Instructors in organized physical activity classes can be a source of social support through their relationships with participants, influence on participants' interactions with each other, and design of activities. Grounded in interpretive description, the objective of this study was to examine older adults' experiences of and their perspectives on group physical activity instructors' supportive behaviors. Observations of 16 group physical activity classes (N = 295) and focus groups or interviews with N = 38 class participants aged ≥ 55 (n = 29 women) were conducted at four municipal recreation facilities in a Canadian city. Five themes shed light on how instructors provided social support: (a) supporting autonomous engagement, (b) developing caring connections, (c) fostering trust through expert instruction, (d) managing conflict directly and effectively, and (e) creating a climate where people want to go. Instructor training should consider older adults' social support needs and help instructors embody behaviors that support continued physical activity participation, thereby contributing to healthy aging.

This study examined which of nine forms of social support were the strongest predictors of physical activity in older adults, and to what degree these associations were moderated by eight demographic indicators of groups at increased risk of social isolation. Baseline data from 21,491 adults aged 65 and older who were participants of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were analyzed using multiple regression. Greater social network size, social contact with network members, and participation in community-related activities predicted greater physical activity, whereas being in a domestic partnership and perceiving more tangible support to be available were negatively associated. The strength and direction of these associations varied by sex, living arrangement, and income. Given the findings, various forms of social support should be incorporated in physical activity interventions but tailored to meet the needs of different segments of the aging population.

The University of Calgary joined the Age-Friendly University (AFU) Global Network in 2018. As part of our university's AFU action plan, a baseline assessment of the institution's age-friendliness will be conducted to identify areas of strength and growth. To inform our approach and that of other institutions undertaking this work, an environmental scan was performed to determine methods used by post-secondary institutions to date to assess age-friendliness. Both academic and grey literature published between 2012 and 2022 in the English language was searched using diverse keywords. The academic literature was identified from four databases (Abstracts in Social Gerontology, Academic Search Complete, Education Research Complete, Scopus) and the grey literature from 84 institutional websites of AFU Global Network members. Twelve academic sources and four grey sources were included in the analysis. Seven methods were used to assess age-friendliness, with the most common approaches being surveys, inventories, focus groups, interviews, and photovoice. The Age-Friendly Inventory and Campus Climate Survey (Silverstein et al., 2022) was selected to evaluate the University of Calgary's age-friendliness due to its alignment with all 10 AFU principles, comprehensiveness, and involvement of multiple stakeholders. Other post-secondary institutions should consider their context and resources when selecting an assessment method.

Little is known about how social participation can be facilitated among older adults in group physical activity and its psychosocial benefits that contribute to successful aging. This study aimed to understand older adults' experiences with social participation in group physical activity programs. Using interpretive description methodology, 16 observations, eight focus groups, and two interviews with participants unable to attend focus groups were conducted with adults 55 years and older attending programs across four recreation facilities. Group programs were found to influence social participation through (a) a meaningful context for connecting and (b) instructors' expectations of social interaction. Social participation in these programs addressed psychosocial needs by (c) increasing social contact and interaction, (d) fostering social relationships and belonging, and (e) promoting regular engagement. Training for instructors should include balancing the physical aspects of program delivery with the social, while also considering older adults' diverse needs and preferences for social interaction.

Teachers can create supportive conditions in physical education to mitigate experiences of stress for children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD); however, most are unfamiliar with DCD and lack adequate training to instruct children with impairments. The purpose of this study was to explore teachers' perceptions of and interactions in physical education with children thought to demonstrate functional difficulties associated with DCD. A semistructured interview was conducted with 12 teachers across all elementary years with diverse backgrounds and thematically analyzed. Four themes were produced. Teachers (a) had differing views on the etiology of children's movement difficulties, though (b) all recognized a range of difficulties children demonstrated. They (c) believed it was their role to facilitate positive experiences for these children in physical education but (d) experienced challenges in doing so. Training that increases teachers' knowledge of and abilities to address the needs of children thought to have DCD is warranted.

Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) may experience stress in physical activity contexts due to emphasis on their poor motor skills. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of children at risk for DCD in physical education in order to develop a deeper understanding about what they experience as stress and how they cope with it. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, six children in Grades 4-6 participated in two semistructured interviews. A motivational (and developmental) stress and coping theory informed interpretation of the three themes that described the children's experiences: (a) they hurt me-psychological and physical harm sustained from peers, (b) it's hard for me-difficulties encountered in activities, and (c) I have to-pressure to meet the teacher's demands. Although the children at risk for DCD were confronted with various stressors in physical education, they coped more adaptively when social support was provided.

In this article, we describe the process and strategies that study participants living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in central Canada utilized to manage and live well with their illness and its associated symptoms. Drawing on interpretive phenomenology, we interviewed eight participants three times, followed by a member checking focus group and individual interviews. We analyzed interview transcripts using detailed line by line analysis. Our findings suggest participants engaged in a challenging process of recognizing that changes had occurred and then coming to terms with these changes by acknowledging the severity of their condition and the resulting limitations. Then, participants drew upon several strategies to minimize feelings of breathlessness, including taking care of themselves, managing risk, and altering behavior. Participants acknowledged the challenges inherent to this process, yet described how they were able to live well with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease through their adaptations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine proportions and predictors of change in alcohol intake and binge drinking during the first 2 waves of the COVID-19 pandemic among middle-aged and older participants in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) COVID-19 Questionnaire Study. METHODS: A total of 28,559 (67.2% of the potential sample) CLSA participants consented to the study with 24,114 completing the exit survey (fall 2020). Descriptive statistics and logistic regressions to examine predictors of change (increase or decrease) in alcohol intake and binge drinking were performed. RESULTS: Among alcohol users, 26.3% reported a change in alcohol consumption during the first 10 months of the pandemic. Similar percentages increased (13.0%) or decreased (13.3%) consumption. In our mutually adjusted logistic regression model, odds of change in alcohol intake were greater for younger age, higher income, current cannabis smoker, positive screen for depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The magnitude of all associations for decreased intake was less than that of increased intake, and the directions were opposite for male sex and age. Predictors of current binge drinking (27.9% of alcohol users) included male sex, younger age, higher education and income, cannabis use, depression, and anxiety. CONCLUSION: Factors predictive of potentially worrisome alcohol use (i.e. increased intake, binge drinking) included younger age, sex, greater education and income, living alone, cannabis use, and worse mental health. Some of these factors were also associated with decreased intake, but the magnitudes of associations were smaller. This information may help direct screening efforts and interventions towards individuals at risk for problematic alcohol intake during the pandemic.
RéSUMé: OBJECTIF: Examiner les proportions et les prédicteurs des changements dans la consommation d'alcool et l'hyperalcoolisation rapide au cours des deux premières vagues de la pandémie de COVID-19 chez les personnes âgées et d'âge moyen ayant participé à l'étude par questionnaire sur la COVID-19 de l'Étude longitudinale canadienne sur le vieillissement (ELCV). MéTHODE: Un total de 28 559 participants de l'ELCV (67,2 % de l'échantillon potentiel) ont consenti à l'étude sur la COVID-19, et 24 114 ont répondu à l'enquête à la sortie (automne 2020). Nous avons procédé par statistique descriptive et par régression logistique pour examiner les prédicteurs des changements (augmentation ou diminution) dans la consommation d'alcool et l'hyperalcoolisation rapide. RéSULTATS: Chez les consommateurs d'alcool, 26,3 % ont déclaré un changement de leur consommation d'alcool au cours des 10 premiers mois de la pandémie. Un pourcentage semblable de consommateurs d'alcool avaient accru (13 %) ou diminué (13,3 %) leur consommation. Dans notre modèle de régression logistique mutuellement ajusté, la probabilité de changement dans la consommation d'alcool était plus élevée chez les répondants plus jeunes, les répondants au revenu élevé, les fumeurs de cannabis actuels et les répondants ayant fait état de dépression, d'anxiété ou de solitude. Certains de ces facteurs étaient aussi associés à une consommation réduite, mais ces associations étaient moins significatives. Ces informations pourraient orienter les efforts de dépistage et les interventions auprès des personnes à risque de consommation problématique d'alcool durant la pandémie.
