In this study carbon adsorbents were produced from caraway (Carum carvi L.) seeds, through direct and physical activation by carbon dioxide. The resulting biochar adsorbents were analyzed using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Boehm titration. Furthermore, the acid-base properties of the biochar samples obtained were examined, and the pH of their aqueous extracts was determined. The obtained adsorbents had a specific surface area ranging between 10 to 70 m2 /g. Resulting carbon materials exhibited a predominance of basic groups on their surfaces. The sorption capacities of methyl red for the samples varied from 3 to 20 mg/g. Conducted adsorption studies determined, that the adsorption kinetics of the dye on biochar materials followed a pseudo-second order model and the adsorption process was best described by the Freundlich isotherm, indicating the development of a multi-layer adsorbate on their surfaces. The effectiveness of adsorption in aqueous solutions of methyl red increased with the rise in process temperature. Moreover, the adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic based on thermodynamic investigations.

The aim of this study was to obtain nitrogen-enriched activated carbons from orthocoking coal. The initial material was subjected to a demineralisation process. The demineralised precursor was pyrolysed at 500 °C and then activated with sodium hydroxide at 800 °C. Activated carbon adsorbents were subjected to the process of ammoxidation using a mixture of ammonia and air at two different temperature variants (300 and 350 °C). Nitrogen introduction was carried out on stages of demineralised precursor, pyrolysis product, and oxidising activator. The elemental composition, acid-base properties, and textural parameters of the obtained carbon adsorbents were determined. The activated carbons were investigated for their ability to remove nitrogen dioxide. The results demonstrated that the ammoxidation process incorporates new nitrogen-based functional groups into the activated carbon structure. Simultaneously, the ammoxidation process modified the acid-base characteristics of the surface and negatively affected the textural parameters of the resulting adsorbents. Furthermore, the study showed that all of the obtained carbon adsorbents exhibited a distinct microporous texture. Adsorption tests were carried out against NO2 and showed that the carbon adsorbents obtained were highly effective in removing this gaseous pollutant. The best sorption capacity towards NO2 was 23.5 mg/g under dry conditions and 75.0 mg/g under wet conditions.

Turmeric, known for its curcuminoid-rich rhizome, particularly curcumin, exhibits notable antioxidant and antiviral properties. The likelihood of microbial contamination necessitates finding reliable techniques for subjecting the sample to radiation from this plant-based raw material. One alternative is to expose curcumin to radiation (e-beam), which was carried out as part of this research. Confirmation of the lack of curcumin decomposition was carried out using HPLC-DAD/MS techniques. Additionally, using the EPR technique, the generated free radicals were defined as radiation effects. Using a number of methods to assess the ability to scavenge free radicals (DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP), a slight decrease in the activity of curcumin raw material was determined. The analysis of the characteristic bands in the FT-IR spectra allowed us to indicate changes in the phenolic OH groups as an effect of the presence of radicals formed.

The aim of this study was to obtain a series of activated carbon samples by the chemical activation of low-rank coal. The precursor was impregnated with a NaOH solution. Activated carbons were characterized by determining their textural parameters and content of surface oxygen functional groups and by using an elemental analysis. The carbons were tested as potential adsorbents for the removal of liquid pollutants represented by rhodamine B. The effectiveness of rhodamine B removal from water solutions depended on the initial concentration of the dye, the mass of rhodamine B, and the pH and temperature of the reaction. The isotherm examination followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the rhodamine B was 119 mg/g. The kinetic investigation favored the pseudo-second-order model, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. The thermodynamic assessment indicated spontaneous and endothermic adsorption, with decreased randomness at the solid-liquid interface. The experiment revealed that a 0.1 M HCl solution was the most effective regenerative agent.

In this study, biocarbon was obtained from the waste material corn digest. Carbon adsorbents were obtained by physical activation of the precursor with CO2. Detailed physicochemical characterization of the biocarbon was carried out using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Boehm titration, zero-charge point (pHpzc) and iodine number. In addition, the sorption capacity of the biocarbon agents towards an aqueous solution of methylene blue and methyl red was determined, and the kinetics of the adsorption process were determined. The biocarbon adsorbents were characterized by an average developed specific surface area covering the range from 320 to 616 m2/g. The sorption capacity of the biocarbon adsorbents against methylene blue ranged from 40 mg/g to 146 mg/g, and for methyl red it covered the range from 31 mg/g to 113 mg/g. It was shown that the efficiency of organic dye removal by the obtained biocarbons depends on the initial concentration of the adsorbate solution, its mass, shaking rate, adsorbent-adsorbate contact time and temperature. The results obtained from the Langmuir and Freundlich kinetic models showed that the Langmuir model is the most suitable model for describing the adsorption of the studied pollutants on biocarbon. In turn, the adsorption kinetics of dyes is described according to the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption studies also showed that as the process temperature increases, the removal efficiency of methylene blue and methyl red increases.

In this study, fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds were used as a precursor to obtain carbon adsorbents through physical activation with carbon dioxide and chemical activation by impregnating the precursor with sodium carbonate. The physical activation involved the carbonization of the precursor at a temperature of 600 °C for 60 min and activation at a temperature of 800 °C for 30 min with carbon dioxide. Chemical activation included impregnation of the precursor with sodium carbonate at a mass ratio of a precursor to activator of 1:2. The mixture was activated in a nitrogen atmosphere with a flow rate at a temperature of 700 °C for 45 min. The resulting biochar samples were washed with 5% hydrochloric acid and subsequently rinsed with boiling distilled water. The biochar adsorbents were characterized using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Boehm titration, and pH measurements of their aqueous extracts. The specific surface area of the obtained adsorbents ranged from 89 to 345 m2/g. Biochar adsorbents exhibit a predominance of acidic groups over basic groups on their surfaces. The sorption capacities of the obtained samples towards an aqueous solution of methyl red range from 26 to 135 mg/g. Based on adsorption studies, it was found that the adsorption of the dye on the obtained biochar materials follows a pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich isotherm best describes the studied process, indicating the formation of a multilayer of adsorbate on the adsorbent surface. The efficacy of adsorption in aqueous solutions of methyl red was found to increase with the elevation of the process temperature. Moreover, thermodynamic studies have shown that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Consequently, this work provides a description of the physicochemical parameters of two biochars obtained by physical and chemical activation of a little-studied precursor-fennel seeds-and studies on their potential use as adsorbents for contaminants from the aqueous phase.

In this study, activated carbons were produced through the chemical activation of caraway seeds using three different activators: Na2CO3, K2CO3, and H3PO4. A 1:2 weight ratio of precursor to activator was maintained in every instance. Comprehensive analyses were conducted on the resultant activated carbons, including elemental analysis, textural parameters determination, Boehm titration for surface oxygen functional groups, pH assessment of aqueous extracts, and quantification of ash content. The produced materials were subjected to adsorption tests for methylene blue and methyl red sodium salt from the liquid phase and the effects of adsorbent dosage, pH of the aqueous dye solution, process temperature, and adsorbent-adsorbate contact time on sorption capacity obtained. To characterize the adsorption model of the examined pollutants, both the Langmuir and Freundlich equations were employed. In addition, the sorption capacity of the obtained carbon materials against an iodine aqueous solution was assessed. The specific surface area of the obtained adsorbents ranged from 269 to 926 m2/g. By employing potassium carbonate to chemically activate the starting substance, the resulting activated carbons show the highest level of specific surface area development and the greatest sorption capacity against the tested impurities-296 mg/g for methylene blue and 208 mg/g for methyl red sodium salt. The adsorption rate for both dyes was determined to align with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental adsorption data for methylene blue were well-described by the Langmuir model, whereas the Freundlich model was found to be congruent with the data pertaining to methyl red sodium salt.

The residues obtained from the extraction of Inonotus obliquus fungus were used to produce carbonaceous adsorbents. The initial material was subjected to pyrolysis in a microwave oven. The adsorbents were characterized through elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, and Boehm titration. The carbonaceous adsorbents were tested for the removal of NO2, methylene blue, and malachite green. The results indicated that the obtained carbonaceous adsorbents exhibited basic characteristics and possessed specific surface areas of 372 and 502 m2/g. The adsorption process of liquid contaminants was modeled using the single-layer Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 101 and 109 mg/g for methylene blue, and 75 and 77 mg/g for malachite green. The kinetic study demonstrated that the adsorption of methylene blue and malachite green was better described by a pseudo-second order model. The study affirmed that the adsorption of organic dyes onto the resultant carbonaceous adsorbents was both spontaneous and endothermic. The study also demonstrated that the presence of an air stream during the NO2 adsorption process and prehumidization of the adsorbent with humid air had a beneficial effect on the obtained sorption capacities. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that pyrolysis of the extraction residues from the fungus Inonotus obliquus yields highly effective, environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient carbonaceous adsorbents for the removal of both gaseous and liquid pollutants.

The results of kinetic measurements revealed an accelerating effect of acetazolamide (ACT) on the multistep In(III) ions electroreduction in chlorates(VII) on a novel, cyclically renewable liquid silver amalgam film electrode (R-AgLAFE). The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were determined by applying the DC polarography, square-wave (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was shown that ACT catalyzed the electrode reaction ("cap-pair" effect) by adsorbing on the surface of the R-AgLAFE electrode. The catalytic activity of ACT was explained as related to its ability to form active In(III)- acetazolamide complexes on the electrode surface, facilitating the electron transfer process. The active complexes constitute a substrate in the electroreduction process and their different structures and properties are responsible for differences in the catalytic activity. The determined values of the activation energy ΔH≠ point to the catalytic activity of ACT in the In(III) ions electroreduction process in chlorates(VII). Analysis of the standard entropy values ΔS0 confirm changes in the dynamics of the electrode process.

Biocarbons were obtained by physical and chemical activation of the residue of the extraction of chaga fungi (Inonotus obliquus). The residue was subjected to heat treatment carried out in a microwave oven and in a quartz tubular reactor. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, determination of pH, and the contents of acidic and basic oxygen functional groups on the surface of biocarbons by the Boehm method. The final biocarbon adsorbents have surface areas varying from 521-1004 m2/g. The physical activation of the precursor led to a strongly basic character of the surface. Chemical activation of Inonotus obliquus promoted the generation of acid functional groups. All biocarbons were used for methyl red sodium salt adsorption from the liquid phase. The sorption capacities of biocarbons towards the organic dye studied varied from 77 to 158 mg/g. The Langmuir model was found to better describe the experimental results. The results of the kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption of methyl red sodium salt on the biocarbons followed the pseudo-second-order model. The acidic environment was conducive to the adsorption of the dye on the obtained biocarbons. Moreover, thermodynamic studies confirmed that the organic dye adsorption on the biocarbons was a spontaneous endothermic process. The biocarbons obtained were also tested as adsorbents of hydrogen sulfide in dry and wet conditions. The sorption capacities towards hydrogen sulfide varied in the range of 21.9-77.9 mg. The results have shown that the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide depends on the process conditions and the activation procedure of biocarbons (method of activation and thermochemical treatment of samples). It has been shown that the initial material used can be a new precursor for obtaining cheap and-more importantly-universal bioadsorbents characterized by high effectiveness in the removal of air and water pollutants.

Herbal raw materials with antidiabetic activity can be a valuable support to therapy. An optimized extraction process allows for the best possible health-promoting effect. Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the content of methanol used in the extraction mixture, its time, and temperature. The aim of this study was to enhance the efficiency of the pomegranate flowers extraction process in order to obtain extracts with the highest enzyme inhibition power (α-amylase and α-glucosidase), which is important for the antidiabetic effect and the highest antioxidant activity (DPPH assay). In the Box-Behnken design model, the content of pelargonidin-3,5-glucoside-anthocyanin compound that is associated with antidiabetic activity was also optimized as a variable associated with the action profile of pomegranate flower extracts. The process optimization carried out in this study provides a basis for further research using the pomegranate flower extract with the most potent desired properties, essential for supporting diabetes treatment based on pomegranate flowers.

INTRODUCTION: The expansion of a hexanucleotide GGGGCC repeat (G4C2) in the C9orf72 locus is the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In addition, C9orf72 expansion has also been detected in patients with a clinical manifestation of Parkinson's Disease (PD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Huntington's Disease (HD), and ataxic disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1,387 patients with clinically suspected ALS, HD or spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) were enrolled, and the prevalence of C9orf72 expansions was estimated. RESULTS: The hexanucleotide expansion accounted for 3.7% of the ALS patients, 0.2% of the HD suspected patients with excluded HTT mutation, and 1.3% of the suspected SBMA patients with excluded mutation in AR gene. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report revealing the presence of C9orf72 expansion in patients with a suspected SBMA diagnosis. Consequently, we advise testing for C9orf72 expansion in patients presenting with the SBMA phenotype and a genetically unsolved diagnosis.

AIMS: The number of patients with heart failure (HF) and implantable cardiac electronic devices has been growing steadily. Remote monitoring care (RC) of cardiac implantable electronic devices can facilitate patient-healthcare clinical interactions and prompt preventive activities to improve HF outcomes. However, studies that have investigated the efficacy of remote monitoring have shown mixed findings, with better results for the system including daily verification of transmission. The purpose of the RESULT study was to analyse the impact of remote monitoring on clinical outcomes in HF patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator [ICD/cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D)] in real-life conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: The RESULT is a prospective, single-centre, randomized trial. Patients with HF and de novo ICD or CRT-D implantation were randomized to undergo RC vs. in-office follow-ups (SC, standard care). The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death and hospitalization due to cardiovascular reasons within 12 months after randomization. We randomly assigned 600 eligible patients (299 in RC vs. 301 in SC). Baseline clinical and echocardiographic characteristics were well-balanced and similar in both arms. The incidence of the primary endpoint differed significantly between RC and SC and involved 39.5% and 48.5% of patients, respectively, (P = 0.048) within the 12-month follow-up. The rate of all-cause mortality was similar between the studied groups (6% vs. 6%, P = 0.9), whereas hospitalization rate due to cardiovascular reasons was higher in SC (37.1% vs. 45.5%, P = 0.045). CONCLUSION: Remote monitoring of HF patients with implanted ICD or CRT-D significantly reduced the primary endpoint rate, mostly as a result of a lower hospitalization rate in the RC arm (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02409225).

A technology of activated bio-carbons production from the residue left after supercritical extraction of hops is described. The effect of the variant of chemical activation and impregnation ratio on the physicochemical properties as well as sorption capacity towards toxic gas of acidic character (nitrogen dioxide), basic organic dye (aqueous solution of methylene blue - MB) and iodine was investigated. The materials obtained were activated bio-carbons of well-developed surface area ranging between 897 and 1095m2/g, showing clearly acidic character of the surface. The sorption tests results proved that chemical activation of the residue left after supercritical extraction of hops allows obtaining activated bio-carbons with very high sorption capacity towards nitrogen dioxide, reaching to 77.2 and 155.3mg/g in dry and wet conditions, respectively. The maximum sorption capacity of the adsorbents towards methylene blue was 328.75mg/g, while towards iodine 1815mg/g. The equilibrium data for aqueous solution of MB were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich models, whereas the kinetics of the adsorption process was studied using pseudo-first and second-order models. According to the obtained data, the adsorption of MB from aqueous solution is better described by Langmuir model and pseudo-second order kinetic model.

AIMS: Ablation is an effective treatment of symptomatic and drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). Using data from the European AF Ablation Pilot Registry comprising 1410 patients from 10 European countries, we prospectively investigated regional differences in AF ablation regarding patient selection, ablation strategy, and outcome. METHODS AND RESULTS: Countries were divided into three regions: South (Greece, Italy, Spain), East (Czech Republic, Poland), and West/North (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and the Netherlands). One-year success was defined as patient survival free from atrial arrhythmia, with or without antiarrhythmic drugs (AAD). In all regions, patients were symptomatic and treated extensively with beta-blockers and AAD pre-ablation. Patients in East had more co-morbidity, increased thromboembolic risk, were more likely to have paroxysmal AF, and they underwent more left atrial linear ablations. Adverse events remained within expected levels, albeit with a significantly higher reporting of adverse cardiovascular events in the West/North (4.7 vs. 1.4 and 1.5% in South and East, P = 0.0032). There was no significant difference in peripheral/vascular, neurological, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, or general adverse events. The 1-year success rate after ablation differed non-statistically between regions ranging from 69.1 to 74.7%. A second ablation was performed in 23.2% in West/North compared with 10.5 and 16.5% in South and East. The proportion of patients still on AADs was highest in the South region (51.6 vs. 42.3 and 38.8% in East and West/North). CONCLUSION: This study with all-comer patients shows that patient selection for ablation follows current guidelines but reveals significant differences regarding co-morbidity, medication, and ablation strategy. Despite this, 1-year outcomes are without significant differences and in line with previously published clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: The complex aetiology of gastric lesions in pigs remains largely unknown and effective preventive measures and pharmaceutical treatment of the disease have not been developed yet. Regardless of the fact that the overwhelming majority of previous research works dealing with gastric ulceration in pigs focused on the role of the nutritional determinants, including chemical composition of feeds, cereal type, finely ground pelleted diets, and feed additives, conclusions presented therein remain highly ambiguous. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the disease on production performance, and investigate the influence of selected non-dietary risk factors on the prevalence of gastric alterations in finishing pigs reared under conditions of 11 modern farms located in Poland. RESULTS: A total number of 26,043 finishing pigs was examined. 15,228 (58.47%) had gastric ulcers. Intact stomachs were detected in 6176 animals (23.71%). Parakeratosis and erosion were observed in 2551 (9.80%) and 2088 (8.02%), respectively. Among eight continuous variables two were found to be significantly associated with prevalence of the gastric ulcer: the growing number of animals in the herd, which was negatively correlated (P = 0.002; ρ = -0.37), and the growing average entry weight of animals transported to the finisher farm (P = 0.047; ρ = 0.24), which increased the risk of gastric ulcers prevalence. Among 12 nominal variables, problems with the quality of farm management (P = 0.041), and usage of straw as a bedding material (P = 0.002) were identified as determinants significantly associated with occurrence of the analysed health problem. CONCLUSIONS: Among 20 non-nutritional variables analysed in our study only few factors were found to be associated with the prevalence of the disease. The impact of broadly understood management issues on gastric health in finishing pigs deserves further research.

The present work reports an effective method for the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants using membranes based on different carbonaceous materials. The membranes were prepared based on cellulose acetate (18 wt. %), polyvinylpyrrolidone as a pore-generating agent (2 wt. %) and activated carbon (1 wt. %). Activated carbons were developed from residues after extraction of the mushroom Inonotus obliguus using microwave radiation. It has been demonstrated that the addition of activated carbon to the membranes resulted in alterations to their physical properties, including porosity, equilibrium water content and permeability. Furthermore, the chemical properties of the membranes were also affected, with changes observed in the content of the surface oxygen group. The addition of carbon material had a positive effect on the removal of copper ions from their aqueous solutions by the cellulose-carbon composites obtained. Moreover, the membranes proved to be more effective in the removal of copper ions than iron ones and phenol. The membranes were found to show higher effectiveness in copper removal from a solution of the initial concentration of 800 mg/L. The most efficient in copper ions removal was the membrane containing urea-enriched activated carbon.

INTRODUCTION: The intricate management of heart failure (HF), especially in the context of reduced ejection fraction, is compounded by an elevated risk of thromboembolic events. Existing studies offer inconclusive insights into the interplay between MR and the coagulation system. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the impact of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) on specific coagulation parameters in HF patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cohort of 31 HF patients with severe MR undergoing TEER underwent systematic evaluation at three time points (V1, V2, and V3). Coagulation parameters, including fibrinogen concentration, thrombin generation, fibrin clot permeability (Ks), and clot lysis time (CLT), were assessed (n = 27 [V2], and n = 25 [V3]). RESULTS: TEER induced changes in fibrinogen levels (P = 0.01, V3 vs. V2) and improved fibrin clot properties over a 50-day follow-up (Ks, P = 0.01, V3 vs. V2). No significant differences were observed among time points in analyzed blood clot parameters. Correlation analysis showed that baseline CLT was significantly associated with delta NT-proBNP, (P = 0.049; r = 0.40). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that baseline CLT was an independent predictor of the early post-TEER NT-proBNP change (R2 = 0.55, P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: We found that fibrinogen levels decreased, and permeation coefficient increased over a median 50-day post-TEER follow-up, compared to early post-procedure assessments. Other blood coagulation parameters remained unchanged from baseline to both follow-up periods after TEER. Finally, CLT was an independent predictor of early NT-proBNP increase, emphasizing its role as an indicator of the hemodynamic response to TEER.

Influenza A virus (IAV) is a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus and a common cause of seasonal flu in humans. Its genome comprises eight RNA segments that facilitate reassortment, resulting in a great variety of IAV strains. To study these processes, the genetic code of each segment should be unraveled. Fortunately, new third-generation sequencing approaches allow for cost-efficient sequencing of IAV segments. Sequencing success depends on various factors, including proper sample storage and processing. Hence, this work focused on the effect of storage of oral fluids and swIAV sequencing. Oral fluids (n = 13) from 2017 were stored at -22 °C and later transferred to -80 °C. Other samples (n = 21) were immediately stored at -80 °C. A reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) pre- and post-storage was conducted to assess IAV viral loads. Next, samples were subjected to two IAV long-read nanopore sequencing methods to evaluate success in this complex matrix. A significant storage-associated loss of swIAV loads was observed. Still, a total of 17 complete and 6 near-complete Polish swIAV genomes were obtained. Genotype T, (H1avN2, seven herds), P (H1N1pdm09, two herds), U (H1avN1, three herds), and A (H1avN1, 1 herd) were circulated on Polish farms. In conclusion, oral fluids can be used for long-read swIAV sequencing when considering appropriate storage and segment amplification protocols, which allows us to monitor swIAV in an animal-friendly and cost-efficient manner.

The aim of the current study was to produce biocarbons through the activation of carbon dioxide with the extraction residues of the fungus Inonotus obliquus. To achieve this goal, a microwave oven was used to apply three different activation temperatures: 500, 600, and 700 °C. Low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption was employed to determine the elemental composition, acid-base properties, and textural parameters of the resulting carbon adsorbents. Subsequently, the produced biocarbons were evaluated for their efficiency in removing malachite green and NO2. The adsorbent obtained by activation of the precursor in 700 °C had a specific surface area of 743 m2/g. In the aqueous malachite green solution, the highest measured sorption capacity was 176 mg/g. Conversely, under dry conditions, the sorption capacity for NO2 on this biocarbon was 21.4 mg/g, and under wet conditions, it was 40.9 mg/g. According to the experimental findings, surface biocarbons had equal-energy active sites that interacted with the dye molecules. A pseudo-second-order kinetics model yielded the most accurate results, indicating that the adsorption of malachite green was driven by chemisorption. Additionally, the study demonstrates a clear correlation between the adsorption capacity of the biocarbons and the pH level of the solution, as it increases proportionately.
