RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Whether psychiatric symptoms after recovery from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are specific to this illness remains unclear. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the Diagnosis Procedure Combination data and outpatient clinic data were used for patients who received inpatient treatment in Saiseikai-affiliated hospitals for COVID-19 or other respiratory tract infections (non-COVID) from 2020 to 2022. The primary outcome was new prescriptions of psychotropic drugs after discharge (i. e., prescriptions of psychotropics to patients who had not received them before or during their hospitalization). Values of interest were compared between groups using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. A COX proportional-hazards model was used to examine factors associated with psychotropic prescriptions after discharge in age- and sex-matched COVID-19 and non-COVID patients. RESULTS: Of 31,993 chart records, 19,613 were excluded due to a positive history with psychiatric disorders (n=2,445), prescriptions of psychotropics (n=744), and no follow-ups (n=16,424). Thus, 3,648 COVID-19 and 8,732 non-COVID patients were included (mean [range] duration of follow-up, days: 146.9 [1-727] and 239.2 [1-729], respectively). Two hundred and four (5.6%) of the 3,648 patients with COVID-19 received psychotropic prescriptions after discharge. No statistically significant differences were observed in the prescription rates of any psychotropic category between the COVID-19 and non-COVID groups. An increase in severity during hospitalization was significantly associated with more frequent psychotropic prescriptions (hazard ratio 1.83, p<0.001). DISCUSSION: The development of psychiatric symptoms should be closely observed, especially in patients who experienced increased severity during hospitalization, regardless of whether they suffered from COVID-19.

RESUMO

Most human malignant neoplasms show loss of primary cilia (PC). However, PC are known to be retained and involved in tumorigenesis in some types of neoplasms. The PC status in lung carcinomas remains largely uninvestigated. In this study, we comprehensively assessed the PC status in lung carcinomas. A total of 492 lung carcinomas, consisting of adenocarcinomas (ACs) (n = 319), squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) (n = 152), and small cell lung carcinomas (SCLCs) (n = 21), were examined by immunohistochemical analysis using an antibody against ARL13B, a marker of PC. The PC-positive rate was markedly higher in SCLCs (81.0%) than in ACs (1.6%) and SCCs (7.9%). We subsequently performed analyses to characterize the PC-positive lung carcinomas further. PC-positive lung carcinomas were more numerous and had longer PC than normal cells. The presence of PC in these cells was not associated with the phase of the cell cycle. We also found that the PC were retained even in metastases from PC-positive lung carcinomas. Furthermore, the hedgehog signaling pathway was activated in PC-positive lung carcinomas. Because ARL13B immunohistochemistry of lung carcinoids (n = 10) also showed a statistically significantly lower rate (10.0%) of PC positivity than SCLCs, we searched for a gene(s) that might be upregulated in PC-positive SCLCs compared with lung carcinoids, but not in PC-negative carcinomas. This search, and further cell culture experiments, identified HYLS1 as a gene possessing the ability to regulate ciliogenesis in PC-positive lung carcinomas. In conclusion, our findings indicate that PC are frequently present in SCLCs but not in non-SCLCs (ACs and SCCs) or lung carcinoids, and their PC exhibit various specific pathobiological characteristics. This suggests an important link between lung carcinogenesis and PC.

RESUMO

The structural features of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), consisting of polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) grafted onto poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE), can be characterized semiquantitatively by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The cross-sectional AFM phase images are converted to the binarized image by fitting two Gaussian functions. The domains correspond to hydrophilic PSSA domains and hydrophobic ETFE crystalline and amorphous regions, respectively, at lower and higher phase shift values. The area fraction of PSSA domains was consistent with the volume fraction determined by the grafting degree (GD). The dependence of the radius and interdomain distance of the PSSA domains on the GDs of PEMs shows discontinuous features at the threshold GD (39%). The former slightly increased from 10 to 12 nm and significantly increased to 17 nm at a GD greater than 39%; the latter decreased from 140 to 54 nm with increases in GDs up to 39% but inversely increased to 78 nm at a GD of 46%. This discontinuous change in radius and interdomain distance should be caused by the fusion of adjacent PSSA domains to form a larger size and spacing and thus less connectivity between each large domain, thereby lowering the conductivity at GD greater than 39%. We were able to demonstrate the existence of an ion-conducting hydrophilic path with a radius of approximately 10 nm. Even though it has received little attention in the past, it is expected to enable the design of electrolyte membrane functions in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: An automated web-based assessment and monitoring system ( www.psynary.com ) has been developed to assist non-specialist clinicians in managing common mood and anxiety disorders. Psynary promotes the use of standardised outcome measures to assess symptom severity and optimise treatments with the aim of improving outcomes and enabling faster recovery. This paper analyses the results from two parallel studies in New Zealand and Japan (OptiMA-1 NZ and Japan) to assess the validity of the R8 Depression scale, one of the system's core outcome measures. METHODS: Clinical samples were recruited from a public secondary care and a private psychiatry clinic. Participants completed the outcome measures for the study via the online Psynary system. The R8 Depression scale is a 30-item questionnaire which includes all symptom domains covered in the ICD-10 classification of depression. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was completed at the same time points as the R8 Depression, with a smaller sample also completing a paper-based Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR16). Internal validity was quantified via Cronbach's alpha and Guttman lower bounds method. External validation against the PHQ-9 and QIDS used the Pearson's and Kendall's correlation coefficients. Severity categories were set using a multivariate regression model. RESULTS: 270 patients participated in the study and completed a maximum of 1 baseline and 5 reviews within a 90-day period, giving a total of 1124 assessments with the PHQ-9 also being completed in 1053 of these assessments. R8 Depression normative data was also collected from 204 non-clinical volunteers with 187 of these also completing the PHQ9. Internal reliability scores were all higher than 0.9 (n = 1328). There was overall good external validity when comparing the R8 Depression to the PHQ-9, with a correlation of 0.91 for the combined normative and clinical samples (n = 1240). CONCLUSIONS: The R8 Depression has been developed as a patient-rated outcome measure for depression for administration on an online system called "Psynary". It has high internal and external validity against current widely used scales. Further work is underway to determine the sensitivity to change of the R8 Depression.

RESUMO

The catalyst-free hydrosilylation of CO2 under mild conditions remains limited. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato(dihydrido)silicon(IV) (1) as a six-coordinate silicon dihydride. The Si-H moiety of 1 reacts with polar double bonds and CO2 in the absence of a catalyst to afford hydrosilylated products. Combining the hydrosilylation with subsequent transformation furnishes formic acid from CO2 . Computational studies indicate that the hydride-donor properties of 1 are exceptionally high for a neutral silicon hydride, and that the direct hydride transfer from silicon to carbon is a pivotal step in the hydrosilylation of CO2 with 1.

RESUMO

Newly designed styrylimidazolium-based grafted anion-exchange membranes (StIm-AEMs), in which imidazolium ionic groups are attached to styrene at the far side from the graft chains, were prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of p-(2-imidazoliumyl) styrene onto poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoloethylene) (ETFE) films, followed by N-alkylation and ion-exchange reactions. StIm-AEM having an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.54 mmol g-1 with a grafting degree (GD) of ∼18%, possesses practical conductivity (>50 mS cm-1) even with a very low water uptake (∼10%) and high stability over 600 h in a 1 M KOH solution at 80 °C. There exists a critical IEC (IECc) in the range of 0.7-0.8 mmol g-1 over which the membrane showed high water uptake, which resulted in pronounced susceptibility to hydrolysis. Using small-angle neutron scattering technique with a contrast variation method, we found the hydrophilic phase in StIm-AEMs with IECs lower and higher than IECc shows "reverse-micelles" with water domains dispersed in the polymer matrix and "micelles" with graft polymer aggregates dispersed in the water matrix, respectively. The further analysis of micelle structures using the hard-sphere liquid model and Porod limit analysis reveals that the interfacial structures of ionic groups are essential for the electrochemical properties and durability of StIm-AEMs. In addition, StIm-AEM with an IEC of 0.95 mmol g-1 and the maximum power density of 80 mW cm-2 in the hydrazine hydrate fuel cell test, exhibited long-term durability under constant current (8.0 mA) up to 455 h, which, thus far, is the best durability at 80 °C for platinum-free alkaline-type liquid fuel cells.

RESUMO

We have developed a soft x-ray laser (SXRL) beamline equipped with an intensity monitor dedicated to ablation study such as surface processing and damage formation. The SXRL beam having a wavelength of 13.9 nm, pulse width of 7 ps, and pulse energy of around 200 nJ is generated from Ag plasma mediums using an oscillator-amplifier configuration. The SXRL beam is focused onto the sample surface by the Mo/Si multilayer coated spherical mirror. To get the correct irradiation energy/fluence, an intensity monitor composed of a Mo/Si multilayer beam splitter and an x-ray charge-coupled device camera has been installed in the beamline. The Mo/Si multilayer beam splitter has a large polarization dependence in the reflectivity around the incident angle of 45°. However, by evaluating the relationship between reflectivity and transmittance of the beam splitter appropriately, the irradiation energy onto the sample surface can be derived from the energy acquired by the intensity monitor. This SXRL beamline is available to not only the ablation phenomena but also the performance evaluation of soft x-ray optics and resists.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease is one of a growing number of chronic health problems that is difficult to cure in aging societies. While it is important to be vigilant about associated comorbidities in order to provide better patient care, data on the prevalence of comorbidities stratified by country or region are scarce. We aimed to elucidate the comorbidities associated with NTM disease based on Japanese health insurance claims data. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were performed using the claims data for 2014 provided by the Japan Medical Data Center Co., Ltd. Patients aged 20-75 years with ≥3 claims associated with NTM disease were identified and matched to 10 sex-and-age-matched controls that had never made a claim for NTM disease. Thirty-one comorbidities previously suspected to be associated with NTM disease were selected, and the prevalence of these comorbidities compared between cases and controls. RESULT: Overall, 419 NTM patients (134 males and 285 females) and 4190 non-NTM controls were identified from the JMDC database. Aspergillosis, asthma, chronic heart failure, diffuse panbronchiolitis, gastroesophageal reflux, interstitial pneumonia, lung cancer, cancer other than breast, lung, ovary, or prostate cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis were associated with NTM disease in both males and females. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was associated with NTM in males while chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, and Sjögren syndrome were associated with NTM in females. CONCLUSION: NTM disease was associated with multiple comorbidities that should be considered when providing medical care to individuals with NTM disease.

RESUMO

We found unprecedented reverse relationships in anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) for Pt-free alkaline fuel cell systems, i.e., the increase in hydrophobicity increased water uptake and susceptibility to hydrolysis. AEMs with graft copolymers that composed of anion-conducting 2-methyl-N-vinylimidazolium (Im) and hydrophobic styrene (St) units were employed. We characterized two new structures in these AEMs using a small-angle neutron scattering with a contrast variation method. (1) The distribution of graft polymers in conducting (ion channel) or non-conducting (hydrophobic amorphous poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE)) phase was evaluated in a quantitative manner. High fraction in conducting layer for AEMs having high grafting degrees was found using the proposed structural model of "conducting/non-conducting two-phase system". (2) Assuming a hard-sphere fluid model, we found AEMs having high St contents and low alkaline durability possessed nanophase-separated water puddles with diameters of 3-4 nm. The AEM having a low St content and the best alkaline durability did not show evident nanophase separation. The above hierarchical structures elucidate the unexpected reverse relationships that the AEM having highly hydrophobic graft polymers was subjected to the morphological transition to give water puddles at nanoscale. The imidazolium groups that were located at the boundary between graft polymers and water puddles should be susceptible to hydrolysis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based intervention has been receiving growing attention in cancer care. This study aimed to examine feasibility and to preliminary explore effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in Japanese breast cancer patients, and to explore possible modification of the program so that it fits better with this population. METHODS: Twelve participants with diagnosis of Stage I-III breast cancer received an eight session, weekly MBCT intervention in a group therapy format. The participants were followed up until 3 months after the completion of the program. RESULTS: All the participants completed the program with high attendance rate (mean number of attended sessions = 7.7). Significant improvement in anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) - anxiety subscale; effect size Cohen's d = 0.88, P < 0.05), trauma-related psychological symptoms (Impact of Event Scale-revised; d = 0.64, P < 0.01) and quality of life (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer: FACT-B; d = 0.72, P < 0.01), and trend-level improvement in depression (HADS - depression subscale; d = 0.53, P = 0.054) were observed. Qualitative analyses suggested the program may be beneficial for alleviating fear of cancer recurrence and for increasing spiritual well-being. Some recommended modification of the program was indicated from the post-intervention interviews. CONCLUSIONS: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy was well accepted by Japanese breast cancer patients and yielded favorable effect on their psychological status and quality of life. Further effectiveness study in a randomized-control design is warranted.

RESUMO

ABSTRACTBackground:Caregivers of people with dementia are likely to have psychological distress that sometimes results in mental health problems, such as depression. The objective of this study was to examine some predictive factors that are thought to be associated with psychological distress of caregivers of people with dementia in Japan. METHODS: Design: A cross-sectional study. SAMPLE: As part of a study to estimate the cost of dementia in Japan, 1,437 people with dementia-caregiver dyads were enrolled in the current informal care time study. The measurements in the study included were the basic characteristics of the caregivers and the people with dementia, and the informal care time during a week. ANALYSIS: Factors that predict caregivers' psychological distress, which was measured by Kessler's Psychological Distress scale (K6) score, were evaluated using univariate and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS: Approximately 69% of the caregivers recorded a K6 score higher than 4, while 18% scored higher than 12. According to the results of the logistic regression analysis (cut-off 4/5), the K6 score was associated with mental and comorbid diseases of people with dementia, informal care time, its lower number of caregivers, and the level of nursing care. According to the results of logistic regression analysis (cut-off 12/13), the K6 score was associated with mental symptoms and comorbid disease of people with dementia, sex of caregivers, informal care time, and its lower number of caregivers. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that the psychological distress of the caregivers is quite high and that informal care time and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are associated with it. These results corroborate with previous findings.

RESUMO

8-Hydroxyguanine (8OHG), a major oxidative DNA lesion, is known to accumulate in prostate cancer; however, the status of one of its repair enzymes, MUTYH, in prostate cancer remains to be elucidated. In this study, we showed that the expression levels of MUTYH mRNA and protein were significantly lower in prostate cancer than in non-cancerous prostatic tissue by examining two independent, publicly available databases and by performing an immunohistochemical analysis of prostate cancer specimens obtained at our hospital, respectively. About two-thirds of the prostate cancers exhibited a reduced MUTYH expression. When the effect of reduced MUTYH expression in prostate adenocarcinoma on the somatic mutation load was examined using data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, the numbers of total somatic mutations and somatic G:C to T:A mutations were significantly higher in the reduced MUTYH expression group than in the other group (P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0013, respectively). To determine the reason why reduced MUTYH expression leads to somatic mutation loads in prostate adenocarcinoma, we compared the DNA repair capacities between PC-3 prostatic cell line derived clones with different MUTYH expression levels. Both the capacities to cleave DNA containing adenine:8OHG mispairs and to suppress mutations caused by 8OHG were significantly lower in prostatic cell lines with lower MUTYH expression than in prostatic cell lines with higher MUTYH expression. These results suggested that reduced MUTYH expression is associated with somatic mutation loads via a reduction in DNA repair capacity in prostate adenocarcinoma. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

RESUMO

In our previous study (Soft Matter, 2016, 12, 1567), the relationship between the morphology and properties of graft-type imidazolium-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) was revealed, in that the semi-crystalline features of the polymer matrix maintain its mechanical properties and the formation of interconnected hydrophilic domains promotes the membrane conductivity. Here, we report a novel ionic structure of the same graft-type AEMs with different grafting degrees, analyzed using a small-angle X-ray scattering method under different relative humidity (RH) conditions. The characteristic "ionomer peak" with a corresponding correlation distance of approximately 1.0 nm was observed at RH < 80%. This distance is much smaller than the literature-reported mean distance between two ionic clusters, but close to the Bjerrum length of water. Since the representative number of water molecules per cation, nw, was small, we proposed that dissociated ion-pairs are distributed in the hydrophilic domains (ion-channels). At RH < 80%, ion-channels are disconnected, however in liquid water, they are well-connected as evidenced by the sharp increase in nw. The disconnected ion-channels even under relatively high RH conditions should be a substantial factor for the low power generation efficiency of AEM-type fuel cells.

RESUMO

The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is a non-departmental public body accountable to the Department of Health. NICE was established in 1999 in an attempt to reduce variability in the availability and quality of medical services in NHS to end the so-called postcode lottery. Since its establishment NICE has acquired an international reputation for the development of high quality, evidence-based clinical guidelines. NICE also makes cost-benefit assessments of certain technologies on the basis of effectiveness and cost effectiveness. In order to develop a NICE guideline related to psychiatry, the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health establishes a Guideline Development Group that consists of technical experts, health and/or social care professionals, and lay representatives. The group searches for and evaluates the available evidence and formulates a series of clinical recommen- dations following which stakeholders are consulted and revisions occur. As well as providing treatment recommendations for healthcare professionals, the guidelines are also intended to inform patients, helping them make decisions and improving communication between patients and healthcare staff, and also to direct the focus of research. To date, NICE has published guidance on antenatal and postnatal mental health, antisocial personality disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, dementia, depression, depression in children and young people, drug misuse (opioid detoxification and psychological interventions), eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, and the management of self-harm. We describe how, both directly through education and effects on clinical pathways, and indirectly through effects on health providers and patient behavior, NICE guidance has had an impact on psychiatrists working in UK.

RESUMO

We investigated the morphology and swelling behavior of a new graft-type of anion exchange membrane (AEM) containing 2-methylimidazolium groups by using a contrast variation small angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique. These AEMs were prepared by radiation-induced grafting of 2-methyl-1-vinylimidazole and styrene into poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) films and subsequent N-alkylation with methyliodide, and possessed both high alkaline durability and high conductivity. Our results showed that the crystalline lamellar and crystallite structures originating from the pristine ETFE films were more or less conserved in these AEMs, but the lamellar d-spacing in both dry and wet membranes was enlarged, indicating an expansion of the amorphous lamellae due to the graft chains introduced in the grafting process and the water incorporated in the swelling process. For the first time, the swelling behavior of the AEMs was studied quantitatively in various water mixtures of water and deuterated water with different volume ratios (contrast variation method), and the morphology of these membranes was elucidated by three phases: phase (1) crystalline ETFE domains, which offer good mechanical properties; phase (2) hydrophobic amorphous domains, which are made up of amorphous ETFE chains and offer a matrix to create conducting regions; phase (3) interconnected hydrated domains, which are composed of the entire graft chains and water and play a key role in promoting the conductivity.

RESUMO

Cellulose derived from biomass is a renewable resource with numerous applications. Using formic/peroxyformic acid at atmospheric pressure, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were isolated from rice husk (RH) in this study. This method was an excellent way to get rid of lignin and hemicelluloses from RH. The cellulose was subsequently acid hydrolyzed by H2SO4 (64%) for 30 minutes at 45 °C. The chemical and microstructure analysis showed that the lignin and hemicellulose contents of raw RH had been eliminated, and the crystallinity content of CNC was 67.16%. According to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) morphological analysis, CNC measured 19 ± 3.3 nm in diameter, 195 ± 24 nm in length, and 10.2 ± 6.8 in aspect ratio. The thermal stability of RH and CNC was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These encouraging findings demonstrated the potential for reusing RH agricultural waste to create CNC and include nanocomposites as a reinforcing material.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancer and third in causing cancer-related death globally. The most frequently mutated gene in human cancers is TP53, which plays a pivotal role in cancer initiation and progression. In Africa, particularly in Rwanda, data on TP53 mutations are lacking. Therefore, this study intended to obtain TP53 mutation status in Rwandan patients with gastric cancer. RESULTS: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 95 Rwandan patients with histopathologically proven gastric carcinoma were obtained from the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali. After DNA extraction, all coding regions of the TP53 gene and the exon-intron boundary region of TP53 were sequenced using the Sanger sequencing. Mutated TP53 were observed in 24 (25.3%) of the 95 cases, and a total of 29 mutations were identified. These TP53 mutations were distributed between exon 4 and 8 and most of them were missense mutations (19/29; 65.5%). Immunohistochemical analysis for TP53 revealed that most of the TP53 missense mutations were associated with TP53 protein accumulation. Among the 29 mutations, one was novel (c.459_477delCGGCACCCGCGTCCGCGCC). This 19-bp deletion mutation in exon 5 caused the production of truncated TP53 protein (p.G154Wfs*10). Regarding the spectrum of TP53 mutations, G:C > A:T at CpG sites was the most prevalent (10/29; 34.5%) and G:C > T:A was the second most prevalent (7/29; 24.1%). Interestingly, when the mutation spectrum of TP53 was compared to three previous TP53 mutational studies on non-Rwandan patients with gastric cancer, G:C > T:A mutations were significantly more frequent in this study than in our previous study (p = 0.013), the TCGA database (p = 0.017), and a previous study on patients from Hong Kong (p = 0.006). Even after correcting for false discovery, statistical significance was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that TP53 G:C > T:A transversion mutation in Rwandan patients with gastric cancer is more frequent than in non-Rwandan patients with gastric cancer, indicating at an alternative etiological and carcinogenic progression of gastric cancer in Rwanda.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The societal burden caused by anxiety disorders has likely been underestimated, while those for schizophrenia and depression have received more attention. Anxiety disorders represent a significant illness category that occurs at a high prevalence and poses a considerable burden. However, the cost of anxiety disorders in Japan has not yet been well researched. The goal of the present study was to estimate the total cost of anxiety disorders in Japan and to clarify the characteristics of this burden. METHOD: A prevalence-based approach was adopted to measure the total cost of anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders were defined as diagnosis code F40.0-F41.9 according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision. The cost was comprised of the following components: medical treatment costs and social service costs as direct costs, and morbidity and mortality costs as indirect costs. Data were collected from publicly available statistics. RESULTS: The total cost of anxiety disorders in Japan in 2008 was JPY 2.4 trillion (US$ 20.5 billion at the current exchange rate of US $1 = JPY 116.8). The direct cost was JPY 50 billion. The morbidity cost was JPY 2.1 trillion, while the mortality cost was JPY 0.24 trillion. CONCLUSIONS: The social burden caused by anxiety disorders in Japan is tremendous and is similar to that of other mental disorders. Productivity loss in the workplace represents the largest portion of all the cost components. Because the medical examination rate is quite low, the improvement of healthcare access might contribute to cost mitigation.

RESUMO

The Keio Twin Research Center has conducted two longitudinal twin cohort projects and has collected three independent and anonymous twin data sets for studies of phenotypes related to psychological, socio-economic, and mental health factors. The Keio Twin Study has examined adolescent and adult cohorts, with a total of over 2,400 pairs of twins and their parents. DNA samples are available for approximately 600 of these twin pairs. The Tokyo Twin Cohort Project has followed a total of 1,600 twin pairs from infancy to early childhood. The large-scale cross-sectional twin study (CROSS) has collected data from over 4,000 twin pairs, from 3 to 26 years of age, and from two high school twin cohorts containing a total of 1,000 pairs of twins. These data sets of anonymous twin studies have mainly targeted academic performance, attitude, and social environment. The present article introduces the research designs and major findings of our center, such as genetic structures of cognitive abilities, personality traits, and academic performances, developmental effects of genes and environment on attitude, socio-cognitive ability and parenting, genes x environment interaction on attitude and conduct problem, and statistical methodological challenges and so on. We discuss the challenges in conducting twin research in Japan.

RESUMO

The conventional hydration number, λ, of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) is estimated by the gravimetric measurement of the total water uptake in the membrane. This is the overall water molecules divided by the number of ionic groups covering the water distribution from the macroscale to the molecular level. For a more precise evaluation of the local ion-water interactions and ion transport efficiency in hydrophilic channels, in contrast to λ, we here propose an index, local hydration number (λlocal), defined as the number of water molecules located adjacent to and interacting with ionic groups in a PEM, per ionic group in the hydrophilic channels. We introduce an experimental method using partial scattering function analysis through a contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering technique to precisely determine λlocal at the micro- (nano-) scale to the molecular level for PEMs. When applied to the benchmark material Nafion and the well-studied radiation-grafted PEM, consisting of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) grafted onto poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE-g-PSSA), the obtained λlocal was close to the conventional λ. This means all water molecules interacted with sulfonic acid groups, which is much different from the case of anion-type grafted PEMs. Comparing the λlocal value obtained in this study with the conventional λ value confirmed that water existed only in nanostructured hydrophilic channels in these PEMs. The result of this work provides a route to understand local molecular structures of high-performing PEMs for energy conversion applications.
