RESUMO

2023 marked the 30th anniversary of the Section of Physicochemistry of Interfacial Phenomena (PIP) of the Polish Chemical Society (PCS). It was established in 1993 on the initiative of members of the Lublin Branch of PCS. On May 18 the same year, the Chairman of the Branch, Prof. Roman Leboda asked the President of the Management Board of PCS to register a new section, called Physical Chemistry of Surface Phenomena. Prof. Wladyslaw Rudzinski was elected for the chairman of the Section, who is a world-renowned specialist in the field of adsorption. In May 1994, the inaugural meeting of the founding members of the Section took place in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland. The aim of it was presentation of the research topics of scientists representing various centers and teams that are part of Section. On June 10, 1997, at one of the subsequent meetings in Kraków, its members unanimously decided to change the name to the Section of Physicochemistry of Interfacial Phenomena.

RESUMO

The nettle, sage, mint and lemon balm herbs were used for biochars preparation. The physicochemical parameters of obtained materials were related to the lignocellulose composition of the precursors. It has been proved that the content of mineral substance has a significant influence on development of surface area, whereas the amount of hemicellulose affects the content of surface functional groups. It has been also shown that the obtained biochars are characterized by great energy parameters. The higher heating values (HHV) of the carbonaceous materials are comparable to the typical energy sources. The greatest HHV value (20.36 MJ/kg) was characteristic for the biochar obtained by pyrolysis of the lemon balm. In addition, the biochars were used for ionic polymers adsorption from one- and two-components solutions. Despite the adsorbed amounts of macromolecules are not great is has been proved that polyethylenimine and polyacrylic acid have positive influence on their mutual adsorption.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of the sweet cherry stones for the production of carbonaceous adsorbents by means of direct physical activation method, using conventional and microwave variant of heating. The adsorbents were characterized in terms of textural parameters, acidic-basic character of the surface, electrokinetic properties and their suitability for drinking water purification. Adsorption tests were carried out against three organic compounds - Triton X-100 (surfactant), bovine serum albumin (protein) and methylene blue (synthetic dye). Depending on the variant of heating applied during activation procedure, the obtained activated biochars differed significantly in terms of the elemental composition, acidic-basic properties as well as degree of specific surface development and the type of porous structure generated. Adsorption tests have showed that the efficiency of organic pollutants removal from aqueous solutions depends significantly not only on the type of the adsorbent and adsorbate applied, but also on the temperature and pH of the system. The sample prepared by microwave-assisted direct activation proved to be very effective in terms of all tested organic pollutants adsorption. The maximum sorption capacity toward Triton X-100, bovine serum albumin and methylene blue reached the level of 86.5, 23.4 and 81.1 mg/g, respectively.

RESUMO

Diclofenac is one of the most popular over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and poly(acrylic acid) is a frequently used as thickener, filler or stabilizer. For these reasons, they are common organic contaminants in raw wastewater. The purpose of the presented studies was to compare the adsorption capacity of three carbon-silica composites - metal-free C/SiO2, iron-enriched C/Fe/SiO2 and manganese-enriched C/Mn/SiO2 towards diclofenac. The studies were carried out in single, and mixed systems in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) polymer. Adsorption, desorption and kinetics of the adsorption process were investigated. The concentration of diclofenac in the supernatants was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The solids were also characterized with an ASAP apparatus using low-temperature nitrogen desorption adsorption isotherms at liquid nitrogen temperature. In addition, potentiometric titrations and electrophoretic mobility measurements, as well as stability tests of the studied suspensions were carried out. The most efficient composite among investigated ones proved to be C/Fe/SiO2 removing diclofenac at the level of 46.68 mg/g for its initial concentration of 90 ppm. The results obtained clearly demonstrated that the carbon-silica composites are effective in separation of drugs from aqueous solutions and can be successfully used in the future for the removal of organic pollutants from water environment.

RESUMO

Feroxyhyte (δ-FeOOH) was synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. Its potential application as adsorbent of an anionic and cationic dyes such as C.I. Acid Violet 1 (AV1) and C.I. Basic Blue 3 (BB3) was investigated by determining the adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir (36.6 mg/g for AV1 and 187 mg/g for BB3), Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Adsorption of AV1 and BB3 by δ-FeOOH drops with the presence of additives such as cationic and anionic surfactants (CTAB, SDS) and ionic polymers (PAA, PEI). The surface and electrokinetic properties of examined suspensions were also described. They include determination of the solid surface charge density and the zeta potential, as well as values of point of zero charge and isoelectric point of feroxyhyte particles without and with adsorbed layers of organic substances. Their analysis made possible to propose the most probable structure of electrical double layer formed at the iron mineral/aqueous solution interface.

RESUMO

The structure of cellular prion proteins encoded by the prion protein gene (PRNP) impacts susceptibility to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, including chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer. The recent emergence of CWD in Northern European reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), moose (Alces alces alces) and red deer (Cervus elaphus), in parallel with the outbreak in North America, gives reason to investigate PRNP variation in European deer, to implement risk assessments and adjust CWD management for deer populations under threat. We here report PRNP-sequence data from 911 samples of German red, roe (Capreolus capreolus), sika (Cervus nippon) and fallow deer (Dama dama) as well as additional data from 26 Danish red deer close to the German border and four zoo species not native to Germany. No PRNP sequence variation was observed in roe and fallow deer, as previously described for populations across Europe. In contrast, a broad PRNP variation was detected in red deer, with non-synonymous polymorphisms at codons 98, 226 and 247 as well as synonymous mutations at codons 21, 78, 136 and 185. Moreover, a novel 24 bp deletion within the octapeptide repeat was detected. In summary, 14 genotypes were seen in red deer with significant differences in their geographical distribution and frequencies, including geographical clustering of certain genotypes, suggesting "PRNP-linages" in this species. Based on data from North American CWD and the genotyping results of the European CWD cases, we would predict that large proportions of wild cervids in Europe might be susceptible to CWD once introduced to naive populations.

RESUMO

The adsorption mechanism of different polymers containing ionic polyamino acids monomers in the chain structure at the solid-liquid interface was investigated. Initially, the influence of molecular weight and solution pH on simple polyamino acids (poly(L-aspartic acid) and poly(L-lysine) binding was determined. Considering the obtained dependencies, the polymer adsorption layer conformation was proposed in the systems containing block copolymers (both diblock and symmetrical triblock) consisting of polypeptide as well as poly(ethylene glycol) fragments. The presented studies focused on the application of two experimental methods. The polymer adsorption was carried out using the batch method and the adsorbate concentration was determined spectrophotometrically. Then, the turbidimetric measurements were taken. The analysis of the obtained results showed that the adsorption process of block copolymers depends on two factors. Firstly, the solution pH determines both the nature of the interactions of the copolymer structural units with the solid surface and the conformation of the polypeptide chains. The second parameter influencing the adsorption layer structure is the ratio of the lengths of both blocks. Introducing a short PEG fragment into the polymer main chain may improve the polymer adsorption properties by increasing the number of interactions with the adsorbent surface.

RESUMO

Water resources are increasingly degraded due to the discharge of waste generated in municipal, industrial and agricultural areas. Therefore, the search for new materials enabling the effective treatment of drinking water and sewage is currently of great interest. This paper deals with the adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants on the surface of carbonaceous adsorbents prepared by thermochemical conversion of common pistachio nut shells. The influence of the direct physical activation with CO2 and chemical activation with H3PO4 on parameters, such as elemental composition, textural parameters, acidic-basic character of the surface as well as electrokinetic properties of the prepared carbonaceous materials was checked. The suitability of the activated biocarbons prepared as the adsorbents of iodine, methylene blue and poly(acrylic acid) from the aqueous solutions was estimated. The sample obtained via chemical activation of the precursor turned out to be much more effective in terms of all the tested pollutants adsorption. Its maximum sorption capacity toward iodine was 1059 mg/g, whereas in relation to methylene blue and poly(acrylic acid) 183.1 mg/g and 207.9 mg/g was achieved, respectively. For both carbonaceous materials, a better fit to the experimental data was achieved with a Langmuir isotherm than a Freundlich one. It has also been shown that the efficiency of organic dye, and especially anionic polymer adsorption from aqueous solutions, is significantly affected by solution pH and temperature of the adsorbate-adsorbent system.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of the low-quality brown coal, ash obtained as a result of its combustion, as well as used gear oil for the production of mineral-carbon adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized in terms of textural parameters, acidic-basic character of the surface, mineral matter contribution to the structure, as well as their suitability for drinking water purification. Adsorption tests were carried out against two synthetic dyes-methylene blue and methyl orange. In order to understand the nature of the organic pollutants adsorption, the effect of the initial dye concentration, temperature, and pH of the system as well as the phase contact time were investigated. The obtained mineral-carbon composite and activated carbons significantly differed not only in terms of the elemental composition and chemical character of the surface (from slightly acidic to strongly alkaline), but also showed a very diverse degree of specific surface development (from 21 to 656 m2/g) and the type of porous structure generated (from micro/mesoporous to typically mesoporous). Adsorption tests showed that the efficiency of organic dye removal from aqueous solutions primarily depends on the type of the adsorbent and adsorbate applied, and, to a lesser extent, on the temperature and pH of the system. In turn, kinetic studies have shown that the sorption of dyes on such materials is consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics model, regardless of the type of adsorbed dye.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: These days the number of potential food allergens is very large, but chicken is one of the most common allergens in dogs. Elimination diet is one of the clinical tools for the diagnosis of allergies and allergy tests are not very reliable. The restriction diet is most commonly carried out by feeding pet foods, relying on the ingredients on the label to select an elimination diet not containing previously eaten foods. Unfortunately, mislabeling of pet food is quite common. The purpose of this study was to determine the absence or presence of chicken DNA using both qualitative and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis methods in dry and wet maintenance complete pet foods for adult dogs. Results were used to verify the declared composition on the labels. RESULTS: Eleven out of fifteen (73%) dog foods were produced as declared by the manufacturer, two of which showed the presence of chicken protein as stated on the label. The remaining nine foods contained amounts of chicken DNA below 1%, consistent with declarations that no chicken was added in the composition. Four of tested dog foods (27%) were not produced consistently with the declaration on the packaging. Two dog foods (one dry and one wet) did not contain the claimed chicken protein. In two foods the addition of chicken DNA was detected at the level of over 2% and almost 6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we focused on one of the most commonly undeclared animal species on the label-chicken protein-and performed DNA analyzes to investigate possible contamination and mislabeling. The results showed some inaccuracies. However, most of them are trace amounts below 1%, which proves compliance with the label. Our results showed that undeclared animal species can be as common as missing an animal protein declared on the label. The conducted research indicates that both dry and wet analyzed foods should not be recommended as a diagnostic tool in elimination tests, because it may result in false negative results. Over-the-counter maintenance foods for dogs should not be recommended for the diagnosis and treatment of food hypersensitivity.

RESUMO

The main objective of this study was to prepare a series of biochars and activated biocarbons via conventional pyrolysis as well as chemical or physical activation of solid residue after solvent extraction of wild growing plant (popular weed)-mugwort. The influence of the variant of the thermochemical treatment of the precursor on such parameters as elemental composition, textural parameters, acidic-basic character of the surface as well as adsorption abilities of the prepared carbonaceous materials was checked. Moreover, the suitability of the biochars prepared as renewable fuels was also investigated. It has been shown that the products obtained from the mugwort stems differ in many respects from the analogous materials obtained from mugwort leaves. The products were micro/mesoporous materials with surface area reaching 974.4 m2/g and total pore volume-1.190 cm3/g. Surface characterization showed that chemical activation with H3PO4 results in the acidic character of the adsorbents surface, whereas products of pyrolysis and especially physical activation show strongly alkaline surface properties. All the adsorbents were used for methylene blue and iodine adsorption from the aquatic environment. To understand the nature of the sorption process, the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were employed. The Langmuir model best described the experimental results, and the maximum sorption capacity calculated for this model reached 164.14 mg of methylene blue per gram of adsorbent. In case of iodine removal, the maximum capacity reached 948.00 mg/g. The research carried out for the biochars prepared via conventional pyrolysis showed that the value of their heat of combustion varies in the range from 21.74 to 30.27 MJ/kg, so they can be applied as the renewable fuels.

RESUMO

Nettle and the sage herbs were used to obtain carbonaceous adsorbents. For the biochar preparation the precursors were dried and subjected to conventional pyrolysis. Activated carbons were obtained during precursor impregnation with phosphoric(V) acid and multistep pyrolysis. The textural parameters and acidic-basic properties of the obtained adsorbents were studied. The activated carbons prepared from the above herbs were characterized by the largely developed specific surface area. The obtained carbonaceous adsorbents were used for polymer removal from aqueous solution. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) were chosen, due to their frequent presence in wastewater resulting from their extensive usage in many industrial fields. The influence of polymers on the electrokinetic properties of activated carbon were considered. PAA adsorption caused a decrease in the zeta potential and the surface charge density, whereas PEI increased these values. The activated carbons and biochars were used as polymer adsorbents from their single and binary solutions. Both polymers showed the greatest adsorption at pH 3. Poly (acrylic acid) had no significant effect on the polyethylenimine adsorbed amount, whereas PEI presence decreased the amount of PAA adsorption. Both polymers could be successfully desorbed from the activated carbons and biochar surfaces. The presented studies are innovatory and greatly required for the development of new environment protection procedures.

RESUMO

The worldwide production of colored products and intermediates is increasing year on year. The consequence of this is an increase in the number of liquid effluents containing toxic dyes entering the aquatic environment. Therefore, it is extremely important to dispose of them. One of the techniques for the elimination of environmentally harmful dyes is adsorption. The main purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of using a carbon and silica (C/SiO2)-based composite for the removal of the azo dye C.I. Basic Red 46 (BR46). The adsorption capacity of C/SiO2 was found to be temperature dependent and increased from 41.90 mg/g to 176.10 mg/g with a temperature rise from 293 K to 333 K in accordance with the endothermic process. The Langmuir isotherm model seems to be the better one for the description of experimental data rather than Freundlich or Dubinin-Radushkevich. The free energy (ΔGo) confirmed the spontaneous nature of BR46 adsorption by C/SiO2. Kinetic parameters revealed that BR46 uptake followed the pseudo-second-order equation; however, the external diffusion plays a significant role. Surfactants of cationic, anionic and non-ionic type influenced BR46 retention by C/SiO2. The electrokinetic results (solid surface charge density and zeta potential) indicated that the adsorption of cationic dye and surfactant influences the structure of the electrical double layer formed at the solid-liquid interface.

RESUMO

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with atherogenic dyslipidemia. Our aim was firstly to investigate patterns of fatty acids (FA) composition through various stages of CKD, and secondly, to evaluate the effect of CKD-specific FA disturbances on the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism at a cellular level. Serum FA composition was analyzed in 191 patients with consecutive severity stages of CKD, and 30 healthy controls free from CKD. Next, HepG2 human hepatic cells were treated with major representatives of various FA groups, as well as with FA extracted from a mix of serums of controls and of CKD stage 5 patients. Across worsening stages of CKD severity, there was an increasing monounsaturated FA (MUFA) content. It was associated with a concomitant decrease in n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated FA. The incubation of hepatocytes with FA from CKD patients (compared to that of healthy subjects), resulted in significantly higher mRNA levels of genes involved in FA synthesis (fatty acid synthase (FASN) increased 13.7 ± 3.5 times, stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) increased 4.26 ± 0.36 times), and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) formation (apolipoprotein B (ApoB) increased 7.35 ± 1.5 times, microsomal triacylglycerol transfer protein (MTTP) increased 2.74 ± 0.43 times). In conclusion, there were progressive alterations in serum FA composition of patients with CKD. These alterations may partly contribute to CKD hypertriglyceridemia by influencing hepatocyte expression of genes of lipid synthesis and release.

RESUMO

In this paper, the lysozyme (LSZ) adsorption impact on the silica suspension stability was established. In other words, the stabilization/destabilization mechanism of the SiO2/LSZ system was explained based on the adsorption, electrokinetic and stability measurement results. Lysozyme adsorbs on the silica surface in the whole pH range. This process contributes to the changes in silica surface charge and zeta potential values. The lysozyme addition influences the system stability too. At pH 7.6 and 9, a large decrease in the silica suspension stability was found. It is connected with the neutralization of solid negative charge by the positively charged macromolecules. As a result, large aggregates can be formed, which is highly desirable in the silica removal procedure.

RESUMO

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Lipid disorders, a constant feature of CKD, might contribute to this state. The aim of this study was to evaluate n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) composition in CKD patients treated with dialysis, in comparison to the general population and to assess possible associations between the n-3 PUFA profile and anthropometric variables. Thirty-three prevalent dialysis patients were studied and compared with an age- and sex-adjusted control group of 22 patients. Fatty acid composition in serum was analyzed by gas chromatography with a mass spectrometer detector (GC-MS) and anthropometric measures were assessed by bioimpedance spectroscopy. The fatty acid profile of dialyzed patients was characterized by a significantly lower percentage content of n-3 PUFA. For α-linolenic acid (ALA), it was 0.21 ± 0.09% in dialysis patients versus 0.33 ± 0.11% in the control group (p < .001). For eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), 0.59 ± 0.23% versus 1.15 ± 0.87% (p < .001), and for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 1.11 ± 0.50% versus 1.75 ± 0.87% (p < .001), respectively. The amount of n-3 PUFA decreased with time on dialysis and it correlated positively with body fat mass. For DHA, this correlation was r = .48 (p < .01) and for EPA r = .40 (p < .05). Patients with CKD have a relatively low content of n-3 PUFA which may contribute to their high cardiovascular risk. Patients with a higher content of body fat are characterized by a favorable fatty acid composition.

RESUMO

The lipid liquid crystalline sponge phase (L3) has the advantages that it is a nanoscopically bicontinuous bilayer network able to accommodate large amounts of water and it is easy to manipulate due to its fluidity. This paper reports on the detailed characterization of L3 phases with water channels large enough to encapsulate bioactive macromolecules such as proteins. The aqueous phase behavior of a novel lipid mixture system, consisting of diglycerol monooleate (DGMO), and a mixture of mono-, di- and triglycerides (Capmul GMO-50) was studied. In addition, sponge-like nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by Polysorbate 80 (P80) were prepared based on the DGMO/GMO-50 system, and their structure was correlated with the phase behavior of the corresponding bulk system. These NPs were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryo-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to determine their size, shape, and inner structure as a function of the DGMO/GMO-50 ratio. In addition, the effect of P80 as stabilizer was investigated. We found that the NPs have aqueous pores with diameters up to 13 nm, similar to the ones in the bulk phase.

RESUMO

Activated carbons obtained via the thermochemical treatment of lemon balm and mint herbs were applied for ionic polymers adsorption, which directly affects the stability of these types of aqueous suspensions. The examined carbonaceous materials were characterized by well-developed specific surface area (approximately 1000 m2/g) and mesoporous structure. The adsorbed amounts of anionic poly(acrylic acid) and cationic polyethyleneimine from one-component solutions reached significant levels, but the efficiency of adsorption of these compounds from binary solutions slightly decreased. Moreover, the ionic polymers showed stabilizing properties towards the activated carbons suspensions. For both adsorbents, the most stable suspensions were systems containing both types of polymeric macromolecules with different ionic characters. This was due to the occurrence of electrosteric and depletion stabilization mechanisms. Furthermore, the zeta potential and size of particle aggregates were also influenced by the presence of polymers in the aqueous suspensions of activated carbons.

RESUMO

A series of new granular carbonaceous adsorbents was prepared via single-stage physical and chemical activation of walnut shells. Their suitability for removing various types of organic pollutants (represented by dyes, surfactants and water-soluble polymers) from the liquid phase was assessed. The activation of the precursor was carried out with CO2 and H3PO4 using conventional heating. Activated biocarbons were characterized in terms of chemical composition, acidic-basic nature of the surface, textural and electrokinetic properties as well as thermal stability. Depending on the type of activating agent used during the activation procedure, the obtained biocarbons differed in terms of specific surface area (from 401 to 1361 m2/g) and the type of porous structure produced (microporosity contribution in the range of 45-75%). Adsorption tests proved that the effectiveness of removing organic pollutants from the liquid phase depended to a large extent on the type of prepared adsorbent as well as the chemical nature and the molecular size of the adsorbate used. The chemically activated sample showed greater removal efficiency in relation to all tested pollutants. Its maximum adsorption capacity for methylene blue, poly(acrylic acid), poly(ethylene glycol) and Triton X-100 reached the levels of 247.1, 680.9, 38.5 and 61.8 mg/g, respectively.
