BACKGROUND: The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) is continuously increasing worldwide. Current guidelines in China recommend average-risk individuals starting CRC screening at age 50. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between the gastric histopathology and colorectal neoplasms to identify CRC risk factors which potentially guide earlier colonoscopy in individuals aged < 50 years. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 8819 patients younger than age 50 who underwent gastroscopy and colonoscopy simultaneously between November 7, 2020 and November 14, 2022. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate whether various gastric histopathology are risk factors for different types of colorectal polyps, reporting odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: A total of 3390 cases (38.44%) under 50 years old were diagnosed as colorectal polyps. Advanced age (OR 1.66, 95%CI 1.57-1.76), male sex (OR 2.67, 95%CI 2.33-3.08), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection (OR 1.43, 95%CI 1.24-1.65), gastric polyps (OR 1.29, 95%CI 1.10-1.52), and low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) (OR 2.52, 95%CI 1.39-4.57) were independent risk factors for colorectal adenomas. For non-adenomatous polyps, reflux esophagitis (OR 1.38, 95%CI 1.11-1.71) was also an independent risk factor. Besides, older age (OR 1.90, 95%CI 1.66-2.18), male sex (OR 2.15, 95%CI 1.60-2.87), and H. pylori infection (OR 1.67, 95%CI 1.24-2.24) were associated with a higher risk of advanced neoplasms (advanced adenoma and CRC). CONCLUSIONS: Earlier colonoscopy for identification and screening may need to be considered for individuals younger than 50 years old with H. pylori infection, LGIN, gastric polyps, and reflux esophagitis. Risk-adapted CRC screening initiation age allows a personalized and precise screening.

BACKGROUND: Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy is the first-line treatment for eradicating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The optimal duration for H. pylori eradication using bismuth-containing quadruple therapy remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to compare the clinical effects of the 10- and 14-day bismuth-containing quadruple treatment regimen to eradicate H. pylori. METHODS: Treatment-naïve patients with H. pylori infection (n = 1300) were enrolled in this multicenter randomized controlled study across five hospitals in China. They were randomized into 10- or 14-day treatment groups to receive bismuth-containing quadruple therapy as follows: vonoprazan 20 mg twice daily; bismuth 220 mg twice daily; amoxicillin 1000 mg twice daily; and either clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily or tetracycline 500 mg four times daily. At least 6 weeks after treatment, we performed a 13C-urea breath test to evaluate H. pylori eradication. RESULTS: The per-protocol eradication rates were 93.22% (564/605) and 93.74% (569/607) (p < 0.001) and the intention-to-treat eradication rates were 88.62% (576/650) and 89.38% (581/650) (p = 0.007) for the 10- and 14-day regimens, respectively. Incidence of adverse effects was lower in patients who received 10- vs. 14 days of treatment (22.59% vs. 28.50%, p = 0.016). We observed no significant differences in the compliance to treatment or the discontinuation of therapy because of severe adverse effects between the groups. CONCLUSION: Compared with the 14-day bismuth-containing quadruple regimens, the 10-day regimen demonstrated a non-inferior efficacy and lower incidence of adverse effects. Therefore, the 10-day regimen is safe and tolerated and could be recommended for H. pylori eradication (NCT05049902).

Terahertz (THz) non-destructive testing can detect internal defects in dielectric materials. However, this technology is mainly used for detecting thin and simple structures at present, lacking validations for the detection effectiveness of internal defects in thicker and more complex structures, such as fiber-web-reinforced composite sandwich panels. In this study, samples of fiber-web-reinforced polymethacrylimide foam sandwich panels, which are, respectively, 20 mm and 30 mm thick, were made to detect the internal debonding, inclusion, pore, and crack defects by the THz time-domain spectroscopy system (THz-TDS). The peak-to-peak-imaging algorithm, maximum-amplitude-imaging algorithm, minimum-amplitude-imaging algorithm, pulse-width-imaging algorithm, and time-of-flight-imaging algorithm were used to process and image the collected THz signals. The results showed that the peak-to-peak-imaging algorithm had the best performance. To address the low imaging resolution of THz-TDS, a block-based super-resolution reconstruction method-SSSRGAN-is proposed, which can improve image resolution while maintaining the clear edge contours of defects. The defect-detection results of the samples showed that THz-TDS could detect all pore, debonding, and crack defects, with a minimum size of 3 mm for pores and debonding and a minimum thickness of 1 mm for cracks. The method showed poor detection performance for inclusions with a thickness of 0.053 mm, but could still extract the defect features. Based on the THz-TDS reflection mode measurement principle, the thickness information of the panel, foam core, and web of the samples was calculated: the measurement error was no more than 0.870 mm for Sample #1 and no more than 0.270 mm for Sample #2, demonstrating the accuracy of THz-TDS in measuring the dimensions of sandwich panel structures. In general, THz technology shows potential for detecting internal defects and performing dimensional measurements in complex structures. With the advancement of portable devices and enhancements in detection speed, real-time on-site detection is anticipated in the future.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the region-specific relative risk of cardia/non-cardia gastric cancer (CGC/NCGC) associated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and quantify its contribution to gastric cancer burden using population attributable fraction (PAF). METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central databases were searched by two reviewers until April 20, 2022. The association between H. pylori infection and NCGC/CGC was assessed using pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). PAF was calculated using the formula of H. pylori prevalence and the pooled OR. RESULTS: One hundred and eight studies were included. A significant association was observed between H. pylori infection and NCGC in East Asia (OR, 4.36; 95% CI: 3.54-5.37) and the West (OR, 4.03; 95% CI: 2.59-6.27). Regarding CGC, a significant association was found only in East Asia (OR, 2.86; 95% CI: 2.26-3.63), not in the West (OR, 0.80; 95% CI: 0.61-1.05). For studies with a follow-up time of ≥10 years, pooled ORs for NCGC and CGC in East Asia were 5.58 (95% CI: 4.08-7.64) and 3.86 (95% CI: 2.69-5.55), respectively. Pooled OR for NCGC was 6.80 (95% CI: 3.78-12.25) in the West. PAFs showed that H. pylori infection accounted for 71.2% of NCGC, 60.7% of CGC in East Asia, and 73.2% of NCGC in the West. CONCLUSIONS: Gastric cancer burden associated with H. pylori infection exhibits important geographical differences. Prolonged follow-up period could overcome the underestimation of the magnitude of the association between H. pylori infection and CGC/NCGC. Customized strategies for H. pylori screening and eradication should be implemented to prevent gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomach, can cause chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers, as well as gastric cancer as a Class I carcinogen. However, the modes of H. pylori transmission are not clear. This review aims to clarify the transmission routes and patterns of H. pylori and identify efficacious prevention measures. METHODS: Studies of H. pylori transmission were identified using PubMed, the Web of Science, and Cochrane Central; the retrieval deadline was October 2022. RESULTS: The transmission routes of H. pylori are discussed, focusing on the five primary transmission routes, namely fecal-oral, oral-oral, gastric-oral, anal-oral, and genital-oral. We propose that H. pylori is contracted through multiple transmission routes. Additionally, we summarize the key transmission patterns of H. pylori, including person-to-person and animal-to-human transmission, as well as foodborne and occupational exposure. CONCLUSION: Fecal-oral appears to be the most common H. pylori transmission routes. Although the oral-oral pathway is also important, the evidence does not support that this route of transmission is universal. The gastric-oral route occurs primarily in children and patients who are prone to vomiting. Meanwhile, the anal-oral and genital-oral routes remain hypothetical. Person-to-person and foodborne infections represent the predominant transmission patterns of H. pylori, whereas strong environmental and occupational limitations are associated with animal-to-human and occupational exposure.

In this study, an efficient phosphorus-containing flame retardant, PAPBTCA, was synthesized from phytic acid, pentaerythritol, and 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic acid, and its structure was characterized. PAPBTCA was finished on cotton fabrics by the pad-dry-curing process, and the flame retardancy, flame-retardant durability, and wrinkle resistance of the obtained flame-retardant fabrics were investigated. It should be noted that the heat release rate value of the flame-retardant cotton fabrics treated with 200 g/L PAPBTCA decreased by 90% and its excellent flame retardancy was maintained after 5 washing cycles. Meanwhile, the wrinkle resistance of flame-retardant cotton fabrics has been significantly improved. In addition, compared with the control, the breaking force loss of PAPBTCA-200 in the warp and weft directions was 24% and 21%, respectively. This study provides a new way to utilize natural phosphorus-based flame retardants to establish multifunctional finishing for cotton fabrics.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of anemoside B4(B4) on fatty acid metabolism in mice with colitis-associated cancer(CAC). The CAC model was established by azoxymethane(AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate(DSS) in mice. Mice were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, and low-, medium-, and high-dose anemoside B4 groups. After the experiment, the length of the mouse colon and the size of the tumor were measured, and the pathological alterations in the mouse colon were observed using hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining. The slices of the colon tumor were obtained for spatial metabolome analysis to analyze the distribution of fatty acid metabolism-related substances in the tumor. The mRNA levels of SREBP-1, FAS, ACCα, SCD-1, PPARα, ACOX, UCP-2, and CPT-1 were determined by real-time quantitative PCR(RT-qPCR). The results revealed that the model group showed decreased body weight(P<0.05) and colon length(P<0.001), increased number of tumors, and increased pathological score(P<0.01). Spatial metabolome analysis revealed that the content of fatty acids and their derivatives, carnitine, and phospholipid in the colon tumor was increased. RT-qPCR results indicated that fatty acid de novo synthesis and ß-oxidation-related genes, such as SREBP-1, FASN, ACCα, SCD-1, ACOX, UCP-2, and CPT-1 mRNA expression levels increased considerably(P<0.05, P<0.001). After anemoside B4 administration, the colon length increased(P<0.01), and the number of tumors decreased in the high-dose anemoside B4 group(P<0.05). Additionally, spatial metabolome analysis showed that anemoside B4 could decrease the content of fatty acids and their derivatives, carnitine, and phospholipids in colon tumors. Meanwhile, anemoside B4 could also down-regulate the expression of FASN, ACCα, SCD-1, PPARα, ACOX, UCP-2, and CPT-1 in the colon(P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001). The findings of this study show that anemoside B4 may inhibit CAC via regulating fatty acid metabolism reprogramming.

Studies regarding malnutrition in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using the Global Leadership Initiative in Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria are still limited. Our study aimed to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition using the GLIM criteria in NPC patients receiving radiotherapy and explore the relationship between pre-radiotherapy (pre-RT) malnutrition and survival. A total of 113 NPC patients were enrolled for nutritional assessment using the GLIM criteria at different radiotherapeutic time points, and related toxicities were graded. Regarding the results, 19 patients (16.8%) were malnourished before radiotherapy and 103 patients (91.2%) were malnourished at the end of radiotherapy. Among the phenotypic GLIM criteria, low fat-free muscle index (FFMI) before radiotherapy was associated with mucositis and radiodermatitis (p < 0.05). Importantly, patients with malnutrition before radiotherapy had significantly poorer 2-year progression free survival (PFS) than the patients being well-nourished (62.1% vs. 88.9%, p = 0.015). From the multivariate Cox regression model, being-well nourished before radiotherapy was the protective factor for PFS (HR: 0.27; 95%CI: 0.089-0.85; p = 0.023) and male was the risk factor for PFS (HR: 7.25; 95%CI: 1.548-34.00; p = 0.012). In conclusion, malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria is common in NPC patients undergoing radiotherapy, and pre-RT malnutrition is correlated with survival.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/01635581.2022.2044059.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is increasing worldwide, and bismuth quadruple therapy has been recommended as a first-line regimen in many areas. This study aimed to investigate whether bismuth would improve the eradication rate (ER) of clarithromycin-/metronidazole-/levofloxacin-resistant H. pylori strains and how much additional efficacy bismuth could achieve. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central databases for randomized controlled trials were systematically searched by two independent reviewers until 15 January 2022. Pooled ERs of clarithromycin-/metronidazole-/levofloxacin-resistant H. pylori strains were compared between bismuth-containing and non-bismuth therapies. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Eight studies enrolling 340 individuals were included. The RRs of pooled ERs compared between bismuth-containing and non-bismuth therapies were 1.83 for clarithromycin-resistant strains (95% CI 1.16-2.89, pooled ER: 76.9% vs. 36.6%, p = .009, I2  = 0%), 1.39 for metronidazole-resistant strains (95% CI 1.09-1.78, pooled ER: 86.8% vs. 60.9%, p = .008, I2  = 37%), 2.75 for dual clarithromycin/metronidazole-resistant strains (95% CI 1.01-7.52, pooled ER: 76.9% vs. 18.2%, p = .05, I2  = 0%), and 1.04 for levofloxacin-resistant strains (95% CI 0.56-1.93, pooled ER: 63.4% vs. 54.3%, p = .90; I2  = 60%). Bismuth significantly increased the ERs of clarithromycin-, metronidazole-, and dual-resistant strains by 40%, 26%, and 59%, respectively. Subgroup analysis of treatment duration showed that the significantly higher eradication rate for antibiotic-resistant strains in bismuth-containing therapy than non-bismuth therapy was only observed in 14-day treatment regimens and not in 7-day regimens (p = .02 and .17, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Bismuth was most effective in improving the ERs of dual-resistant H. pylori strains, followed by clarithromycin- and metronidazole-resistant strains. Prolonged treatment duration might effectively improve the efficacy of bismuth in overcoming antibiotic resistance.

BACKGROUND: Intra-family transmission is an important Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection route. Family-based screening and treatment of H. pylori is a promising strategy. However, limited data are available on patient compliance with post-screening recommendations for such a strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study of families from six regions in Shandong, China, from July 2021 to February 2022 was conducted. Demographic characteristics, prior testing, and treatment for H. pylori, prior gastroscopy, symptoms, and family history were collected. Infection status of participants was determined using the 13 C-urea breath test. Infected participants were recommended to undergo eradication treatment, confirmation testing, and gastroscopy per expert consensus. Participants were monitored for 6 months to record recommendation compliance in a real-world setting. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the factors influencing compliance with the recommendations. RESULTS: The study included 1173 individuals from 386 families with the overall infection rate of 36.7%. The recommendation compliance for eradication treatment, confirmation testing, and gastroscopy was 69.3% (271/391), 32.5% (88/271), and 6.1% (19/309), respectively. Factors that increased the risk of lower compliance were male sex (odds ratio [OR], 1.917, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.233-2.981), and living in a non-urban area (OR, 1.954, 95% CI, 1.241-3.074), for treatment recommendations; having more than one infected family member (OR, 2.138, 95% CI, 1.237-3.698), and a lower family income (¥100,000-¥300,000 per year, OR, 7.247, 95% CI, 1.788-29.363; or <¥100,000 per year, OR, 7.294, 95% CI, 1.832-29.042), for confirmation testing recommendations; and being asymptomatic (OR, 3.009, 95% CI, 1.105-8.196), for gastroscopy recommendations. CONCLUSIONS: Post-screening recommendation compliance for this family-based H. pylori screening and treatment program was unsatisfactory. Further studies focusing on pre-screening education are warranted to improve compliance.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) patients with multiple primary cancers (MPCs) and to compare differences between patients with metachronous and synchronous MPCs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 219 patients with HPSCC treated at our center between 2008 and 2020; the clinical characteristics and prognosis of 66 patients with MPCs were analyzed. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the factors between patients with synchronous and metachronous MPCs. RESULTS: Sixty-six patients with HPSCC (66/219, 30.1%) experienced MPCs, of which 29 were synchronous and 37 were metachronous. The esophagus (n = 39, 59.1%), lung (n = 10, 15.2%), and oropharynx (n = 4, 6.1%) were the three most common sites of MPCs in both the synchronous and metachronous groups. More patients with synchronous MPCs were stage T1-2 (82.8% vs. 59.5%, P = 0.041) compared to those with metachronous MPCs. Among the 24 pairs of patients after PSM, patients with metachronous MPCs had higher 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) (52.5% vs. 16.3%, P < 0.001) and overall survival (OS) (58.5% vs. 22.1%, P = 0.001) than those with synchronous cancers. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that patients with synchronous MPCs had shorter PFS (HR 4.45, 95% CI 1.819-10.885, P = 0.001) and OS (HR 3.918, 95% CI 1.591-9.645, P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: MPCs are common among patients with HPSCC, and patients with metachronous MPCs had better survival than those with synchronous MPCs. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of MPCs in patients with HPSCC and optimize treatment to improve outcomes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify whether the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) correlated with the prognosis of patients with locally advanced hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HPSCC) undergoing radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy. METHODS: This study enrolled 103 patients diagnosed with LA-HPSCC and treated with radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy between 2008 and 2021. The optimal PLR cut-off value was chosen from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. According to the cut-off value of PLR, patients were divided into two groups: a low PLR group (< 133.06) and a high PLR group (≥ 133.06). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the confounding factors between the two PLR groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models, the Kaplan-Meier curve by the log-rank test, and univariate and multivariate Fine-Gray competing risk models were all used for assessment. RESULTS: After PSM, 27 pairs were left, and the high PLR group correlated with higher local failure (sHR 6.91, 95% CI 2.14-22.35, p = 0.001) in the multivariate Fine-Gray competing risk model. Moreover, the low PLR group had a significantly longer 3-year progression-free survival (43.7% vs. 29.2%, p = 0.038) and overall survival (55.1% vs. 32.1%, p = 0.034) than the high PLR group had. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that a low PLR was an independent protective factor for PFS (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21-0.92, p = 0.019) and OS (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.22-0.96, p = 0.039) in patients with LA-HPSCC. CONCLUSION: Pretherapy PLR might be a factor in predicting the risk of local failure and survival in LA-HPSCC patients undergoing radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy.

cAMP-PKA signaling plays a pivotal role in melanin synthesis and melanosome transport by responding to the binding of the α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) to melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R). Adenylate cyclases (ADCYs) are the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of cAMP from ATP, which comprises nine transmembrane isoforms (ADCYs 1-9) and one soluble adenylate cyclase (ADCY 10) in mammals. However, little is known about which and how ADCY isoforms regulate melanocyte generation, melanin biosynthesis, and melanosome transport in vivo. In this study, we have generated a series of single and double mutants of Adcy isoforms in zebrafish. Among them, adcy3a-/- and adcy5-/- double mutants cause defects in melanosome dispersion but do not impair melanoblast differentiation and melanocyte regeneration during the embryonic or larval stages. Activation of PKA, the main effector of cAMP signaling, significantly ameliorates the defects in melanosome dispersion in adcy3a-/- and adcy5-/- double mutants. Mechanistically, Adcy3a and Adcy5 regulate melanosome dispersion by activating kinesin-1 while inhibiting cytoplasmic dynein-1. In adult zebrafish, Adcy3a and Adcy5 participate in the regulation of the expression of microphthalmia transcription factor (Mitfa) and melanin synthesis enzymes Tyr, Dct, and Trp1b. The deletion of Adcy3a and Adcy5 inhibits melanin production and reduces pigmented melanocyte numbers, causing a defect in establishing adult melanocyte stripes. Hence, our studies demonstrate that Adcy3a and Adcy5 play essential but redundant functions in mediating α-MSH-MC1R/cAMP-PKA signaling for regulating melanin synthesis and melanosome dispersion.

Mast cells (MCs) are an important treatment target for high-affinity IgE Fc receptor (FcεRI)-mediated allergic diseases. The plant-derived molecule 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) has beneficial effects in animal models of inflammation and autoimmunity diseases. The aim of this study was to examine 4-MU effects on MC activation and probe the underlying molecular mechanism(s). We sensitized rat basophilic leukemia cells (RBLs) and mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) with anti-dinitrophenol (DNP) immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies, stimulated them with exposure to DNP-human serum albumin (HSA), and then treated stimulated cells with 4-MU. Signaling-protein expression was determined by immunoblotting. In vivo allergic responses were examined in IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) mouse models. 4-MU inhibited ß-hexosaminidase activity and histamine release dose-dependently in FcεRI-activated RBLs and BMMCs. Additionally, 4-MU reduced cytomorphological elongation and F-actin reorganization while down-regulating IgE/Ag-induced phosphorylation of SYK, NF-κB p65, ERK1/2, p38, and JNK. Moreover, 4-MU attenuated the PCA allergic reaction (i.e., less ear thickening and dye extravasation). Similarly, we found that 4-MU decreased body temperature, serum histamine, and IL4 secretion in OVA-challenged ASA model mice. In conclusion, 4-MU had a suppressing effect on MC activation both in vitro and in vivo and thus may represent a new strategy for treating IgE-mediated allergic conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The increase in antibiotic resistance makes the eradication of Helicobacter pylori more difficult. Considering the limitations of the application of susceptibility-guided therapy, it is important to find an effective empirical regimen. The aim of the study is to compare the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of clarithromycin-based bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (C-BQT) and furazolidone-based bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (F-BQT) in naïve H. pylori positive patients. METHODS: This was an open-label, randomized controlled, crossover trial. The trial comprised two phases. In C-F group, patients received C-BQT in the first phase; those who were still positive for H. pylori infection after the first phase entered the second phase to receive F-BQT as rescue treatment. In F-C group, patients were treated with F-BQT firstly and rescued with C-BQT. RESULTS: As first-line treatments, the eradication rates of C-BQT and F-BQT were 89.7% (157/175) and 92.0% (161/175) (P = 0.458) in intention-to-treat analysis and 93.4% (156/167) and 95.8% (161/168) (P = 0.327) in per-protocol analysis, respectively. The cumulative eradication rates of the C-F group and the F-C group were both 94.3% in intention-to-treat analysis (P = 1.000). Cost-effectiveness indexes of F-BQT and C-BQT were 0.54 and 1.24 in first-line treatments. Frequencies of adverse events in F-BQT and C-BQT had no differences (36.0% in C-BQT vs 32.6% in F-BQT, P = 0.499). CONCLUSIONS: Furazolidone-based bismuth-containing quadruple therapy should be preferred for its excellent cost-effectiveness and acceptable safety.

Three zeolitic pentaborates (H2en)[B5O8(OH)] (1, en = ethylenediamine), (Hen)2[Al(B5O10)] (2), (H2en)[NH(CH3)2][Al(B5O10)] (3) were solvothermally obtained by employing ethanediamine molecules as structure-directing agents (SDAs). The nonmetal borate of 1 features a noncentrosymmetric two-dimensional layered structure. Through introducing Al atoms as the linkers and regulating the reaction conditions of 1, two three-dimensional zeolitic open-framework aluminoborates, noncentrosymmetric (NCS) of 2 and centrosymmetric (CS) of 3, were achieved. Both 2 and 3 exhibit [Al(B5O10)] n2 n- zeolitic frameworks based on the same fundamental building blocks (FBBs). However, the different arrangements between two FBBs result in 2 showing a NCS framework with dia topology, while 3 presents CS framework with cag topology. The flexibility of linkages modes of the FBBs as well as the unique structure-directing functions play crucial roles in the different formations. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements revealed that acentric 1 and 2 possess nonlinear optical activity and 2 is type I phase-matchable with SHG responses of ∼1.0 time for KDP (KH2PO4). Infrared and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, along with electronic structure calculations, were also performed for the materials.

In the present research, treatment of contaminated groundwater via adsorption of As(V) with an initial concentration of 50.99 µg/L using chitosan-coated bentonite (CCB) was investigated. The effect of adsorbent mass (0.001 to 2.0 g), temperature (298 to 328 K), and contact time (1 to 180 min) on the removal efficiency was examined. Adsorption data was evaluated using isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich. Isotherm study showed that the Langmuir (R2 > 0.9899; χ2 ≤ 0.91; RMSE ≤ 4.87) model best correlates with the experimental data. Kinetics studies revealed that pseudo-second order equation adequately describes the experimental data (R2 ≥ 0.9951; χ2 ≤ 0.8.33; RMSE ≤ 4.31) where equilibrium was attained after 60 min. Thermodynamics study shows that the As(V) adsorption is non-spontaneous (ΔG0 ≥ 0) and endothermic (ΔH0 = 8.31 J/mol) that would result in an increase in randomness (ΔS0 = 29.10 kJ/mol•K) within the CCB-solution interface. FT-IR analysis reveals that hydroxyl and amino groups are involved in the adsorption of As(V) from groundwater. Results of the present research serve as a tool to determine whether CCB is an environmentally safe and cost effective material that could be utilized in a permeable reactive barrier system for the remediation of As(V) from contaminated groundwater.

Porous materials that can undergo pore-structure adjustment to better accommodate specific molecules are ideal for separation and purification. Here, we report a stable microporous metal-organic framework, JNU-1, featuring one-dimensional diamond-shaped channels with a high density of open metal sites arranged on the surface for the cooperative binding of acetylene. Together with its framework flexibility and appropriate pore geometry, JNU-1 exhibits an induced-fit behavior for acetylene. The specific binding sites and continuous framework adaptation upon increased acetylene pressure are validated by molecular modeling and in situ X-ray diffraction study. This unique induced-fit behavior endows JNU-1 with an unprecedented increase in the acetylene binding affinity (adsorption enthalpy: up to 47.6 kJ mol-1 at ca. 2.0 mmol g-1 loading).

A facile method to prepare nitrogen anion-decorated cobalt tungsten disulfides solid solutions, retaining ultra-thin WS2-like nanosheet structures (The N-Co x W1-x S2) anchored on carbon nanofibers (CNFs), is developed. The synergistic effect of the WS2 nanosheets provides a secure framework for stabilizing the amorphous Co-S clusters, CNFs substrate and nitrogen anion-decoration significantly enhances the inherent conductivity of the catalyst, resulting in a significantly promoted hydrogen evolution reaction activity and stable performance compared to pure Co9S8 nanoparticles or ultra-thin WS2 nanosheets. The N-Co x W1-x S2 electrode demonstrates the excellent electrocatalytic performance, with current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 93 mV and Tafel slope of 85 mV dec-1, as well as the long-term stability in acid electrolyte. The present investigation may provide a feasible strategy for incorporating other heteroatoms into transitional metal disulfides materials to design catalysts with highly active and stable performance for water splitting.

In the present work, the removal efficiency of As(V) from aqueous solution using chitosan-coated bentonite (CCB), chitosan-coated kaolinite (CCK) and chitosan-coated sand (CCS) was evaluated. The chitosan-based adsorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and thermogravimetric analysis. Kinetic studies revealed that As(V) uptake using CCB, CCK and CCS fitted well with the pseudo-second order equation (R2 ≥ 0.9847; RMSE ≤ 9.1833). Equilibrium data show good correlation with the Langmuir model (R2 ≥ 0.9753; RMSE ≤ 8.5123; SSE ≤ 16.2651) for all adsorbents, which implies monolayer coverage onto homogenous energy sites. The Langmuir adsorption capacity for As(V) at pH 7.0 was determined to be 67.11, 64.85, and 16.78 mg/g for CCB, CCK and CCS, respectively. Thermodynamic studies show that As(V) uptake is exothermic in nature using CCK and endothermic using CCB and CCS. Moreover, adsorption of As(V) was feasible and spontaneous for CCB and CCS at 298 to 328 K. Results show that CCB is the most effective adsorbent in the removal of As(V) from water due to its high surface area and large pore diameter.
