[Correlative study between X-ray type after healing of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia in children and postoperative refracture].

Objective: To investigate the relationship between postoperative X-ray type in 2 years after healing of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia(CPT) and refracture of CPT in children. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 67 children patients with Crawford type Ⅳ CPT who were treated with combined surgeries from December 2007 to August 2012.There were 46 male and 21 female patients with 37 cases with left CPT and 30 cases with right CPT. There were 12 cases with proximal tibia dysplasia, 56 cases with neurofibromatosis type 1. The median age when operation was 2.8 years(from 0.6 to 11.2 years). The patients were divided into three groups, CPT with hypertrophic group, CPT with mediate group and CPT with atrophic group, on the basis of ratio of healing cross-sectional area and transition zone in pseudarthrosis.The incidence of refracture in the three groups were investigated. Results: The refracture rates of three groups were 13%(5/38), 14%(3/21), 5/8, respectively.The refracture rate difference between CPT with hypertrophic group and CPT with mediate group was not statistically significant(P=0.590). The refracture rate of CPT with atrophic group was statistically significant lower than that of CPT with hypertrophic group and CPT with mediate group(P=0.007, 0.019). In addition, the refracture-free cumulative survival rate of CPT with hypertrophic group or CPT with mediate group was higher than that of CPT with atrophic group with the statistically significant difference(both P<0.05). And the refracture-free cumulative survival rate in CPT with hypertrophic group was lower than that in CPT with mediate group, the difference was not significant(P>0.05). Conclusion: After the union of CPT, patients with hypertrophic, mediate type X ray characteristic showed lower incidence of refracture than those with atrophic type.

[Preliminary study on health effects in the residents exposed to liquefied petroleum gas].

Combustion of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can cause indoor air pollution with sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, total suspended particulate (TSP) and total hydrocarbons. Mice exposed to the pollutant air for three months showed lower ANAE, prolonged sleep time, increased PCE micronucleus in bone marrow, high positivity in Ames test for the lung homogenate and deformity of sperm in males, with obvious dose-response relationship. Investigation on a human population exposed to LPG for more than five years revealed irritating symptoms in respiratory tract, nose and eyes, and prevalence of pharyngitis, rhinitis and conjunctivitis increased significantly. Positive Ames test and micronucleus test in peripheral erythrocytes were detected in concentrated urine samples collected from them. It is postulated this may be associated with the mutagenic pollutants contained in the waste gas emitted by combustion of LPG.

[An ultrahistochemical study of the trabecular meshwork in normal and open-angle glaucomatous eyes].

The acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPs) in the human trabecular meshwork were studied ultrahistochemically with hyaluronidase and chondroitinase ABC digestion in 15 normal eyes and 27 cases of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). It was found that in normal eyes, hyaluronidase-sensitive AMPs existed in the connective tissue of cribriform meshwork and trabeculae. They could play an important role in regulating the aqueous outflow resistance. In POAG, the amount of AMPs in the trabecular meshwork was increased, leading to increased aqueous outflow resistance through the combination of hyaluronic acid with water, forming electron-dense "plaque" materials in a matrix of chondroitin sulfate.

[Establishment and characterization of a human retinoblastoma cell line SO-Rb50].

A human retinoblastoma (Rb) continuous cell line SO-Rb 50 was first established in China from an original tumor of a Chinese baby girl who had no family history of Rb. 33 days after initial culturing, SO-Rb 50 was subcultured and transfers have been made for over 23 months. The SO-Rb 50 cells grow in suspension as clusters with ring formation; their histopathologic and ultrastructural pictures demonstrated characteristics of Rb and were positive to NSE and negative to GFAP in immunohistochemical staining. Heterotransplantation of the cells into NC athymic nude mice was successful in 1/6 of the mice.

[An analytic study of metastatic carcinoma to the uvea].

The authors analyzed 107 cases of metastatic carcinoma to the uvea, 21 cases from their hospital and 86 cases from Chinese literature, to find no predilection for either eye and that the tumor originated from the lung in 45 cases (42.1%) and from the breast in 14 cases (13.1%). Among 43 cases of lung cancer with records, 33 cases reported visual symptoms as their first complaints while none of the 14 cases of breast cancer so did. This could have been due to the higher incidence of lung carcinoma which was also less readily detected.

[Retinoblastoma: cell origin and differentiation].

50 retinoblastoma paraffin blocks were studied immunohistochemically (NSE, GFAP) and histochemically (colloidal-iron, RNA), and 13 cases by EM. The Rb cells demonstrated varying degrees of positive or negative reaction to NSE, most F-W and H-W rosettes being positive and the fleuretes weakly positive or negative. The GFAP positive cells were mainly found in the periphery of the tumor mass and around the blood vessels, and sparsely among the NSE positive cells. Fleuretes were clearly shown by RNA-Brachet staining. F-W rosettes and fleuretes showed similar ultrastructures as the photoreceptor of normal retina. The results confirmed that retinoblastoma originates from the retinoblast with potential of differentiation into photoreceptors and neurons. The glial components pertained to reactive gliosis, however, the rare possibility of forming a small portion of the tumor could not be ruled out.

[Heterotransplantation of the SO-Rb50 cell line into athymic "nude" mice].

Suspension of the SO-Rb50 cell line of human retinoblastoma was injected into the anterior chamber of the right eye and the dorso-cervical subcutaneous tissue each of 7 athymic "nude" mice separately. Intraocular transplanted tumors resulted in all 7 mice of the first group while subcutaneous transplanted tumor occurred only in 1 mouse of the second group. The clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the transplanted tumors were similar to those of human Rb. The proptosis of the tumor eyes, the variation in tumor cell differentiation and the significance of animal models were discussed.

[Macular, lattice and granular dystrophy of the cornea: ultra-histochemistry and ultrastructure study].

Keratoplasty specimens from 19 patients with macular corneal dystrophy (MCD), 11 patients with lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD) and 2 patients with granular corneal dystrophy (GCD) were examined by combinations of histochemistry, electron microscopy and electron--histochemistry. Electron histochemistry disclosed that the deposits of MCD have sulfate chondroitin and another hyaluronidase--resistant glycoaminoglycan and that the deposits of LCD have a little sulfate chondroitin. The authors suggest: (1) the possible pathologic mechanism of MCD is that the keratocytes and endothelial cells synthesize abnormal fibrillogranular material which consists of glycoaminoglycan, glycoprotein and lipid; (2) LCD is a primary localized corneal amyloidosis in which the amyloid deposits may result from corneal epithelial cells and keratocytes with a little sulfate chondroitin; (3) the deposits synthesized by corneal epithelial cells and keratocytes in GCD may result from a genetic defect in processing or synthesizing proteins.

Specific antitumor immunologic reactivity in patients with retinoblastoma.

Retinoblastoma antigen (RbAg) and retinal tissue antigen (RAg) were made from allogeneic retinoblastoma tissues and normal retinal tissue using the 3M KCl method. We have examined leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to RbAg and RAg in normal controls and the patients with retinoblastoma, including two spontaneously regressed cases. In LMIT, six out of the 11 patients tested against RhAg showed positive reactivity, in which 4 cases reacted only with RbAg, but not with RAg. All nine control subjects had negative reactivity to the two antigens. In ELISA, 40% of the retinoblastoma patients and 5.56% in normal controls showed positive reaction against RbAg. It was suggested that not only retinal antigens but also retinoblastoma specific antigens present in human retinoblastoma cells. The results also suggested that patients with retinoblastoma and those with spontaneous regression of Rb had both cell-mediated immunologic reactivity and humoral immune response toward retinoblastoma antigen in vitro. These immune responses to RbAg may be responsible for spontaneous regression of retinoblastoma.

[Manifestations of fluorescein angiography in choroidal melanoma].

This paper reported on the manifestations of fundus fluorescein angiography in 21 patients with choroidal melanoma. According to the findings of fluorescein angiography, we suggest that this disease can be classified into 3 types: type I shows hyperfluorescent mottles (12 cases); type II shows hyperfluorescent spots and patches, (4 cases); type III shows a dark area in the tumor body, (5 cases). The angiographic characteristics of the three types of melanoma and their histopathologic changes are discussed. The differential diagnosis of the three types of melanoma from metastatic choroidal carcinoma, senile macular degeneration with subretinal hemorrhage and choroidal hemangiomas is discussed. For the first time choroid melanoma has been classified into 3 types according to fluorescein angiography. It may contribute to the early diagnosis of this disease.
