OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) radiotherapy plans generated by the automated planning module of a commercial treatment planning system (TPS). METHODS: Data of 30 patients with locally advanced NPC were retrospectively investigated. For each patient, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans with double arcs were generated manually by experienced physicists and automatically in the Pinnacle3 Auto-Planning module (Philips Medical Systems, Fitchburg, WI, USA). The anatomic distance between the second clinical target volume (CTV2) and the pons of the brainstem, and the T category of disease were factored into the evaluation. Dosimetric verification was evaluated in terms of gamma pass rate. Target coverage, sparing of organs at risk (OARs), and monitor units were evaluated and compared between the manual and automatic VMAT plans. RESULTS: Not all treatment plans fully met the dose objectives for planning target volumes (PTVs) and OARs, particularly in T4 patients. Overall, automatic VMAT provides a comparable or superior plan quality to manual VMAT in most cases. In stratified analysis, plan quality is mainly independent on T category but is also affected by anatomic distance. If the anatomic distance is less than 5 mm, the automatic VMAT plan quality is equal or even inferior to manual VMAT performed by experienced physicists. Conversely, if the anatomic distance is greater than 5 mm, the automatic VMAT plan quality is superior to manual VMAT. Gamma pass rates for quality assurance are similar between manual and automatic VMAT plans for the former case, but significantly higher in automatic VMAT for the latter. CONCLUSION: The selection of manual versus automatic VMAT planning in locally advanced NPC should be made individually based on the anatomic distance, rather than blindly and habitually, since automatic VMAT is not good enough to completely replace manual VMAT.

How an interfacial superconductivity emerges during the nucleation and epitaxy is of great importance not only for unveiling the physical insights but also for finding a feasible way to tune the superconductivity via interfacial engineering. In this work, we report the nanoscale creation of a robust and relatively homogeneous interfacial superconductivity (TC ≈ 13 K) on the epitaxial FeTe surface, by van der Waals epitaxy of single-quintuple-layer topological insulator Bi2Te3. Our study suggests that the superconductivity in the Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure is generated at the interface and that the superconductivity at the interface does not enhance or weaken with the increase of the Bi2Te3 thickness beyond 1 quintuple layer (QL). The observation of the topological surface states crossing Fermi energy in the Bi2Te3/FeTe heterostructure with the average Bi2Te3 thickness of about 20 QL provides further evidence that this heterostructure may potentially host Majorana zero modes.

The heterostructures of the ferromagnet (Cr2Te3) and topological insulator (Bi2Te3) have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The topological Hall effect as evidence of the existence of magnetic skyrmions has been observed in the samples in which Cr2Te3 was grown on top of Bi2Te3. Detailed structural characterizations have unambiguously revealed the presence of intercalated Bi bilayer nanosheets right at the interface of those samples. The atomistic spin-dynamics simulations have further confirmed the existence of magnetic skyrmions in such systems. The heterostructures of ferromagnet and topological insulator that host magnetic skyrmions may provide an important building block for next generation of spintronics devices.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is rare, and the diagnosis is often delayed. Here, we describe a case of Fabry disease resulting in vasculopathy of the central nervous system. Magnetic resonance (MR) black-blood sequence (three-dimensional T1 volumetric isotropic turbo spin echo acquisition), with the unique advantage of imaging the vascular wall, facilitated a clear identification of the vasculopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man visited our hospital for the treatment of " double vision 6d." After a series of examinations, the patient was diagnosed with Fabry disease, which caused vasculopathy of the central nervous system. Subsequently, the patient was treated with corticosteroids and his symptoms were attenuated. Two months after the initial treatment, the initial lesion in the vascular vessel disappeared, however, a new lesion appeared. Similarly, four months after the initial treatment, although the previous lesion disappeared, a new lesion appeared. CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights that clinicians should use MR black-blood sequence scan in a timely manner in case of young patients with migratory lesions of brain. In case of detection of a vascular lesion in combination with other systemic lesions, the possibility of Fabry disease should be considered.

Rats were divided into six groups: sham/control , Dl-3-n-butylphthalide, P1 (low phenytoin, 100 mg/kg), P2 (high phenytoin, 200 mg/kg), NP1 (Dl-3-n-butylphthalide 80 mg/kg, phenytoin 100 mg/kg), NP2 (Dl-3-n-butylphthalide 80 mg/kg, phenytoin 200 mg/kg). Hematoxylin/eosin and Nissl staining showed that, compared to the sham/control group, the Dl-3-n-butylphthalide group had no obvious hippocampal and cerebellar neuron loss, but there was a significant neuron loss in the P1 and P2 groups (P < 0.05), which was more obvious in the P2 group (P < 0.05). The positive expression of Bax and Bcl-2 proteins in hippocampal and cerebellar neurons was not significantly different between sham and Dl-3-n-butylphthalide groups; however, compared to sham, Bax expression was significantly increased and Bcl-2 was significantly decreased in the hippocampal and cerebellar neurons of rats in both P1 and P2 groups (P < 0.05), being more obvious in the P2 group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the administration of Dl-3-n-butylphthalide attenuated the deleterious effects of phenytoin (P < 0.05). Our results indicate that phenytoin causes apoptosis of hippocampal and cerebellar neurons in rats in a dose-dependent manner, with the effect of a higher dose being more obvious, whereas, Dl-3-n-butylphthalide inhibits the phenytoin-induced apoptosis of neurons and has a neuroprotective role.

BACKGROUND: To summarize the characteristics of primary central nervous system vasculitis from clinical, imaging, and pathological aspects by retrospective study. METHODS: From March 2015 to December 2017, the data of the inpatients of primary central nervous system vasculitis in first Hospital of Jilin University were collected, and their clinical manifestation, imaging, and pathological characteristics were analyzed by using a descriptive method. RESULTS: There were 18 patients, 10 males (55.56%) and 8 females (44.44%) separately. The age ranges from 16 years old to 49 years old, with the median age of 32 years old. There were 8 cases (44.44%) of epileptic seizure, 6 cases (33.33%) of abnormal behavior and cognition, 10 cases (55.56%) with sensorimotor abnormalities, 4 cases (22.22%) with dizziness, 4 cases (22.22%) with headache, 2 cases (11.11%) with facial pain, 2 cases (11.11%) with blurred vision, and 2 cases (11.11%) with unstable walking. Eight patients (44.44%) were identified with cerebral spinal fluid abnormalities. There were 12 cases (66.67%) with bilateral lesions and 6 cases (33.33%) with unilateral lesions, including the frontal lobe (18 cases, 100%), the parietal lobe (10 cases, 55.56%), the temporal and occipital lobe (8 cases, 44.44%). There were 12 cases (66.67%) combined with subcortical white matter involvement, 6 cases (33.33%) combined with meningeal involvement, 2 cases (11.11%) complicated with basal ganglia involvement and 2 cases (11.11%) complicated with spinal cord involvement. Most of the lesions were with unclear border (16 cases, 88.89%), 2 cases (11.11%) were with clear border. Cortical atrophy was identified in 6 cases (33.33%). There were 12 cases (66.67%) with the enhancement of the lesions and meningeal. The 3D Vessel Wall magnetic resonance imaging (VW-MRI) showed uniform thickness in all patients (18/18) with contrast enhancement of the vessel wall of the vasculitis artery. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical manifestation and imaging in primary central nervous system vasculitis are diverse. The 3D VW-MRI could achieve quantification assessment of vasculitis and provide more utility for primary angiitis of the central nervous system.

The effect of antibiotics on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is controversial, and the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, using Escherichia coli SM10λπ as the donor strain, which carries a chromosomally integrated RP4 plasmid, we investigated the effect of antibiotics on conjugational transfer of a mobilizable gentamicin (Gm) resistance plasmid. The results showed that an exposure to gentamicin that restricted the survival of recipient cells significantly enhanced SM10λπ-Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 conjugation, which was attenuated by a deficiency of lasI-rhlI, genes associated with the generation of the quorum sensing signals N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) in PAO1, or the deletion of the AHL receptor SdiA in SM10λπ. Subsequent mechanistic investigations revealed that a treatment with Gm repressed the mRNA expression of lasI and rhlI in PAO1 and upregulated traI expression in SM10λπ. Moreover, PAO1 treated with other quorum sensing (QS)-inhibiting antibiotics such as azithromycin or chloramphenicol also showed a conjugation-promoting ability. On the other hand, when using non-AHL-producing E. coli strain EC600 as the recipient cells, the promoting effect of Gm on conjugation could not be observed. These data suggest that AHL-SdiA contributes to the effectiveness of antibiotics on plasmid conjugation. Collectively, our findings highlight the HGT-promoting effect of antibiotics and suggest quorum sensing as a promising target for controlling antibiotic resistance dissemination. These findings have implications for assessing the risks of antibiotic use and developing advisable antibiotic treatment protocols.

The utilization of functional cling films presents a promising approach to alleviate post-harvest spoilage caused by microbial activity, oxidative metabolism, and moisture loss in agricultural products. To overcome the environmental problems of conventional packaging materials, in this study, we developed functional fruit and vegetable cling films based on glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride and rosemarinic acid cross-linked gelatin (RQ-GEL). The results indicate that the prepared RQ-GEL film possesses excellent UV light barrier properties and mechanical performance. RQ-GEL inhibited S. aureus and E. coli by 93.79% and 92.04%, respectively. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activities were as high as 87.69% and 84.6%. In the cherry tomato preservation experiment, when compared to uncovered samples, the RQ-GEL group had a 29.77% reduction in weight loss and a significant 26.92% reduction in hardness. Meanwhile, the RQ-GEL group delays the decline of fruit total soluble solids and titratable acidity content, and prolongs the preservation period of cherry tomatoes. Hence, RQ-GEL cling film is poised to emerge as a promising packaging material for the post-harvest preservation of agricultural products.

In lake ecosystems, pelagic-benthic coupling strength (PBCS) is closely related to foodweb structure and pollutant transport. However, the trophic transfer of antibiotics in a benthic-pelagic coupling foodweb (BPCFW) and the manner in which PBCS influences the trophic magnification factor (TMFs) of antibiotics is still not well understood in the whole lake. Herein, the trophic transfer behavior of 12 quinolone antibiotics (QNs) in the BPCFW of Baiyangdian Lake were studied during the period of 2018-2019. It was revealed that 24 dominant species were contained in the BPCFW, and the trophic level was 0.42-2.94. Seven QNs were detected in organisms, the detection frequencies of ofloxacin (OFL), flumequine (FLU), norfloxacin (NOR), and enrofloxacin (ENR) were higher than other QNs. The ∑QN concentration in all species was 11.3-321 ng/g dw. The TMFs for ENR and NOR were trophic magnification, while for FLU/OFL it was trophic dilution. The PBCS showed spatial-temporal variation, with a range of 0.6977-0.7910. The TMFs of ENR, FLU, and OFL were significantly positively correlated with PBCS. Phytoplankton and macrophyte biomasses showed indirect impact on the TMFs of QNs by directly influencing the PBCS. Therefore, the PBCS was the direct influencing factor for the TMFs of chemicals.

Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is a common postharvest fungal disease in fruit and vegetables. The prevention and treatment of postharvest gray mold has been one of the hot research issues addressed by researchers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of L-methionine and L-arginine on Botrytis cinerea in vitro and on cherry tomato fruit. The results of the in vitro experiment showed that L-methionine and L-arginine had significant inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth and spore germination of Botrytis cinerea, and the inhibitory effects were enhanced with increasing L-methionine or L-arginine concentration. In addition, L-methionine and L-arginine treatment increased the leakage of Botrytis cinerea electrolytes, proteins and nucleic acids. The experiment involving propidium iodide staining and malondialdehyde content assay also confirmed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatment could lead to cell membrane rupture and lipid peroxidation. The results of scanning electron microscopy further verified that the morphology of hyphae was damaged, deformed, dented and wrinkled after treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine. Fruit inoculation experiments displayed that L-methionine and L-arginine treatments significantly inhibited the occurrence and development of gray mold in postharvest cherry tomato. Therefore, treatment with L-methionine or L-arginine might be an effective means to control postharvest gray mold in fruit and vegetables.

Traditional petroleum-based food-packaging materials have poor permeability, limited active packaging properties, and difficulty in biodegradation, limiting their application. We developed a carboxymethylated tamarind seed polysaccharide composite film incorporated with ε-polylysine (CTPε) for better application in fresh-cut agricultural products. The CTPε films exhibit excellent water vapor barrier properties, but the mechanical properties are slightly reduced. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra indicate the formation of hydrogen bonds between ε-PL and CTP, leading to their internal reorganization and dense network structure. With the increase of ε-PL concentration, composite films showed notable inhibition of postharvest pathogenic fungi and bacteria, a significant enhancement of 2,2'- azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical-scavenging activity, and gradual improvement of wettability performance. Cytotoxicity experiments confirmed the favorable biocompatibility when ε-PL was added at 0.3% (CTPε2). In fresh-cut bell pepper preservation experiments, the CTPε2 coating effectively delayed weight loss and malondialdehyde increase preserved the hardness, color, and nutrients of fresh-cut peppers and prolonged the shelf life of the fresh-cut peppers, as compared with the control group. Therefore, CTPε composite films are expected to be a valuable packaging material for extending the shelf life of freshly cut agricultural products.

Supramolecular organic frameworks have been widely applied for biological detection and drug delivery. In this study, a supramolecular organic framework (SOF) is constructed through the self-assembly of a highly photosensitive triarylphosphine oxide guest molecule, OTPP-6-Methyl, with cucurbit [8] uril (CB [8]). The formation of the SOF gradually enhances the weak fluorescence of OTPP-6-Methyl owing to the restriction of the molecular folding motion. Although the high positive charge of OTPP-6-Methyl facilitates binding to various negatively charged substances, the SOF system only demonstrated an obvious fluorescence response to LPA, a biomarker of ovarian cancer, via the disassembly of SOF and subsequent binding of OTPP-6-Methyl with LPA. The fluorescence changes during the entire process are insufficient to allow the sensitive detection of LPA; thus, we further designed a FRET system by introducing Cy5, which can act as an energy receptor to achieve a ratiometric readout for LPA. The tumor-targeting cRGD group was introduced into the SOF system as part of another guest molecule, OTPP-5-M-1-cRGD, to improve the tumor-targeting ability of the SOF system. The SOF system further improves the photosensitivity of guest molecules, and is therefore used in the in vivo imaging of ovarian cancer subcutaneous tumors and as a DDS for loading DOX for the combined in vivo chemotherapy and photodynamic treatment of tumors.

Rivers are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, most current studies have focused on the temporal and spatial distribution, and data on the differences in the species and abundance of ARGs between urban and rural rivers is still lacking for certain areas. In view of this, two rural rivers and three urban rivers were selected in Shijiazhuang City. In both December 2020 and April 2021, sediments were collected at 15 sampling sites. Metagenomic sequencing technology was used to compare the differences in temporal-spatial variation for ARGs in sediments. The results showed that:① 162 and 79 ARGs were detected in urban (4 776 ±4 452) and rural rivers (1 043 ±632), respectively. The abundance and species of ARGs in urban rivers were higher than those in rural rivers. ② The relative abundances of sulfonamide (SAs,27 %), aminoglycoside (AGs,26 %), and multidrug (MDs,15 %) ARGs had the highest abundance in urban rivers, whereas the relative abundance of MDs ARGs was highest in rural rivers (65 %). On the whole, the complexity of ARGs in urban rivers was higher than that in rural rivers. ③ There was a significant positive correlation between SAs, AGs, MDs, tetracycline, phenicol, macrolides-lincosamids-streptogramins (MLS), ß-lactams, and diaminopyrimidine ARGs in urban rivers (P < 0.01); however, there was a significant negative correlation between glycopeptide ARGs and all types of ARGs (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). There was a significant positive correlation between MDs and SAs ARGs in rural rivers (P < 0.05), but there was a significant negative correlation between amino aminocoumarin, peptide, rifamycin, and fosfomycin ARGs (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). ④ For the temporal variation in urban rivers, 162 ARGs (4 776 ±4 452) and 148 ARGs (5 673 ±5 626) were detected in December and April, respectively. For the temporal variation in rural rivers, 79 species (1 043 ±632) and 46 species (467 ±183) were detected in December and April, respectively. ⑤ RDA analysis results showed that the spatial-temporal distributions of ARGs in urban and rural rivers were different. Correlation analysis showed that the ARGs in urban rivers were significantly correlated with the number of industrial enterprises, whereas the ARGs in rural rivers were significantly correlated with the output value of animal husbandry. In general, this study identified the main influencing factors for ARGs in different rivers and provided data support for ARGs risk management in different rivers.

Microbial communities play an important role in water quality regulation and biogeochemical cycles in lakes, and their community structure and function are affected by environmental factors. Therein, antibiotics affect the abundance, diversity, composition, and function of microbial communities. In this study, Baiyangdian Lake was selected as the study area. Sediment samples of 16 sites were collected in August 2018 and April 2019, respectively. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine the content of typical antibiotics-quinolones (QNs) in sediment. Through high-throughput sequencing technology, the structure and function of microbial communities was analyzed in the sediments to explore the spatiotemporal variation. Thereinto, redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to identify the key influencing factors of spatiotemporal variation of microbial communities. The results showed that: ① From August to April, the average ω(QNs) showed an increasing trend, and its mean value changed from 3.91 ng·g-1 to 6.34 ng·g-1, with significant seasonal differences in oxolinic acid (OXO) and total QNs content (P < 0.05). ② In terms of temporal variation, the dominant bacteria were Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria showed a decreasing trend, whereas Chloroflexi showed an increasing trend; at the genus level, the dominant bacteria genera in August were norank_ f__Anaerolineaceae and Thiobacilus, and the dominant bacteria genera in April were Acinetobacter and norank_ f_Anaerolineaceae, and the dominant bacteria genera had significant seasonal differences (P < 0.05). ③ In terms of temporal variation, the index of Simpson, Chao, Ace, and OTU number all showed an increasing trend, and the seasonal differences were significant (P < 0.05). ④ In terms of spatial variation, there were no significant spatial differences among functional genes of COG. In terms of temporal variation, there were significant seasonal differences in functional genes of energy production and conversion, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, transcription, cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis, and signal transduction mechanisms (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). ⑤ Microbial community structure and functional genes were significantly correlated with QNs (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05), and QNs were the main influencing factors. Therefore, QNs were the main factor affecting the changes in microbial community structure and functional genes in sediments of Baiyangdian Lake. Thus, comprehensive control of antibiotic pollution in sediments should be further strengthened.

Tigecycline, one of the last-resort therapeutic options for complicated infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens, especially carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales and Acinetobacter in recent years. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes has threatened the effectiveness of antibiotics and public health with the excessive use of antibiotics in clinics. However, the emergence and dissemination of high-level mobile tigecycline-resistance gene tet(X) is challenging for clinical effectiveness of antimicrobial agent. This study aimed to characterize an E. coli strain T43, isolated from an inpatient in a teaching hospital in China. The E. coli T43 was resistant to almost all antimicrobials except colistin and consisted of a 4,774,080 bp chromosome and three plasmids. Plasmids pT43-1 and pT43-2 contained tigecycline-resistance gene tet(X4). Plasmid pT43-1 had a size of 152,423 bp with 51.05% GC content and harbored 151 putative open reading frames. pT43-1 was the largest plasmid in strain T43 and carried numerous resistance genes, especially tigecycline resistance gene tet(X4) and carbapenemase resistance gene blaNDM-5. The tet(X) gene was associated with IS26. Co-occurrence of numerous resistance genes in a single plasmid possibly contributed to the dissemination of these genes under antibiotics stress. It might explain the presence of clinically crucial resistance genes tet(X) and blaNDM-5 in clinics. This study suggested the applicable use of antibiotics and continued surveillance of tet(X) and blaNDM-5 in clinics are imperative.

RESUMO

Functional coatings, including organic and inorganic coatings, play a vital role in various industries by providing a protective layer and introducing unique functionalities. However, its design often involves time-consuming experimentation with multiple materials and processing parameters. To overcome these limitations, data-driven approaches are gaining traction in materials science. In this paper, recent advances in data-driven materials research and development (R&D) for functional coatings, highlighting the importance, data sources, working processes, and applications of this paradigm are summarized. It is begun by discussing the challenges of traditional methods, then introduce typical data-driven processes. It is demonstrated how data-driven approaches enable the identification of correlations between input parameters and coating performance, thus allowing for efficient prediction and design. Furthermore, carefully selected case studies are presented across diverse industries that exemplify the effectiveness of data-driven methods in accelerating the discovery of new functional coatings with tailored properties. Finally, the emerging research directions, involving integrating advanced techniques and data from different sources, are addressed. Overall, this review provides an overview of data-driven materials R&D for functional coatings, shedding light on its potential and future developments.

Background: Previous studies have confirmed that malignant transformation of dysplastic nodule (DN) into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is accompanied by reduction of iron content in nodules. This pathological abnormality can serve as the basis for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study was designed to identify the feasibility of iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least squares estimation-iron quantitative (IDEAL-IQ) measurement to distinguish early hepatocellular carcinoma (eHCC) from DN. Methods: We reviewed MRI studies of 35 eHCC and 23 DN lesions (46 participants with 58 lesions total, 37 males, 9 females, 31-80 years old). The exams include IDEAL-IQ sequence and 3.0T MR conventional scan [including T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and Gadopentic acid (Gd-GDPA)-enhanced]. Then, 3 readers independently diagnosed eHCC, DN, or were unable to distinguish eHCC from DN using conventional MRI (CMRI), and then assessed R2* value of nodules [R2* value represents the nodule iron content (NIC)] and R2* value of liver background [R2* value represents the liver background iron content (LBIC)] with IDEAL-IQ. Statistical analysis was conducted using the t-test for comparison of means, the Mann-Whitney test for comparison of medians, the chi-square test for comparison of frequencies, and diagnostic efficacy was evaluated by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: This study evaluated 35 eHCC participants (17 males, 6 females, 34-81 years old, nodule size: 10.5-27.6 mm, median 18.0 mm) and 23 DN participants (20 males, 3 females, 31-76 years old, nodule size: 16.30±4.095 mm). The NIC and ratio of NIC to LIBC (NIC/LBIC) of the eHCC group (35.926±12.806 sec-1, 0.327±0.107) was lower than that of the DN group (176.635±87.686 sec-1, 1.799±0.629) (P<0.001). Using NIC and NIC/LBIC to distinguish eHCC from DN, the true positive/false positive rates were 91.3%/94.3% and 87.0%/97.1%, respectively. The rates of CMRI, NIC and NIC/LBIC in diagnosis of eHCC were 77.1%, and 94.3%, 97.1%, respectively, and those of DN were 65.2%, 91.3%, and 87.0%, respectively. The diagnosis rate of eHCC and DN by CMRI was lower than that of NIC and NIC/LBIC (eHCC: P=0.03, 0.04, DN: P=0.02, 0.04). Conclusions: Using IDEAL-IQ measurement can distinguish DN from eHCC.

Fusion of multimodal medical data provides multifaceted, disease-relevant information for diagnosis or prognosis prediction modeling. Traditional fusion strategies such as feature concatenation often fail to learn hidden complementary and discriminative manifestations from high-dimensional multimodal data. To this end, we proposed a methodology for the integration of multimodality medical data by matching their moments in a latent space, where the hidden, shared information of multimodal data is gradually learned by optimization with multiple feature collinearity and correlation constrains. We first obtained the multimodal hidden representations by learning mappings between the original domain and shared latent space. Within this shared space, we utilized several relational regularizations, including data attribute preservation, feature collinearity and feature-task correlation, to encourage learning of the underlying associations inherent in multimodal data. The fused multimodal latent features were finally fed to a logistic regression classifier for diagnostic prediction. Extensive evaluations on three independent clinical datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in fusing multimodal data for medical prediction modeling.

INTRODUCTION: Research has demonstrated that electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of paralyzed muscles significantly improves nerve regeneration and functional recovery. DESCRIPTION: An 81-year-old man with no history of diabetes mellitus or hypertension presented with a history of brainstem infarction. Initially, the patient had medial rectus palsy in the left eye and diplopia to the right in both eyes, which almost returned to normal after six sessions of EA. METHODS: The CARE guidelines informed the case study report. The patient was diagnosed with oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) and photographed to document ONP recovery after treatment. The selected acupuncture points and surgical methods are listed in the table. DISCUSSION: Pharmacological treatment of oculomotor palsy is not ideal, and its long-term use has side effects. Although acupuncture is a promising treatment for ONP, existing treatments involve many acupuncture points and long cycles, resulting in poor patient compliance. We chose an innovative modality, electrical stimulation of paralyzed muscles, which may be an effective and safe complementary alternative therapy for ONP.

Klebsiella michiganensis is a recently emerging human pathogen causing nosocomial infections. This study aimed to characterize the complete genome sequence of a clinical Klebsiella michiganensis strain KMIB106 which exhibited extensive drug-resistance. The whole genome of the strain was sequenced using PacBio RS III systems and Illumina Nextseq 500. Annotation, transposable elements and resistance gene identification were analyzed by RAST, prokka and Plasmid Finder, respectively. According to the results, KMIB106 was resistant to multiple antimicrobials, including carbapenems, but it remained susceptible to aztreonam. The genome of KMIB106 consisted of a single chromosome and three predicted plasmids. Importantly, a novel KPC plasmid pB106-1 was found to carry the array of resistance genes in a highly different order in its variable regions, including mphA, msrE, mphE, ARR-3, addA16, sul1, dfrA27, tetD and fosA3. Plasmid pB106-2 is a typical IncFII plasmid with no resistant gene. Plasmid pB106-IMP consists of the IncN and IncX3 backbones, and two resistance genes, blaIMP-4 and blaSHV-12, were identified. Our study for the first time reported an extensively drug-resistant Klebsiella michiganensis strain recovered from a child with a respiratory infection in Southern China, which carries three mega plasmids, with pB106-1 firstly identified to carry an array of resistance genes in a distinctive order, and pB106-IMP identified as a novel IncN-IncX3 cointegrate plasmid harboring two resistance genes blaIMP-4 and blaSHV-12.
