RESUMO

The present article revises the major topics related to fish and coral reproduction. In particular after a short review of the ornamental trade and the destructive fishing methods that are still used in some areas, the present review revises the principal modes of fish and coral reproduction introducing the main critical bottlenecks in their captive propagation. Regarding fish these include sexing the fish, pair forming, the embryo development, the hatching process and of course the transition from an endogenous to an exogenous feeding by the larvae. As concerns corals, great attention is given to the main modes of reproduction as well as to nutrition and lightening.

RESUMO

Control over the properties of ultrathin films plays a crucial role in many fields of science and technology. Although nondestructive optical and electrical methods have multiple advantages for local surface characterization, their applicability is very limited if the surface is in contact with an electrolyte solution. Local electrochemical methods, e.g., scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), cannot be used as a robust alternative yet because their methodological aspects are not sufficiently developed with respect to these systems. The recently proposed scanning electrochemical impedance microscopy (SEIM) can efficiently elucidate many key properties of the solid/liquid interface such as charge transfer resistance or interfacial capacitance. However, many fundamental aspects related to SEIM application still remain unclear. In this work, a methodology for the interpretation of SEIM data of "charge blocking systems" has been elaborated with the help of finite element simulations in combination with experimental results. As a proof of concept, the local film thickness has been visualized using model systems at various tip-to-sample separations. Namely, anodized aluminum oxide (Al2O3, 2-20 nm) and self-assembled monolayers based on 11-mercapto-1-undecanol and 16-mercapto-1-hexadecanethiol (2.1 and 2.9 nm, respectively) were used as model systems.

RESUMO

We explore a framework to model the dose response of allosteric multisite phosphorylation proteins using a single auxiliary variable. This reduction can closely replicate the steady state behavior of detailed multisite systems such as the Monod-Wyman-Changeux allosteric model or rule-based models. Optimal ultrasensitivity is obtained when the activation of an allosteric protein by its individual sites is concerted and redundant. The reduction makes this framework useful for modeling and analyzing biochemical systems in practical applications, where several multisite proteins may interact simultaneously. As an application we analyze a newly discovered checkpoint signaling pathway in budding yeast, which has been proposed to measure cell growth by monitoring signals generated at sites of plasma membrane growth. We show that the known components of this pathway can form a robust hysteretic switch. In particular, this system incorporates a signal proportional to bud growth or size, a mechanism to read the signal, and an all-or-none response triggered only when the signal reaches a threshold indicating that sufficient growth has occurred.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although some research has been done in the Mexican manufacturing industry regarding mental workload, none has explored its association with physical fatigue, body weight gain, and human error simultaneously. OBJECTIVE: This research examines the association between mental workload and physical fatigue, body weight gain, and human error in employees from the Mexican manufacturing systems through a mediation analysis approach. METHODS: A survey named Mental Workload Questionnaire was developed by merging the NASA-TLX with a questionnaire containing the mental workload variables mentioned above. The Mental Workload Questionnaire was applied to 167 participants in 63 manufacturing companies. In addition, the mental workload was used as an independent variable, while physical fatigue and body weight gain were mediator variables, and human error was a dependent variable. Six hypotheses were used to measure the relationships among variables and tested using the ordinary least squares regression algorithm. RESULTS: Findings indicated that mental workload significantly correlates with physical fatigue and human error. Also, the mental workload had a significant total association with human error. The highest direct association with body weight gain was provided by physical fatigue, and body weight gain had an insignificant direct association with human error. Finally, all indirect associations were insignificant. CONCLUSION: Mental workload directly affects human error, which physical fatigue does not; however, it does affect body weight gain. Managers should reduce their employees' mental workload and physical fatigue to avoid further problems associated with their health.

RESUMO

In this work, we present a globally Mittag-Leffler bounded high-gain observer for fractional order nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics and additive measurement noise at the output. Our proposal starts from an alternative representation of the fractional order system, whose output does not depend on the additive measurement noise and in which the original system's output is treated as an additional state variable. This representation allows us two things: 1) to simultaneously estimate the state variables and the uncertain term and 2) to incorporate into the design scheme a fractional integral-type contribution, which is useful to give robustness against the measurement noise and the unmodeled dynamics, as well as to attenuate the noise amplification, typical of any high-gain observer. Through the corresponding mathematical analysis, we prove that the estimation error of the proposed observer is uniformly bounded and converges asymptotically to a globally Mittag-Leffler compact attractive set, this is, the proposed observer is globally Mittag-Leffler bounded. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions, such as an integer derivation order or the absence of measurement noise, the proposed observer exhibits some particular properties. Finally, we consider a continuously stirred biochemical reactor to exemplify our design methodology. The numerical results confirm that the observer is able to accurately estimate the state variables as well as the uncertainty term of the fractional model. In other words, the globally Mittag-Leffler bounded high-gain observer is robust against measurement noise and uncertainties.

RESUMO

Interlaboratory exercises are a good tool to compare the response of different systems to the same quantity and to identify possible inconsistencies between them. One of the main goals of the EMPIR 19ENV01 traceRadon project is to harmonize radon flux measurements based on different systems and methodologies. In the framework of the traceRadon Project, two radon flux intercomparison campaigns were carried out in October 2021 at high and at low radon source areas. Four institutions participated in the field intercomparison exercises with their own systems. Every system was based on a specific radon monitor (diffusion or pump mode) and an accumulation chamber (with manual or automatic opening). Radon fluxes were calculated by each participant using both exponential and linear fittings of the radon activity concentration measured over time within the accumulation chambers. The results of this study show mainly: (i) the exponential approach is not advisable due to the variability of the radon flux and the leakage of the systems during long-time measurements; (ii) the linear approach should be applied to minimize the measurement period in agreement with the time response and sensitivity of the monitors; (iii) radon flux measured at high radon source areas (radium content of about 800 Bq kg-1) risks being underestimated because of the influence of advective effects; (iv) radon flux measured at low radon source areas (radium content of about 30 Bq kg-1) may present large uncertainties if sensitive radon monitors with pump mode are not used.

RESUMO

An international comparison of continuous monitors measuring radon activity concentration was performed to validate the traceability of the European radon calibration facilities. It was carried out by comparing the secondary standards used by these previous facilities, ranging from 100 Bq·m-3 to 300 Bq·m-3. Secondary standards were individually compared to a secondary reference device previously calibrated in a reference radon atmosphere traceable to a primary standard. The intercomparison was organized by the National Institute for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Protection (SUJCHBO) in the period from October 2019 to April 2020 within the European Metrology Program for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), JRP-Contract 16ENV10 MetroRADON. Eight European laboratories participated in this study. The results of the experiment are presented and discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated that Letrozole (aromatase inhibitor) and tamoxifen (selective modulator of estrogen receptors) are effective in the treatment of postmenopausal women with locally advanced tumors, stage III and hormone dependent. OBJECTIVE: To present display the complete clinical answer incidence and the complete pathological answer with the use of induction hormonotherapy. METHODS: Put-analysis in 40 patients with breast cancer, to chanalicular infiltrated, eligible were treated in a prospective study, to double blind person, using per os: letrozol, 2.5 mg; tamoxifen, 20 mg, known widely like selective modulator of estrogen receivers; oral route, during 36 consecutive months. Reports at the beginning were taken, subsequent to 3, 6 and 12 months to evaluate the frequency of complete respond. The patients, who did not show answer neoadjuvant therapy, were put under treatment with radiotherapy. The patients who showed good partial pathological respond, or clinical partial respond, went candidates to radical mastectomy. According to the protocol of the study, the patients subsequent to surgery who showed partial pathological respond or complete pathological respond, continued adjuvant handling adyuvant therapy by 2 years consecutive or until the presence of progression of the disease. It was used like statistical method Chi2, with p of Table cloth to evaluate the differences. RESULTS: During a period of 3 years, january of the 2003 to january of the 2005, 2 groups of patients, 40 studied altogether; the age average was of 65,5 years, with a rank of 55 to 75 years with breast cancer, stages: IIA to IIIB. Without complete respond 25% of the group with tamoxifen; 20% with letrozol Those patients happened to radiotherapy. The collateral effects of the use of hormonotherapy with letrozol appeared in a 55% and with the use of tamoxifen in a 60% of the patients with breast cancer (p = 0.5). They did not respond to neoadyuvant therapy (hormonal receptors < to 30%): with letrozol 19% of them and 25% with tamoxifen; reason why they received treatment with radiotherapy. All patients candidates to surgery, were benefitted with the mastectomy handling. CONCLUSIONS: Results although preliminary, suggest that neoadyuvant treatment with hormone-therapy in postmenopausal patients with breast cancer, have good prognosis. Induction therapy, were better tolerated, with greater effectiveness and improved the clinical and objective respond in women with breast cancer in the postmenopausal. Work serves as tool to determine the indication to us of induction hormonotherapy; and identify to those patients with breast cancer, locally advanced in post menopause with better prognosis to be rescued with radical mastectomy. Study needs more background and show the impact of letrozol, as hormonotherapy used in neoadjuvancy, to confirm if relieves period without disease or survives, before mastectomy. In a near future, it shall important to investigate if is useful the radical mastectomy in those postmenopausal patients with complete objective respond, after the use of an aromatase inhibitor.

RESUMO

The arrenoblastome is an ovary tumor with masculine hormone production, testosterone and other hormones. Other names are: stromatic tumor or gonadal stromatic tumor, also steroid cell tumor. They are rare tumors; represent 0.5% of all ovary tumors. It could be present in all age women groups, more frequently in young people. Most of times unilateral (95%), solids or quistic-solids. Anaplastic grade give them a malignity disease in 5 to 10 % cases. We report the case of a 35 year-old woman with clinical appearance of androgenism for ovary tumor, she was accepted for surgery, founded 7 liters of ascitis, produced for an ovary tumor, integral capsule, it produced masculine hormones. Histological study reported ovarian sex cord tumor, high grade, 30 cm size, integral capsule, all normally. Stage IC. Size and differential cellular grade need systemic chemotherapy. At the time of this report her tumoral marks are normal, and she has gradual diminution of virilizing characters produced for ovary tumor. Prognosis of the disease depends the grade of cell differentiation and stage in surgical-pathological events. Survival to five years stage I is approximate in 70 to 90% of the cases. Angular stone treatment is surgery. Disseminate cases, chemotherapy or radiotherapy most be considerate. Usually arrenoblastome has poor possibilities of dissemination and considering the early detection the histological grade of healthy is very high.

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may induce several vascular endothelial-dependent systemic complications, and sulodexide has pleiotropic actions on the vascular endothelium, which may prove beneficial. We aimed to assess the effect of sulodexide when used within 3 days of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) clinical onset. We conducted a randomized placebo-controlled outpatient trial. To be included, patients must have been at high risk for severe clinical progression. Participants received sulodexide (oral 1,000 LRU/d) or placebo for 21 days. The primary endpoint was the need for hospital care. Also assessed were patients' need for supplemental oxygen as well as D-dimer and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, thromboembolic events, major bleeding, and mortality. A total of 243 patients were included in the per-protocol analysis from June 5 to August 30, 2020. Of these, 124 received sulodexide and 119 received a placebo. Only 17.7% of the patients in the sulodexide group required hospitalization, compared with 29.4% in the placebo group (p = 0.03). This benefit persisted in the intention-to-treat analysis (15% in sulodexide group vs. 24% with placebo [p = 0.04]). With sulodexide, fewer patients required supplemental oxygen (30 vs. 42% [p = 0.05]). After 2 weeks, fewer patients had D-dimer levels >500 ng/dL (22 vs. 47% [p < 0.01]), and patients also had lower mean CRP levels (12.5 vs. 17.8 mg/dL [p < 0.01]). There were no between-group differences in thromboembolic events, major bleeding, or mortality. Treatment of COVID-19 patients with sulodexide, when provided within 3 days of clinical onset, improved their clinical outcomes. Although the results should be confirmed, sulodexide could be valuable in an outpatient setting.

RESUMO

Vinasse wastewater from tequila industry that has been conventionally treated is usually characterized by a chemical oxygen demand (COD) above 150 mg L-1, which is the maximum content permitted for discharge by Mexican Regulation. In order to increase the wastewater quality, different processes were applied, and from the experimental results, the advantages and limitations were analyzed. In this way, although Fenton experiments showed acceptable COD removal efficiencies (79-90%), operation as well as cost limit its adoption as a viable technology. Therefore, additional experiments explored electro-Fenton (EF) as well as adsorption coupled to EF in a tubular reactor. The corresponding data revealed that there was no additional increase in COD removal performance probably due to the low oxygen solubility in the electrolytic solution and the high pH that prevents the existence of Fe2+ ions necessary for the Fenton mixture. In view of these results, when an activated carbon (AC) filter was coupled to polarization at current densities between 0.5 and 2 mA cm-2, removal efficiencies from 71 to 81%, corresponding to final COD of 78 to 33 mg L-1, were achieved. Also, the adsorbent surface was continuously regenerated, promoting a more efficient adsorption and a longer service life for the AC filter. In this case, by using a current density of 0.5 mA cm-2, COD was reduced to sufficiently small values for discharge into natural water bodies, maintaining low energy consumption and therefore acceptable operation costs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This research work establishes the relationship between job strain and being overweight among Mexican managers. Recently in Mexico, there has been a sharp increase in work-related diseases and mental health disorders. Furthermore, evidence shows that Mexicans rank top among employees who suffer from stress, yet research on the impact of job strain on the phenomena of obesity and being overweight among such vulnerable job positions in the industrial field is scarce. METHODS: The sample included 170 overweight middle and senior managers from six companies in the Mexican Manufacturing Industry. Cedillo's Spanish version of the Job Content Questionnaire by Karasek was used, and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was used to characterize an overweight condition. Structural Equations Modelling studied the relationships among variables. RESULTS: Even though, the model shows a power of explanation of 6%(R2 = 0.06), the variable showing the greatest direct effect on the overweight variable is social support, with 21%(p < 0.01, ß= -0.21). Regarding the total effects, only two of the four variables studied contributed directly to the overweight variation: the social support variable and the job demand variable. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the model hold a relatively low explanatory power; however, they do show a relationship between the studied variables. Also, the importance of the supervisor and co-workers' support should be considered when developing organizational strategies for the prevention of work stress and an overweight condition.

RESUMO

The effects of family of origin violence and intimate partner violence have been extensively documented; however, very few studies have examined the interaction with emotion regulation strategies. Thus, the objective of this research was to analyze whether different types of emotion regulation strategies, both adaptive and maladaptive, mediate the relationship between family of origin violence and intimate partner violence in the Mexican population. A total of 838 participants (45.9% men and 54.1% women) responded to instruments addressing family of origin violence, emotion regulation strategies, and intimate partner violence. The results revealed that both structural models were significant. For women, the model showed an adequate fit X2 (11, N = 838) = 22.75, p = .288, GFI = .95, AGFI = .91, NFI = .98, CFI = .97, RMSEA = .05. Likewise, we found similar indexes for men X2 (11, N = 838) = 28.20, p = .348, GFI = .97, AGFI = .93, NFI = .97, CFI = .95, RMSEA = .04. Specifically, the direct effects of adaptive strategies on intimate partner violence were statistically significant. Meanwhile, the direct effects of family of origin violence on maladaptive emotion regulation strategies were significant, as were the direct effects of maladaptive strategies on intimate partner violence. In turn, the indirect effects of family of-origin violence were significantly related to intimate partner violence via maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. In addition, the results clearly showed that men reported higher levels of aggression against women. Finally, regarding the selection of emotion regulation strategies, while women employed more adaptive emotion regulation, men showed a more definite tendency to use maladaptive emotion regulation.

RESUMO

Maternal separation has been shown to disrupt proper brain development and maturation, having profound consequences on the neuroendocrine systems in charge of the stress response, and has been shown to induce behavioral and cognitive abnormalities. At the behavioral level, maternal separation has been shown to increase offensive play-fighting in juvenile individuals and reduce social interest in adulthood. Since most of the studies that have evaluated the consequences of maternal separation on social behavior have focused on behavioral analysis, there is a need for a further understanding of the neuronal mechanisms underlying the changes in social behavior induced by maternal separation. Therefore, the aim of the present research was to assess the long-term effects of maternal separation on social interaction behavior and to assess the activity of several brain regions involved in the processing of social cues and reward upon social novelty exposure, using c-Fos immunohistochemistry as a marker of neuronal activity. Male Wistar rats were subjected to 4 h maternal separation during the neonatal period, 9:00 h-13:00 h from postnatal day 1 to 21, and exposed to social novelty during adulthood. After social novelty exposure, brains were fixed and coronal sections of the medial amygdala, lateral septum (LS), paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, nucleus accumbens, and medial prefrontal cortex were obtained for c-Fos immunohistochemistry. Maternally separated rats spent less time investigating the novel peer, suggesting that maternal separation reduces social approach motivation. Furthermore, maternal separation reduced the number of c-Fos positive cells of the medial amygdala, paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, LS, nucleus accumbens, and medial prefrontal cortex upon social novelty exposure. These findings suggest that maternal separation can reduce the plastic capacity of several brain nuclei, which constitute a physiological basis for the emergence of behavioral disorders presented later in life reported to be linked to early life adversity.

RESUMO

An interlaboratory comparison for European radon calibration facilities was conducted to evaluate the establishment of a harmonized quality level for the activity concentration of radon in air and to demonstrate the performance of the facilities when calibrating measurement instruments for radon. Fifteen calibration facilities from 13 different European countries participated. They represented different levels in the metrological hierarchy: national metrology institutes and designated institutes, national authorities for radiation protection and participants from universities. The interlaboratory comparison was conducted by the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and took place from 2018 to 2020. Participants were requested to measure radon in atmospheres of their own facilities according to their own procedures and requirements for metrological traceability. A measurement device with suitable properties was used to determine the comparison values. The results of the comparison showed that the radon activity concentrations that were determined by European calibration facilities complying with metrological traceability requirements were consistent with each other and had common mean values. The deviations from these values were normally distributed. The range of variation of the common mean value was a measure of the degree of agreement between the participants. For exposures above 1000 Bq/m3, the variation was about 4% for a level of confidence of approximately 95% (k=2). For lower exposure levels, the variation increased to about 6%.

RESUMO

Transcriptional factors play an important role in gene regulation in all organisms, especially in Bacteria. Here special emphasis is placed in the AraC/XylS family of transcriptional regulators. This is one of the most abundant as many predicted members have been identified and more members are added because more bacterial genomes are sequenced. Given the way more experimental evidence has mounded in the past decades, we decided to update the information about this captivating family of proteins. Using bioinformatics tools on all the data available for experimentally characterized members of this family, we found that many members that display a similar functional classification can be clustered together and in some cases they have a similar regulatory scheme. A proposal for grouping these proteins is also discussed. Additionally, an analysis of surveyed proteins in bacterial genomes is presented. Altogether, the current review presents a panoramic view into this family and we hope it helps to stimulate future research in the field.

Introduction. Infections by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the most common cause of infectious mononucleosis and is also linked to multiple cancers. The prevalence of EBV infection varies in different populations and there is no publication about the epidemiology of this infection in Paraguay. Objective. To describethe seroprevalence among university students and associated sociodemographic characteristics. Material and Methods.Cross-sectional study in students from a public university in Alto Paraná, Paraguay.A total of 101 participants were recruited through consecutive sampling.Aquestionnaire was applied and blood samples were obtained. Antibodies were determined by Epstein-Barr Virus IgG anti-VCA capture ELISA method, and factors associated with seropositivity were evaluated. Results. The overall seropositivity was 89,1%(90/101), which was associated(p<0,025) with low socioeconomic status (93,4%vs 76%, OR: 4.9 [95% CI: 1.2 -16.3]). Conclusion. The seroprevalence to EBV is high in collegestudents which is associated to low socioeconomic condition. Key words: seroepidemiologic studies; antibodies; Epstein-Barr virus infections; students; Paraguay

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most important cause of cancer death in Mexico, so health literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic is very important to reduce morbidity and mortality. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction of an educational oncology program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods: Quasi-experimental study pre-post educational intervention (brief educational program), in 31 patients who underwent chemotherapy during the pandemic between April and July 2021, including COVID-19 education, therapeutic education in breast cancer and health promotion recommendations. Health literacy was analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank test for related samples. Results: The Wilcoxon test was statistically significant pre-post educational program (Z − 4,876, p < 0.001) with an increase from 70% to 83.3% of correct answers after the educational program and a satisfaction of 87.09%. Conclusion: A brief educational program, implemented in a cancer hospital during the pandemic, is effective in increasing health literacy and is highly valued by the participants. (AU)

RESUMO

A desirable goal of the aquaculture sector is to replace most of fish meal and fish oil with more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmental friendly ingredients ensuring fish health and welfare standards. Due to minimal environmental impact, compared with most conventional feed commodities, insects deserve a growing attention as candidate ingredients for aquafeeds. The present study investigated, for the first time, the possible application of a 100% insect diet in zebrafish larval rearing. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the major biological responses of fish to the new diets were assessed. Results of biometry, fatty acid composition, expression of genes involved in fish growth, stress response, lipid metabolism, chitinolytic activity, gut inflammation, and liver macromolecular composition suggested a possible application of insect larvae for zebrafish larval rearing. However, further studies are necessary to better understand the use of this insect species in the rearing of fish.
