Background Resting-state functional MRI holds substantial potential for clinical application, but limitations exist in current understanding of how tumors exert local effects on resting-state functional MRI readings. Purpose To investigate the association between tumors, tumor characteristics, and changes in resting-state connectivity, to explore neurovascular uncoupling as a mechanism underlying these changes, and to evaluate seeding methodologies as a clinical tool. Materials and Methods Institutional review board approval was obtained for this HIPAA-compliant observational retrospective study of patients with glioma who underwent MRI and resting-state functional MRI between January 2016 and July 2017. Interhemispheric symmetry of connectivity was assessed in the hand motor region, incorporating tumor position, perfusion, grade, and connectivity generated from seed-based correlation. Statistical analysis was performed by using one-tailed t tests, Wilcoxon rank sum tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation, and Spearman rank correlation, with significance at P < .05. Results Data in a total of 45 patients with glioma (mean age, 51.3 years ± 14.3 [standard deviation]) were compared with those in 10 healthy control subjects (mean age, 50.3 years ± 17.2). Patients showed loss of symmetry in measures of hand motor resting-state connectivity compared with control subjects (P < .05). Tumor distance from the ipsilateral hand motor (IHM) region correlated with the degree (R = 0.38, P = .01) and strength (R = 0.33, P = .03) of resting-state connectivity. In patients with World Health Organization grade IV glioblastomas 40 mm or less from the IHM region, loss of symmetry in strength of resting-state connectivity was correlated with tumor perfusion (R = 0.74, P < .01). In patients with gliomas 40 mm or less from the IHM region, seeding the nontumor hemisphere yielded less asymmetric hand motor resting-state connectivity than seeding the tumor hemisphere (connectivity seeded:contralateral = 1.34 nontumor vs 1.38 tumor hemisphere seeded; P = .03, false discovery rate threshold = 0.01). Conclusion Hand motor resting-state connectivity was less symmetrical in a tumor distance-dependent manner in patients with glioma. Differences in resting-state connectivity may be false-negative results driven by a neurovascular uncoupling mechanism. Seeding from the nontumor hemisphere may attenuate asymmetry in patients with tumors near ipsilateral hand motor cortices. © RSNA, 2020 Online supplemental material is available for this article.

PURPOSE: Prediction of clinical outcomes in patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is important for optimization of treatment planning. Quantitative imaging biomarkers for PCNSL have not yet been established. This study evaluated the prognostic value of pretreatment dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging for progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with PCNSL. METHODS: Pretreatment dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging were retrospectively analyzed in 18 immunocompetent patients with PCNSL. Volumes of interest encompassing the tumors were assessed for measurements of blood plasma volume (Vp), volume transfer constant (Ktrans), and apparent diffusion coefficient. Patients were divided into short and long PFS groups based on median PFS. Imaging and clinical variables were correlated with PFS. RESULTS: Median PFS was 19.6 months. Lower Vpmean and Ktransmean values increased risk for rapid progression (< 19.6 months). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis demonstrated an optimal Vpmean cutoff value of 2.29 (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.74, sensitivity and specificity = 0.78, p = 0.023) for separating patients with short and long PFS. The optimal Ktransmean cutoff was 0.08 (AUC = 0.74, sensitivity = 0.67, specificity = 0.78, p = 0.025). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with log-rank test demonstrated significantly (p = 0.015) increased risk of rapid progression for patients with Vpmean < 2.29. Vpmean was significantly (p = 0.03) associated with PFS on univariate Cox analysis. Apparent diffusion coefficient values and clinical factors did not influence PFS. CONCLUSIONS: Pretreatment Vp and Ktrans derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI may be novel prognostic quantitative imaging biomarkers of progression-free survival in patients with PCNSL. These data should be prospectively validated in larger patient cohorts.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Major anterior circulation ischemic strokes caused by occlusion of the distal internal carotid artery or proximal middle cerebral artery or both account for about one third of ischemic strokes with mostly poor outcomes. These strokes are treatable by intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator and endovascular methods. However, dynamics of infarct growth in these strokes are poorly documented. The purpose was to help understand infarct growth dynamics by measuring acute infarct size with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) at known times after stroke onset in patients with documented internal carotid artery/middle cerebral artery occlusions. METHODS: Retrospectively, we included 47 consecutive patients with documented internal carotid artery/middle cerebral artery occlusions who underwent DWI within 30 hours of stroke onset. Prospectively, 139 patients were identified using the same inclusion criteria. DWI lesion volumes were measured and correlated to time since stroke onset. Perfusion data were reviewed in those who underwent perfusion imaging. RESULTS: Acute infarct volumes ranged from 0.41 to 318.3 mL. Infarct size and time did not correlate (R2=0.001). The majority of patients had DWI lesions that were <25% the territory at risk (<70 mL) whether they were imaged <8 or >8 hours after stroke onset. DWI lesions corresponded to areas of greatly reduced perfusion. CONCLUSIONS: Poor correlation between infarct volume and time after stroke onset suggests that there are factors more powerful than time in determining infarct size within the first 30 hours. The observations suggest that highly variable cerebral perfusion via the collateral circulation may primarily determine infarct growth dynamics. If verified, clinical implications include the possibility of treating many patients outside traditional time windows.

PURPOSE: To characterize the MRI features of the petromastoid canal in children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and in normal infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High resolution MRI examinations of 564 children who were evaluated for SNHL and brain MRI examinations of 112 infants who had normal studies were studied independently by two reviewers. RESULTS: In SNHL group, visibility of the PMC decreased for right and left PMC (P < 0.001). The width of the right PMC significantly decreased as age increased (P < 0.0001). There was no relation between abnormalities of membranous labyrinth and cochlear nerve and PMC visibility in children with SNHL (p > 0.05). In the normal group, the PMC visibility decreased with increasing age (right P = 0.0001, left P = 0.001). In the normal group also, as age increased, the PMC width decreased for both PMCs (right, P = 0.0006; left, P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: The PMC is more frequently visualized in young children. Its visibility and width are not associated with abnormalities of membranous labyrinth and cochlear nerves.

STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective, cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to identify the diagnostic yield of spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting malignant pathology in cancer patients with back pain. We also sought to evaluate the role of MRI extent ( i.e. regional vs. total) in identifying malignant pathology. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: No prior study has systematically investigated the yield of spine MRI in a large cohort of cancer patients. METHODS: Spine MRI reports from 2017 to 2021 for back pain (acute and nonspecified chronicity) in cancer patients were reviewed to identify clinically relevant findings: malignant (1) epidural, (2) leptomeningeal, (3) intramedullary, (4) osseous disease, and (5) fracture. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between MRI extent and the presence of cancer-related findings. For patients with multiple MRIs, short-interval scans (≤4 mo) were evaluated to assess the yield of repeat imaging. RESULTS: At least one cancer-related finding was identified on 52% of 5989 spine MRIs ordered for back pain and 57% of 1130 spine MRIs ordered specifically for acute back pain. The most common pathology was malignant osseous disease (2545; 43%). Across all five categories, most findings (77%-89%) were new/progressive. Odds of identifying a finding were significantly higher with total versus regional spine MRIs ( P <0.001). Although only 14 patients had a positive regional MRI followed shortly by a positive total spine MRI, most of these repeat total spine MRIs (78%) identified findings outside the scope of the initial regional scan. Twenty-one patients had both computed tomography and MRI within 30 days of each other; eight (38%) had compression fractures appreciated on MRI but not on computed tomography. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest imaging the total spine in cancer patients with back pain given higher odds of identifying malignant pathology and instances of capturing otherwise not visualized disease. Further work is warranted to confirm these findings.

Background Many patients with hematological malignancies treated with stem cell transplantation (SCT) experience cognitive dysfunction. However, few studies have investigated treatment-related neurotoxicity in older adults with multiple myeloma (MM) treated with high dose chemotherapy (HDC) and autologous SCT (HDC/ASCT). In this study, we examined gray matter (GM) volume, resting state functional connectivity (RSFC), neurocognitive function (NF), and proinflammatory cytokines (PCy) in older patients with MM pre- and post-HDC/ASCT. Methods Eighteen MM patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging, neurocognitive tests, and serum PCy measurement prior to HDC/ASCT, and fifteen patients completed follow ups an average of five months post-HDC/ASCT. Results There were significant decreases in RSFC from pre- to post-HDC/ASCT in (1) the central executive network (CEN) involving the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right posterior parietal cortex (p = 0.022), and (2) the CEN involving the right posterior parietal cortex and the salience network involving the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (p = 0.029); these comparisons were no longer significant after multiple comparisons correction. There were no significant changes in GM volumes or NF, except for improvement in attention (Digit Span Backward, p = 0.03). There were significant increases in several PCy post-HDC/ASCT (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions This pilot study showed decreased RSFC involving the left frontal, right posterior parietal and right anterior cingulate cortices in MM patients post-HDC/ASCT, relatively stable NF, and increases in PCy. These findings are congruent with studies in patients with hematological malignancies and other cancers and provide supporting evidence for the vulnerability of frontoparietal regions to chemotherapy adverse effects.

Strong foundational knowledge of the anatomy of the cerebral cortex, lobes, and cerebellum is key to guide the search for potential lesions based on clinical presentation and known focal neurologic deficits. This article provides an introduction and overview of cerebral cortical anatomy, including the key sulci that divide the 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex, as well as the major gyral and sulcal landmarks within each lobe. The organization of the cerebellum and its major anatomic constituents are also described. Commonly encountered anatomic variants and asymmetries in cerebral cortical anatomy are presented and discussed.

Human brain function is an increasingly complex framework that has important implications in clinical medicine. In this review, the anatomy of the most commonly assessed brain functions in clinical neuroradiology, including motor, language, and vision, is discussed. The anatomy and function of the primary and secondary sensorimotor areas are discussed with clinical case examples. Next, the dual stream of language processing is reviewed, as well as its implications in clinical medicine and surgical planning. Last, the authors discuss the striate and extrastriate visual cortex and review the dual stream model of visual processing.

Many patients treated with chemotherapy for non-central nervous system (CNS) cancers experience cognitive dysfunction. However, few studies have investigated treatment-related neurotoxicity in women with ovarian cancer. The goal of this study was to assess regional brain function in patients with ovarian cancer after first-line chemotherapy. Seventeen patients with ovarian cancer and seventeen healthy controls matched for gender, age and education participated in the study. The patients were evaluated 1-4 months after completion of first line taxane/platinum chemotherapy. All participants underwent resting state functional MRI (rsfMRI) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) indices were calculated. The results showed that patients had significantly decreased average ReHo values in the left middle frontal gyrus, medial prefrontal cortex, and right superior parietal lobule, compared to healthy controls. This is the first rsfMRI study showing ReHo alterations in frontal and parietal regions in patients with ovarian cancer treated with first-line chemotherapy. The findings are overall congruent with prior studies in non-CNS cancer populations and provide supporting evidence for the prevailing notion that frontal areas are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of chemotherapy.

RESUMO

Research in ultrahigh magnetic field strength combined with ultrahigh and ultrafast gradient technology has provided enormous gains in sensitivity, resolution, and contrast for neuroimaging. This article provides an overview of the technical advantages and challenges of performing clinical neuroimaging studies at ultrahigh magnetic field strength combined with ultrahigh and ultrafast gradient technology. Emerging clinical applications of 7-T MRI and state-of-the-art gradient systems equipped with up to 300 mT/m gradient strength are reviewed, and the impact and benefits of such advances to anatomical, structural and functional MRI are discussed in a variety of neurological conditions. Finally, an outlook and future directions for ultrahigh field MRI combined with ultrahigh and ultrafast gradient technology in neuroimaging are examined.

SARS-CoV-2 infection induces a wide spectrum of neurologic dysfunction that emerges weeks after the acute respiratory infection. To better understand this pathology, we prospectively analyzed of a cohort of cancer patients with neurologic manifestations of COVID-19, including a targeted proteomics analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid. We find that cancer patients with neurologic sequelae of COVID-19 harbor leptomeningeal inflammatory cytokines in the absence of viral neuroinvasion. The majority of these inflammatory mediators are driven by type II interferon and are known to induce neuronal injury in other disease states. In these patients, levels of matrix metalloproteinase-10 within the spinal fluid correlate with the degree of neurologic dysfunction. Furthermore, this neuroinflammatory process persists weeks after convalescence from acute respiratory infection. These prolonged neurologic sequelae following systemic cytokine release syndrome lead to long-term neurocognitive dysfunction. Our findings suggest a role for anti-inflammatory treatment(s) in the management of neurologic complications of COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the ability of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to predict long-term response of brain metastases prior to and within 72 hours of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). METHODS: In this prospective pilot study, multiple b-value DWI and T1-weighted DCE-MRI were performed in patients with brain metastases before and within 72 hours following SRS. Diffusion-weighted images were analyzed using the monoexponential and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) models. DCE-MRI data were analyzed using the extended Tofts pharmacokinetic model. The parameters obtained with these methods were correlated with brain metastasis outcomes according to modified Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology Brain Metastases criteria. RESULTS: We included 25 lesions from 16 patients; 16 patients underwent pre-SRS MRI and 12 of 16 patients underwent both pre- and early (within 72 hours) post-SRS MRI. The perfusion fraction (f) derived from IVIM early post-SRS was higher in lesions demonstrating progressive disease than in lesions demonstrating stable disease, partial response, or complete response (q = .041). Pre-SRS extracellular extravascular volume fraction, ve , and volume transfer coefficient, Ktrans , derived from DCE-MRI were higher in nonresponders versus responders (q = .041). CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative DWI and DCE-MRI are feasible imaging methods in the pre- and early (within 72 hours) post-SRS evaluation of brain metastases. DWI- and DCE-MRI-derived parameters demonstrated physiologic changes (tumor cellularity and vascularity) and offer potentially useful biomarkers that can predict treatment response. This allows for initiation of alternate therapies within an effective time window that may help prevent disease progression.

PURPOSE: Extant literature is mixed regarding risk of metabolic acidosis after enteroplasty for myelomeningocele. This study is the first known attempt to describe the pattern of developing metabolic acidosis in a group of children who underwent enteroplasty and served as their own controls. Multiple preoperative and postoperative laboratory measures for each child were obtained for comparison. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study allowed participants to serve as their own controls for pre-intervention and post-intervention analysis. The setting was a tertiary, university affiliated, interdisciplinary spina bifida program. All patients followed in the spina bifida program who had undergone ileal or colonic enteroplasty were included for review (total 113). Strict exclusion criteria were preoperatively diagnosed renal insufficiency, preexisting metabolic acidosis consistent with renal tubular acidosis (pH less than 7.35, bicarbonate 20 mmol/l or less) and history of augmentation using gastric or ureteral tissue. Final analysis included 71 children who met inclusion criteria. Children in our spina bifida program periodically undergo routine laboratory evaluation of electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, blood count, and venous blood gases including pH, bicarbonate and partial pressure of carbon dioxide. Primary outcome measures were comparative shifts in blood gases and electrolytes that would confirm the new onset of metabolic acidosis after enteroplasty. Changes in electrolytes and serum creatinine were secondary outcome measures to identify potential markers for postoperative effects. With each child as his/her own control, analysis included paired t tests. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences (p <0.05) were found when comparing laboratory values before and after bladder augmentation, including pH, bicarbonate, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and electrolytes. No child had metabolic acidosis based on the aforementioned criteria. Followup ranged from 1 to 138 months after enteroplasty (mean 46.8). Respiratory compensation was considered in the analysis, and no difference in partial pressure of carbon dioxide following surgery was noted (p = 0.65). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge no previous study has examined the matched paired results of before and after development of metabolic acidosis among children (serving as their own controls) with myelomeningocele undergoing ileal or colonic enteroplasty. The negative statistical results in this controlled cohort are clinically significant. If a child with myelomeningocele has metabolic acidosis after enteroplasty, other clinical reasons beyond the effects of surgery warrant careful consideration.

RESUMO

Resting state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (rsfcMRI) has become a key component of investigations of neurocognitive and psychiatric behaviors. Over the past two decades, several methods and paradigms have been adopted to utilize and interpret data from resting-state fluctuations in the brain. These findings have increased our understanding of changes in many disease states. As the amount of resting state data available for research increases with big datasets and data-sharing projects, it is important to review the established traditional analysis methods and recognize areas where research methodology can be adapted to better accommodate the scale and complexity of rsfcMRI analysis. In this paper, we review established methods of analysis as well as areas that have been receiving increasing attention such as dynamic rsfcMRI, independent vector analysis, multiband rsfcMRI and network of networks.

RESUMO

SARS-CoV-2 infection induces a wide spectrum of neurologic dysfunction. Here we show that a particularly vulnerable population with neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 harbor an influx of inflammatory cytokines within the cerebrospinal fluid in the absence of viral neuro-invasion. The majority of these inflammatory mediators are driven by type 2 interferon and are known to induce neuronal injury in other disease models. Levels of matrix metalloproteinase-10 within the spinal fluid correlate with the degree of neurologic dysfunction. Furthermore, this neuroinflammatory process persists weeks following convalescence from the acute respiratory infection. These prolonged neurologic sequelae following a systemic cytokine release syndrome lead to long-term neurocognitive dysfunction with a wide range of phenotypes.

Background: Early imaging-based treatment response assessment of brain metastases following stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) remains challenging. The aim of this study is to determine whether early (within 12 weeks) intratumoral changes in interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) and velocity (IFV) estimated from computational fluid modeling (CFM) using dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI can predict long-term outcomes of lung cancer brain metastases (LCBMs) treated with SRS. Methods: Pre- and post-treatment T1-weighted DCE-MRI data were obtained in 41 patients treated with SRS for intact LCBMs. The imaging response was assessed using RANO-BM criteria. For each lesion, extravasation of contrast agent measured from Extended Tofts pharmacokinetic Model (volume transfer constant, Ktrans) was incorporated into a computational fluid model to estimate tumor IFP and IFV. Estimates of mean IFP and IFV and heterogeneity (skewness and kurtosis) were calculated for each lesion from pre- and post-SRS imaging. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was utilized to assess for significant differences in IFP, IFV, and IFP/IFV change (Δ) between response groups. Results: Fifty-three lesions from 41 patients were included. Median follow-up time after SRS was 11 months. The objective response (OR) rate (partial or complete response) was 79%, with 21% demonstrating stable disease (SD) or progressive disease (PD). There were significant response group differences for multiple posttreatment and Δ CFM parameters: post-SRS IFP skewness (mean -0.405 vs. -0.691, p = 0.022), IFP kurtosis (mean 2.88 vs. 3.51, p = 0.024), and IFV mean (5.75e-09 vs. 4.19e-09 m/s, p = 0.027); and Δ IFP kurtosis (mean -2.26 vs. -0.0156, p = 0.017) and IFV mean (1.91e-09 vs. 2.38e-10 m/s, p = 0.013). Posttreatment and Δ thresholds predicted non-OR with high sensitivity (sens): post-SRS IFP skewness (-0.432, sens 84%), kurtosis (2.89, sens 84%), and IFV mean (4.93e-09 m/s, sens 79%); and Δ IFP kurtosis (-0.469, sens 74%) and IFV mean (9.90e-10 m/s, sens 74%). Conclusions: Objective response was associated with lower post-treatment tumor heterogeneity, as represented by reductions in IFP skewness and kurtosis. These results suggest that early post-treatment assessment of IFP and IFV can be used to predict long-term response of lung cancer brain metastases to SRS, allowing a timelier treatment modification.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there are detectable differences in tensor metrics between children who read normally and children with simple developmental dyslexia and/or differences between the right and left hemispheres in these groups by using 3.0-T diffusion-tensor (DT) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging focused on the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), inferior fronto-occipital and inferior longitudinal fasciculi (IFO-ILF), and posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, HIPAA-compliant institutional review board-approved investigation with written informed parental consent. Nineteen English-speaking, right-handed children with a normal IQ and developmental dyslexia (16 male, three female; age range, 6-16 years; mean age, 9.9 years) and 18 normal-reading, age-matched pediatric control subjects (13 male, five female; age range, 6-15 years; mean age, 10.0 years) underwent DT imaging (30 directions, three signals acquired, voxel size of 2 mm). Regions of interest were placed on the SLF, IFO-ILF, and PLIC, and tensor metrics were calculated. Statistical analyses of differences in cognitive function between the dyslexic and control groups were performed by using the two-sample t test. Differences in tensor metrics were examined by using analysis of covariance models. RESULTS: In the control subjects, the fractional anisotropy (FA) of all tracts studied increased with age. In the dyslexic subjects, the age-related increases in FA in the SLF were most similar to those in the control subjects (P = .504), while mean FA values for the IFO-ILF (P = .009) and PLIC (P < .0001) were higher than those in the control subjects up to around 11 years of age, after which they were lower. Apparent diffusion coefficients consistently decreased in both groups. There was a nonsignificant increase in mean axial diffusivity in the IFO-ILF in the control group but not in the dyslexia group. Increases in axial diffusivity seen in the PLIC in the control group were not seen in the dyslexia group. There were no marked differences in tensor metrics between the left and right hemispheres within or between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Findings at 3.0-T DT imaging suggest that white matter differences in dyslexic children are not limited to the portion of the brain traditionally considered to be integral to word recognition and processing.

With strides in stem cell biology, cell engineering and molecular therapy, the transplantation of cells to produce therapeutic molecules endogenously is an attractive and achievable alternative to the use of exogenous drugs. The encapsulation of such cell transplants in semi-permeable, nanoporous constructs is often required to protect them from immune attack and to prevent their proliferation in the host. However, effective graft immunoisolation has been mostly elusive owing to the absence of a high-throughput method to create precisely controlled, high-aspect-ratio nanopores. To address the clinical need for effective cell encapsulation and immunoisolation, we devised a biocompatible cell-encapsulating microcontainer and a method to create highly anisotropic nanopores in the microcontainer's surface. To evaluate the efficacy of these nanopores in oxygenating the encapsulated cells, we engineered 9L rat glioma cells to bioluminesce under hypoxic conditions. The methods described above should aid in evaluating the long term survival and efficacy of cellular grafts.

The primary hand motor region is classically believed to be in the "hand knob" area in the precentral gyrus (PCG). However, hand motor task-based activation is often localized outside this area. The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural and functional connectivity driven by different seed locations corresponding to the little, index, and thumb in the PCG using probabilistic diffusion tractography (PDT) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rfMRI). Twelve healthy subjects had three regions of interest (ROIs) placed in the left PCG: lateral to the hand knob (thumb area), within the hand knob (index finger area), and medial to the hand knob (little finger area). Connectivity maps were generated using PDT and rfMRI. Individual and group level analyses were performed. Results show that the greatest hand motor connectivity between both hemispheres was obtained using the ROI positioned just lateral to the hand knob in the PCG (the thumb area). The number of connected voxels in the PCG between the two hemispheres was greatest in the lateral-most ROI (the thumb area): 279 compared with 13 for the medial-most ROI and 9 for the central hand knob ROI. Similarly, the highest white matter connectivity between the two hemispheres resulted from the ROI placed in the lateral portion of PCG (p < 0.003). The maximal functional and structural connectivity of the hand motor area between hemispheres occurs in the thumb area, located laterally at the "hand knob." Thus, this location appears maximal for rfMRI and PDT seeding of the motor area.
