RESUMO

The East Asian scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) is one of the classical traditional Chinese medicines for treating epilepsy for over a thousand years. Neurotoxins purified from BmK venom are considered as the main active ingredients, acting on membrane ion channels. Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) play a crucial role in the occurrence of epilepsy, which make them become important drug targets for epilepsy. Long chain toxins of BmK, composed of 60-70 amino acid residues, could specifically recognize VGSCs. Among them, α-like neurotoxins, binding to the receptor site-3 of VGSC, induce epilepsy in rodents and can be used to establish seizure models. The ß or ß-like neurotoxins, binding to the receptor site-4 of VGSC, have significant anticonvulsant effects in epileptic models. This review aims to illuminate the anticonvulsant/convulsant effects of BmK polypeptides by acting on VGSCs, and provide potential frameworks for the anti-epileptic drug-design.

RESUMO

To elucidate the characteristics of fishery resources structure in the Dachenyang Spaw-ning Ground Reserve, the index of relative importance (IRI), biodiversity index and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to explore the relationship between crustaceans community and marine environment based on the bottom trawl survey data collected from April and November in 2018. A total of 38 crustaceans species were recorded, belonged to 25 genera in 14 families. The dominant species were Oratosquilla oratoria, Portunus trituberculatus, Charybdis bimaculata, and Parapenaeopsis hardwickii. The resource density of crustaceans was generally high in depths below 50 m in spring and in depths above 50 m in autumn. The density in the southern area was higher than nouthern area. The Margalef species richness index (D), Shannon diversity index (H) and Pielou evenness index (J) of crustaceans in spring was higher than that in autumn. The H of crustaceans in depths above 50 m was the highest. Based on cluster analysis and non-matrix multidimentional scaling analysis, the crustaceans could be classified into three groups in spring and four groups in autumn. The differences in crustacean community structure in spring were more significant than in autumn. The results of canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that water depth, bottom temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were the main environmental factors affecting species composition and spatial structure of crustaceans in the surveyed area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To delineate the clinical characteristics associated with long-term viral shedding (>21 days) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: In this retrospective study, factors associated with long-term (>21 days) severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA shedding were evaluated in a conhort of 609 patients from two hospitals in Wuhan. RESULTS: The median duration of SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding was 19 days (interquartile range, 10-28 days) among all patients. There were 42% of patients having prolonged viral shedding time (>21 days), in which the longest viral shedding time was 58 days. When comparing patients with early (≤21 days) and late viral RNA clearance (>21 days), prolonged viral shedding was associated with age <65 (P=0.015), female sex (P=0.028), cough (P=0.025), fatigue (P=0.035), sore throat (P=0.013), aspartate aminotransferase (P=0.038), procalcitonin (P=0.010), albumin (P=0.003), D-dimer (P=0.011), lung involvement (P=0.014), reticular shadow (P<0.001) and lung consolidation (P=0.004). Age range (<65 years) (odds ratio [OR], 1.46 [95% CI, 1.05-2.03]) and female sex (odds ratio [OR], 1.40 [95% CI, 1.00-1.94]) were independent risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term viral shedding (>21 days) is not a rare phenomenon among COVID-19 infectious patients. Age range (<65) and female sex are independent risk factors for long-term viral shedding. Early antiviral treatment should be considered for COVID-19 patients with such risk factors. Further study should be conducted to know the infectivity of patients with long-term viral shedding in order to develop reasonable control measures.

RESUMO

The relative importance index (IRI), mean crowding, niche breadth, and niche overlap (Qik) of major fish species were calculated based on two fishery resource surveys from April to May 2016 (spring) in the coastal waters of central and southern Zhejiang Province. The results showed that there were 24 major fish species (IRI:100), the niche breadth values of which differed greatly and were positively correlated with IRI. The niche overlaps of fishes were extremely low in spring. The total amount of species pairs with niche overlap 0.6 (Qik :0.6) were six in April and five in May, which represented 3.9% and 4.8% of the total pairs, respectively. Results from the redundancy analysis showed that the distribution of major fish species were mainly affected by temperature, salinity, water depth, and dissolved oxygen, which caused ecological differentiation of fish species.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aerial parts of Peganum harmala L. (APP) is a well-known and effective herbal medicine in China, and has been commonly used for treating various ailments, including cough and asthma. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the antitussive, expectorant, and bronchodilating effects of the quinazoline alkaloids (±)-vasicine (VAS), deoxyvasicine (DVAS) (both isolated from the alkaloid fraction of APP) and (±)-vasicinone (VAO) (synthesized from VAS). METHODS: The three quinazoline alkaloids were tested as antitussive on cough models in mice and guinea pigs. VAO was synthesized from VAS via the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide. VAS, VAO, and DVAS were orally administered at dosages of 5, 15, and 45 mg/kg. Cough in these models was induced by ammonia, capsaicin, and citric acid. Phenol red secretion experiments in mice were performed to evaluate the expectorant activity of the alkaloids. Bronchodilating effects were evaluated by using a bronchoconstrictive induced by acetylcholine chloride and histamine in guinea pigs. RESULTS: In antitussive tests, VAS, VAO, and DVAS significantly inhibited coughing frequency and prolonged the cough latency period in animals. At the highest doses tested (45 mg/kg), they showed antitussive activities similar to codeine phosphate (30 mg/kg) in mice and guinea pigs. Expectorant evaluation showed that VAS, VAO, and DVAS could significantly increase phenol red secretion in mice by 0.54-, 0.79- and 0.97-fold, by 0.60-, 0.99-, and 1.06-fold, and by 0.46-, 0.73-, and 0.96-fold, respectively, at dosages of 5, 15, and 45 mg/kg compared with the control (0.5% CMC-Na, 20 ml/kg). Ammonium chloride at 1500 mg/kg increased phenol red secretion in mice by 0.97-fold compared with the control. Bronchodilation tests showed that VAS, VAO, and DVAS prolonged the pre-convulsive time for 28.59%, 57.21%, and 29.66%, respectively, at a dose of 45 mg/kg in guinea pigs, whereas aminophylline prolonged the pre-convulsive time by 46.98% compared with pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS: Quinazoline alkaloids VAS, VAO, and DVAS have significant antitussive, expectorant, and bronchodilating activities. VAS, VAO, and DVAS are the active ingredients in APP, which can be used to treat respiratory disease.
