RESUMO

Developing versatile systems that can concurrently achieve energy saving and energy generation is critical to accelerate carbon neutrality. However, challenges on designing highly effective, large scale, and multifunctional photonic film hinder the concurrent combination of passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) and utilization of sustainable clean energies. Herein, a versatile scalable photonic film (Ecoflex@h-BN) with washable property and excellent mechanical stability is developed by combining the excellent scattering efficiency of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoplates with the high infrared emissivity and ideal triboelectric negative property of the Ecoflex matrix. Strikingly, sufficiently high solar reflectance (0.92) and ideal emissivity (0.97) endow the Ecoflex@h-BN film with subambient cooling effect of ≈9.5 °C at midday during the continuous outdoor measurements. In addition, the PDRC Ecoflex@h-BN film-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PDRC-TENG) exhibits a maximum peak power density of 0.5 W m-2 . By reasonable structure design, the PDRC-TENG accomplishes effective wind energy harvesting and can successfully drive the electronic device. Meanwhile, an on-skin PDRC-TENG is fabricated to harvest human motion energy and monitor moving states. This research provides a novel design of a multifunctional PDRC photonic film, and offers a versatile strategy to realize concurrent PDRC and sustainable energies harvesting.

RESUMO

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) materials with sustainable energy harvesting capability is critical to concurrently reduce traditional cooling energy utilized for thermal comfort and transfer natural clean energies into electricity. Herein, a versatile photonic film (Ecoflex@BTO@UAFL) based on a novel fluorescent luminescence color passive radiative cooling with triboelectric and piezoelectric effect is developed by filling the dielectric BaTiO3 (BTO) nanoparticles and ultraviolet absorption fluorescent luminescence (UAFL) powder into the elastic Ecoflex matrix. Test results demonstrate that the Ecoflex@BTO@UAFL photonic film exhibits a maximum passive radiative cooling effect of ∽10.1 °C in the daytime. Meanwhile, its average temperature drop in the daytime is ~4.48 °C, which is 0.91 °C higher than that of the Ecoflex@BTO photonic film (3.56 °C) due to the addition of UAFL material. Owing to the high dielectric constant and piezoelectric effect of BTO nanoparticles, the maximum power density (0.53 W m-2, 1 Hz @ 10 N) of the Ecoflex@BTO photonic film-based hybrid nanogenerator is promoted by 70.9% compared to the Ecoflex film-based TENG. This work provides an ingenious strategy for combining PDRC effects with triboelectric and piezoelectric properties, which can spontaneously achieve thermal comfort and energy conservation, offering a new insight into multifunctional energy saving.

Lasers play a significant role in optical communication, medical, and scientific research, owing to their high brightness and high coherence. However, the high spatial coherence will lead to specific challenges, such as speckle noise in imaging and wavefront distortion during propagation through scattering media. Here, a continuous-wave (cw) degenerate cavity laser (DCL) with low spatial coherence is demonstrated with efficient suppression of the thermal lensing effect from the gain crystal. Experimentally, a cw degenerate laser output with about 2000 transverse modes corresponding to a speckle contrast of about 0.0224 is achieved. This laser can be used for speckle reduction and is robust against atmospheric turbulence, which may find applications in the field of laser imaging technology and illumination.

BACKGROUND: China experienced an overwhelming COVID-19 pandemic from middle December 2022 to middle January 2023 after lifting the zero-COVID-19 policy on December 7, 2022. However, the infection rate was less studied. We aimed to investigate the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate in children shortly after discontinuation of the zero-COVID-19 policy. METHODS: From February 20 to April 10, 2023, we included 393 children aged 8 months to less than 3 years who did not receive COVID-19 vaccination and 114 children aged 3 to 6 years who received inactivated COVID-19 vaccines based on the convenience sampling in this cross-sectional study. IgG and IgM antibodies against nucleocapsid (N) and subunit 1 of spike (S1) of SARS-CoV-2 (anti-N/S1) were measured with commercial kits (Shenzhen YHLO Biotech, China). RESULTS: Of the 393 unvaccinated children (1.5 ± 0.6 years; 52.2% boys), 369 (93.9%) were anti-N/S1 IgG positive. Of the 114 vaccinated children (5.3 ± 0.9 years; 48.2% boys), 112 (98.2%) were anti-N/S1 IgG positive. None of the unvaccinated or vaccinated children was anti-N/S1 IgM positive. The median IgG antibody titers in vaccinated children (344.91 AU/mL) were significantly higher than that in unvaccinated children (42.80 AU/mL) (P < 0.0001). The positive rates and titers of anti-N/S1 IgG had no significant difference between boys and girls respectively. CONCLUSION: Vast majority of children were infected with SARS-CoV-2 shortly after ending zero-COVID-19 policy in China. Whether these unvaccinated infected children should receive COVID-19 vaccine merits further investigation.

Dihydrochalcones (DHCs) constitute a specific class of flavonoids widely known for their various health-related advantages. Melatonin (MLT) has received attention worldwide as a master regulator in plants, but its roles in DHC accumulation remain unclear. Herein, the elicitation impacts of MLT on DHC biosynthesis were examined in Lithocarpus litseifolius, a valuable medicinal plant famous for its sweet flavor and anti-diabetes effect. Compared to the control, the foliar application of MLT significantly increased total flavonoid and DHC (phlorizin, trilobatin, and phloretin) levels in L. litseifolius leaves, especially when 100 µM MLT was utilized for 14 days. Moreover, antioxidant enzyme activities were boosted after MLT treatments, resulting in a decrease in the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species. Remarkably, MLT triggered the biosynthesis of numerous phytohormones linked to secondary metabolism (salicylic acid, methyl jasmonic acid (MeJA), and ethylene), while reducing free JA contents in L. litseifolius. Additionally, the flavonoid biosynthetic enzyme activities were enhanced by the MLT in leaves. Multiple differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in RNA-seq might play a crucial role in MLT-elicited pathways, particularly those associated with the antioxidant system (SOD, CAT, and POD), transcription factor regulation (MYBs and bHLHs), and DHC metabolism (4CL, C4H, UGT71K1, and UGT88A1). As a result, MLT enhanced DHC accumulation in L. litseifolius leaves, primarily by modulating the antioxidant activity and co-regulating the physiological, hormonal, and transcriptional pathways of DHC metabolism.

Free space optical (FSO) communication has gained widespread attention due to its advantages, including high confidentiality, high communication capacity, and no limitation of spectrum. One of the great challenges in FSO communication is the transmission performance degradation in atmospheric turbulence channel due to wavefront distortion and scintillation. Here, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a 120 Gbit/s vector beam multiplexed coherent optical communication system with turbulence-resilient capacity. Four multiplexed vector beams, each carrying a 30 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signal, propagate through different turbulence conditions. The influence of turbulence channel on the vector beam impairments is experimentally investigated. Under the weaker turbulence conditions, the system bit error rates are below the forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. In comparison with the Gaussian mode, the communication interruption probability of the vector beams system decreases from 36% to 12%-18% under stronger turbulence conditions.

For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we experimentally demonstrate a high-speed free-space secure optical communication system based on all-optical chaos modulation. The effect of atmospheric turbulence on optical chaos synchronization is experimentally investigated via a hot air convection atmospheric turbulence simulator. It is shown that, even under moderately strong turbulent conditions, high-quality chaos synchronization could be obtained by increasing the transmission power. Moreover, a secure encryption transmission experiment using a high bias current induced chaotic carrier for 8-Gbit/s on-off-keying data over a ∼10-m free-space optical link is successfully demonstrated, with a bit-error rate below the FEC threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. This work favorably shows the feasibility of optical chaotic encryption for the free-space optical transmission system.

Spatial wavefront control and high-Q spectral filtering are both of great importance for various optical applications, such as eye-tracking for eyewear, planar optical modulators, and optical sensing. However, it is a great challenge to simultaneously satisfy these two functionalities in a metasurface due to the inevitable conflicts of local and non-local modes, where local modes of a single meta-atom manipulate the wavefront in a broadband range, while non-local collective modes of extended meta-atoms only support high-Q resonances at certain characteristic wavelengths. Here, we demonstrate a low-contrast dielectric non-local meta-grating that provides both spatial and spectral control of light in a broadband range of 700-1600 nm, offering elaborate wavefront shaping only for narrow-band resonances. Such counterintuitive functionality is supported by spatially tailored dark modes (quasi-bound states in the continuum) encoding with spatially varying geometric phases, while low-contrast dielectric provides broadband non-resonant transmission. Moreover, a broadband transparent polarization meta-grating with two resonance wavelengths is presented. Non-local geometric-phase metasurfaces open an exciting avenue for wavefront shaping and spectral manipulation, and may have potential applications in sensing, lasing, and spectral filtering.

BACKGROUND: Acerola cherry is a famous functional fruit containing plentiful antioxidants and other nutrients. However, studies on the variations among nutrients during the ripening process of acerola fruit are scare. RESULTS: Comparative metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses were performed and identified 31 331 unigenes and 1896 annotated metabolite features in acerola cherry fruit. K Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analysis showed that several antioxidant and nutrient-related metabolic pathways, such as the flavonoids, vitamins, carotenoids, amino acids, and fatty acids metabolic pathways, were significantly changed during the ripening process. The metabolites related to the vitamin, carotenoid, and fatty acid metabolic pathways were downregulated during the ripening process. Several flavonoid biosynthesis-related genes (including dihydroflavonol 4-reductase, chalcone synthase, flavanone 3-hydroxylase, and anthocyanidin synthase), were significantly upregulated, suggesting their essential functions in the accumulation of flavonoids in mature fruit. CONCLUSION: Most of the vitamin and carotenoid metabolism-related metabolites significantly accumulated in immature fruit, suggesting that immature acerola fruit is a good material for the extraction of vitamins and carotenoids. For macronutrients, most of the amino acids accumulated in mature fruit and most of the fatty acids greatly accumulated in immature fruit. Our data revealed the differential accumulation of antioxidants and nutrients during the ripening process of acerola cherry fruit. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

We investigate the topology optimization of geometric phase metasurfaces for wide-angle and high-efficiency deflection, where adjoint-based multi-object optimization approach is adopted to improve the absolute efficiency while maintaining the polarization conversion characteristic of geometric phase metasurfaces. We show that, for the initially discrete geometric phase metasurfaces with different materials and working wavelengths, the topology shapes gradually evolve from discrete structures to quasi-continuous arrangements with the increment of optimization iteration operations. More importantly, the finally optimized metasurfaces manifest as catenary-like structure, providing significant improvements of absolute efficiency. Furthermore, for the initial structure with catenary distribution, the corresponding optimized metasurface also has a catenary-like topology shape. Our results on the topology-optimized geometric phase metasurfaces reveal that, from the perspective of numerical optimization, the continuous catenary metasurfaces is superior to the discrete geometric phase metasurfaces.

RESUMO

Pancharatnam-Berry geometric phase has attracted enormous interest in subwavelength optics and electromagnetics during the past several decades. Traditional theory predicts that the geometric phase is equal to twice the rotation angle of anisotropic elements. Here, we show that high-order geometric phases equal to multiple times the rotation angle could be achieved by meta-atoms with highfold rotational symmetries. As a proof of concept, the broadband angular spin Hall effect of light and optical vortices is experimentally demonstrated by using plasmonic metasurfaces consisting of space-variant nanoapertures with C2, C3, and C5 rotational symmetries. The results provide a fundamentally new understanding of the geometric phase as well as light-matter interaction in nanophotonics.

RESUMO

Two new abietane diterpenoids (1,2), along with five known diterpenoids (3-7), were first isolated and purified from the stems of Clerodendrum bracteatum. The structures of the new compounds were established by extensive analysis of mass spectrometric and 1-D, 2-D NMR spectroscopic data. Their antioxidant activities were determined on DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of the compounds were evaluated against the HL-60 and A549 cell lines by the MTT method.

BACKGROUND: The influence of epicatechin (EC) on the physicochemical properties and digestibility changes of porcine myofibrillar protein (MP) under oxidative stress during refrigerated storage was investigated. RESULTS: The incubation of MP suspensions (20 mg mL-1 in piperazine-N,N'-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid) buffer, with 0.6 mol L-1 sodium chloride, pH 6.25) at 4 °C for 24 h under an iron-catalyzed hydroxyl radical generating system (Fenton reaction) promoted the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and protein carbonyls, which was attenuated by EC (5, 50, and 100 µmol g-1 protein). Reduced protein sulfhydryl content, tryptophan fluorescence, protein solubility, as well as increased surface hydrophobicity were found by the co-incubation of EC. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy revealed increased protein aggregation and fragments in oxidized MP, which were further enhanced by the addition of EC. However, the protein digestibility of MP was not affected. CONCLUSION: EC was demonstrated to be effective in alleviating lipid oxidation and protein carbonylation in MP under oxidative stress. Additionally, the physicochemical and digestibility changes accompanying the incorporation of EC was complicated due to the possible phenol-protein interactions. An in-depth understanding of protein physicochemical and digestibility changes will be helpful in the application of polyphenolic compounds as antioxidants in low-temperature-processed muscle foods. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Integration of optical waveguide and subwavelength structure may help address the problems of large footprint, low robustness, and small operation bandwidth, those of that are typically inborn in traditional integrated optical devices. Here, a design method of an ultra-compact small footprint lens is proposed. Combing particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with spatial multiplexing technology, we successfully integrated two- and four-step varifocal lenses on SOIs chips with small footprint of 35×35 µm2, non-mechanically leading to 2.5× and 3.4× zoom capacity, respectively. The proposed designed method may shed a new light on compact on-chip display devices and offer an alternative approach to design integrated optical communication with high information storage capacity.

Super-oscillation phenomenon has attracted considerable interests due to its great ability of far-field super-resolution imaging. However, most super-oscillatory lenses were limited by chromatic aberration and single functionality, hence deeply restricting the flexibility of the super-oscillatory devices in practical applications. Here, an achromatic polarization-multiplexed super-oscillatory metasurface has been proposed to realize flexible light field modulations at different colors, i.e. 473 nm (blue), 532 nm (green), and 632.8 nm (red). The super-oscillatory metasurface can achieve achromatic diffraction-limited focusing under x-polarized light illumination and achromatic sub-diffraction focusing under y-polarized light illumination. Furthermore, it can also realize multi-wavelength super-oscillatory achromatic focusing with different super-resolution abilities. The proposed method could simplify the super-resolution optical imaging system and is expected to have widespread applications in color imaging, microscopy, and machine vision.

The isochronous cluster synchronization with time delay (TD) signature suppression in delay-coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) networks subject to variable-polarization optical injection (VPOI) is theoretically and numerically studied. Based on the inherent symmetries of network topology, parameter spaces for stable cluster synchronization are presented, and zero-lag synchronization are achieved for VCSELs in same clusters. Additionally, the TD signature reduction for the dynamics of VCSELs in the stable clusters are systematically discussed. It is shown that both moderate polarizer angle and frequency detuning between different clusters have strengthen the effect of TD signature suppression. Moreover, the isochronous cluster synchronization with TD signature concealment is also verified in another VPOI-VCSEL network with different topology, indicating the generality of proposed results. Our results shed a new light on the research of chaos synchronization and chaos-based secure communications in VCSEL networks.

We estimated canopy structure and transmitted radiation using hemispherical photography in four monitoring years (2008-2010, 2016) following the 2008 huge ice storm in a subtropical forest in south China, so as to assess changes in canopy biophysical parameters during forest recovery from natural disturbance. Significant decrease in canopy openness (CO), transmitted direct radiation (TransDir), and transmitted diffuse radiation (TransDif), as well as significant increase in leaf area index (LAI), were found in the disturbed forest stand in the subsequent years following the ice storm, indicating rapid canopy recovery. In contrast, these biophysical parameters of the undisturbed forest stand were quite stable during the monitoring years. The strength of relationships between CO and other canopy biophysical parameters decreased in the disturbed stand along the monitoring years. The disturbed stand had common slopes for the CO-TransDir and CO-TransDif models in the first two monitoring years, but different slopes for the CO-LAI model between the first and the subsequent monitoring years, while the undisturbed stand had common slopes for all the regression models in the first three monitoring years following the huge ice storm. These results showed that stronger correlations of LAI or TransDir with CO were characteristic of less complex canopies, such as those damaged by disturbance; the sensitivity of transmitted radiation in response to CO decreased with canopy recovery. Our findings demonstrated that forests with different canopy structure varied in biophysical parameters, which can be quantified by hemispherical photography.

The cluster synchronization of mutually coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) networks subject to variable-polarization optical feedback (VPOF) with symmetric structure is theoretically investigated. Zero-lag synchronization could be achieved between different VCSELs within same cluster in such networks, which is solely derived from the intrinsic symmetry of network topology. The influences of significant parameters of VCSELs networks on the stability of cluster synchronization are further discussed. Moreover, it is shown that the polarizer angle of optical feedback in VCSELs plays a particularly important role on the formation of cluster.

We study the interference patterns from an inclined capillary tube filled with liquid by using the ray tracing method and interference theory. A beautiful elliptical pattern is found on the screen, with refined fringes embedded in it. Particularly, the fringes on top of the pattern are continuously swallowed to the center with the angle of incidence increasing. In addition, a method is demonstrated to determine the refractive index of the liquid and the wavelength of the incident light by measuring the capillary tilt of every 10-fringe being swallowed, which looks like fringe crossover, with respect to the change of the inclined angle of the capillary.

A new abeo-abietane diterpenoid, 12-methoxy-6,11,14,16-tetrahydroxy-17(15→16)-abeo-5,8,11,13-abietatetraen-3,7-dione (8), was isolated from the hydroalcoholic extract of the herb of Clerodendrum kiangsiense along with seven known diterpenoids (1-7). Their structures were identified on the basis of spectroscopic analyses including two-dimensional NMR and comparison with literature data. All of these compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities against the growth of human cancer cells lines HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549 and MCF-7 by the MTT assay. The results showed that cryptojaponol (4), fortunin E (6) and 8 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against four human cancer cell lines.
