced FTMH has distinct features from the typical Stage 2 or 4 FTMH. Despite the small size, visual improvement is not as good as that in Stage 2 FTMH.

In this study, novel aminothiazole-paeonol derivatives were synthesized and characterized using ¹H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, IR, mass spectroscopy, and high performance liquid chromatography. All the new synthesized compounds were evaluated according to their anticancer effect on seven cancer cell lines. The experimental results indicated that these compounds possess high anticancer potential regarding human gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS cells) and human colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29 cells). Among these compounds, N-[4-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)thiazol-2-yl]-4-methoxybenzenesulfonamide (13c) had the most potent inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 4.0 µM to AGS, 4.4 µM to HT-29 cells and 5.8 µM to HeLa cells. The 4-fluoro-N-[4-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)thiazol-2-yl]benzenesulfonamide (13d) was the second potent compound, showing IC50 values of 7.2, 11.2 and 13.8 µM to AGS , HT-29 and HeLa cells, respectively. These compounds are superior to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for relatively higher potency against AGS and HT-29 human cancer cell lines along with lower cytotoxicity to fibroblasts. Novel aminothiazole-paeonol derivatives in this work might be a series of promising lead compounds to develop anticancer agents for treating gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of prolonged cooling on cardiac and cerebral injury in animals under cardiac arrest. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were equally randomized to normothermia, 5H1, 5H2, 7H1, 7H2, and 7H4 groups. The first number in the group name indicated ventricular fibrillation duration (minutes), the middle H indicated hypothermia, and the last number signified hypothermia duration (hours). Ventricular fibrillation was induced and untreated for 5 minutes (normothermia, 5H1, and 5H2) or 7 minutes (7H1, 7H2, and 7H4) followed by 1 minute of cardiopulmonary resuscitation followed by electric shocks. Hypothermia was initiated simultaneously with cardiopulmonary resuscitation initiation and maintained for 1 hour (5H1 and 7H1), 2 hours (5H2 and 7H2) or 4 hours (7H4). RESULTS: There were 12 rats in each group. Compared with the 7H1 group, the 7H4 group had significantly better systolic function (dp/dt40) and cardiac output within the early postcardiac arrest period. Histologic examination disclosed less myocardial and hippocampal damage in the 7H4 group than the 7H1 group and in the 5H2 group than the 5H1 group. Plasma troponin I, fatty acid-binding protein, and S-100ß concentrations were significantly lower in the 7H4 and 5H2 groups. The 7H4 and 5H2 groups survived statistically longer than the groups with shorter cooling duration. CONCLUSION: Slightly prolonging hypothermia may mitigate myocardial and cerebral damage and improve survival and neurologic outcomes in a rat model of ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma is a potentially fatal disease, and its incidence and mortality varies among different countries and periods. METHODS: This is a nationwide population-based retrospective study from January 1980 to December 2019 in Taiwan. Patients diagnosed as retinoblastoma were identified from the Taiwan National Cancer Registry. To update the literature on retinoblastoma incidence, mortality and trends in Taiwan, we analysed changes in incidence and survival rates over time according to sex, diagnostic age, laterality and treatment. RESULTS: During 1980-2019, the incidence of retinoblastoma in Taiwan was 1 per 16 489 live births (95% CI: 13 415-19 564). The diagnostic age decreased from 2.21 ± 0.26 during 1980-1984 to 1.24 ± 0.26 during 1985-2019. Compared with that observed during 1980-1989, the incidence rate observed after 1990 increased significantly in children aged <10 years (RR: 1.62-2.40, P = 0.0049 to < 0.0001). From 1980 to 2019, the incidence rate for the 0-4-year age group increased and that for the 5-9-year age group remained constant. The mean diagnostic age for bilateral retinoblastoma (0.36 ± 0.47 years) was significantly less than that for unilateral retinoblastoma (1.37 ± 0.35 years) during 2007-2019 (P < 0.0001). The 10-year survival rate was highest in the enucleation group (89.8%) compared with radiotherapy (52.2%) and others (70.0%; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: During 1980-2019 in Taiwan, the incidence of retinoblastoma increased significantly, and the diagnostic age decreased, which are similar to the ones from other developed countries. However, the survival rate was still lower than that of most developed countries.

Identification of an early biomarker and effective testing device to differentiate dry eye disease secondary to autoimmune disease (Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease) from non-Sjögren's dry eye disease are prerequisites for appropriate treatment. We aimed to demonstrate the capacity of a new photo-detection device to evaluate tear lactoferrin levels as a tool for differentiating systemic conditions associated with dry eye disease. Patients with non-Sjögren's and Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease (n = 54 and n = 52, respectively) and controls (n = 11) were enrolled. All participants completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire. Tear collection was performed with Schirmer test, and tear break-up time was examined using a slit lamp. Tear lactoferrin was evaluated using our newly developed photo-detection device. The average lactoferrin concentration was significantly lower in samples from patients with non-Sjögren's dry eye disease (0.337 ± 0.227 mg/mL, n = 54) and Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease (0.087 ± 0.010 mg/mL, n = 52) than in control samples (1.272 ± 0.54 mg/mL, n = 11) (p < 0.0001). Further, lactoferrin levels were lower in patients with Sjögren's syndrome dry eye disease than in those with non-Sjögren's dry eye disease (p < 0.001). Our cost-effective, antibody-free, highly sensitive photo-detection device for evaluating tear lactoferrin levels can assist ophthalmologists in differentiating different types of dry eye diseases.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to report the complications of sutureless intrascleral (SIS) intraocular lens (IOL) fixation and its management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective, consecutive interventional case series of patients with intra or postoperative complications after SIS IOL fixation during the technical learning curve of vitreoretinal surgeons from three Taiwanese referral hospitals. The used surgical techniques were the Scharioth technique for intrascleral tunnel fixation, Yamane technique (double-needle scleral fixation), and modified Yamane technique (double-needle flanged haptic scleral fixation). The IOL models and surgical instruments used as well as each patient's ocular characteristics and complication management were recorded. RESULTS: Of the eight included patients, the complications of 3 (37.5%) and 5 (62.5%) were noted intraoperatively and postoperatively, respectively. Haptic-related complications, including haptic breakage, slippage, and haptic disinsertion, occurred in six eyes. Other complications included uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome, retinal detachment, and IOL tilt. For the two patients with haptic slippage, repositioning was achieved using a modified cow-hitch technique that resulted in favorable IOL centration and restored visual acuity. CONCLUSION: Most complications surgeons encountered during their early exposure to SIS IOL fixation were haptic related. Surgeons should be aware of such complications to prevent and manage them during surgery. Our modified cow-hitch technique could be used to reposition IOLs with unilateral haptic slippage.

INTRODUCTION: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) and asphyxia account for most cardiac arrests but differ in cardiac arrest course, neurologic deficit, and myocardial damage. In VF resuscitation, cardiac mitochondria were known to be damaged via excess generation of reactive oxygen species. This study evaluated the difference of cardiac mitochondrial damages between VF and asphyxial cardiac arrests. METHODS: In the VF + electrical shock (ES) group, VF was induced and untreated for 5 minutes, followed by 1 minute of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and 1 ES of 5 J. Animals were killed immediately after ES. In the asphyxia group, cardiac arrest was induced by airway obstruction, and then pulselessness was maintained for 5 minutes, followed by 1 minute of CPR. The animals were killed immediately after CPR. The histology and ultrastructural changes of myocardium and complex activities and respiration of mitochondria were evaluated. The mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening was measured based on mitochondrial swelling rate. RESULTS: The histopathologic examinations showed myocardial necrosis and mitochondrial damage in both cardiac arrests. Instead of regional damages of myocardium in the VF + ES group, the myocardial injury in the asphyxia group distributed diffusely. The asphyxia group demonstrated more severe mitochondrial damage than the VF + ES group, which had a faster mitochondrial swelling rate, more decreased cytochrome c oxidase activity, and more impaired respiration. CONCLUSIONS: Both VF and asphyxial cardiac arrests caused myocardial injuries and mitochondrial damages. Asphyxial cardiac arrest presented more diffuse myocardial injuries and more severe mitochondrial damages than VF cardiac arrest.

Purpose: We formulated and tested ensemble learning models to classify axial length (AXL) from choroidal thickness (CT) as indicated on fovea-centered, 2D single optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study. Participants: We analyzed 710 OCT images from 355 eyes of 188 patients. Each eye had 2 OCT images. Methods: The CT was estimated from 3 points of each image. We used five machine-learning base algorithms to construct the classifiers. This study trained and validated the models to classify the AXLs eyes based on binary (AXL < or > 26 mm) and multiclass (AXL < 22 mm, between 22 and 26 mm, and > 26 mm) classifications. Results: No features were redundant or duplicated after an analysis using Pearson's correlation coefficient, LASSO-Pattern search algorithm, and variance inflation factors. Among the positions, CT at the nasal side had the highest correlation with AXL followed by the central area. In binary classification, our classifiers obtained high accuracy, as indicated by accuracy, recall, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), F1 score, and area under ROC curve (AUC) values of 94.37, 100, 90.91, 100, 86.67, and 95.61%, respectively. In multiclass classification, our classifiers were also highly accurate, as indicated by accuracy, weighted recall, weighted PPV, weighted NPV, weighted F1 score, and macro AUC of 88.73, 88.73, 91.21, 85.83, 87.42, and 93.42%, respectively. Conclusions: Our binary and multiclass classifiers classify AXL well from CT, as indicated on OCT images. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed classifiers and provided an assistance tool for physicians.

Strabismus is associated with amblyopia and a lower quality of life. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common among children and adolescents, and influences their academic, vocational, and social life. Previous studies have suggested an association between strabismus and ADHD. Using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2000 and 2010, we performed a large-scale cohort study comparing the incidence, risk factors, and severity of ADHD in children with and without strabismus. A total of 2049 patients <18 years old with newly diagnosed strabismus (esotropia: 404; exotropia: 1645) were identified, and 8196 age- and sex-matched controls without strabismus were also included. After an average of 6.5 ± 2.9 years of follow-up, the incidence of ADHD per 1000 person-years was 5.39 in the strabismus group (esotropia: 9.93; exotropia: 4.11) and 3.23 in the control group. The cumulative incidence of ADHD was significantly greater in the esotropia (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.04; 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.36-3.06; p = 0.0007) and exotropia groups (HR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.03-2.03; p = 0.038) than in the controls. Patients with strabismus had more comorbidities than those without (p < 0.05). In summary, this large-scale study found a higher cumulative incidence of ADHD in patients with strabismus, especially in those with esotropia.

Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has been used to observe the morphology of the palisades of Vogt (POV) with satisfactory resolutions. In this study, we used SD-OCT to examine the microstructure of the POV in ocular surface disorders with limbal involvement. We detect subclinical limbal pathologies based on five parameters, including (1) decreased epithelial thickness, (2) loss of the sharp stromal tip, (3) loss of the smooth epithelial-stromal interface, (4) dilated stromal vessels, and (5) decreased POV density. Eighteen eyes of 10 patients with advancing wavelike epitheliopathy (AWE) and 15 eyes of 9 patients with phlyctenular keratitis/ocular rosacea were recruited. SD-OCT could detect abnormal changes in the POV in 100% of the lesion sites. In presumed-healthy areas of the diseased eyes diagnosed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, SD-OCT detected abnormal changes in the POV in 100% of the eyes in both groups. In patients with unilateral disease, abnormal changes in the POV were detected by SD-OCT in 50% and 100% of presumed-healthy eyes diagnosed by slit-lamp biomicroscopy in the AWE group and phlyctenular keratitis/ocular rosacea group, respectively. SD-OCT is powerful in detecting POV changes in ocular surface disorders and can provide useful information that cannot be provided by slit-lamp biomicroscopy.

Three-dimensional (3D) configuration of in vitro cultivated cells has been recognised as a valuable tool in developing stem cell and cancer cell therapy. However, currently available imaging approaches for live cells have drawbacks, including unsatisfactory resolution, lack of cross-sectional and 3D images, and poor penetration of multi-layered cell products, especially when cells are cultivated on semitransparent carriers. Herein, we report a prototype of a full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) system with isotropic submicron spatial resolution in en face and cross-sectional views that provides a label-free, non-invasive platform with high-resolution 3D imaging. We validated the imaging power of this prototype by examining (1) cultivated neuron cells (N2A cell line); (2) multilayered, cultivated limbal epithelial sheets (mCLESs); (3) neuron cells (N2A cell line) and mCLESs cultivated on a semitransparent amniotic membrane (stAM); and (4) directly adherent colonies of neuron-like cells (DACNs) covered by limbal epithelial cell sheets. Our FF-OCT exhibited a penetrance of up to 150 µm in a multilayered cell sheet and displayed the morphological differences of neurons and epithelial cells in complex coculture systems. This FF-OCT is expected to facilitate the visualisation of cultivated cell products in vitro and has a high potential for cell therapy and translational medicine research.
