Soil moisture (SM) is essential for sustaining services from Earth's critical zone, a thin-living skin spanning from the canopy to groundwater. In the Anthropocene epoch, intensive afforestation has remarkably contributed to global greening and certain service improvements, often at the cost of reduced SM. However, attributing the response of SM in deep soil to such human activities is a great challenge because of the scarcity of long-term observations. Here, we present a 37 y (1985 to 2021) analysis of SM dynamics at two scales across China's monsoon loess critical zone. Site-scale data indicate that land-use conversion from arable cropland to forest/grassland caused an 18% increase in SM deficit over 0 to 18 m depth (P < 0.01). Importantly, this SM deficit intensified over time, despite limited climate change influence. Across the Loess Plateau, SM storage in 0 to 10 m layer exhibited a significant decreasing trend from 1985 to 2021, with a turning point in 1999 when starting afforestation. Compared with SM storage before 1999, the relative contributions of climate change and afforestation to SM decline after 1999 were -8% and 108%, respectively. This emphasizes the pronounced impacts of intensifying land-use conversions as the principal catalyst of SM decline. Such a decline shifts 18% of total area into an at-risk status, mainly in the semiarid region, thereby threatening SM security. To mitigate this risk, future land management policies should acknowledge the crucial role of intensifying land-use conversions and their interplay with climate change. This is imperative to ensure SM security and sustain critical zone services.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear introns in Euglenida have been understudied. This study aimed to investigate nuclear introns in Euglenida by identifying a large number of introns in Euglena gracilis (E. gracilis), including cis-spliced conventional and nonconventional introns, as well as trans-spliced outrons. We also examined the sequence characteristics of these introns. RESULTS: A total of 28,337 introns and 11,921 outrons were identified. Conventional and nonconventional introns have distinct splice site features; the former harbour canonical GT/C-AG splice sites, whereas the latter are capable of forming structured motifs with their terminal sequences. We observed that short introns had a preference for canonical GT-AG introns. Notably, conventional introns and outrons in E. gracilis exhibited a distinct cytidine-rich polypyrimidine tract, in contrast to the thymidine-rich tracts observed in other organisms. Furthermore, the SL-RNAs in E. gracilis, as well as in other trans-splicing species, can form a recently discovered motif called the extended U6/5' ss duplex with the respective U6s. We also describe a novel type of alternative splicing pattern in E. gracilis. The tandem repeat sequences of introns in this protist were determined, and their contents were comparable to those in humans. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the unique features of E. gracilis introns and provide insights into the splicing mechanism of these introns, as well as the genomics and evolution of Euglenida.

We extracted Sal B and TIIA from Salvia miltiorrhiza using enzymatic-assisted ethanol extraction. ACONN predicted optimal process conditions. Enzymolysis and alcohol extraction were used, optimizing conditions and evaluating antioxidant activity. ACONN analyzed data and ACO optimized conditions. Lab verification comprehensively evaluated the conditions. The correlation between Sal B, TIIA, and their antioxidant activities was examined. Weights of 0.5739 and 0.4260 evaluated Sal B and TIIA. ACONN had a 97.46% fitting degree. Optimized extraction conditions improved yield and quality, yielding a comprehensive evaluation value of 27.69 with 4.46% average errors. This approach enhances extraction and compound quality. Antioxidant activity strongly correlated with component yield, influenced by extraction conditions. ACONN-optimized extraction improved Sal B and TIIA yield and quality, with potential as natural antioxidants. Integrating machine learning and optimization algorithms in industrial extraction enhances efficiency and environmental preservation.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is malignant clonal expansion of myeloid blasts with high heterogeneity and numerous molecular biomarkers have been found to judge the prognosis in some specific classifications of AML. Furthermore, as for patients with cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukemia (CN-AML), we need to find more new biomarkers to predict the patients' outcomes. Recently, the expression level of Neuronal Calcium Sensor 1 (NCS1) has been associated with the prognosis of breast cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, but nothing related has been reported about hematological malignancies. Therefore, we make this study to explore the relationship between the NCS1 expression level and CN-AML. We analyzed the relation between survival and NCS1 RNA expression through 75 CN-AML patients from Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and 433 CN-AML patients (3 independent datasets) from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Additionally, we compared the NCS1 RNA expression between 138 leukemia stem cells positive (LSCs+) samples and 89 leukemia stem cells negative (LSCs-) samples from 78 AML patients from GSE76004 dataset. In our study, CN-AML patients with high expression level of NCS1 have longer EFS or OS. In addition, the NCS1 expression level in leukemia stem cells was low (p = 0.00039). According to these findings, we concluded that the high expression of NCS1 can predict favorable prognosis in CN-AML patients. Furthermore, our work put forward that NCS1 expresses lower in LSCs+, which might be an important mechanism to explain the aggressiveness of AML.

PURPOSE: An accurate prediction of survival prognosis is beneficial to guide clinical decision-making. This prospective study aimed to develop a model to predict one-year mortality among older patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) combined with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or diabetes mellitus (DM) using machine learning techniques. METHODS: A total of 451 patients with CAD combined with IGT and DM were finally enrolled, and those patients randomly split 70:30 into training cohort (n = 308) and validation cohort (n = 143). RESULTS: The one-year mortality was 26.83%. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method and ten-fold cross-validation identified that seven characteristics were significantly associated with one-year mortality with creatine, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and chronic heart failure being risk factors and hemoglobin, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, albumin, and statins being protective factors. The gradient boosting machine model outperformed other models in terms of Brier score (0.114) and area under the curve (0.836). The gradient boosting machine model also showed favorable calibration and clinical usefulness based on calibration curve and clinical decision curve. The Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) found that the top three features associated with one-year mortality were NT-proBNP, albumin, and statins. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposes an accurate model to stratify patients with a high risk of one-year mortality. The gradient boosting machine model demonstrates promising prediction performance. Some interventions to affect NT-proBNP and albumin levels, and statins, are beneficial to improve survival outcome among patients with CAD combined with IGT or DM.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence has indicated that the entire visual pathway from retina to visual cortex may be involved in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) pathological mechanisms. PURPOSE: To explore the functional and morphological brain characteristics in DON and their relationship with ophthalmologic performance. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 30 DON patients, 40 thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) without DON patients and 21 healthy-controls (HCs). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3.0 T, 3D T1-weighted spoiled gradient-recalled echo and gradient-recalled echo-planar imaging. ASSESSMENT: Functional and structural alterations in brain regions were evaluated with fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations, degree centrality (DC), and gray matter volume (GMV). Clinical activity score (CAS) is assessed across patients. STATISTICAL TEST: One-way analysis of variance with post hoc two sample t-tests (GRF-corrected, voxel level: P < 0.005, cluster level: P < 0.05) and correlation analysis (significance level: P < 0.05). RESULTS: Compared to HCs, DON patients had significantly decreased DC values in the bilateral BA17 and BA18 regions. Compared to the TAO group, DON patients had decreased GMV in the left anterior cingulate cortex, left middle frontal gyrus, left lingual gyrus, left parietal gyrus, right Rolandic operculum, left supplementary motor area, and right middle temporal gyrus. In addition, GMV in the right Rolandic operculum was significantly positively correlated with CAS (correlation coefficient: r = 0.448). DATA CONCLUSION: This study showed significant morphological and functional alterations in visual cortex and morphological alterations in partial default mode network regions of DON patients, which may provide insights into the mechanism of vision loss and may facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of DON. BACKGROUND: Recent evidence highlights the potential of axonal degeneration as a biomarker for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) detection. However, the diagnostic potential of peripheral nerve axon changes in ALS remains unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of quantitative MRI of the brachial plexus and limb-girdle muscles (LGMs) in patients with upper extremity onset of ALS. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: 47 patients with upper extremity onset of ALS and 20 healthy volunteers. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3-T, three-dimensional sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts using different flip angle evolutions with short-tau inversion recovery sequences, T2-weighted turbo spin-echo Dixon sequence. ASSESSMENT: The cross-sectional area (CSA) and nerve-muscle T2 signal intensity ratio (nT2) of the bilateral brachial plexus as well as the CSA and fat fraction (FF) of the bilateral LGMs were assessed by two radiologists. Disease severity and clinical stage of ALS patients were assessed by two neurologists. STATISTICAL TESTS: Student's t-test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, binary logistic regression, interclass correlation coefficient, receiver operating characteristic analysis, and correlation analysis were performed for MRI quantitative metrics and clinical variables. Significance level: P < 0.05. RESULTS: In the affected limbs of patients with ALS, the CSA of the brachial plexus roots, trunks, and cords and the nT2 values of the brachial plexus trunks were significantly smaller than in the healthy controls. In the LGMs, the affected limbs of ALS showed significantly smaller CSA and higher FF than controls. The model containing parameters such as brachial plexus trunk CSA, subscapularis CSA, infraspinatus CSA, and subscapularis FF had excellent diagnostic efficacy for ALS. Additionally, increased subscapularis FF and supraspinatus FF were correlated with disease severity, and subscapularis CSA was negatively correlated with the clinical stage. DATA CONCLUSION: Brachial plexus thinning, LGM atrophy, and fatty infiltration might serve as MRI-derived biomarkers for ALS with upper extremity onset. BACKGROUND: The mechanism driving dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) is unclear. Diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) allows for noninvasively assessing the microstructure of the entire visual pathway and may facilitate a better understanding of the mechanism of DON. PURPOSE: To assess microstructural changes of the whole visual pathway and to investigate the potential mechanism of trans-synaptic damage(TSD) pathogenesis in DON with DTI. STUDY TYPE: Cross-sectional. POPULATION: Sixty-four patients with bilateral thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), 30 with and 34 without DON, and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T/DTI (A single-shot diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging sequence). ASSESSMENT: Differences in DTI parameters including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) in each segment (optic nerve, tract, and radiation) of the entire visual pathway among the groups were compared. The parameters of visual evoked potentials (VEPs), visual field tests, and mean retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL) thickness on optical coherence tomography were also compared across patients. STATISTICAL TESTS: Student's t-test, chi-square test; ANOVA with post-hoc testing, interclass correlation coefficient, and correlation analysis. Significance level: P < 0.05. RESULTS: TAO patients with DON showed significantly reduced mRNFL thickness and abnormal VEPs. There was a tendency for gradually reduced FA and AD, and increased RD and MD from HCs, with non-DON to with DON in optic nerve and tract, statistically. For radiation, the RD and MD showed statistical increase, the AD and FA just showed numerical decrease (P = 0.119 and 0.059, respectively). For DON, the FA and MD of visual pathway segments showed correlations with abnormal VEPs. DATA CONCLUSION: DTI may be a useful tool for detecting microstructural changes in the entire visual pathway in DON. The changes in RNFL thickness and DTI parameters suggested TSD as a potential pathogenic mechanism of DON. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 4 Technical Efficacy: Stage 5.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the brain functional alterations in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) by evaluating spontaneous neural activity, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with regional homogeneity (ReHo), and its relationship with ophthalmologic performance. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO; 20 with DON, 27 with non-DON) and 33 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent fMRI. ReHo values were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc pairwise comparisons (voxel-level p < 0.01, Gaussian random field correction, cluster-level p < 0.05). Correlations between ReHo values and ophthalmological metrics were assessed for DONs, with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (p < 0.004). ROC curves were applied to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ReHo metrics. RESULTS: ReHo values were significantly lower in the left insula and right superior temporal gyrus, and higher in the left posterior cingulate cortex (LPCC), of DON than of non-DON patients. ReHo values were also significantly lower in the right middle temporal, left insula, and left precentral gyrus in DON than in HCs. Meanwhile, ReHo values were higher in LPCC in non-DON than in HCs. ReHo values correlated with ophthalmic examinations to varying degrees in DON. For distinguishing DON, the ReHo values in LPCC showed optimal individually (AUC = 0.843), the combination of the ReHo in both the left insula and LPCC performed better (AUC = 0.915). CONCLUSION: Spontaneous brain activity differed between TAO with and without DON, which may reflect the underlying pathological mechanism of DON. The ReHo index can be considered a diagnostic biomarker. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Spontaneous brain activity in DON differed from that in TAO without DON, which may reflect the underlying pathological mechanism of DON. The ReHo index can be considered a diagnostic biomarker for early detection of DON. KEY POINTS: • Dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) affects brain activity, which contributes in the understanding of its visual dysfunction. • Regional homogeneity values differ between thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy with and without DON in various brain regions. • Regional homogeneity values can be used as a biomarker in the differential diagnosis of DON.

PURPOSE: With a rapid increase in older adults, progressive impairment in cognitive function has become an increasing concern owing to high social and economic burdens. The current study was designed to investigate the associations of sex hormones and bone metabolism with cognitive impairment (CI) in Chinese oldest-old females. METHODS: There were 396 oldest-old females from the China Hainan Oldest-old Cohort Study (CHOCS). Following standardized procedures, Mini Mental State Examination was effectively completed, and sex hormones and bone metabolism were assessed in these females. RESULTS: The median age of all females was 101 years (range: from 80 to 116). There were 340 females (86%) with CI. Participants with CI had significantly higher levels of age, progesterone, prolactin and estradiol than those without CI (P < 0.05 for all). Total type I collagen N-terminal elongation peptide [hazard ratio (HR): 1.018, 95%CI: 1.001-1.035] and prolactin (HR: 1.065, 95%CI: 1.005-1.129) levels were positively and significantly associated with CI (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Prolactin and total type I collagen N-terminal elongation peptide had positive associations with CI in Chinese oldest-old females. Thus, a balance in sex hormones and bone metabolism may have significant effects on cognitive function during the aging process.

OBJECTIVE: This study, based on the China Hainan Centenarians Cohort Study (CHCCS), aims to comprehensively describe the characteristic of daytime, night and total sleep duration, sleep quality and different sleep mode of Hainan centenarians and their associations with activity of daily living (ADL) functions. METHOD: The baseline data of CHCCS was used. ADL function was evaluated the Bathel index, sleep quality was evaluated by Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), sleep status including daytime, night and total sleep duration as well as sleep quality and sleep mode. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to explore the association between sleep status and ADL disability and ADL moderate & severe disability. RESULTS: A total of 994 centenarians were included in this study with the age range 100-116 years old. Compared with the centenarians who sleep 6-9 h at night and < 2 h in the daytime, the adjusted OR between sleep > 9 h at night and sleep ≥ 2 h in the daytime and ADL disability was 2.93 (95% CI: 1.02-8.44), and adjusted OR of ADL moderate & severe disability was 2.75 (95% CI: 1.56-4.83). Compared with centenarians who sleep for 7-9 h and have good sleep quality, centenarians who sleep for > 9 h and have poor sleep quality have an increased risk of ADL moderate & severe disability (OR = 3.72, 95% CI: 1.54-9.00). CONCLUSION: Relation between sleep duration and ADL disability was more significant compared with sleep quality in Hainan centenarians. Poor sleep quality can aggravate the relationship between sleep duration and ADL moderate & severe disability.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a common cardiovascular condition that progressively results in heart failure. In the present study, we have designed to load transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-ß3) and cardio potential exosomes into the blended polycaprolactone/type I collagen (PCL/COL-1) nanofibrous patch (Exo@TGF-ß3@NFs) and examined its feasibility for cardiac repair. The bioactivity of the developed NFs towards the migration and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells was determined using in vitro cell compatibility assays. Additionally, Exo@TGF-ß3/NFs showed up-regulation of genes involved in angiogenesis and mesenchymal differentiations in vitro. The in vivo experiments performed 4 weeks after transplantation showed that the Exo@TGF-ß3@NFs had a higher LV ejection fraction and fraction shortening functions. Subsequently, it has been determined that Exo@TGF-ß3@NFs significantly reduced AMI size and fibrosis and increased scar thickness. The developed NFs approach will become a useful therapeutic approach for the treatment of AMI.

AIM: To investigate the detectability of noninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS) with conventional sequencing depth to detect fetal copy number variants. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study in a total of 19 144 pregnant women. Their cell-free plasma DNA were assessed for trisomy 21, trisomy 18, trisomy 13, sex chromosome aneuploidies, and genome-wide copy number variants by NIPS at conventional sequencing depth. RESULTS: Three hundred seventy-four cases (2.0%, 374/19 144) with abnormal results were detected, which including 84 cases (0.4%, 84/19 144) with high risk of trisomy 21, 18, and 13, 90 cases (0.5%, 90/19 144) with high risk of sex chromosome abnormalities (SCA), and 44 cases (0.2%, 44/19 144) with high risk of other chromosome aneuploidies. One hundred fifty-six cases (0.8%, 156/19 144) with high risk of copy number variations (CNVs) were also detected. In following prenatal diagnosis, composite positive predictive value (PPV) of trisomy 21, 18, and 13 was 69.6% (48/69). The PPV of SCAs was 37.3% (19/51). And the PPVs for CNVs was detected as 51.0% (<5 Mb), 71.4% (5 Mb ≤ CNV ≤10 Mb), 56.5% (>10 Mb). Finally, a follow-up about the pregnancy outcomes were conducted for all available cases. CONCLUSIONS: NIPS yielded high PPVs for trisomy 21, 18, and 13 aneuploidies and moderate PPVs for SCAs and CNVs. The screening effectiveness was closely related to the size of CNV fragments. Larger CNVs, especially larger than 5 Mb, could be detected more accurately by NIPS in our analytic technique. Meanwhile, diagnostic confirmation by microarray analysis was highly recommended.

Inflammatory dysfunction and angiogenesis inhibition are two main factors leading to the delayed healing of diabetic wounds. Hydrogels with anti-inflammatory and angiogenesis-promoting effects have been considered as promising wound care materials. Herein, a salvianolic acid B (SAB)-loaded hyaluronic acid (HA) self-healing hydrogel (HA/SAB) with anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenesis capacities for diabetic wound healing is reported. The HA hydrogel was prepared via the covalent cross-linking of aldehyde groups in oxidized HA (OHA) and hydrazide groups in adipic dihydrazide (ADH)-modified HA (HA-ADH) with the formation of reversible acylhydrazone bonds. The obtained HA hydrogel exhibited multiple favorable properties such as porous structures, excellent self-healing properties, a sustainable release capacity of SAB, as well as excellent cytocompatibility. In addition, the effects of the SAB-loaded HA self-healing hydrogel were investigated via a full-thickness skin defect model using diabetic rats. The HA/SAB hydrogel showed enhanced skin regeneration effects with accelerated wound closure, shorter remaining dermal space length, thicker granulation tissue formation, and more collagen deposition. Furthermore, reduced inflammatory response and enhanced vascularization were found with HA/SAB2.5 hydrogel-treated wounds, indicating that the hydrogel promotes diabetic wound healing through the promotion of anti-inflammation and angiogenesis. Our results suggest that the fabricated SAB-loaded HA self-healing hydrogel is promising as a wound dressing for the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Redox-induced magnetic transformation in organic diradicals is an appealing phenomenon. In this study, we theoretically designed twelve couples of diradicals in which two nitroxide (NO) radical groups are connected to the redox-active couplers including p-benzoquinonyl, 1,4-naphthoquinyl, 9,10-anthraquinonyl, naphthacene-5,12-dione, pentacene-6,13-dione, hexacene-6,15-dione, pyrazinyl, quinoxalinyl, phenazinyl, 5,12-diazanaphthacene, 6,13-diazapentacene, and 6,15-diazahexacene. As evidenced at both the B3LYP and M06-2X levels of theory, the calculations reveal that the magnetic reversal can take place from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism, or vice versa, by means of redox method in these designed organic magnetic molecules. It was observed that p-benzoquinonyl, 1,4-naphthoquinyl, 9,10-anthraquinonyl, naphthacene-5,12-dione, pentacene-6,13-dione, and hexacene-6,15-dione-bridged NO diradicals produce antiferromagnetism while their dihydrogenated counterparts exhibit ferromagnetism. Similarly, pyrazinyl, quinoxalinyl, phenazinyl, 5,12-diazanaphthacene, 6,13-diazapentacene, and 6,15-diazahexacene-bridged NO diradicals present ferromagnetism while their dihydrogenated counterparts show antiferromagnetism. The differences in the magnetic behaviors and magnetic magnitudes of each of the twelve couples of diradicals could be attributed to their distinctly different spin-interacting pathways. It was found that the nature of the coupler and the length of the coupling path are important factors in controlling the magnitude of the magnetic exchange coupling constant J. Specifically, smaller HOMO-LUMO (HOMO: highest occupied molecular orbital, LUMO: lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) gaps of the couplers and shorter coupler lengths, as well as shorter linking bond lengths, can attain stronger magnetic interactions. In addition, a diradical with an extensively π-conjugated structure is beneficial to spin transport and can effectively promote magnetic coupling, yielding a large |J| accordingly. That is, a larger spin polarization can give rise to a stronger magnetic interaction. The sign of J for these studied diradicals can be predicted from the spin alternation rule, the shape of the singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs), and the SOMO-SOMO energy gaps of the triplet state. This study paves the way for the rational design of magnetic molecular switches.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are considered potential gas separation membranes of the next generation due to their structural diversity and geometrical functionality. However, achieving a rational structure design for a 2D MOF membrane and understanding the impact of MOF nanosheet stacking modes on membrane separation performance remain challenging tasks. Here, we report a novel kind of 2D MOF membrane based on [Cu2 Br(IN)2 ]n (IN=isonicotinato) nanosheets and propose that synergetic stacking modes of nanosheets have a significant influence on gas separation performance. The stacking of the 2D MOF nanosheets is controlled by solvent droplet dynamic behaviors at different temperatures of drop coating. Our 2D MOF nanosheet membranes exhibit high gas separation performances for H2 /CH4 (selectivity >290 with H2 permeance >520 GPU) and H2 /CO2 (selectivity >190 with H2 permeance >590 GPU) surpassing the Robeson upper bounds, paving a potential way for eco-friendly H2 separation.

BACKGROUND: The initiation of exercise during rehabilitation at the subacute stage could provide stroke survivors with an approach to recovery that capitalizes on unique physiological conditions and promotes spontaneous recovery. We aimed to examine the effects of a tailored sitting Tai Chi program on recovery outcomes among subacute stroke survivors. METHODS: We conducted a 12-week assessor-blind randomized controlled trial in China. Subacute stroke survivor-caregiver dyads were recruited and randomly assigned to either the sitting Tai Chi group (n=80) or attention control group (n=80). Outcomes including upper limb function (Fugl-Meyer Assessment Upper Extremity & Wolf Motor Function Test), balance control (Berg Balance Scale), sitting balance control (Trunk Impairment Scale), depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form), shoulder range of motion, shoulder pain (ShoulderQ), activities of daily living (Modified Barthel Index), and quality of life (Stroke Specific Quality of Life Scale) were measured at baseline, in-process, immediately post, and 4-week postintervention. RESULTS: Immediately postintervention, the sitting Tai Chi group (n=69) showed significant upper limb function improvement in the primary outcomes including the performance time (regression coefficient of the group-by-time interaction, B=-21.415 [95% CI, -31.000 to -11.831]) and functional ability (B=10.146 [95% CI, 4.886-15.406]) domains of the Wolf Motor Function Test, balance control (B, 4.972 [95% CI, 1.356-8.588]), and sitting balance control (B=4.397 [95% CI, 2.699-6.096]). Compared with the control group (n=65), improvements were also observed in secondary outcomes including depressive symptoms (B=-1.626 [95% CI, -2.304 to -0.948]), shoulder extension (B=4.518 [95% CI, 0.893-8.144]), activities of daily living (B=5.510 [95% CI, 0.450-10.569]), and quality of life (B=15.680 [95% CI, 7.255-24.105]). CONCLUSIONS: The results support the effectiveness of a tailored sitting Tai Chi program in improving recovery outcomes among subacute stroke survivors and provide additional knowledge to support the clinical implementation of such a program. BACKGROUND: Physical independence is crucial for overall health in the elderly individuals. The life expectancy of women has been shown to be higher than that of men, which is also known as the "male-female health-survival paradox". Sex hormones may be one of the explanations. However, the relationships between sex hormones and physical function remain unclear in the elderly females. This study was designed to explore these relationships among the Chinese oldest-old and centenarian women. METHODS: Data from 1226 women were obtained from the China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study. Home interviews, physical examinations and blood analyses were conducted using standardized procedures. Variables including age, Han ethnicity, illiteracy, smoker, drinker, estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone were used in the multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses. RESULTS: In all the participants, age [beta (95% confidence interval): - 0.84 (- 0.98, - 0.71)] and E2 levels [beta (95% confidence interval): - 0.22 (- 0.28, - 0.17)] were negatively associated with activities of daily living (ADLs) in the multivariate linear regression analyses (P < 0.05 for all). We also observed significantly negative associations of age [odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.90 (0.88, 0.91)] and E2 levels [odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.98 (0.98, 0.99)] with physical normality in the multivariate logistic regression analyses (P < 0.05 for all). Age and E2 levels gradually decreased with increases in the ADL quartiles across all the participants (P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that E2 levels were negatively associated with physical function among the Chinese oldest-old and centenarian women.

The water channel feature of the aquaporin (AQP) is considered to be the key in improving the permselectivity of AQP-based thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes, yet much less attention has been paid to the physicochemical property changes of the PA layer induced by AQP-reconstituted proteoliposomes. This study systematically investigated the roles of proteoliposome constituents (liposome/detergent/AQP) in affecting the physicochemical properties and performance of the membranes. For the first time, we demonstrated that the constituents in the proteoliposome could facilitate the formation of a PA layer with enlarged protuberances and thinner crumples, resulting in a 79% increase in effective surface area and lowering of hydraulic resistance for filtration. These PA structural changes of the AQP-based membrane were found to contribute over 70% to the water permeability increase via comparing the separation performance of the membranes prepared with liposome, detergent, and proteoliposome, respectively, and one proteoliposome-ruptured membrane. The contribution from the AQP water channel feature was about 27% of water permeability increase in the current study, attributed to only ∼20% vesicle coverage in the PA matrix, and this contribution may be easily lost as a result of vesicle rupture during the real seawater reverse osmosis process. This study reveals that the changed morphology dominates the performance improvement of the AQP-based PA membrane and well explains why the actual AQP-based PA membranes cannot acquire the theoretical water/salt selectivity of a biomimetic AQP membrane, deepening our understanding of the AQP-based membranes.

Ocular diseases are closely related to the physiological changes in the eye sphere and its contents. Using biomechanical methods to explore the relationship between the structure and function of ocular tissue is beneficial to reveal the pathological processes. Studying the pathogenesis of various ocular diseases will be helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. We provide a critical review of recent biomechanical analysis of ocular diseases including glaucoma, high myopia, and diabetes. And try to summarize the research about the biomechanical changes in ocular tissues (e.g., optic nerve head, sclera, cornea, etc.) associated with those diseases. The methods of ocular biomechanics research in vitro in recent years are also reviewed, including the measurement of biomechanics by ophthalmic equipment, finite element modeling, and biomechanical analysis methods. And the preparation and application of microfluidic eye chips that emerged in recent years were summarized. It provides new inspiration and opportunity for the pathogenesis of eye diseases and personalized and precise treatment.
