RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe and compare the difference in retinal perfusion using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) between anisometropic amblyopia in children and fellow eyes as well as age-matched controls. METHODS: A total of 16 children with anisometropic amblyopia and 19 age-matched healthy subjects were enrolled. All participants underwent OCTA examination, with 3 mm × 3 mm and 6 mm × 6 mm scans in the macular region. Perfusion parameters of the superficial retinal layer were measured by built-in software, including the macular foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, perimeter and circularity, as well as the vessel length density (VLD) and perfusion density (PD) of the foveal, parafoveal and perifoveal regions. RESULTS: Among the 16 patients with anisometropic amblyopia, the FAZ area was significantly higher in diseased eyes (P = 0.027) than in fellow eyes. The VLD and PD of the foveal average and the VLD of the nasal quadrant of the perifoveal region in anisometropic amblyopic eyes were significantly lower than those in fellow eyes (P < 0.05). The VLD of the parafoveal average, the superior, temporal, inferior and nasal quadrants of the parafoveal region, and the nasal quadrant of the perifoveal region in anisometropic amblyopic eyes were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). The PD of the parafoveal average, and the inferior quadrant of the parafoveal region in anisometropic amblyopic eyes were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). The VLD of the parafoveal average, the superior, inferior and nasal quadrants of the parafoveal region, and the nasal quadrant of the perifoveal region in fellow eyes were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). The PD of the parafoveal average, and the inferior quadrant of the parafoveal region in fellow eyes were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The macular vessel density of the superficial capillary plexus is lower in anisometropic amblyopic children than in age-matched healthy children. Compared with the fellow eye, the perfusion of the amblyopic eye in children with anisometropic amblyopia also decreases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate macular microstructure alterations in the parafoveal nonperfusion areas of eyes with branch retinal vein occlusions (BRVO), and to investigate their impact on retinal sensitivity. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including thirteen BRVO patients with parafoveal capillary nonperfusion areas (NPA). Multiple modalities including microperimetry, optical coherence tomography angiography, and optical coherence tomography were performed to measure retinal sensitivity and thickness, and to identify the microstructure changes and perfusion status. RESULTS: The retinal sensitivity and thickness in the NPA were significantly lower than those in the perfusion areas (PA) (P = 0.001, P = 0.003). Microstructure changes, including disorganization of the retinal inner layers (DRIL), disruption of the outer retinal layers, and cysts were more frequently observed in NPA (P = 0.002, P = 0.018, P = 0.068). Within NPA, the retinal sensitivity of areas with DRIL, and outer retinal layers disruption was significantly lower than that of the areas without DRIL (P = 0.016), and with intact outer retinal layers (P < 0.001), respectively. 1dB increase in retinal sensitivity was correlated with 2.2 µm (95 % confidence interval, 1.71-2.7) increase of the thickness (P < 0.001). The retinal sensitivity was significantly lower at points with both DRIL and outer retinal layers disruption than at the points with DRIL or outer retina layers disruption alone (P = 0.001, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Alterations in the macular microstructure are associated with ischemia, especially DRIL. DRIL and outer retinal layers disruption are imaging features that have important implications for local retinal sensitivity in the ischemic areas, and where the microstructure of both inner and outer retinal layers is disrupted the function is further destructed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe and compare the difference in retinal thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) between patients with high myopia (HM) during the third trimester of pregnancy and age-matched HM non-pregnant women. METHODS: A case-control study. A total of 39 eyes from 39 HM women in the third trimester (study group) and 50 eyes of 50 age-matched non-pregnant women with HM (control group) were included. All subjects underwent SD-OCT examination. The built-in software was used to measure the retinal thickness in macular region. The data from two groups were compared using independent-samples t test. RESULTS: Among the 89 subjects in this study, the mean gestational age of the study group was 35.09 ± 2.44 weeks, and the average age was 32.24 ± 3.75 years. The average age of the control group was 34.04 ± 7.19 years old. Compared with the control group, the average thickness of parafoveal area, and the average thickness of parafoveal superior, inferior, temporal quadrants of the superficial retina and the average thickness of the foveal and parafoveal of the superficial retina were significantly decreased in the study group (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the average thickness of all quadrants of the retina in the parafoveal area except the nasal quadrant were significantly decreased in the study group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, the retinal thickness of patients with high myopia during the third trimester of pregnancy was thinner than that of non-pregnant women with age-matched high myopia.
