RESUMO

Here, a scheme for a controllable nonreciprocal phonon laser is proposed in a hybrid photonic molecule system consisting of a whispering-gallery mode (WGM) optomechanical resonator and a χ(2)-nonlinear WGM resonator, by directionally quantum squeezing one of two coupled resonator modes. The directional quantum squeezing results in a chiral photon interaction between the resonators and a frequency shift of the squeezed resonator mode with respect to the unsqueezed bare mode. We show that the directional quantum squeezing can modify the effective optomechanical coupling in the optomechanical resonator, and analyze the impacts of driving direction and squeezing extent on the phonon laser action in detail. Our analytical and numerical results indicate that the controllable nonreciprocal phonon laser action can be effectively realized in this system. The proposed scheme uses an all-optical and chip-compatible approach without spinning resonators, which may be more beneficial for integrating and packaging of the system on a chip. Our proposal may provide a new route to realize integratable phonon devices for on-chip nonreciprocal phonon manipulations, which may be used in chiral quantum acoustics, topological phononics, and acoustical information processing.

Photon blockade provides an effective way to realize the single-photon source, which attracts intensive attention in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information. Here in this study, we investigate photon blockade in a non-Hermitian indirectly coupled resonator system, which consists of a dissipative cavity and a Kerr nonlinear resonator coupled to two nano-scatters. We find that by tuning the coupling phase θ between the two resonators, the quantum interference could be induced on one side near the exceptional points (EPs), resulting in the unconventional photon blockade effect. Furthermore, it is noticed that the large Kerr nonlinearity is not always beneficial for unconventional photon blockades. There is an optimal threshold for the intensity of the Kerr nonlinearity and the phase angle θ for the appearance of the unconventional photon blockade effect. We believe the current study has substantial consequences for investigating the physical characteristics close to EPs and presents a novel method for developing integrated on-chip single-photon sources.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited kidney disease. Cyst development in ADPKD involves abnormal epithelial cell proliferation, which is affected by the primary cilia-mediated signal transduction in the epithelial cells. Thus, primary cilium has been considered as a therapeutic target for ADPKD. Since ADPKD exhibits many pathological features similar to solid tumors, we investigated whether targeting primary cilia using anti-tumor agents could alleviate the development of ADPKD. Twenty-four natural compounds with anti-tumor activity were screened in MDCK cyst model, and 1-Indanone displayed notable inhibition on renal cyst growth without cytotoxicity. This compound also inhibited cyst development in embryonic kidney cyst model. In neonatal kidney-specific Pkd1 knockout mice, 1-Indanone remarkably slowed down kidney enlargement and cyst expansion. Furthermore, we demonstrated that 1-Indanone inhibited the abnormal elongation of cystic epithelial cilia by promoting tubulin polymerization and significantly down-regulating expression of anterograde transport motor protein KIF3A and IFT88. Moreover, we found that 1-Indanone significantly down-regulated ciliary coordinated Wnt/ß-catenin, Hedgehog signaling pathways. These results demonstrate that 1-Indanone inhibits cystic cell proliferation by reducing abnormally prolonged cilia length in cystic epithelial cells, suggesting that 1-Indanone may hold therapeutic potential to retard cyst development in ADPKD.

With the increasing pervasiveness of mobile devices such as smartphones, smart TVs, and wearables, smart sensing, transforming the physical world into digital information based on various sensing medias, has drawn researchers' great attention. Among different sensing medias, WiFi and acoustic signals stand out due to their ubiquity and zero hardware cost. Based on different basic principles, researchers have proposed different technologies for sensing applications with WiFi and acoustic signals covering human activity recognition, motion tracking, indoor localization, health monitoring, and the like. To enable readers to get a comprehensive understanding of ubiquitous wireless sensing, we conduct a survey of existing work to introduce their underlying principles, proposed technologies, and practical applications. Besides we also discuss some open issues of this research area. Our survey reals that as a promising research direction, WiFi and acoustic sensing technologies can bring about fancy applications, but still have limitations in hardware restriction, robustness, and applicability. The properties of the open quantum system in quantum information is a science now extensively investigated more generally as a fundamental issue for a variety of applications. Usually, the states of the open quantum system might be disturbed by decoherence which will reduce the fidelity in the quantum information processing. So it is better to eliminate the influence of the environment. However, as part of the composite system, rational use of the environment system could be beneficial to quantum information processing. Here we theoretically studied the environment induced quantum nonlinearity and energy spectrum tuning method in the optomechanical system. And we found that the dissipation coupling of the hybrid dissipation and dispersion optomechanical system can induce the coupling between the environment and system in the cross-Kerr interaction form. When the symmetry is broken with a directional auxiliary field, the system exhibits the non-reciprocal behavior during the photon excitation and photon blockade for the clockwise and counterclockwise modes of the whispering gallery mode microcavity. Furthermore, we believe that the cross-Kerr coupling can be more widely used in quantum information processing and quantum simulation.

Optomagnonic structures are widely studied in the field of nanophotonics and quantum information science. They are the key platforms for the realization of magnon-mediated microwave to optical transducers in various applications of quantum computing. In order to enhance the coupling between light (photons) and spin waves (magnons), here in this work, we use the Lagrange multiplication method to find the optimum matching condition between the optical whispering-gallery mode and the magnon with Kittle and higher-order modes in microresonators. It is found that the magnon modes located near the edge of the resonator exhibits stronger coupling strength with the optical modes. Numerically, we find the coupling constant can approach 87.6×2π H z in Kittle mode, and 459×2π H z in high-order magnon mode for a yttrium iron garnet (YIG, Y3Fe5O12 ) microdisk cavity with a radius of 300 microns and a thickness of 10 microns. We believe these results may provide an efficient way for enhancing the magneto-optical interaction in the optical devices, which will facilitate the development of magneto-optical control, optical-microwave interaction, and optical nonlinearity.

The nonlinearity of magnons plays an important role in the study of an optomagnonical system. Here in this paper, we focus on the high-order sideband and frequency comb generation characteristics in the atom coupled optomagnonical resonator. We find that the atom-cavity coupling strength is related to the nonlinear coefficients, and the efficiency of sidebands generation could be reinforced by tuning the polarization of magnons. Besides, we show that the generation of the sidebands could be suppressed under the large dissipation condition. This study provides a novel way to engineer the low-threshold high-order sidebands in hybrid optical microcavities.

Berry phase can be used to generate quantum state which is robust to environmental noises in quantum information processing. Recently, the relationship between Berry phase and quantum phase transition attracts great attention in the research about topological states of matter. Here, we investigate the behavior of Berry phase in an anti parity-time symmetric system consisting of a metal nanoparticle and semiconductor quantum dot. The change of Berry phase undergoes a sudden death around exceptional point, i.e., Berry phase keeps unchanged in symmetry unbroken region, while it can be well adjusted through changing the strength and frequency of input light in symmetry broken region. The result demonstrated in this paper may be of significant importance in quantum computation and topological physics.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Genetic or nutritional deficiencies in homocysteine (Hcy)metabolism lead to the accumulation of Hcy and its metabolites in the blood. This can lead to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), which is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that HHcy leads to endothelial dysfunction, a hallmark of atherosclerosis, which may explain this link. The precise mechanism remains unclear, but a strong possibility is excessive HHCy-induced autophagy. Autophagy has been better studied in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries, and previous work showed that Oxymatrine (OMT), a quinolizidine alkaloid, protects cells against myocardial I/R injury by inhibiting autophagy. The aim of this study was to determine whether OMT inhibits autophagy in HHcy. METHODS: Autophagy in HUVEC cells treated with Hcy in the presence and absence of OMT was visualized bytransmission electron microscopy and the degree was determined by western blotting and qRT-PCR. Small interfering RNA (siRNA)was used to determine the efficiency of Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) inhibition. Cell apoptosis wasdetected by western blotting and flow cytometric analysis. RESULTS: OMT inhibited autophagy, MIF, and mTOR in HUVECs during Hcy exposure, depending on the dose. siRNA-mediated MIF knockdown decreased Hcy-induced autophagy, while administration of 3-methyladenosine and rapamycin showed that they also induce autophagy. Furthermore, OMT dose-dependently inhibited the Hcy-induced HUVEC apoptosis/death. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that Hcy can evokeautophagy-activated HUVEC apoptosis/death via a MIF/mTOR signaling pathway, which can be reversed by OMT. Our results provide a new insight into a functional role of OMT in the prevention of Hcy-induced HUVEC injury and death.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Exposure to arsenic in individuals has been found to be associated with various health-related problems including skin lesions, cancer, and cardiovascular and immunological disorders. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main and active polyphenolic catechin present in green tea, has shown potent antioxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory activity in vivo and in vitro. Thus, the present study was conducted to investigate the protective effects of EGCG against arsenic-induced inflammation and immunotoxicity in mice. METHODS: Serum IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α were determined by ELISA, tissue catalase (CAT), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide and caspase 3 by commercial kits, mitochondrial membrane potential with Rh 123, mitochondrial ROS with 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA), apoptotic and necrotic cells and T-cell phenotyping with Flow cytometry analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that arsenic treatment significantly increased oxidative stress levels (as indicated by catalase, malonyldialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione and reactive oxygen species), increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and promoted apoptosis. Arsenic exposure increased the relative frequency of the CD8+(Tc) cell subpopulation (from 2.8 to 18.9%) and decreased the frequency of CD4+(Th) cells (from 5.2 to 2.7%). Arsenic exposure also significantly decreased the frequency of T(CD3) (from 32.5% to 19.2%) and B(CD19) cells (from 55.1 to 32.5%). All of these effects induced by NaAsO2 were attenuated by EGCG. CONCLUSIONS: The present in vitro findings indicate that EGCG attenuates not only NaAsO2-induced immunosuppression but also inflammation and apoptosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Doxorubicin-induced cardiac toxicity has been a major concern of oncologists and is considered the main restriction on its clinical application. Oxymatrine has shown potent anti-cancer, anti-fibrosis, and anti-oxidative effects. Recently, it has been reported that oxymatrine is protective against some cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of oxymatrine on doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rat hearts and H9c2 cells. METHODS: Creatine Kinase - MB (CK-MB) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined using commercial kits. Biochemical indices reflecting oxidative stress, such as catalase (CAT), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) were also analyzed with commercial kits. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) was measured by fluorescence microscopy. Histological analyses were conducted to observe morphological changes, and apoptosis was measured using a commercial kit. Western blots were used to detect the level of expression of cleaved caspase-3. RESULTS: Doxorubicin treatment significantly increased oxidative stress levels, as indicated by catalase, malonyldialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and reactive oxygen species. Doxorubicin also increased pathological damage in myocardial tissue, myocardial ROS levels, and malonyldialdehyde levels, and induced apoptosis in myocardial tissues and H9c2 cells. All of these doxorubicin-induced effects were attenuated by oxymatrine. CONCLUSION: These in vitro and in vivo findings indicate that oxymatrine may be a promising cardioprotective agent against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, at least in part mediated through oxymatrine's inhibition of cardiac apoptosis and oxidative stress.

Optomechanics describes the interaction between the optical field and mechanics, and the optomechanical system provides an ideal interface between photons and phonons. The role of the electromagnetic field during optomechanical interaction is studied in this paper as it is regarded as a phonon transmission medium. An analytical model is built to study the phononic mode resonance and reveals the transmission properties of the phonons, which are related to the variance of the frequency of the electromagnetic field. Moreover, when one mechanical mode is driven, different mode resonant properties could be achieved on the transmission spectrum of phonons between the two mechanical modes. We believe that the current work provides significant results for the research of phononic devices.

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) are two phenomena that can affect the transmission of a probe field in the presence of a stronger field, both yielding transparency in the absorption profile. Being able to discriminate these two similar but distinct phenomena is of vital importance. Here we propose a scheme to describe the EIT and ATS phenomena in a plasmonic system. The proposed system consists of one radiative resonator and one subradiant resonator in metal-insulator-metal waveguide, and the transition is observed from the ATS model to the EIT model through three qualitative regions as the coupling strength decreases. In addition, we apply the method proposed by Anisimov to the induced transparency spectrum in our model, and numerically discerning EIT from ATS based on the Akaike's information criterion in a clear way.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by lipid infiltration and plaque formation in blood vessel walls. Ganoderic acids (GA), a class of major bioactive compounds isolated from the Chinese traditional medicine Ganoderma lucidum, have multiple pharmacological activities. This study aimed to determine the anti-atherosclerotic effect of GA and reveal the pharmacological mechanism. METHODS: ApoE-/- mice were fed a high-cholesterol diet and treated with GA for 16 weeks to induce AS and identify the effect of GA. Network pharmacological analysis was performed to predict the anti-atherosclerotic mechanisms. An invitro cell model was used to explore the effect of GA on macrophage polarization and the possible mechanism involved in bone marrow dereived macrophages (BMDMs) and RAW264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide or oxidized low-density lipoprotein. RESULTS: It was found that GA at 5 and 25 mg/kg/d significantly inhibited the development of AS and increased plaque stability, as evidenced by decreased plaque in the aorta, reduced necrotic core size and increased collagen/lipid ratio in lesions. GA reduced the proportion of M1 macrophages in plaques, but had no effect on M2 macrophages. In vitro experiments showed that GA (1, 5, 25 µg/mL) significantly decreased the proportion of CD86+ macrophages and the mRNA levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, and MCP-1 in macrophages. Experimental results showed that GA inhibited M1 macrophage polarization by regulating TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that GA play an important role in plaque stability and macrophage polarization. GA exert the anti-atherosclerotic effect partly by regulating TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathways to inhibit M1 polarization of macrophages. Our study provides theoretical basis and experimental data for the pharmacological activity and mechanisms of GA against AS.

BACKGROUND: The use of various kinds of metal stents has emerged as an effective palliative treatment for malignant gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). However, most of these metal stents were designed for use in the esophagus or intestine and have a high incidence of stent obstruction and stent migration when used elsewhere. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of individualized stents (designed according to the shape and size of the GOO) in order to determine whether such stents could reduce the incidence of stent obstruction and migration. DESIGN: Multicenter, prospective, clinical trial. SETTING: Two tertiary-care referral centers. PATIENTS: Thirty-seven patients who presented with symptomatic unresectable malignant GOO caused by distal gastric cancer between April 2005 and June 2009. INTERVENTION: Placement of the individualized metal stents. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: The primary endpoint was to optimize stent resolution of proximal obstruction as determined by a GOO scoring system. Secondary endpoints were success rates, survival rates, and adverse events. RESULTS: Technical and clinical success was achieved in 97.3% and 94.4% of patients, respectively. The rate of resolution of proximal obstruction by a proximal stent was 97.3%. There were no procedure-related perforations or deaths. No stent migration or obstruction by tumor growth were found. The mean survival time was 232 days (range 28-387 days). LIMITATIONS: A single-arm study in tertiary-care centers. CONCLUSION: Placement of individualized stents is a safe and effective modality for the palliation of malignant GOO caused by distal stomach cancer and can help reduce tumor ingrowth and stent migration.

The manipulation of photons is a key technology for obtaining optical quantum information. In this study, we present a phase-modulated optomechanical system comprising two coupled cavity resonators and illustrate the phase-controlled photon blockade in the system. The coupling phase of the cavities reveals the interference of photons and introduces an unconventional photon-blockade effect. We also study the influence of the energy level fineness on the photon blockade and resonant frequency of the mechanical mode. Numerical simulations demonstrate that photon blockade can occur over a wide range of system parameters. These results have several implications for understanding the role of the state phase in quantum cavity optomechanics and provide a promising method for the realization of optomechanical quantum devices using photon blockade.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the utility of a radiomic nomogram combined with clinical imaging and radiomic features based on MRI for the diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer. METHODS: Multi-parametric MRI images of 136 breast cancer patients were retrospectively analyzed, 95 cases were stratified into the training cohort, and 41 cases were selected for the test group. According to the pathological molecular typing, the patients were divided into 23 cases of triple-negative breast cancer and 113 cases of non-triple-negative breast cancer. ITK software was used to manually delineate the lesion volume region of interest (VOI), and the Pyradiomics package was used to extract radiomic features for screening and model building. The platform was then used to analyze the clinical and imaging risk factors of breast cancer to build a characteristic model separately. Finally, a radiomic nomogram was constructed by integrating the radiomic and independent clinical image features. The diagnostic performance of the model was assessed using ROC curves. RESULTS: Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the menstrual cycle, glandular density, and skin thickening were risk factors for clinical imaging characteristics of triple-negative breast cancer. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) was 0.839 and 0.826 for univariate and multivariate analysis, respectively. After screening, 11 radiomic features participated in the calculation of the radiomic score, and its AUC in the test set was 0.803. Combining it further with clinical models, the AUC improved to 0.899. CONCLUSION: The radiomic nomogram developed in this study has great value in the diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Solitary hamartomatous polyps (SHPs) are rare lesions. Endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFTR) is a highly efficient and minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that benefits from complete lesion removal and high safety. CASE SUMMARY: A 47-year-old man was admitted to our hospital after experiencing hypogastric pain and constipation for over fifteen days. Computed tomography and endoscopy revealed a giant pedunculated polyp (approximately 18 cm long) in the descending and sigmoid colon. This is the largest SHP reported to date. Having considered the condition of the patient and mass growth, the polyp was removed using EFTR. CONCLUSION: On the basis of clinical and pathological evaluations, the mass was considered an SHP.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is still a lack of effective therapeutic drugs, and its molecular mechanism is urgently needed. Studies have shown that the intestinal flora plays an important regulatory role in cardiovascular injury, but the specific mechanism has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we found that an increase in Ang II in plasma was accompanied by an increase in the levels of myocardial injury during myocardial reperfusion in patients with cardiopulmonary bypass. Furthermore, Ang II treatment enhanced mice myocardial I/R injury, which was reversed by caveolin-1 (CAV-1)-shRNA or strengthened by angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-shRNA. The results showed that CAV-1 and ACE2 have protein interactions and inhibit each other's expression. In addition, propionate, a bacterial metabolite, inhibited the elevation of Ang II and myocardial injury, while GPR41-shRNA abolished the protective effects of propionate on myocardial I/R injury. Clinically, the propionate content in the patient's preoperative stool was related to Ang II levels and myocardial I/R injury levels during myocardial reperfusion. Taken together, propionate alleviates myocardial I/R injury aggravated by Ang II dependent on CAV-1/ACE2 axis through GPR41, which provides a new direction that diet to regulate the intestinal flora for treatment of myocardial I/R injury.

AIMS: N-n-Butyl haloperidol iodide (F(2)) is a novel compound derived from haloperidol. In our previous work, F(2) was found to be an L-type calcium channel blocker which played a protective role in rat heart ischemic-reperfusion injury in a dose-dependent manner. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the effects and some possible mechanisms of F(2) on calcium transients in hypoxic/ischemic rat cardiac myocytes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Calcium transients' images of rat cardiac myocytes were recorded during simulated hypoxia, using a confocal calcium imaging system. The amplitude, rising time from 25% to 75% (RT25-75), decay time from 75% to 25% (DT75-25) of calcium transients, and resting [Ca(2+)](i) were extracted from the images by self-coding programs. In this study, hypoxia produced a substantial increase in diastolic [Ca(2+)](i) and reduced the amplitude of calcium transients. Both RT25-75 and DT75-25 of Ca(2+) transients were significantly prolonged. And F(2) could reduce the increase in resting [Ca(2+)](i)and the prolongation of RT25-75 and DT75-25 of Ca(2+) transients during hypoxia. F(2) also inhibited the reduction in amplitude of calcium transients which was caused by 30-min hypoxia. The activity of SERCA2a (sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase, determined by test kits) decreased after 30-min ischemia, and intravenous F(2) in rats could ameliorate the decreased activity of SERCA2a. The inward and outward currents of NCX (recorded by whole-cell patch-clamp analysis) were reduced during 10-min hypoxia, and F(2) further inhibited the outward currents of NCX during 10-min hypoxia. All these data of SERCA2a and NCX might be responsible for the changes in calcium transients during hypoxia. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that F(2) reduced changes in calcium transients that caused by hypoxia/ischemia, which was regarded to be a protective role in calcium homeostasis of ventricular myocytes, probably via changing the function of SERCA2a.
