OBJECTIVES: The prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV has been a global success. But little is known about the growth parameters of infants delivered by mothers with HIV or the drug resistance of infants with HIV in China. The study aimed to assess growth parameters and drug resistance in Chinese infants exposed to HIV. METHODS: We conducted an 18-month longitudinal follow-up study of 3283 infants (3222 without HIV; 61 with HIV) born to mothers with HIV in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between January 2015 and December 2021. The weight and length of all participants was recorded. In addition, genetic subtypes and drug resistance analysis were performed for infants with HIV. RESULTS: Compared with infants without HIV, those with HIV had significantly lower weight/length Z-scores, except at 18 months of age. The length/age Z-scores of infants with HIV was significantly reduced, except at 1 month of age. The weight/age Z-scores of infants with HIV were significantly lower at all follow-up time points. The weight/length Z-scores of male infants without HIV were significantly lower than for female infants without HIV at all follow-up time points. Male infants without HIV had lower length/age and weight/age Z-scores than female infants at the remaining follow-up points, except at 1 month of age. Of a total of 61 infants with HIV, subtype and drug-resistance data were obtained from 37 (60.66%) samples. Infants with HIV were dominated by the CRF01_AE genotype and showed a diversity of mutation sites dominated by non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor resistance. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates the growth of infants exposed to HIV in southwest China and provides detailed information on subtype distribution and drug resistance of those with HIV. Nutritional support and drug-resistance surveillance for infants exposed to HIV need to be strengthened.

ConspectusDesigning bright and efficient near-infrared (NIR) emitters has drawn much attention due to numerous applications ranging from biological imaging, medical therapy, optical communication, and night-vision devices. However, polyatomic organic and organometallic molecules with energy gaps close to the deep red and NIR regime are subject to dominant nonradiative internal conversion (IC) processes, which drastically reduces the emission intensity and exciton diffusion length of organic materials and hence hampers the optoelectronic performances. To suppress nonradiative IC rates, we suggested two complementary approaches to solve the issues: exciton delocalization and molecular deuteration. First, exciton delocalization efficiently suppresses the molecular reorganization energy through partitioning to all aggregated molecules. According to the IC theory together with the effect of exciton delocalization, the simulated nonradiative rates with the energy gap ΔE = 104 cm-1 decrease by around 104 fold when the exciton delocalization length equals 5 (promoting vibronic frequency ωl = 1500 cm-1). Second, molecular deuterations reduce Franck-Condon vibrational overlaps and vibrational frequencies of promoting modes, which decreases IC rates by 1 order of magnitude in comparison to the rates of nondeuterated molecules under ΔE of 104 cm-1. Although deuteration of molecules has long been attempted to increase emission intensity, the results have been mixed. Here, we provide a robust derivation of the IC theory to demonstrate its validity, especially to emission in the NIR region.The concepts are experimentally verified by the strategic design and synthesis of a class of square-planar Pt(II) complexes, which form crystalline aggregates in vapor deposited thin films. The packing geometries are well characterized by the grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GIXD), showing domino-like packing arrangements with the short ππ separation of 3.4-3.7 Å. Upon photoexcitation, such closely packed assemblies exhibit intense NIR emission maximized in the 740-970 nm region through metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) transition with unprecedented photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 8-82%. To validate the existence of exciton delocalization, we applied time-resolved step-scan Fourier transform UV-vis spectroscopy to probe the exciton delocalization length of Pt(II) aggregates, which is 5-9 molecules (2.1-4.5 nm) assuming that excitons mainly delocalized along the direction of ππ stacking. According to the dependence of delocalization length vs simulated IC rates, we verify that the observed delocalization lengths contribute to the high NIR PLQY of the aggregated Pt(II) complexes. To probe the isotope effect, both partially and completely deuterated Pt(II) complexes were synthesized. For the case of the 970 nm Pt(II) emitter, the vapor deposited films of per-deuterated Pt(II) complexes exhibit the same emission peak as that of the nondeuterated one, whereas PLQY increases ∼50%. To put the fundamental studies into practice, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated with a variety of NIR Pt(II) complexes as the emitting layer, showing the outstanding external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 2-25% and the remarkable radiances 10-40 W sr-1 m-2 at 740-1002 nm. The prominent device performances not only successfully prove our designed concept but also reach a new milestone for highly efficient NIR OLED devices.This Account thus summarizes our approaches about how to boost the efficiency of the NIR emission of organic molecules from an in-depth fundamental basis, i.e., molecular design, photophysical characterization, and device fabrication. The concept of the exciton delocalization and molecular deuteration may also be applicable to a single molecular system to achieve efficient NIR radiance, which is worth further investigation in the future.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a crucial noncontact full-field optical measurement method used in various fields. However, in practical applications, DIC is affected by systematic and random noises, leading to experimental resolutions lower than theoretical ones. In this study, we proposed a laser Doppler vibrometer guided DIC to perform vibration measurements. 3D-DIC obtains a sequence of out of displacement field initially. A three-dimensional frequency domain collaborative filtering (3D-FDCF) method that utilizes Laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) single-point data to assist in processing of the displacement field sequence pixel-wise is adopted. The 3D-FDCF method combines lowpass filtering in the spatial frequency domain with LDV-guided bandpass filtering in the temporal frequency domain. The effectiveness of the 3D-FDCF method is demonstrated through a comparison among DIC data, the filtered DIC data, and continuously scanning LDV data. The experiment results demonstrate the 3D-FDCF method's capability in measuring vibration amplitudes of several hundred nanometers with the size of a test sample of about 100 mm × 100 mm, supporting the statement of interferometric scale full-field vibration measurement by DIC with the guidance of the LDV data.

BACKGROUND: The potential health effects of taxing sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has been insufficiently examined in Asian contexts. This study aimed to assess the impact of SSB taxation on the prevalence of obesity/overweight and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Hong Kong using a willingness-to-pay (WTP) survey and simulation analysis. METHODS: A random telephone survey was conducted with 1000 adults from May to June 2020. We used a contingent valuation approach to assess individuals' WTP for SSBs under four tax payment scenarios (5%, 10%, 40%, and 50% of the current market price). Based on the WTP, a simulation analysis was conducted to project changes in SSB purchase and associated reductions in the prevalence of obesity/overweight and T2DM over a 10-year simulation period. FINDINGS: When 5% and 10% taxation rates were introduced, approximately one-third of the population were unwilling to maintain their SSB purchase. Our simulation demonstrated a gradual decline in the prevalence of obesity/overweight and diabetes with a more pronounced decrease when higher taxation rates were introduced. 10% taxation resulted in a mean reduction of 1532.7 cases of overweight/obesity per 100 thousand population at the sixth year, while T2DM prevalence decreased by 267.1 (0.3%). CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the effects of an SSB tax on purchase behaviors and health outcomes in an affluent Asia setting, with a more pronounced influence on adult population. These findings are expected to inform policymakers in making decisions regarding an effective and equitable tax rate on SSBs.

Trophoblast cell syncytialization is essential for placental and fetal development. Abnormal trophoblast cell fusion leads to pregnancy pathologies, such as preeclampsia (PE), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and miscarriage. 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) is the most abundant oxysterol in human peripheral blood synthesized by sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1) and is considered a critical mediator between hypercholesterolemia and a variety of related disorders. Gestational hypercholesterolemia was associated with spontaneous preterm delivery and low birth weight (LBW) in term infants, yet the mechanism is unclear. In this study, two trophoblast cell models and CD-1 mice were used to evaluate the effects of 27-OHC on trophoblast fusion during placenta development. Two different kinds of trophoblast cells received a dosage of 2.5, 5, or 10 uM 27-OHC. Three groups of pregnant mice were randomly assigned: control, full treatment (E0.5-E17.5), or late treatment (E13.5-E17.5). All mice received daily intraperitoneal injections of saline (control group) and 27-OHC (treatment group; 5.5 mg/kg). In vitro experiments, we found that 27-OHC inhibited trophoblast cell fusion in primary human trophoblasts (PHT) and forskolin (FSK)-induced BeWo cells. 27-OHC up-regulated the expression of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway-related proteins. Moreover, the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 rescued the inhibitory effect of 27-OHC. Inhibition of trophoblast cell fusion by 27-OHC was also observed in CD-1 mice. Furthermore, fetal weight and placental efficiency decreased and fetal blood vessel development was inhibited in pregnant mice treated with 27-OHC. This study was the first to prove that 27-OHC inhibits trophoblast cell fusion by Activating PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. This study reveals a novel mechanism by which dyslipidemia during pregnancy results in adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is a prevalent childhood acute illness, with 13.6 million pediatric office visits annually, often stemming from upper respiratory tract infections (URI) and affected by environmental factors like air pollution and cold seasons. METHODS: Herein, we made use of territory-wide hospitalization data to investigate the relationships between meteorological factors, air pollutants, influenza infection, and AOM for children observed from 1998 to 2019 in Hong Kong. Quasi-Poisson generalized additive model, combined with a distributed-lag non-linear model, was employed to examine the relationship between weekly AOM admissions in children and weekly influenza-like illness-positive (ILI +) rates, as well as air pollutants (i.e., oxidant gases, sulfur dioxide, and fine particulate matter), while accounting for meteorological variations. RESULTS: There were 21,224 hospital admissions due to AOM for children aged ≤ 15 years throughout a 22-year period. The cumulative adjusted relative risks (ARR) of AOM were 1.15 (95% CI, 1.04-1.28) and 1.07 (95% CI, 0.97-1.18) at the 95th percentile concentration of oxidant gases (65.9 ppm) and fine particulate matter (62.2 µg/m3) respectively, with reference set to their medians of concentration. The ARRs exhibited a monotone increasing trend for all-type and type-specific ILI + rates. Setting the reference to zero, the cumulative ARRs of AOM rose to 1.42 (95% CI, 1.29-1.56) at the 95th percentile of ILI + Total rate, and to 1.07 (95% CI, 1.01-1.14), 1.19 (95% CI, 1.11-1.27), and 1.22 (95% CI, 1.13-1.32) for ILI + A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and B, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested that policy on air pollution control and influenza vaccination for children need to be implemented, which might have significant implications for preventing AOM in children.

Febrile seizures are convulsions predominately occurring in young children. The effects of various exposomes, including influenza infection and external environmental factors, on febrile seizures have not been well-studied. In this study, we elucidated the relationships between ambient temperature, air pollutants, influenza infection, and febrile seizures using 22-year territory-wide hospitalization data in Hong Kong. The aggregated data were matched with the meteorological records and air pollutant concentrations. All-type and type-specific influenza-like illness positive (ILI+) rates were used as proxies for influenza activity. Distributed lag non-linear model in conjunction with the quasi-poisson generalized additive model was used to examine the associations of interest. According to the results, all-type influenza infections were significantly associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for febrile seizures (cumulative adjusted relative risk [ARR] = 1.59 at 95th percentile vs. 0; 95% CI, 1.51-1.68). The effect of ILI + A/H3N2 on febrile seizure was more pronounced than other type-specific ILI + rates. A low mean ambient temperature was identified as a significant risk factor for febrile seizures (cumulative ARR = 1.50 at 5th percentile vs. median; 95% CI, 1.35-1.66), while the redox-weighted oxidant capacity and sulfur dioxide were not associated with febrile seizures. In conclusion, our study underscores that influenza infections and exposure to cold conditions were related to an increased risk of febrile seizures in children. Thus, we advocate for influenza vaccination before the onset of the cold season for children to mitigate the burden of febrile seizures.

Previous studies have shown that nuclear binding protein 2 (NUCB2) is expressed in the human placenta and increases with an increase in the syncytialization of trophoblast cells. This study aimed to investigate the role of NUCB2 in the differentiation and fusion of trophectoderm cells. In this study, the expression levels of NUCB2 and E-cadherin in the placentas of rats at different gestation stages were investigated. The results showed that there was an opposite trend between the expression of placental NUCB2 and E-cadherin in rat placentas in different trimesters. When primary human trophoblast (PHT) and BeWo cells were treated with high concentrations of Nesfatin-1, the trophoblast cell syncytialization was significantly inhibited. The effects of NUCB2 knockdown in BeWo cells and Forskolin-induced syncytialization were investigated. These cells showed a significantly decreased cell fusion rate. The mechanism underlying NUCB2-regulated trophoblast cell syncytialization was explored using RNA-Seq and the results indicated that the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-phospholipase C gamma 1 (PLCG1)-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV (CAMK4) pathway might be involved. The results suggested that the placental expression of NUCB2 plays an important role in the fusion of trophoblasts during differentiation via the EGFR-PLCG1-CAMK4 pathway.

Singlet fission (SF) holds great promise for current photovoltaic technologies, where tetracenes, with their relatively high triplet energies, play a major role for application in silicon-based solar cells. However, the SF efficiencies in tetracene dimers are low due to the unfavorable energetics of their singlet and triplet energy levels. In the solid state, tetracene exhibits high yields of triplet formation through SF, raising great interest about the underlying mechanisms. To address this discrepancy, we designed and prepared a novel molecular system based on a hexaphenylbenzene core decorated with 2 to 6 tetracene chromophores. The spatial arrangement of tetracene units, induced by steric hindrance in the central part, dictates through-space coupling, making it a relevant model for solid-state chromophore organization. We then revealed a remarkable increase in SF quantum yield with the number of tetracenes, reaching quantitative (196 %) triplet pair formation in hexamer. We observed a short-lived correlated triplet pair and limited magnetic effects, indicating ineffective triplet dissociation in these through-space coupled systems. These findings emphasize the crucial role of the number of chromophores involved and the interchromophore arrangement for the SF efficiency. The insights gained from this study will aid designing more efficient and technology-compatible SF systems for applications in photovoltaics.

In January 2022, the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants initiated major outbreaks and dominated the transmissions in Hong Kong, displacing an earlier outbreak seeded by the Delta variants. To provide insight into the transmission potential of the emerging variants, we aimed to compare the epidemiological characteristics of the Omicron and Delta variants. We analyzed the line-list clinical and contact tracing data of the SARS-CoV-2 confirmed cases in Hong Kong. Transmission pairs were constructed based on the individual contact history. We fitted bias-controlled models to the data to estimate the serial interval, incubation period and infectiousness profile of the two variants. Viral load data were extracted and fitted to the random effect models to investigate the potential risk modifiers for the clinical viral shedding course. Totally 14 401 confirmed cases were reported between January 1 and February 15, 2022. The estimated mean serial interval (4.4 days vs. 5.8 days) and incubation period (3.4 days vs. 3.8 days) were shorter for the Omicron than the Delta variants. A larger proportion of presymptomatic transmission was observed for the Omicron (62%) compared to the Delta variants (48%). The Omicron cases had higher mean viral load over an infection course than the Delta cases, with the elder cases appearing more infectious than the younger cases for both variants. The epidemiological features of Omicron variants were likely an obstacle to contact tracing measures, imposed as a major intervention in settings like Hong Kong. Continuously monitoring the epidemiological feature for any emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants in the future is needed to assist officials in planning measures for COVID-19 control.

Investigations of simple and accurate meteorology classification systems for influenza epidemics, particularly in subtropical regions, are limited. To assist in preparing for potential upsurges in the demand on healthcare facilities during influenza seasons, our study aims to develop a set of meteorologically-favorable zones for epidemics of influenza A and B, defined as the intervals of meteorological variables with prediction performance optimized. We collected weekly detection rates of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases from four local major hospitals in Hong Kong between 2004 and 2019. Meteorological and air quality records for hospitals were collected from their closest monitoring stations. We employed classification and regression trees to identify zones that optimize the prediction performance of meteorological data in influenza epidemics, defined as a weekly rate > 50th percentile over a year. According to the results, a combination of temperature > 25.1℃ and relative humidity > 79% was favorable to epidemics in hot seasons, whereas either temperature < 16.4℃ or a combination of < 20.4℃ and relative humidity > 76% was favorable to epidemics in cold seasons. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) in model training achieved 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.76-0.83) and was kept at 0.71 (95%CI, 0.65-0.77) in validation. The meteorologically-favorable zones for predicting influenza A or A and B epidemics together were similar, but the AUC for predicting influenza B epidemics was comparatively lower. In conclusion, we established meteorologically-favorable zones for influenza A and B epidemics with a satisfactory prediction performance, even though the influenza seasonality in this subtropical setting was weak and type-specific.

PURPOSE: To establish and validate a multiparameter prediction model for early recurrence after radical resection in patients diagnosed with combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study reviewed the clinical characteristics and preoperative CT images of 143 cHCC-CC patients who underwent radical resection from three institutions. A total of 110 patients from institution 1 were randomly divided into training set (n = 78) and testing set (n = 32) in the ratio of 7-3. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to construct a nomogram prediction model in the training set, which was internally and externally validated in the testing set and the validation set (n = 33) from institutions 2 and 3. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristics (ROC), decision curve analysis (DCA), and calibration analysis were used to evaluate the model's performance. RESULTS: The combined model demonstrated superior predictive performance compared to the clinical model, the CT model, the pathological model and the clinic-CT model in predicting the early postoperative recurrence. The nomogram based on the combined model included AST, ALP, tumor size, tumor margin, arterial phase peritumoral enhancement, and MVI (Microvascular invasion). The model had AUCs of 0.89 (95% CI 0.81-0.96), 0.85 (95% CI 0.70-0.99), and 0.86 (95% CI 0.72-1.00) in the training, testing, and validation sets, respectively, indicating high predictive power. DCA showed that the combined model had good clinical value and correction effect. CONCLUSION: A nomogram incorporating clinical characteristics and preoperative CT features can be utilized to effectively predict the early postoperative recurrence in patients with cHCC-CC.

In this study, we explored the association between physiological and perceptual heat strain while wearing stab-resistant body armor (SRBA). Human trials were performed on ten participants in warm and hot environments. Physiological responses (core temperature, skin temperature, and heart rate), and perceptual responses (thermal sensation vote, thermal comfort vote, restriction of perceived exertion (RPE), wetness of skin, and wetness of clothing) were recorded throughout the trials, and subsequently, the physiological strain index (PSI), and perceptual strain index (PeSI) were calculated. The results indicated that the PeSI showed a significant moderate association with the PSI, and was capable of predicting PSI for low (PSI = 3) and high (PSI = 7) levels of physiological strain with the areas under the curves of 0.80 and 0.64, respectively. Moreover, Bland-Altman analysis indicated that the majority of the PSI ranged within the 95% confidence interval, and the mean difference between PSI and PeSI was 0.14 ± 2.02 with the lower 95% limit and upper 95% limit being -3.82 to 4.10, respectively. Therefore, the subjective responses could be used as an indicator for predicting physiological strain while wearing SRBA. This study could provide fundamental knowledge for the usage of SRBA, and the development of physiological heat strain assessment.

A Pr-doped p-Cu2O thin film was prepared on indium tin oxide conductive glass by electrochemical deposition; the effect of Pr doping on the structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of p-Cu2O was investigated. The results show that with the increase in Pr doping amount, the particle size of p-Cu2O increases, the absorption boundary redshifts, and the band-gap width decreases. Pr doping increases the flat band potential and carrier concentration of p-Cu2O; when the doping amount is 1.2 mM, the carrier concentration reaches 1.14 × 1024 cm-3. Compared with pure p-Cu2O, the charge transfer resistance of Pr-doped p-Cu2O decreases and the photocurrent and open circuit voltage increase, indicating that the carrier transfer rate is accelerated, and the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes is effectively improved. The result of a norfloxacin photocatalytic degradation experiment showed that the degradation rate of norfloxacin increased from 52.3% to 76.2% and Pr doping effectively improved the photocatalytic performance of p-Cu2O. The main reasons for enhancing the photocatalytic performance are that the band gap of Pr-doped p-Cu2O decreases, the Fermi level of Cu2O is closer to the valence band position, the hole concentration near the valence band, and the oxidation capacity increases, and more h+ oxidize norfloxacin molecules. In addition, the Pr in Pr-Cu2O acts as a conductor to guide electrons on the guide band to the crystal surface, which increases the contact between photogenerated electrons and dissolved oxygen, which is conducive to the formation of the active species ·O2- and can effectively reduce the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In the process of photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin, the main active species are ·O2-, ·OH, and h+, which play auxiliary roles. TOC tests show that the norfloxacin molecules can be effectively degraded into small molecule organic matter, CO2, and H2O in the presence of Pr-doped p-Cu2O.

The exploration of deactivation mechanisms for near-infrared(NIR)-emissive organic molecules has been a key issue in chemistry, materials science and molecular biology. In this study, based on transient absorption spectroscopy and transient grating photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the aggregated PtII complex 4H (efficient NIR emitter) exhibits collective out-of-plane motions with a frequency of 32 cm-1 (0.96 THz) in the excited states. Importantly, similar THz characteristics were also observed in analogous PtII complexes with prominent NIR emission efficiency. The conservation of THz motions enables excited-state deactivation to proceed along low-frequency vibrational coordinates, contributing to the suppression of nonradiative decay and remarkable NIR emission. These novel results highlight the significance of excited-state vibrations in nonradiative processes, which serve as a benchmark for improving device performance.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices have been found effective in training ankle control in patients with neurological diseases. However, the neural mechanisms associated with using wearable devices for ankle training remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the ankle tracking performance and brain white matter changes associated with ankle tracking learning using a wearable-device system and the behavior-brain structure relationships in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: Twenty-six middle-aged and older adults (48-75 years) participated in this study. Participants underwent 5-day ankle tracking learning with their non-dominant foot using a custom-built ankle tracking system equipped with a wearable sensor and a sensor-computer interface for real-time visual feedback and data acquisition. Repeated and random sequences of target tracking trajectories were both used for learning and testing. Ankle tracking performance, calculated as the root-mean-squared-error (RMSE) between the target and actual ankle trajectories, and brain diffusion spectrum MR images were acquired at baseline and retention tests. The general fractional anisotropy (GFA) values of eight brain white matter tracts of interest were calculated to indicate their integrity. Two-way (Sex × Time) mixed repeated measures ANOVA procedures were used to investigate Sex and Time effects on RMSE and GFA. Correlations between changes in RMSE and those in GFA were analyzed, controlling for age and sex. RESULTS: After learning, both male and female participants reduced the RMSE of tracking repeated and random sequences (both p < 0.001). Among the eight fiber tracts, the right superior longitudinal fasciculus II (R SLF II) was the only one which showed both increased GFA (p = 0.039) after learning and predictive power of reductions in RMSE for random sequence tracking with its changes in GFA [ß = 0.514, R2 change = 0.259, p = 0.008]. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings implied that interactive tracking movement learning using wearable sensors may place high demands on the attention, sensory feedback integration, and sensorimotor transformation functions of the brain. Therefore, the SLF II, which is known to perform these brain functions, showed corresponding neural plasticity after such learning, and its plasticity also predicted the behavioral gains. The SLF II appears to be a very important anatomical neural correlate involved in such learning paradigms.

In the last two decades, machine learning (ML) methods have been widely used in digital soil mapping (DSM), but the regression kriging (RK) model which combines the advantages of the ML and kriging methods has rarely been used in DSM. In addition, due to the limitation of a single-model structure, many ML methods have poor prediction accuracy in undulating terrain areas. In this study, we collected the SOC content of 115 soil samples in a hilly farming area with continuous undulating terrain. According to the theory of soil-forming factors in pedogenesis, we selected 10 topographic indices, 7 vegetation indices, and 2 soil indices as environmental covariates, and according to the law of geographical similarity, we used ML and RK methods to mine the relationship between SOC and environmental covariates to predict the SOC content. Four ensemble models-random forest (RF), Cubist, stochastic gradient boosting (SGB), and Bayesian regularized neural networks (BRNNs)-were used to fit the trend of SOC content, and the simple kriging (SK) method was used to interpolate the residuals of the ensemble models, and then the SOC and residual were superimposed to obtain the RK prediction result. Moreover, the 115 samples were divided into calibration and validation sets at a ratio of 80%, and the tenfold cross-validation method was used to fit the optimal parameters of the model. From the results of four ensemble models: RF performed best in the calibration set (R2c = 0.834) but poorly in the validation set (R2v = 0.362); Cubist had good accuracy and stability in both the calibration and validation sets (R2c = 0.693 and R2v = 0.445); SGB performed poorly (R2c = 0.430 and R2v = 0.336); and BRNN had the lowest accuracy (R2c = 0.323 and R2v = 0.282). The results showed that the R2 of the four RK models in the validation set were 0.718, 0.674, 0.724, and 0.625, respectively. Compared with the ensemble models without superimposed residuals, the prediction accuracy was improved by 0.356, 0.229, 0.388, and 0.343, respectively. In conclusion, Cubist has high prediction accuracy and generalization ability in areas with complex topography, and the RK model can make full use of trends and spatial structural factors that are not easy to mine by ML models, which can effectively improve the prediction accuracy. This provides a reference for soil survey and digital mapping in complex terrain areas.

In this study, a multifunctional high-vacuum system was established to measure the electro-optical conversion efficiency of metamaterial-based thermal emitters with built-in heaters. The system is composed of an environmental control module, an electro-optical conversion measurement module, and a system control module. The system can provide air, argon, high vacuum, and other conventional testing environments, combined with humidity control. The test chamber and sample holder are carefully designed to minimize heat transfer through thermal conduction and convection. The optical power measurements are realized using the combination of a water-cooled KBr flange, an integrating sphere, and thermopile detectors. This structure is very stable and can detect light emission at the µW level. The system can synchronously detect the heating voltage, heating current, optical power, sample temperatures (both top and bottom), ambient pressure, humidity, and other environmental parameters. The comprehensive parameter detection capability enables the system to monitor subtle sample changes and perform failure mechanism analysis with the aid of offline material analysis using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the system can be used for fatigue and high-low temperature impact tests.

Gas sensing performance characterization systems are essential for the research and development of gas sensing materials and devices. Although existing systems are almost completely automatically operated, the accuracies of gas concentration control and of pressure control and the ability to simultaneously detect different sensor signals still require improvement. In this study, a high-precision gas sensing material characterization system is developed based on vacuum technology, with the objective of enabling the precise and simultaneous measurement of electrical responses. Because of the implementation of vacuum technology, the gas concentration control accuracy is improved more than 1600 times, whereas the pressure of the test ambient condition can be precisely adjusted between vacuum and 1.2 bar. The vacuum-assisted gas-exchanging mechanism also enables the sensor response time to be determined more accurately. The system is capable of performing sensitivity, selectivity, and stability tests and can control the ambient relative humidity in a precise manner. More importantly, the levels of performance of three different optical signal measurement set-ups were investigated and compared in terms of detection range, linearity, noise, and response time, based on which of their scopes of application were proposed. Finally, single-period and cyclical tests were performed to examine the ability of the system to detect optical and electrical responses simultaneously, both at a single wavelength and in a spectral region.

Nitrate is one of the major inorganic nitrogen sources for microbes. Many bacterial and archaeal lineages have the capacity to express assimilatory nitrate reductase (NAS), which catalyzes the rate-limiting reduction of nitrate to nitrite. Although a nitrate assimilatory pathway in mycobacteria has been proposed and validated physiologically and genetically, the putative NAS enzyme has yet to be identified. Here, we report the characterization of a novel NAS encoded by Mycolicibacterium smegmatis Msmeg_4206, designated NasN, which differs from the canonical NASs in its structure, electron transfer mechanism, enzymatic properties, and phylogenetic distribution. Using sequence analysis and biochemical characterization, we found that NasN is an NADPH-dependent, diflavin-containing monomeric enzyme composed of a canonical molybdopterin cofactor-binding catalytic domain and an FMN-FAD/NAD-binding, electron-receiving/transferring domain, making it unique among all previously reported hetero-oligomeric NASs. Genetic studies revealed that NasN is essential for aerobic M. smegmatis growth on nitrate as the sole nitrogen source and that the global transcriptional regulator GlnR regulates nasN expression. Moreover, unlike the NADH-dependent heterodimeric NAS enzyme, NasN efficiently supports bacterial growth under nitrate-limiting conditions, likely due to its significantly greater catalytic activity and oxygen tolerance. Results from a phylogenetic analysis suggested that the nasN gene is more recently evolved than those encoding other NASs and that its distribution is limited mainly to Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. We observed that among mycobacterial species, most fast-growing environmental mycobacteria carry nasN, but that it is largely lacking in slow-growing pathogenic mycobacteria because of multiple independent genomic deletion events along their evolution.
