RESUMO

Water resources sustainability in High Mountain Asia (HMA) surrounding the Tibetan Plateau (TP)-known as Asia's water tower-has triggered widespread concerns because HMA protects millions of people against water stress1,2. However, the mechanisms behind the heterogeneous trends observed in terrestrial water storage (TWS) over the TP remain poorly understood. Here we use a Lagrangian particle dispersion model and satellite observations to attribute about 1 Gt of monthly TWS decline in the southern TP during 2003-2016 to westerlies-carried deficit in precipitation minus evaporation (PME) from the southeast North Atlantic. We further show that HMA blocks the propagation of PME deficit into the central TP, causing a monthly TWS increase by about 0.5 Gt. Furthermore, warming-induced snow and glacial melt as well as drying-induced TWS depletion in HMA weaken the blocking of HMA's mountains, causing persistent northward expansion of the TP's TWS deficit since 2009. Future projections under two emissions scenarios verified by satellite observations during 2020-2021 indicate that, by the end of the twenty-first century, up to 84% (for scenario SSP245) and 97% (for scenario SSP585) of the TP could be afflicted by TWS deficits. Our findings indicate a trajectory towards unsustainable water systems in HMA that could exacerbate downstream water stress.

BACKGROUND: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is known to be associated with a negative emotional state. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are important tools for evaluating the endpoints of AF management. This study aims to examine the correlation between personality types and PROs in patients with AF. METHODS: All included subjects were newly diagnosed with AF fewer than one month, and their personality types were assessed using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Quality of life (QoL) was measured using the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality of Life (AFEQT) questionnaire. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the General Anxiety Scale (GAD-7) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. We constructed stepwise linear regression analyses for factors related to the QoL and emotional state in patients with AF. RESULTS: A total of 531 AF patients completed the survey and were categorized into four groups based on their personality types. Of these patients (mean age: 67.12 ± 10.93 years, 50.28% male), 357 (67.23%) had paroxysmal AF, and 16.95% (n = 90) had a sanguine personality. Compared to patients with other personality types, those with a sanguine personality had the highest average AFEQT scores (P < 0.001) and the lowest scores of GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales (P < 0.05). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analyses suggested that sanguine personality was also independently associated with better QoL and emotional states (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There is a significant association between the personality types and PROs in AF patients.

The future trend in global automobile development is electrification, and the current collector is an essential component of the battery in new energy vehicles. Aiming at the misjudgment and omission caused by the confusing distribution, a wide range of sizes and types, and ambiguity of target defects in current collectors, an improved target detection model DCS-YOLO (DC-SoftCBAM YOLO) based on YOLOv5 is proposed. Firstly, the detection rate of defects with different scales is improved by adding detection layers; Secondly, we use the designed DC module as the backbone network to help the model capture the global information and semantic dependencies of the target, and effectively improve the generalization ability and detection performance of the model. Finally, in the neck part, we integrate our designed Convolutional Block Attention Module (SoftPool Convolutional Block Attention Module, SoftCBAM), which can adaptively learn the importance of channels, enhance feature representation, and enable the model to better deal with target details. Experimental results show that the mAP50 of the proposed DCS-YOLO model is 92.2%, which is 5.1% higher than the baseline model. The FPS reaches 147.1, and the detection accuracy of various defect categories is improved, especially Severely bad and No cover, and the detection recall rate reaches 100%. This method has high target detection model efficiency and meets the requirements of real-time detection of battery collector defects.

BACKGROUND: Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index values are a new surrogate marker for insulin resistance. This study aimed to explore the relationship between cumulative TyG index values and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). METHODS: A total of 576 patients with AF who underwent RFCA at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were included in this study. The participants were grouped based on cumulative TyG index values tertiles within 3 months after ablation. Cox regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to determine the relationship between cumulative TyG index values and AF recurrence. The predictive value of all risk factors was assessed by receiver operating curve analysis. RESULTS: There were 375 patients completed the study (age: 63.23 ± 10.73 years, 64.27% male). The risk of AF recurrence increased with increasing cumulative TyG index values tertiles. After adjusting for potential confounders, patients in the medium cumulative TyG index group [hazard ratio (HR) = 4.949, 95% CI: 1.778-13.778, P = 0.002] and the high cumulative TyG index group (HR = 8.716, 95% CI: 3.371-22.536, P < 0.001) had a higher risk of AF recurrence than those in the low cumulative TyG index group. The restricted cubic spline regression model also showed an increased risk of AF recurrence with increasing cumulative TyG index values. When considering cumulative TyG index values, left atrial diameter, and lactate dehydrogenase levels as a comprehensive factor, the model could effectively predict AF recurrence after RFCA [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.847, 95% CI: 0.797-0.897, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: Cumulative TyG index values were a risk factor for AF recurrence after RFCA. Monitoring longitudinal TyG index values may assist with optimized for risk stratification and outcome prediction for AF recurrence.

Heatwaves have afflicted human health, ecosystem, and socioeconomy and are expected to intensify under warming climate. However, few efforts have been directed to moist heat stress (MHS) considering relative humidity and wind speed, and moist heat stress risk (MHSR) considering exposure and vulnerability. Here we showed MHS and MHSR variations across China during 1998-2100 using China Meteorological Administration Land Data Assimilation System datasets, the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) merged datasets, Gross Domestic Product, population and leaf area index. We detected increased MHS across China under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). Specifically, the historical MHS occurred mostly during mid-July to mid-August. We found increasing trends of 0.08%/year, 0.249%/year, and 0.669%/year in the MHS-affected areas under SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585, respectively. Furthermore, we observed the highest increasing rate of MHSR in Northwest and Southwest China, while the MHSR across Northeast and North China under SSP126 shifted from increasing to decreasing trends. Noteworthy is that the increasing trend of MHSR under SSP585 is 1.5-2.6 times larger than that under SSP245, especially in North and South China. This study highlights spatiotemporal evolutions of MHS and MHSR and mitigation to moisture heat stress in a warming climate.

Eurasia, home to ~70% of global population, is characterized by (semi-)arid climate. Water scarcity in the mid-latitude Eurasia (MLE) has been exacerbated by a consistent decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS), attributed primarily to human activities. However, the atmospheric mechanisms behind such TWS decline remain unclear. Here, we investigate teleconnections between drying in low-latitude North Atlantic Ocean (LNATO) and TWS depletions across MLE. We elucidate mechanistic linkages and detecte high correlations between decreased TWS in MLE and the decreased precipitation-minus-evapotranspiration (PME) in LNATO. TWS in MLE declines by ~257% during 2003-2017 due to northeastward propagation of PME deficit following two distinct seasonal landfalling routes during January-May and June-January. The same mechanism reduces TWS during 2031-2050 by ~107% and ~447% under scenarios SSP245 and SSP585, respectively. Our findings highlight the risk of increased future water scarcity across MLE caused by large-scale climatic drivers, compounding the impacts of human activities.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comprehensive analysis of prospectively measuring the concentration of soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) to predict left atrial (LA) low-voltage areas (LVAs) and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA). METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. A total of 84 patients, including 54 paroxysmal AF cases and 30 persistent AF cases who underwent RFA, were recruited. Electroanatomical voltage mapping determined the extent of LVAs. The serum level of sST2 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients were followed for 12 months after the RFA procedure to verify AF recurrence. RESULTS: The concentration of sST2 measured in the sample was 17.90-198.77 pg/mL, and the range of LA LVAs was 0-85.6%. The sST2 level positively correlated with LVAs (r = 0.40; P = 0.005). When comparing the top and bottom quartile, sST2 is significantly associated with LA LVAs (OR = 1.833, 95% CI: 1.582-2.011, P = 0.004). When compared with the 1st quartile group, the multivariable adjusted hazard ratios for AF recurrence after RFA were 1.57 (95% CI: 1.182-1.795) for the 4th quartile group, 1.44 (95% CI: 1.085-1.598) for the 3rd quartile group, and 1.27 (95% CI: 0.954-1.318) for the 2nd quartile group. The AF-free survival rates of patients with 1st quartile and 4th quartile sST2 levels after ablation were 95% and 59.6%, respectively (Log Rank test, P = 0.027). CONCLUSION: Elevated sST2 levels of AF patients were associated with higher LA LVAs and a significantly increased risk of recurrence. The circulating sST2 concentration might be a pre-diagnostic marker of AF recurrence after RFA.

Summary. Oxidative stress is an important factor that is related to endothelial dysfunction. ATP-binding cassette transporter G1 (ABCG1), a regulator of intracellular cholesterol efflux, has been found to prevent endothelial activation in vessel walls. To explore the role of ABCG1 in oxidative stress production in endothelial cells, HUAECs were exposed to H2O2 and transfected with the specific ABCG1 siRNA or ABCG1 overexpression plasmid. The results showed that overexpression of ABCG1 by ABCG1 plasmid or liver X receptor (LXR) agonist T0901317 treatment inhibited ROS production and MDA content induced by H2O2 in HUAECs. Furthermore, ABCG1 upregulation blunted the activity of prooxidant NADPH oxidase and the expression of Nox4, one of the NADPH oxidase subunits. Moreover, the increased migration of Nrf2 from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and antioxidant HO-1 expression were detected in HUAECs with upregulation of ABCG1. Conversely, ABCG1 downregulation by ABCG1 siRNA increased NADPH oxidase activity and Nox4 expression and abrogated the increase at Nrf2 nuclear protein levels. In addition, intracellular cholesterol load interfered with the balance between NADPH oxidase activity and HO-1 expression. It was suggested that ABCG1 attenuated oxidative stress induced by H2O2 in endothelial cells, which might be involved in the balance between decreased NADPH oxidase activity and increased Nrf2/OH-1 antioxidant defense signaling via its regulation for intracellular cholesterol accumulation.
