RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this study is to calculate von Mises stresses, von Mises strains, deformation, principal stresses and principal elastic strains of non-UV and UV-irradiated hybrid SLA (sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched)-coated titanium implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at the Institute of Dentistry, CMH Lahore Medical College. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of One Hundred and Thirty Eight Dio Hybrid sandblasted and acid-etched implants of identical dimensions (10 mm in length and 4.5 mm in diameter) were allocated in the three groups. Control group A samples were not given UV irradiation, while groups B and C were given UVA (382 nm, 25 mWcm-2) and UVC (260 nm, 15 mWcm-2) irradiation, respectively. The CBCT data were analyzed using FEA (ANSYS software). CBCT images were taken before functional loading (8th week) and after functional loading (26th week). A 3-way ANOVA test was employed to see the difference between the three groups. Tukey test was utilized for multiple comparisons. p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The control group exhibited the highest average values for maximum von Mises stress, von Mises strain, deformation, principal stress, and principal elastic strain in both the maxilla and mandible compared to the UV-irradiated groups. Additionally, these measures consistently displayed higher averages in the maxilla across all groups compared to the mandible. Particularly, the UVC-irradiated group demonstrated the lowest von Mises stresses around the implants compared to the UVA group. CONCLUSION: Insignificant differences were observed between UVA- and UVC-irradiated implants in terms of principal stress, deformation, von Mises strain, and principal elastic strain. The only notable distinction was in von Mises stress, where the UVC-irradiated group exhibited lower von Mises stress around SLA-coated titanium implants.

RESUMO

Objective: This retrospective, cross-sectional analytical study investigated the incidence of tooth agenesis in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) radiographs of the CLP children were examined for congenitally missing teeth. Method: This study was conducted at three radiology centers in Lahore, namely, the Pakistan Jinnah MRI and Body Scan Centre, the University of Lahore Radiology Centres, and Fatima Memorial Hospital, from September 2021 to August 2022. The CLP patients were divided into four groups based on the location of the cleft: Cleft Lip and Palate Right (CLPR), Cleft Lip and Palate Left (CLPL), Bilateral Cleft (CLPB), and Midline Cleft (CLPM), inside and outside the cleft region. Two-way ANOVA was employed to compare the means of agenesis. Tukey's test was utilized to ascertain where the difference lies. The significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Moreover, a significant number of missing teeth were found inside the cleft. This study observed the CLPL (42.3%) and CLPR (13.6%) types more in number. Maxillary first premolars were found more missing outside the cleft region in CLPL and CLPB types. Although CLPB and CLPM types revealed a pattern of missing teeth, only a few cases were found in this study. Moreover, mean tooth agenesis was highest (4.5 SD.71) in the CLPM group, followed up by CLPB (2.75 SD 2.49), CLPR (1.23 SD 1.27), and CLPL Group (1.15 SD 1.12). Conclusions: Unilateral cleft lip and palate patients reported significant agenesis patttern compared to bilateral and median cleft cases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has immensely affected the world's population at physical and psychosocial levels. Dentists are no different from other healthcare providers, as they are equally if not more exposed to the threat of getting infected. OBJECTIVE: To assess the experience and behavior of public and private sector dentists practicing during the COVID-19 pandemic and their knowledge about it. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted online by sharing google forms through email, WhatsApp, and Facebook. The survey included questions on the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of dentists practicing during COVID-19. The data was interpreted by SPSS 24 using a chi-square test, and a value of p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: A considerable number of general dentists (26.9%) and specialists (39.4%) adopted partial suspension of clinics. Restriction's ease allowed 50.2% of the clinicians to resume their duties. 67.9% of the patients were medicated online during the lockdown phase. There was no significant difference regarding years of experience and willingness to treat/care (p-value 0.648). Personal protective equipment (PPE) was readily available for use in public or private practices, and the respondents agreed with its efficacy in protecting the operators. Compliance with PPE wear was 50% in all the respondents. CONCLUSION: The psychosocial repercussion of the pandemic continues to affect dental practices. Our attitude needs to improve as far as PPE is concerned, with regular training workshops and continuous updates of the developing Knowledge on COVID-19.

RESUMO

The possibility of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the improvement of bone and adjacent tissue recovery has previously been validated. However, there is insufficient data supporting the use of platelet-rich plasma to improve the healing of bone and adjacent tissues around an implant in the oral cavity. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to observe the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentrate on marginal bone loss and bone density around immediate implant placement using Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT). This clinical study was conducted over a period of six months on 12 subjects, who were equally categorized into two groups. Group I was the control, whereas the subjects in Group II received PRP therapy at the surgical site. All subjects were given a standard treatment with a single implant system (DIO UFII hybrid sandblasted acid-etched implants). Inserted implants were analyzed through CBCT, and records were registered at baseline, at the 12th week before functional loading and the 26th week after functional loading. The bone loss was calculated at the proximal (mesial and distal) side of the implant and bone density at baseline, 12th week, and 26th week after implant placement. SPSS version 23.0 was used for statistical analysis of data. The changes in bone levels were measured and compared between the two groups using the Mann-Whitney U test, with no significant difference. Bone density was analyzed by an independent sample t-test, p value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Again, no significant difference in bone density was observed between both groups at all three instances. Therefore, it can be concluded that local injection of PRP after immediate implant placement did not show any decrease in marginal bone loss or improvement in bone density. This trial is registered with NCT04650763.
