We report on how Co substitution of the Fe sites of pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) influences the crystal structure, high-temperature electric permittivity, impedance, electronic structure, magnetic, and optical properties via experimental and theoretical investigations. The pseudobrookite phase contains two types of octahedral sites, Fe atoms reside on type of the sites while Ti on the others and replacing Fe with Co can have a huge influence on one or more physical properties that can render the material more useful for solar energy applications. X-ray diffraction and high-temperature electric permittivity/impedance were the experimental tools used. A temperature range of 20-300 °C and a frequency range of 100 Hz to 1 MHz were used for studying various types of relaxation mechanism via impedance analysis, including grains, grain boundaries, and interfacial effects. To explore the electronic structure, magnetic, and optical properties from first principles, dispersion-corrected density functional theory (PBE-D2/U) was employed. The structure as well as the electric impedance properties are impacted slightly by the Co substitution of Fe in Fe2TiO5 whereas the electronic structure and magnetic properties are influenced significantly. The bandgap is reduced slightly and the average magnetic moment per Fe ion is reduced upon Co substitution of Fe in Fe2TiO5.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of pure and doped cobalt ferrite where 25% of Fe3+ ions were replaced by Al3+, Ga3+, and In3+ ions, respectively, i.e., CoFe1.5X0.5O4 (X = Al, Ga, and In). The ferrite compositions were successfully synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray powder diffraction method established that all ferrite samples had a spinel unit cell structure with the Fd3[combining macron]m (No. 227) space group. The lattice constants of ferrites increased from 8.382 Å (for undoped CoFe2O4) to 8.520 Å (for In-doped cobalt ferrite) in direct relation to the dopant ion size. The magnetic properties were obtained at 4.3 K and 300 K. At 4.3 K, the In-doped CoFe2O4 showed the highest saturation magnetic moment of 4.68 µB f.u.-1, while Al-doped CoFe2O4 showed the smallest value of 2.72 µB f.u.-1. The Fe3+ distribution among the spinel tetrahedral and octahedral sites was determined from the Mössbauer spectra. From ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy the direct optical bandgaps were determined, which have values between 1.20 eV and 1.28 eV for these ferrites. The ferrite compositions were also studied theoretically using plane-wave density functional theory using the CASTEP code where it was revealed that arrangements of the non-magnetic cations at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites strongly influence the electronic structure, the bandgap value, and the net magnetic moment per formula unit. Light Al3+ ions at the octahedral site give a low value of the net magnetic moment while the heavier Ga3+ and In3+ ions at the tetrahedral sites of the spinel give an enhanced magnetic moment. The magnetic moment values obtained from theoretical calculations match very well with the experimental values. Moreover, the theoretical calculations reveal that there exists a strong p-d hybridization among the oxygen and magnetic ions, which is affected by the non-magnetic dopant ions. The change in hybridization with the non-magnetic ion doping is responsible for the altered magnetic moments of the doped ferrites. Thus, our study provides a comprehensive investigation covering the synthesis and characterization of ferrites along with a good understanding of the phenomenon of how non-magnetic ion doping into spinel ferrites provides a method to tune the electronic and magnetic properties of the spinel ferrite.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to assess knowledge regarding disease, adherence to medication and blood pressure control among hypertensive patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 384 hypertensive patients attending a tertiary care, public sector hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan, was conducted. Data was collected by using Urdu versions of pre-validated hypertension knowledge questionnaire and Medication Adherence Scale by Morisky. Each patient's blood pressure was measured through a calibrated mercury sphygmomanometer. Data was analyzed statistically by using SPSS software version 21.0. Chi-square test was performed to determine association level among study variables. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to assess for statistically significant differences of demographic variables with systolic BP and diastolic BP. Multiple regression was used to predict the impact of two or more independent variables on dependent variable. P value of <.05 was considered to be significant. RESULTS: Mean (SD) systolic and diastolic blood pressures of 384 patients were 140.39 ± 15.485 and 88.74 ± 10.683 in mmHg respectively. The mean knowledge score was (13.26 ± 5.16 out of 22) and median score was 13. 103 (26.8%) of the patients had poor knowledge, whereas, 191 (49.7%) had moderate knowledge regarding hypertension with most of them at bottom line in the scale of moderate knowledge. The mean medication adherence score was (4.66 ± 2.743 out of 8), while 204 (53.1%) were categorized as poor adherent. CONCLUSION: The current study concluded that knowledge regarding hypertension, adherence to treatment and blood pressure control among hypertensive patients was found poor.

Several industrial wastes including biomass, fly ashes, red mud, mill scales, water treatment residues, have significant concentrations of metal oxides: Fe2O3, Al2O3, TiO2, SiO2 etc. Several efforts have been made towards recovering metals within these wastes. Rather than recovering one metal at a time, we report a novel approach for simultaneously extracting multiple metals from mixed oxides in a single process step. Using three distinct furnaces/heating regimes, the carbothermic reduction of Fe2O3/Al2O3/SiO2 system was investigated at 1450-1700 °C for up to 2 h over a wide composition range. Complete reduction was achieved for both Fe2O3 and SiO2 in all cases leading to the formation of Fe and Fe-Si alloys. The reduction of alumina at moderate temperatures was the key challenge. No alumina reduction was observed during reductions at 1450 °C. A partial reduction of alumina and the formation of Fe-Al alloys was detected in the Al2O3/Fe2O3/C system at 1550 °C. The formation of Fe-Si-Al alloys was also observed in the Fe2O3/SiO2/Al2O3/C system at 1550 °C. Complete reduction of alumina was observed at 1600-1700 °C, even for up to 50 wt% alumina in the system. Optimal operating conditions and reference standards were established for the simultaneous recovery of multiple metals from waste oxides. While conserving natural resources, this novel route will lower the burden on waste storage facilities with significant contributions to the economic and environmental sustainability of industrial waste management.

BACKGROUND: It is a well-established fact that hormonal changes significantly influence the consumer behaviors and their purchase intentions. However, attention to the conspicuous buying due to the mood swings, as a result of hormonal changes, during the pregnancy have been largely ignored in the literature. AIMS: The current research aims to examine the prospective association of conspicuous purchase intentions with hormonal changes and mood swings during the pregnancy. METHODS: An experimental procedure was used to assess the data collected from pregnant women (n = 116) and the hypotheses were analyzed using recall probability and recall position measures. RESULTS: The hormonal changes during the pregnancy were analyzed in three stages known as pregnancy trimesters suggested by the relevant literature (Trimester-1 = 39, Trimister-2 = 36 and Trimester-3 = 41). The respondents were exposed to visual attention of specifically designed images with a unique combination of the status and functional products. The ROC values for Trimester 2 is higher in all 4 graphs (0.923, 0.960, 0.892, and 0.923) respectively than Trimester 1 and 3. CONCLUSION: Findings revealed that the women purchase preferences shift as pregnancy move from one trimester to another. Women pay more attention to status products during the 2nd trimester as compared to 1st and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.

OBJECTIVES: Objective • Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important tool in the assessment of treatment outcomes. Healthcare professionals use the concept of HRQoL to measure factors other than illness which affect human health and its status. Patient's everyday activities are adversely affected by hypertension (HTN) and results in decreased self-confidence. The present study was aimed to assess blood pressure and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of hypertensive patients in Pakistan. METHODS: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was undertaken with 384 hypertensive patients attending a tertiary care public sector hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan. The assessment of HRQoL was done by using an EuroQol EQ-5D scale. Values derived from the UK general population survey were used to score HRQoL. The blood pressure of each patient was measured by using a calibrated sphygmomanometer. Data analysis was performed by using SPSS version 21 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). P ≤ .05 was taken as significant. RESULTS: Two hundred and fifteen (56%) patients were male with 3.31 ± 2.13 years of history of hypertension. The majority (n = 138, 35.9%) was categorized in the age group of 41 to 50 years with mean age of 50.21 ± 9.51. Mean (SD) systolic BP and mean (SD) diastolic BP was measured as 140.39 ± 15.485 and 88.74 ± 10.683 in mmHg respectively. Poor HRQoL was measured among the study participants (0.6456 ± 0.2317). Age, gender, education, occupation and monthly income had a significant relation with HRQoL score. CONCLUSION: Hypertension imposes an adverse effect on patient's HRQoL. Results from this study could be useful in clinical practice. Attention is required to highlight determinants of HRQoL and policies should be implemented for better management of HTN, particularly in early treatment phases where it is still possible to improve HRQoL.

RESUMO

Minimisation of radiation exposure with cardiac imaging reduces the potential of secondary side effects. Radiation exposure from myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) was compared. Overall doses were low with both modalities. Doses were lower in the CTCA group, but by only a small difference of 1.1 mSv. Radiation exposure should not be the primary consideration when choosing between these two modalities.

BACKGROUND: Nigella sativa is an important component of several traditional herbal preparations in various countries. It finds its applications in improving overall health and boosting immunity. The current study evaluated the role of fixed and essential oil of Nigella sativa against potassium bromate induced oxidative stress with special reference to modulation of glutathione redox enzymes and myeloperoxidase. METHODS: Animals; 30 rats (Sprague Dawley) were divided in three groups and oxidative stress was induced using mild dose of potassium bromate. The groups were on their respective diets (iso-caloric diets for a period of 56 days) i.e. control and two experimental diets containing N. sativa fixed (4%) and essential (0.3%) oils. The activities of enzymes involved in glutathione redox system and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were analyzed. RESULTS: The experimental diets modulated the activities of enzymes i.e. glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) positively. Indices of antioxidant status like tocopherols and glutathione were in linear relationship with that of GPx, GR and GST (P<0.01). MPO activities were in negative correlation with GST (P<0.01) but positive correlation with some other parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that both Nigella sativa fixed and essential oil are effective in improving the antioxidant indices against potassium bromate induced oxidative stress.

For estimation of grain yield in wheat, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is considered as a potential screening tool. Field experiments were conducted to scrutinize the response of NDVI to yield behavior of different wheat cultivars and nitrogen fertilization at agronomic research area, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) during the two years 2008-09 and 2009-10. For recording the value of NDVI, Green seeker (Handheld-505) was used. Split plot design was used as experimental model in, keeping four nitrogen rates (N1 = 0 kg ha(-1), N2 = 55 kg ha(-1), N3 = 110 kg ha(-1), and N4 = 220 kg ha(-1)) in main plots and ten wheat cultivars (Bakkhar-2001, Chakwal-50, Chakwal-97, Faisalabad-2008, GA-2002, Inqlab-91, Lasani-2008, Miraj-2008, Sahar-2006, and Shafaq-2006) in subplots with four replications. Impact of nitrogen and difference between cultivars were forecasted through NDVI. The results suggested that nitrogen treatment N4 (220 kg ha(-1)) and cultivar Faisalabad-2008 gave maximum NDVI value (0.85) at grain filling stage among all treatments. The correlation among NDVI at booting, grain filling, and maturity stages with grain yield was positive (R(2) = 0.90; R(2) = 0.90; R(2) = 0.95), respectively. So, booting, grain filling, and maturity can be good depictive stages during mid and later growth stages of wheat crop under agroclimatic conditions of Faisalabad and under similar other wheat growing environments in the country.

BACKGROUND: Student perceptions of specialties influence career choice decisions. It is important to expose undergraduates to the scope of rewarding careers in specialties like anesthesia by ensuring a good quality educational experience during anesthesia rotation. Our objective was to survey the curriculum structure and placement of the anesthesia undergraduate rotation in all the medical colleges of Pakistan recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A standardized survey questionnaire was distributed by direct contact, postal mail or e mail to one identified anesthetist in all recognized medical colleges with enrolment of 100 or more students. The response rate was 75%. We received responses by hand, email and postal mail. RESULTS: We received responses from 15 out of 20 anesthetists contacted. 11 reported undergraduate anesthesia rotation while 4 reported absence of this rotation in their undergraduate curriculum. The rotation placement, duration and curriculum showed a wide variation and lack of standardization. CONCLUSION: Our survey indicates that the inclusion of anesthesia rotation in undergraduate medical education is not mandatory and standardized. The rotation duration, placement and curriculum need to be standardized to enhance the quality of the experience and promote the scope of the specialty for rewarding careers.

The present study was designed to investigate the antioxidant potential and oil composition of Callistemon viminalis leaves. GC-MS analysis of the n-hexane extract revealed the presence of 40 compounds. Leaves contained appreciable levels of total phenolic contents (0.27-0.85 GAE mg/g) and total flavonoid contents (2.25-7.96 CE mg/g). DPPH radical scavenging IC50 and % inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation were found to be in the ranges of 28.4-56.2 µg/ml and 40.1-70.2%, respectively. The haemolytic effect of the plant leaves was found in the range of 1.79-4.95%. The antioxidant activity of extracts was also studied using sunflower oil as an oxidative substrate and found that it stabilized the oil. The correlation between the results of different antioxidant assays and oxidation parameters of oil indicated that leaves' methanolic extract, exhibiting higher TPC and TFC and scavenging power, was also more potent for enhancing the oxidative stability of sunflower oil.

Plants are rich in a variety of chemical compounds. Many are secondary metabolites including aromatic substances most of them are phenols or their oxygen substituted derivatives. Medicinal plants are rich in antioxidant constituents such as phenols, tocopherols, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and flavonoids etc. They are found to acquire free radical scavenging activity and used worldwide for the treatment of various immune system dependent diseases. Peltophorum pterocarpum (DC) Backer ex K. Heyne (Caesalpiniaceae) is a beautiful ornamental tree, widely grown in tropical regions and its parts are used in traditional medicine as medicinal agents. Fresh pods of Peltophorum pterocarpum was evaluated for its antioxidant potential by using various methods including DPPH, superoxide anion, nitric oxide scavenging, and metal chelating activity. TPC via Folin-Ciocalteau's reagent and anti haemolytic activity red blood cells respectively have also been measured. The methanol extract of pods of Peltophorum pterocarpum was found to possess the significant amount 439.21±0.17 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents) / g of TPC. The antioxidant potential of pods extract at mature stage showed potent activity and measured as, free radical scavenging activity 73.29±0.81%, superoxide anion scavenging activity 89.03±1.07%, nitric oxide scavenging activity 84.25±1.18%, and metal chelating activity 64.12±0.11%. The extract also showed potent anti haemolytic activity 79.09± 0.75%. Peltophorum pterocarpum exhibited strong but varying level of antioxidant and anti haemolytic activity in various methods along with total phenolic contents.

The development of new high throughput methods based on different materials with chemical modifications for protein profiling of complex mixtures leads towards biomarkers; used particularly for early diagnosis of a disease. In this work, diamond-like carbon (DLC) is developed and optimized for serum protein profiling by matrix-assisted laser/desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). This study is carried out in connection with a material-based approach, termed as material-enhanced laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry. DLC is selected as carrier surface which provides large surface to volume ratio and offers high sensitivity. DLC has a dual role of working as MALDI target while acting as an interface for protein profiling by specifically binding peptides and proteins out of serum samples. Serum constituents are bound through immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) functionality, created through glycidyl methacrylate polymerization under ultraviolet light followed by further derivatization with iminodiacetic acid and copper ion loading. Scanning electron microscopy highlights the morphological characteristics of DLC surface. It could be demonstrated that IMAC functionalized DLC coatings represent a powerful material in trapping biomolecules for their further analysis by MALDI-MS resulting in improved sensitivity, specificity and capacity in comparison to other protein-profiling methods.

Methanolic extracts of different parts of five medicinal plants, Ferula assafoetidaL. resin, Grewia asiaticaL. leaves, Ipomoea hederaceaJacq. seeds, Lepidium sativumL. seeds and Terminalia chebulaRetz. fruits were tested in vitrofor their cytotoxic, phytotoxic, insecticidal, nematicidal and anthelmintic activities. Ipomoea hederaceashowed very significant phytotoxic and cytotoxic activity, with 100% inhibition of Lemna minorgrowth and 100% death of Artemia salinaat concentrations of 1000 and 100 µg mL-1. Grewia asiaticaexhibited very weak activities while Lepidium sativumand Ferula assafoetidashowed moderate to good potential in all three bioassays. The results suggest screening of Ipomoea hederaceaseeds further for isolation of bioactive compounds that may be responsible for its toxic potential.

Insect chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are supposed to transport hydrophobic chemicals to receptors on sensory neurons. However, CSPs are broadly expressed in various insect tissues, suggesting their involvement in the physiological processes beyond chemoreception. So, the exact physiological roles of CSPs in insects still need to be unraveled. In this study, three full-length of CSP genes from Spodoptera exigua have been cloned and characterized. The deduced amino acid sequences of SexiCSP1, SexiCSP2 and SexiCSP3 revealed open reading frames of 128, 128 and 126 amino acids, respectively, with four conserved cysteine residues. The expression patterns of the three SexiCSPs were further investigated by real-time PCR. Three SexiCSPs were expressed in antennae, heads, legs, wings, thoraxes, abdomens, testes and ovaries, with the highest expression level in female and male antennae. Furthermore, all three SexiCSPs mRNA were distributed extensively in the tested development stages with the highest expression level in pupae. RNAi-based gene silencing study resulted in a dramatic reduction of corresponding mRNA in female S. exigua after injection with dsRNA of all three SexiCSPs. Consequentially, 42.5% of mortalities, 68.3% (compare to DEPC water injected control) and 71.4% (compare to uninjected control) oviposition inhibition, and significantly effected egg hatching were observed in the female S. exigua injected with dsSexiCSP3 as compared to control treatments. On the other hand, dsSexiCSP1 and dsSexiCSP2 injected female adults did not show effects on survival and reproduction. Our study confirms the utility of RNAi approach to functional characterization of CSP genes in S. exigua and provides a starting point for further studies on female survival and reproduction in this insect. It also reveals the potential pest controlling method, as insect behavior regulation agent that disrupts the expression of chemosensory proteins.

A study was conducted to identify constituents that might be responsible for analgesic and antiinflammatory conditions. Tasumatrol B, 1,13-diacetyl-10-deacetylbaccatin III (10-DAD) and 4-deacetylbaccatin III (4-DAB) were isolated from the bark extract of Taxus wallichiana Zucc. All the compounds were assessed for analgesic and antiinflammatory activities using an acetic acid-induced writhing model, a hot-plate test, a carrageenan-induced paw oedema model, a cotton-pellet oedema model and in vitro lipoxygenase inhibitory assay. All the compounds, especially tasumatrol B, revealed significant analgesic activity in comparison to a saline group based on an acetic acid-induced model. Similarly all of the test compounds, particularly tasumatrol B, showed significant antiinflammatory activity. However, all the compounds failed to exhibit any considerable activity in of the hot-plate test and the in vitro lipoxygenase inhibitory assay. This study has highlighted the potential of tasumatrol B to be further explored as a new lead compound for the management of pain and inflammation, one that has been discovered by scientific validation of the traditional medicinal use of T. wallichiana Zucc.

Inflammation is the natural body defense mechanism for the removal of injurious agents, necrosed cells and tissues from the body. This study was aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and platelet aggregation effects of three medicinal plants of Pakistan. Methanolic extract of garden pea inhibited arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation (IC50 = 35 microg/mL) and platelet activating factor (PAF)-induced platelet aggregation (IC50 = 38 microg/mL) in a dose dependent fashion. Methanolic extract of Desi chickpea inhibited arachidonic acid (AA) induced platelet aggregation (IC50 value = AA = 46 microg/mL) in dose dependent fashion while was found not active against PAF-induced platelet aggregation. Methanolic extract of Kabuli chickpea was found not active against both arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation and PAF-induced platelet aggregation. The best potential to inhibit in vitro COX-2 activity showed garden pea (Pisum sativum: the synthesis of PGE2 reduced by 92% in comparison with untreated control wells) followed by Desi chickpea (Cicer arietinum var; 87% inhibition) and Kabuli chickpea extracts (Cicer arietinum var: 65% inhibition). All extracts were tested at concentration 20 microg/mL. in COX-2 assay. The results indicate that if the same were happening in vito, Garden pea, Desi chickpea and Kabuli chickpea could be useful as natural antithrombotic anti-inflammatory materials.

The elemental composition, mineral phases, and crystalline structure of nephrite jade were investigated using calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). For compositional analysis, the laser-induced plasma was generated on the surface of nephrite jade. The plasma emissions were then acquired and analyzed, which revealed several elements in the sample, including Si, Mg, Ca, Li, Fe, Al, Na, K, and Ni. The plasma temperature was extracted from the Boltzmann plot before and after two-step self-absorption correction, and used in CF-LIBS calculations to get the elemental concentration. After self-absorption correction, the quantitative results obtained using CF-LIBS were found to be in close agreement with ICP-OES. The Raman spectrum of nephrite jade exhibits Si-O and M-OH stretching vibrations in the regions of 100 cm-1 to 1200 cm-1 and 3600 cm-1 to 3700 cm-1, respectively, whereas the XRD spectrum revealed the monoclinic crystalline phase of tremolite.

This case report puts an emphasis on retaining and re-fixing any avulsed bony segments in the maxillofacial region and maintaining the periosteal layer whenever possible, especially in young patients. Adequate bony fixation and watertight soft tissue closure are vital components for bone healing. The healing potential of facial bones is much higher as compared to the long bones, due to the superior blood supply.

Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease. While transplantation improves the quality of life and reduces the mortality risk for most patients when compared with maintenance dialysis, it introduces significant morbidity associated with induction and maintenance immune suppression. Sirolimus, a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, is frequently used as a second-line maintenance immunosuppressive agent in solid organ transplant recipients. Sirolimus may, however, have adverse vascular effects and has previously been shown to induce endothelial cell dysfunction and impaired nitric oxide production in vitro. Sirolimus-eluting coronary artery stents have been associated with rare reports of severe coronary artery vasospasm; however, systemic sirolimus therapy has not previously been associated with vasospastic complications.
