RESUMO

Several aluminum tris(diorganophosphates) have been synthesized and characterized via elemental analysis, NMR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as powder XRD, and SEM. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the aluminum tris(diethylphosphate) crystal structure comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent catena-Al[O2P(OEt)2]3 chains propagating along the c-axis. Their parallel orientation favors the formation of closely packed hexagonal domains. PXRD data suggest that other homologues have a similar structure, with the interchain distance closely corresponding to the dimensions of organic ligands. They are also susceptible to a reversible dissociation to ionic species under the effect of primary amines. This feature can be utilized for the synthesis of epoxy nanocomposites.

RESUMO

Fluorescence and NMR relaxation studies have been performed on horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (alcohol: NAD + oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.1) as a function of temperature. Observations of both the intrinsic protein fluorescence and the fluorescence of a noncovalently bound apolar probe, 2-(p-toluidinyl)naphthalene-6-sulfonic acid (TNS), indicate that a significant thermal transition occurs in the protein in the range of temperature 0-40 degrees C, and that there are different temperature-dependent forms of the enzyme. The transition between these forms is affected by the binding of specific ligands to the enzyme's active site. Time-resolved fluorescence studies of the two tryptophan residues in the enzyme suggest that this thermal transition occurs around tryptophan-314, which is buried near the intersubunit region. Binding of nucleotide to the enzyme causes a decrease in spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, which may result from a decrease in the number of water molecules bound to the protein. The observed results may be due to the interactions between the structural domains into which the monomer of the protein is folded.

RESUMO

Spin label EPR studies (Strzalka and Gruszecki (1994) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1194, 138-142) revealed that beta-carotene affects structural and dynamic properties of model dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) membranes (multilamellar liposomes) more than polar carotenoid lutein. NMR measurements presented in this paper demonstrate that beta-carotene exerts different effect on various groups of the DPPC molecule. It was found that beta-carotene: (1) increases motional freedom of lipid headgroups as revealed by means of 31P-NMR; (2) increases motional freedom of alkyl chains forming the hydrophobic core of the membrane greater than that of a choline moiety as revealed by means of 13C-NMR. In all cases the effect of beta-carotene with respect to the dynamics of DPPC molecules is found to be more pronounced below the main phase transition temperature than in the membrane's fluid state. The influence of beta-carotene on the molecular dynamics of DPPC molecules is discussed in terms of localization and orientation of this pigment within lipid bilayer.

RESUMO

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) of the female genital tract is rare with only 30 cases, including this case, documented in the literature. We present a patient who had total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for an ovarian cyst and on histologic examination GCA involving the arteries of the myometrium, cervical stroma, ovaries and tubes was unexpectedly discovered. Upon questioning of the patient and further investigations it became clear that the patient did have symptoms and signs suggestive of systemic GCA including fatigue, low-grade fever, weight loss and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Treatment with oral corticosteroids resulted in rapid and complete recovery. It is concluded that an incidental finding of GCA in the genitalia should alert the clinician to the possibility of systemic GCA. If upon questioning of the patient and further investigations the existence of systemic GCA is confirmed, treatment with corticosteroids should be considered.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the screening questions in the French version of the Dementia Quality of Life (DQoL) questionnaire. To assess the psychometric properties of the French DQoL, 155 patients with mild-to-moderate dementia were recruited. Here, we compared the psychometric properties of the instrument between patients who passed the screening test (n = 109) and the whole study population (n = 155). The French DQoL version showed a good test-retest reliability at a 2-week interval (0.95 ≤ intraclass correlation coefficients ≤ 1.0), and an average internal consistency (0.58 ≤ Cronbach's α ≤ 0.87) for the 2 study groups. Significant differences were observed in the 2 groups for 4 dimensions of the DQoL regarding dementia severity (Cornell scale), and for 3 dimensions evaluating depression (MMSE). Convergent validity with the Duke Health Profile revealed many significant correlations between dimensions not only in the 109 patients, but also in the whole study population. Our study demonstrated that patients who failed the screening procedure nonetheless seemed to be able to answer the DQoL questionnaire, the whole study group showing acceptable psychometric properties.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tinea pedis is a common infection in soldiers. However, prevalence and risk factors for tinea pedis in soldiers were investigated in only a few studies. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for tinea pedis in Israeli soldiers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including interviews, clinical skin examination and mycological tests was performed in Israeli soldiers. The presence of tinea pedis was assessed using the Athlete's Foot Severity Index (AFSI), a scoring system that was developed in order to evaluate the presence and severity of tinea pedis. In soldiers with clinical evidence of tinea pedis (AFSI > 1), scrapings were taken for direct microscopic examination (20% KOH preparation) and fungal culture. Statistical analyses were performed using chi-square or Fisher's exact test for dichotomous variables (as needed), or t-tests for continuous variables. Logistic regression was used for multivariate analyses of dichotomous variables. RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty-three soldiers were included in the study: 205 men (91.9%) and 18 women (8.1%). Mean age was 19.6 years (SD 1.0 year). Clinical point prevalence was 60.1%. Mycological point prevalence was 27.3%. Further analyses were performed using the clinical point prevalence. Univariate analyses demonstrated that the prevalence of tinea pedis varied with the setting of military training (basic training: 70.3%, advanced infantry training: 81.5%, armor commander training: 56.4% and armor officer training: 34.8%) and was associated with male gender, frequency of sock changes and the length of military service. A multivariate analysis demonstrated that tinea pedis was associated with the setting of the military training (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2-2.1) and male gender (OR 4.3, 95% CI 1.4-13.8); however, there was no association with hygiene measures (e.g. frequency of changing socks or sleeping with socks) or the length of military service. CONCLUSION: Tinea pedis is highly prevalent in Israeli soldiers. Association of tinea pedis with the setting of military training suggests that contagious spread may be an important risk factor. We suggest that environmental interventions should be planned to in order to decrease the morbidity of tinea pedis among soldiers.

RESUMO

We developed a simple scoring system to evaluate the severity of tinea pedis (Athlete's foot severity score, AFSS). The AFSS consists of a clinical evaluation, using a three-point scale, of erythema and scaling in the plantar and interdigital spaces of the feet, and counts of interdigital spaces involved. Each foot is evaluated separately. The validity of the AFSS was assessed in 224 soldiers of the Israel Defense Force using mycological cultures as the main outcome measure and subjective assessment of pruritus as the secondary outcome measure. Mycological examinations were performed in 106 patients who had clinical evidence of tinea pedis. AFSS was significantly associated with culture results (P<0.0001), as well as with the presence of pruritus (P=0.002), and pruritus scores (P=0.025). We conclude the AFSS is valid for the clinical evaluation of tinea pedis severity in military settings. The application of AFSS to civilian morbidity should be subjected to further evaluation.
